Unbelievable riffs. Almost nobody realise that Mastodon is the band that's making the biggest influence in the metal scene. 10 years from now most people will realise. It's like we all take it for granted, like Mastodon still was a new band. These dudes are setting the bar really high.

I can totally get behind that statement. These guys take you on an almost psychadelic ride to different worlds with their awesome riffs. All the new kids thinking they need a fucking 9-string to be metal.. I'll stick with bands like mastodon.
Esteban Aguayo They'll be considered classic rock/metal in a few decades. Hopefully that doesn't mean the radio will overplay their best songs though.
I've been listening to these guys since Remission and totally agree. They amaze me on every album, even if the last two albums weren't as strong as their previous work. And the crazy part is, this is supposed to set the tone for the album. The preview of Andromeda that they gave in 'Making of Emperor of Sand part III" was fucking unbelievable. It's better than this song somehow.

I never liked the Grammys and their judgment and honestly, I thought Mastodon lost their true potential after Crack The Skye. I mean who can surpass the greatness of songs such as Oblivion or The Czar, but this time considering the fact that this song won the Grammy, I thought of giving it a listen and boy has it taken its toll over me? I've gone crazy and I listen to it over 20 times a day. You did justice to this song, well played!

You should really go into mixing engineering. You have an amazing ear and from what I can tell, from your videos, a vast knowledge of the sonic space of how instruments are laid out to the human ear.

I just started listening to Mastodon, which songs are the ones to check out?
They're more of an album centric band- here's a quick guide
Remission - Brutally heavy, screamed gang vocals. Heavy influence from Neurosis
Leviathan - Still brutally heavy, but with many thrashier moments and some insane finger picked guitar leads.
Blood Mountain - More proggy, prettier guitar bits and more clean vocals. Stronger focus on solos.
Crack the Skye - Their masterpiece IMO. Gorgeous, expansive, melodic passages that blend layer after layer of guitars with melodic vocals and Brann's insane drumming.
The Hunter - Mastodon's most hated album, because they go for a catchier, almost poppy approach. I for one love it, chorus that get stuck in your head for hours and guitar leads that you'll be humming without realizing it.
Once More 'Round the Sun - A mix of The Hunter and Blood Mountain. Great pretty, catchy songs with some heavier riffs to bring back the edge they had lost. The vocals on this album are stellar.
EOS - It's like the hunter, but more stripped back. Some heavier bits, but mostly focused on Mastodon's rock side.

userdudeguy Of course brother, Mastodon is my favorite band at this point haha. Also, when getting into them, the dynamics don't stop in the instrumentation- they effectively have 5 different vocalists. Their rythm guitarist (Riffmaster General) Bill just throws in a few roars here and there, but the other 3 members sing about equally. Brann, their drummer, has these soaring cleans - he does not sing in the first two albums. Brent, the lead guitarist, has this growling scream and a throaty soulful clean vocal. Troy, the only one without a goofy name that starts with B, as well as their bassist, has this bellowing aggressive vocal style. And, many of their songs feature Scott Kelly from Neurosis, who also throws in some seriously harsh vocals. He has a few spots on every album. Cheers on your journey mate, you'll be obsessed before you know it.
