Great! My neighbor used to sing, Bomben auf Engelland. Kind of worse than this, but I can just see him in his dressed up clothes and suspenders out raking at 90 years old, great man.
I wish this was true. Sadly it was composed by Herms Niel made in 1939, he's actually known for a lot of famous German army marches including Erika. Edit: the lyrics were actually from the days of kaiserreich in ww1. But the only recorded used tune was the one used by Herms Niel in 1939
ok i gotta be honest... i found this song because of The Hellsing Ultimate OVA (anime), but ive always loved war songs, be them rallies, marches, anthems, victory ballads or anything. and of all war-songs, ive always found that the Germans and Russians seem to make the most powerful and/or catchy. ill never get this song out of my head
They loved going to war, so they needed effective music to get the people in the right state of mind, you want to evoke power and confidence. The Germans might've lost, but they sure felt they were winning on their way to the front.
I was humming this in the shower the other day, it's such an positive song, the irony in war songs, they're there to raise the morale, because war is so heinous and sad, that we have to trick ourselves into doing them. Well at least War does bring us these songs to uplift the morale, and so war isn't all bad due to that, and I'd say, the biggest wrongs about modern wars, are no war songs, to uplift the spirit of the troops. They know that when they leave, their SOs will cheat on them, and they'll leave knowing that when they come back, they won't get any help with the psychological scars they'll receive. Leb wohl!
This made no sense to me. Wars had some merit to them because it created songs which helped soldiers's morale and delude themselvves into thinking they were dying for a good reason, and now the wars are not so nice because of a lack of propaganda? So we need to milk our soldiers for war so that they could have a song every other week to uplift their spirits for more war? What you're suggesting is rather shocking. War is and never was good for any other reason than financial gain for those on top or simple bloodlust. Well women too but that's a whole other type of lust.
Well as a German and quite versed in the English language and both history of Europe as well I have to say you are right. The first WW was mainly to prove who is the main power in Europe, even if it was Germany which mainly drove the nations to war. In the end everybody lost. This song is about German navy setting sails against the allmighty British fleet in the faint attempt to achieve victory even if it means death. Because the country was fed up with the scorn it received.
To anyone here in the modern day, Great Britian was an ally of Germany (and later Japan who committed the same cardinal sin as Germany) from the 16th century. Britian saved Prussia in the seven years war, setting the stage for the NGF and aiding Prussian interests for decades. The sin Germany committed was attempting to build a larger Navy than the British. The British, as an Island and Germanies supposed ally, can only view this in one way. The German's lay clear their intent to crush the British, despite everything. Later the Japanese, despite not being colonized like the rest of Asia explicitly because of Britian, despite her Naval Officers being trained in London, despite her system of Government being based on the British model, her army the British model, her railways the British gauge, spat in Britian's face when the British asked them to not build a bigger Navy than the British because A) why bother wasting your money, your our ally and we already have the biggest Navy and B) the only way we could view this would be as direct military challenge to our global dominance, which we achieved before anyone even cared about your nation, so could you not wast 1/4 of your nations GDP on building warships just to spite us? Japan says no.
Eng lyrics: Today we want to sing a little song, We would like to drink cool wine Where glasses should be checked, For we must, we must be parted. Refrain: Give me your hand, your white hand, Farewell, my darling, farewell my darling, Farewell, farewell For we sail, for we sail, For we sail to take on the English, the English. 2. We show our flag and it blows on the mast, It proclaims the power of our realm, For we no longer want to suffer, That the Englishman at us does laugh. Refrain 3. If the news comes that I have fallen, That I sleep in Davy Jones' locker, Don't cry over me, my dear, just think: When he shed his blood, it was for the Fatherland. Refrain
Just some facts from Germany. The text of the "Matrosenlied" better known as "Engellandlied" was written by Hermann Löns in 1914. It was already used in WW I. The music was composed by Herms Niel in 1939. In this way the song was used by the German propaganda in WW II.
Some notes from Germany. There is more than one difference between Hitler/Stalin and Lenin or Bismarck. Stalin and Hitler were criminals in more than one way. But they were not corrupted. Lenin was a visionist. Bismarck was just a politician. He had no visions but he was clever and was able to do the realistic things. Perhaps he was one of the most successful politicians from Germany
Today, we'll sing a little song. We'll drink the cool wine. And the glasses will clink, then we must be seperated. Refrain; Give me your hand, your white hand live well, my love, live well my love live well, live well. then we go, then we go, then we go against England, England!
@588158 But it's not Nazi music ^^' , Engeland Lied was created in 1915 during the world war one. And we can't really say nazi music, beaucoup nazi means a political subject, it's better to say wehrmacht military march
Not exactly. It mentions that the power of the navy will essentially show the British not to underestimate. But its not a violent song at all. The third verse is actually really sad, the sailor dying and telling his love not to cry.
If you did your reaserch, the song was writen during WWI, the time before the third reich known as the German Empire! Therefore, it is the SECOND REICH, not the third. This song is not a wehrmacht nor a nazi song.

I did not visit the Holocaust museum, but I Googled it and it seems that it is only about Jews. I also became interested in the Armenian Holocaust and became confused.
