ollietheocta Awesome! I really want this camera, but I can't sacrifice the quality I've become accustomed to. Plus, a remote mic is mandatory for motovlogging.
Just got my GoPro hero 4 black, looking at the footage from the session I'm glad I did. Although the form of the session is a lot better and it's awesome not needing a case for under water stuff, like you said image quality is the reason they are top of the market. I can also see the lack of battery swapping options and the higher chance of water getting in the camera without a case being a problem. I used to have a camera that claimed it was waterproof but after using it in the water with no case a few times it broke.
Larry Bandž It certainly is way cheaper! I have the SJ4000. After GoPro didn't do anything for me when my Hero2 drowned in the Adriatic Sea (I was willing to pay for one), I decided that any action cam I would buy would have to be "disposable". I won't feel bad if I lose it.
macfan999 Exactly, its way over priced. There are so many better cameras out there. people are just a sucker for these action packed videos that gopro posts.
The color contrast is actually really really easy to fix. Simply find a nice contrast gradient to apply in an editing software, which is really easy to do.
The session might be smaller overall. But it's thicker. Which sucks because I like to use a chin mount on my helmet and the session looks like it would be even more awkward.
Just brought the go pro hero4 black edition + lcd screen to cover all eventualities and a day later saw the promo for the session. I was gutted originally but now couldn't be more pleased! Great video thanks
Aki Hauru only difference is their cheaper alternatives are somewhat decent. the 2014 GoPro Hero for example does quite well for it's price. while it's true that it's not perfect it's a good GoPro for beginners
Aki Hauru A $400.00 video camera that replaces ones that cost $3000.00 just 2 years ago isn't expensive … its an amazing device andI have no idea why someone would complain about its price to value comparison …. unless your about 14 or something.
J. Mack i didnt think it was expensive because of what its capable of, when i got my gorpo hero 4 silver it automatically became the best camera even compare of my brothers 16 mega pixel professional dhl camera, plus the video quality is incomparable to anything else i ever shot so its worth the money
in the UK the GoPro Session is £159. which is a heck of a lot cheaper than the other GoPro's over here. much prefer the shape of the unit and the versatility of that wrap around mount. The lack of a view screen is no great loss for me, as my style of filming where i need to aim the thing both at scenery and also at myself in an environment means that a separate mobile or tablet desplay is essential anyway, what ever the unit. I cannot warrent the extra expense for the other GoPro units. But at just shy of 160 quid. This one for me is perfect. And the slightly dreamy like focus And sun bleed is actually for me gives a magical quality just right for my artistic sensibilities. Something that might be an issue for some. But a quality I like. The battery does give over 2 hours of solid filming. But would prefer at least an extra half hour. Quality is plenty good enough. Cost is King...
I love how real you were about how the camera is. Like I've seen some youtubers prettying saying how great it is(probably so they can actually get the sponsor money) while you say the pros and cons and compare it. Good video
i have a gopro hero 4 silver and i was upset that their was a new one but looking at the specs and quality of the session im still really loving the 4 silver
The goofy form factor has kept me from buying a GoPro and I'm glad to see they're headed in the right direction. I'm confident that future versions will get the image quality and exposure squared away.
+Ricky Lewis wait what do you mean you can change the settings on itself now? How :O They don't sell those ones where you can't do that anymore, right?
I personally love the Session! I've used it to record our bands live music (looks and sounds good) I've used it to record myself and my guitar students during lessons and then send them a copy( looks and sounds goods). I got mine for $175 no tax and no shipping. But I'm ordering 3 more so we can use on our Jeep when we go off-roading! Also would work great as a VLOG device too!
thanks, was trying to decide which one to get, this is the first review video i came upon and the comparison between image quality did the trick, saved me lots of time
specs the gopro hero 4 is the better camera. with original sensor lens. looks like a new company sensor lens. I give credit where due. And by far the best video presentated out thre. WHile Brandsprotetion.com by Gopro. released the cam to an inhouse member that sold to a craigs List person. and wanted all info removed. Gopro more like a nogop. Polaroid cube should now step to the plate and show opro how it's done? I am not a fan of a camera with absolute no control that I have to spend 400.00 to use I am a Fan of a Mobius Action cam that I can put to a micro card, any setting I want and change through a card or pc as well App today, but Iam a fan for being the idela Hobby cam on the Market by a Local Hong Kong Manufacturere that listens to their Customers, then just looking for advertisement . The Mobius has come a long way. and is quite small Smaller than the gopro laying down flat it is even smaller than the Session. In a way it Love to have the demensions not in mm in English. to compare said more than enough.love the cam not a fan of a throw away. Peace FISH
Thanks bro.. we own a few Gorpos, 4 Basic Hero $129.99, 2 Gopro Hero 3 Silver, and 1 Gopro Hero 4 Silver and 2 of the first Gopros First HD Hero. Used then for our surf camp, and for us surfing, plus skiing and boarding, mountain climbing etc. I was considering the above Gopro for my ski helmet because of the size, but Not sure if I like the quality. Been using chest harnesses anyway but hard to get good shots of others. Thanks for your review, Ronnie Lees.
Thank you very much for the review! I was looking for such hands-on comparison video. Agree with you, I wouldn't buy/use a camera that produces lower image quality than my current camera (Hero 4 Black). The only reason to buy Session now might be if you have a very specific needs and Session shape suites your needs much better than regular GoPro camera - then yes, you might consider to have a Session camera as your secondary camera.
