  • Join Dr. Van Dyken as she discusses photobiomodulation, also known as infrared light therapy, red light therapy, low level light therapy or LLLT. What on earth is it, and is there some science behind it, or is it all a scam? It seems that photobiomodulation is gaining in popularity, and there are so many claims that it can help with almost every condition under the sun. Is there any truth to this?

Thanks, great video! So I bought a Beurer IL50 300W lamp (please keep in mind that I'm neither a Dr. nor a Beurer salesperson - just sharing my general experience) to use at home to proactively help with mild neuropathy and inflammation reduction and for nitric oxide creation, like you mentioned. It has really helped, and it had the unexpected benefit of speeding up growth in my calf muscles. My experience matches what you have shared from the research.

Such a nice video. I have a question:
Could we use the sun as an photobiomodulation light source?
I mean infrared light reaches us from the sun and since low doses are adequate ultraviolet radiation shouldn't be a problem right?

Great information! Could you elaborate on this theme by talking about the units people can buy for their homes. Can these less powerful devices as opposed to what is used in clinics, be as effective for the various uses you describe? How can a person make an informed decision on what type of unit is most efficacious? Some are very expensive, others less so, how does price point effect the effectiveness? If you can share any additional info on these questions, it would be most helpful.

You did a very good job of diluting the principal message which is that there is exactly zero hard evidence or any serious studies done by the highest scientific research authorities that would prove that such treatments deliver any of the results you've purported here. Towards the end you mention that none of the studies are conclusive or consistent. You should have mentioned that at the beginning. I wouldn't spend a dime on this technology in this state.

I've never read any convincing evidence it works and unlike UV light (UVA and UVB but not UVC)Infra Red and Near IR doesn't seem to be used in phototherapy by the medical profession.UVA(PUVA) and UVB are fairly frequently used to treat eczema and psoriasis plus the early stage of a rare lymphoma called Mycosis Fungoides.

I have celiac disease that manifests itself on my skin (Dermatitis Herpetiformis) from a glutening and I can fully attest that photobiomodulation works. The machine at the clinic I go to maximizes its effectiveness as its full body immersion. It look like a tanning bed but isn’t. A work colleague goes for recovery from a severe concussion she had over a year ago. After plateauing in her recovery she started going 3 months ago and has started improving again.

A friend of mine has an autoimmune disorder too and his skin cracks open in sores. As soon as he feels a tingle under his skin, he shines red light on it and it keeps it at bay. It has changed his life. He now no longer takes strong meds or emollients.

    Ms. Van Dyken,
Re: “The hypothesis behind this is that the infrared light prepares the cells to resist and/or repair further UV induced damage.”
    Please consider:
This hypothesis *seems* like yet another specific instance of the more general case that putting the body into hormesis (the goldilocks zone of stress) activates the sirtuins to do their magic.
