A graduate of Wofford College, Hunte spent 5 years working in investment banking at Banc Of America/Merrill Lynch and has covered music, politics, and culture for numerous publications.

This is a classic manipulative move: address the obvious sense of the apology so that the listener feels like they are not being put in a place where they are forced into empathy. The extension being that you (might) feel as though you are voluntarily empathizing with the person expressing regret.
Notice that there is no personally directed comments to the victim of the assault, this is a common tell of media trained apology messages. The appeal is only to the audience, not at all to the victim.
The video is an attempt at provoking identification from the audience: who hasn’t had a rough time at some point? Done things they regret? Suffered and projected that suffering onto their closest and hurt people they didn’t want to hurt.
But it is all strategy. Diddy knows this is a death knell and so he knew he cannot leave the narrative alone. But I think there is only one ethical imperative here: cultural banishment. As I saw someone say in a tiktok video on the matter: goodbye, forever.
This is a classic DARVO tactic (Deny, Argue, Reverse Victim and Offender)

How is this gossip? Here's one of the most important people in hip hop history caught on camera assaulting his r&b star girlfriend. His alleged "Drug mule" was arrested as part of his investigation. His son releases a diss track aimed at 50 Cent and the feds. And he released a video statement in the aftermath. This is the absolute definition of news in and outside of hip hop which is why I titled it as such. Would you expect hip hop media not cover this?