Thanks for sharing. I'm afraid you forgot to mention about the fisheye distortion. H4 Session looks like a little bit improved in this video, am I right? Even superview looks not-so-baddly-distorted.
Thanks for the review, you did a terrific job!! I was liking the Small size, but you changed my mind on what I should buy. After all I'm buying a camera for the quality, why compromise BECASE the size.
1080/120 and Im in. otherwise its the same as my 3+ black, that is plenty small enough, cant justify the size change without an upgrade in frames per sec mainly at 1080P, or 4K by 30, UPDATE, just watched the last part about video bitrates, im definitely OUT until that is better, thanks so much for taking the time to do such a detailed review and to point out those details!!! the water spot thing drives me crazy too, i kinda like the original hero 1 curved lens, with rainX, and wind, nothing would stick to it
Is the HERO 4 Session the same as the Hero Session thats currently $200? And if so, would you recommend the session now that its cheaper than the silver?
A very well done fair review. The side by side shot comparisons make this video perfect. Insanely informative without being bogged down in technical specs and engineering jargon.
This is one of the best video reviews I've ever watched! I was thinking about buying a Session but it's not ready for prime time. It will be soon. Great job WIRED!
my original hero decided to stop capturing audio consistently a few weeks ago. this gave me a good reason to opt for the session because of its size and weight. action cams with wide angle lenses simply won't get the best shot in the first place... add compression when saving and so much is lost unless you are producing for your sponsor GoPro and can save at full resolution. even then youtube can't make the most of it either, or consumer graphics cards. by now i have enough mounts that it would cost even more to buy another company's camera. the session fixes 3 problems: seeing if its recording from anywhere other than the front, its lighter and smaller and still a huge improvement over my hero that still mostly works, and the wifi/bluetooth solves any reason to have touchscreens on the cam itself. those are only used at idle, when you likely have your phone nearby anyway for the app
I have one. If you are not particular with slight changes in resolution its all good. Love the fact you can turn it on and off at will with the touch of a button. Loving it so far. I just wish GOPRO has an editing app for IOS like how iMovie works.
The difference in image quality was noticeable from the start; the side by side comparisons simply confirmed what I suspected. If tis was more like $150 they'd sell loads, but I'm not sure how many people will trade picture quality for portability.
I'm ok with having to pair it with other device to change settings... yes it possible to design unit so you can change everything by pushing buttons on unit, but it is always a pain trying to remember button order to scroll through menu, just like it is on all other GoPro's. I always hookup to smartphone to change settings on my Silver if in housing... so much easier. really like they still incorporated superview... single biggest mode I use!!
With the GoPro price drop, down to almost half the price of the silver, would you recommend it now? I Have a GoPro Hero 2 with the bacpac and a lot of different mounts, was just thinking of upgrading. Is the new Hero a good option? Or Should I kick the extra $100 and get the session?
Outstanding comparison and review. I'm just starting to look for my first camera and was debating between the session and the 4 silver. This review has answered quite a few of my questions. Thank you
Thanks for this. Was thinking of getting the Session but now i think i'll just wait for the "Session 2" or something similar to it's size - and with the image quality of the Silver.
Very similar to the Polaroid Cube cam, which also has 1 main button to control the cam. the ProDrenalin software would do a good job of brightening up the color and fixing the fisheye warp in the Hero4 Session and smoothing the shakes too!
Let's be honest. Kodak cube for $99 is the way to go if you're looking for size and plus for the price you just can't go wrong! Gopro silver over that session all day.
Excellent review. Sticking with my Hero4 Silver, even though I love the form factor of the session. The Hero5 Session was just announced, hopefully image quality has improved.
thank you, im planing my trip to mexico where i will be snorkeling scuba diving site seeing and everything else, your video really covered everything i need to know about both cameras for my journey, will most definitely be going with the hero 4 silver or black. thanks for an awesome video!
Also, now that the session has come down in price drastically, and it is considerably cheaper the the Silver, do you still recommend the silver? Especially as post editing can fix colour issues?
So glad, I bought the Hero 4 silver a month ago. Upgraded from 3+, but when the session was announced I got a little worried that my 4 isn't as nice but now I know! Lol
Was looking at getting one of these miniature ones.... NOT ANYMORE!!! Fantastically well put together footage for comparisons. Thanks for the heads up :)
Just picked up a Session here in the UK today, £160 from Argos, which is a bit more than the £150 that Curry's PCW was advertising them for, but had no stock! So now the price is down to that level the Session makes a lot more sense. There is no way I'd have paid the same price as for a Hero Silver.
the silver 4 has so much positive reviews for it and most people prefer it. the session maybe cheaper but the quality is superb in silver. I am too going to buy from Argos on the buy now and pay later plan therefore I don't feel a hole in my pocket.
I've been wanting to buy my first go pro and hopefully will get one soon thanks for doing this because I' really wanted the session for the size but after seeing the difference in image quality i don't think I'll go for that one,, but i think it's good for people that want to mount it on a helmet
Go pro silver rocks, only down side after you have the lcd bac and the whole rig is that it doesn't zoom-in. None do, somewhat of a downside. Put that in a package and you'll have the most versatile camera in the world.
EVERY video review should be like this from now on...
It could be very useful for many things. But the price tag is crazy. They should trim the price at least 40%
***** Like it's weight. True!
***** Amen 2 that!
This is the only thing that's holding me back from buying

Cal Moto the 5 is rumoured to come out in October of this year!

You guys should do a comparison on the goPro session and the Polaroid cube !!
Larry Bandž agreed!
Larry Bandž Or the SJCAM M10....
Yes Anthony!! I really like the sjcam ,i think its better than the session already!!

Anthony Pierre I don't understand that... If you were willing to pay for one why didn't you just buy another? What did you want GoPro to do for you?
Honestly, it's a $150 camera. Far to expensive for it's capabilities
Actually it is 399.99! Even worse
Sean Baxter macfan's point was lost on you. It *should* be priced at $150 max.
Haha ok thanks brett248vista that makes more sense now! And yes I totally agree!
Sean Baxter Anytime! :)
macfan999 Exactly, its way over priced. There are so many better cameras out there. people are just a sucker for these action packed videos that gopro posts.

Wow, one of the best reviews in a very long time.
The session might be smaller overall. But it's thicker. Which sucks because I like to use a chin mount on my helmet and the session looks like it would be even more awkward.
Very well done video! Thanks for the comparison!
Just brought the go pro hero4 black edition + lcd screen to cover all eventualities and a day later saw the promo for the session. I was gutted originally but now couldn't be more pleased! Great video thanks
Nowadays GoPro is just a status symbol, like Apple. They make awesome products, but they are freakin' expensive.
That would be true if GoPro's competitors didn't objectively outperform them in many areas, which they do not.
Aki Hauru only difference is their cheaper alternatives are somewhat decent. the 2014 GoPro Hero for example does quite well for it's price. while it's true that it's not perfect it's a good GoPro for beginners

The best review at present. Ok wired, you have my attention.
this is one of the best if not the best go pro reviews ive ever read/watched...look forward to more of your reviews

i have a gopro hero 4 silver and i was upset that their was a new one but looking at the specs and quality of the session im still really loving the 4 silver

The goofy form factor has kept me from buying a GoPro and I'm glad to see they're headed in the right direction. I'm confident that future versions will get the image quality and exposure squared away.
It's $200 now, you can change setting on the device itself now, it also records in 1440p now.. so it's worth the money

"The silver is a lot more natural, but it's dark as hell." hahaha
Did not see that coming man! I really thought you were gonna throw it as far as you could....I'm glad you pointed out those differences!
That is one fine review. The only question I had that you didn't address was whether the Session floats.
Why would you leave your GoPro in the water anyway?
Like if it falls off your surfboard will it sink or float?
Chris Mumford u can buy a back float for it like the other go pros
Lynsey Corrieri No its a side floaty thing that goes over the whole camera
just look it up
This was the best review Ive ever seen for a camera, let alone a GoPro. Great execution of information.
OMG - I was just about to buy a session. Thank you so much!!!!
thanks, was trying to decide which one to get, this is the first review video i came upon and the comparison between image quality did the trick, saved me lots of time

$199 now :)) hahaa. Down price so fast.

Is it worth it now at $199 ?
I would think so, The silver is only worth the extra money if you are using this in a short film.
So glad you did this video. I have a hero4 silver and wanted to see the footage comparison and this did it justice. Thank you!

lesmoor kelly That comment was as good as the Review!

Is the HERO 4 Session the same as the Hero Session thats currently $200? And if so, would you recommend the session now that its cheaper than the silver?
Thank you I was thinking it was better on all marks, but the older version has more options, and useability despite the size difference.
A very well done fair review. The side by side shot comparisons make this video perfect. Insanely informative without being bogged down in technical specs and engineering jargon.
Very interesting. Thank you. Now the prices : 200 euro vs 400 for the silver were consistent.
Thanks for the review. Might wait a few versions before I'd consider the Session. Maybe by Session 3 they'll get it right?
This is my first time coming across this channel. Very good review in my opinion. I'll be sure to check out more from the channel.
This is one of the best video reviews I've ever watched! I was thinking about buying a Session but it's not ready for prime time. It will be soon. Great job WIRED!
super helpful - I think at some point they will combine the two and you'll only need the external casing when diving
Nice comparison. I don't have either, but I'd definitely go with the silver for now.
Hey man, your movement shots are excellent with no blurring, what software and encoding are you using?
how do you know if you're filming correctly? or in the right position?
my original hero decided to stop capturing audio consistently a few weeks ago. this gave me a good reason to opt for the session because of its size and weight. action cams with wide angle lenses simply won't get the best shot in the first place... add compression when saving and so much is lost unless you are producing for your sponsor GoPro and can save at full resolution. even then youtube can't make the most of it either, or consumer graphics cards. by now i have enough mounts that it would cost even more to buy another company's camera. the session fixes 3 problems: seeing if its recording from anywhere other than the front, its lighter and smaller and still a huge improvement over my hero that still mostly works, and the wifi/bluetooth solves any reason to have touchscreens on the cam itself. those are only used at idle, when you likely have your phone nearby anyway for the app

Considering that it costs peanuts now, definitely buy the Session.
best review video I have ever watched. Simple and to the point and honest 😄😄😄. Thanks
The difference in image quality was noticeable from the start; the side by side comparisons simply confirmed what I suspected. If tis was more like $150 they'd sell loads, but I'm not sure how many people will trade picture quality for portability.
I just got a Hero3 so I'm set for at least a year. Maybe when the 5 or 6 comes out, I'll be ready for a new camera for the race car.
Now that it's $199, would you still say that you should buy the Silver over the Session? Or does this change things?
I'm ok with having to pair it with other device to change settings... yes it possible to design unit so you can change everything by pushing buttons on unit, but it is always a pain trying to remember button order to scroll through menu, just like it is on all other GoPro's. Wow, great review. So, do you prefer the Silver vs. Black editions?
I bought it. Water and shock proof straight out of the box. So small, discrete and cool looking..
Which one would you recommend now that the session is about half the price as the silver?
In full depth, what settings did you have?
Very similar to the Polaroid Cube cam, which also has 1 main button to control the cam. the ProDrenalin software would do a good job of brightening up the color and fixing the fisheye warp in the Hero4 Session and smoothing the shakes too!
As the price has dropped a lot now on the session, which would you recommend now?
Which one is better? Any recomendation
When your talking to camera holding the gopro session, what camera are you using to video yourself speak. It's excellent quality!
Thanks for the review man! You just prevented me from splurging on a GoPro that doesnt take pretty pictures! Awesome review man! Keep it up!
If you want a tiny camera, get the Polaroid cube which is what gopro "borrowed" this shape from. It's not nearly as good, but it's only $100
Let's be honest.

Great review. Image quality DEFINITELY is king!
also the sound distorts when water waves hit the camera, reminds me the contour eeew
I've always wanted a camera for my motorcycle. The typical go pro creates too much drag. The session will be perfect for what I will be using it for.
Yeah you can change the settings on the session
So glad, I bought the Hero 4 silver a month ago. Upgraded from 3+, but when the session was announced I got a little worried that my 4 isn't as nice but now I know! Lol
Was looking at getting one of these miniature ones.... NOT ANYMORE!!! Fantastically well put together footage for comparisons. Thanks for the heads up :)
Which one should I buy for my channel like paintball and stuff?
I have the Hero4 Black and I love it. Never realised the session existed until I viewed this video, Great review.
Looking at image quality, which is better the HERO4 Session or the HERO+ (no LCD)?
I've been wanting to buy my first go pro and hopefully will get one soon thanks for doing this because I' really wanted the session for the size but after seeing the difference in image quality i don't think I'll go for that one,, but i think it's good for people that want to mount it on a helmet
Wow, thanks for the heads up. I am sticking with my Hero 3 and 3+. The new stuff is just too expensive.
Love the comparisons, and density of info in this vid; huge thanks!
Go pro silver rocks, only down side after you have the lcd bac and the whole rig is that it doesn't zoom-in. None do, somewhat of a downside. Put that in a package and you'll have the most versatile camera in the world.
Which is much better in Photos & Videos capture when you compare to GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition?
