*Marques' reviews are so helpful. He covers everything in detail and gives us a critical thinking of whether or not the product is worth buying. Thank you Mkbhd! :D*
The GoPro Hero 4 Session is absolutely perfect for attaching to flying drones, where every ounce counts towards your effective thrust/weight ratio. I thought it was purpose built for that the first time I saw it!
RatioOfOne No its just that these camera are no match for the 8K Red Dragon ;) (that said im not sure if Marques upgraded his Dragon to 8K... anyway its still a 6K camera)
Thanks for the review Marques! I'm just about to buy something for recording my live music sessions and was thinking about the small GoPro, after watching your review I might shop a bit more before making my decision. Thanks!
Have you watched any of his Ask MKBHD videos? He said that he was going to focus more on quality, not quantity. He also never promised that no school = more videos. Marques said that not being in school MIGHT mean more videos.
I like the way you're critical about a product without being negative. Nice work on that. The recent iPod review and this one are perfect examples of a great style that's very helpful. Thanks!
My immediate thought was motorcycles/bikes as a sort of dash cam. Smaller form factor and lower weight makes it more convenient to mount onto a helmet.
Can you use a portable battery to extend the battery life while filming on the GoPro Hero Session at the same time? I'm trying to be more prepared for my trip to the Bahamas and Disney World spring break of 2017. A lot is being packed into my schedule that week and I'd like to record a lot. Since I'm packing quite a bit. I've been thinking on purchasing a session. Would I be able to hook it up to a portable battery and keep it filming? Not sure if I'm making any sense. I'm also on a limited budget. Would it be better for me to go with a GoPro Hero Session or a GoPro Hero+? I see that I can add a wasabi battery extender to the back of the GoPro Hero+ for another 2 hours of recording or something like that, so I could purchase a few of those. I'm just more sold on the GoPro Hero Session and seeing the possibility of it being connected to a portable charger while keeping it filming as I go on Disney World rides, walking around the cruise ship I'm staying on, private island, etc. Times where I'm not doing crazy things in the water. Along with it being such a smaller almost unnoticeable device to record with, so it doesn't make people that uncomfortable when I'm filming with it. If the session can't record while being charged with a portable battery at the same time. I'll be leaning towards purchasing the GoPro Hero+, but then I won't have ProTune...the struggles of not having the right budget lmao. I'm looking to spend no more than $300. What would your suggestion be? Should I get either of them, or a completely different GoPro? xD
ChesBrothas I'm not sure what you mean by portable battery but the Hero Session has its own battery inside that cannot be removed or replaced, so you are limited to that ~2 hours of battery life, once it dies you have to charge it again and I don't think you can charge and record at the same time. The Hero 4 Silver and Black have replacable batteries so you can bring backups with you but they cost 399 and 499 respectively.
excellent camera for most multirotors because of the weight and quality. considering you can pick this GoPro up on eBay now for around $200 now I would say it's excellent for a lot of your lighter quads that can't carry heavy weight
At the risk of this being a stupid question, I have been trying to find someone making the comment to the answer of this question, but this issue hasn't been addressed: With the Gopro Session how do you know that you are getting on the center of your subject? You can't see what you are filming. I see vlogs of people who are talking into the gopro and their face is right at the center. How do they know how to center their face without being able to see what they are filming? If you say they have their phone with them, one - they are under water some times and two - they are walking and you can see their other hand, not holding anything. So.....? Thanks for the help.
Thanks. I ended up purchasing a Ekon for $50 which included a dozen assy. The video is super sharp, and it has a screen in the back (a knock off for Gopro silver). It's perfect for a beginner like me, who really knows nothing about taking videos or how to edit them. Thanks for taking the time to respond!
All you do is point the camera at your face. It's not that hard. Because even if it had a screen on the back it's not like you can see yourself on the screen anyway as you're recording yourself with the screen on the back.
It's not worth it. If anyone is considering it then look at something else. I used it full on since release and had too many problems with it. It's only for those who need a tiny camera
Hey Marques, first of all you made a realy good review, like always. I just wanted to mention, that your comparision of the two products (5:08) has one flaw, you did not note. You compared the recording quality of an "normal" cam with an waterproof cam, which has an additional protecting layer of glas. It is self-evident who gonna win that race. However, if you want to compare them "out of the box", without any addition bought stuff, you have a point. - Best Regards, Paul
+Original Name It actually shoots 1440p at 30 FPS. I'm not sure if they updated it or if the reviewer here was uninformed but this little guy is definitely worth the money now.
+Original Name Yeah I just got one, it is 100% worth it, I went to best buy with the money to get a Hero 4 Silver, but the guy started talking to me about the differences, and with a $200 price point, the Session, in my case, was a much better deal. Great camera.
Considering it for the $99 refurb price on woot today- trying to find out about the WiFi capability; does it also allow you to review footage from the phone, or is it strictly from view while recording? Does the app allow for that?
I picked up an HTC Re on eBay for $60.I wasn't expecting much but am extremely happy with it. Basically the same functionality as this go pro for 1/7th the cost. Best Buy has them new for $99, open box for $70.
This formfactor is awesome for drones, cause it's perfectly centered and you don't have to counter the weight on the other side. Too bad the image quality is not as good as hero4 black... I hope Hero 5 will be square as well.
Pretty cool. Soon I'm getting in to paramotoring and exploring underwater. My first thoughts were that it would suck not being able to preview it without your phone, then I realized you can't preview the screen while it's mounted to your head. Overall for the current price this little guy is amazing and I will definitely get one. If you want a traditional gopro style for a cheaper price I would suggest getting an elecam.
on thing to consider is skateboarding. There is limited clearance under the board so a smaller camera makes all the difference. plus this one can be oriented in the frame. That way you can put it under the board and not have inverted video
+Zephok Not really. There are so many better Chinese brands available these days, it doesn't make any sense spending a fortune on an outdated GoPro. you know what bro? check out the xiaomi yi camera. it's specs are pretty similar to the session 4, and the quality is really really similar if not better. You can pick one up on eBay in UK for around £60, so I'm guessing around $100?
Thanks for the review. There's plenty for me to think about right there before parting with my hard earned folding stuff. Having said all that, I'm definitely going to delve a little deeper.
Great review! It looks like it would be ideal for mounting on an RC aircraft... plane or quadcopter. Most people don't own the more expensive RC's... and the smaller, lighter camera would definitely increase maneuverability and flight time.
Good review. Thanks. Just picked up a new session for $19.95 shipped. A BIN from a newbie. My first action camera (unless my old faithful Olympus TG-1 iHS counts). Looking at it for backpacking and bike trips. Should do the job even if it isn't the best, but the price was.
Great review! I already have the GoPro Hero 4 Session and i use it for biking. Till now i'm really glad i decided to go for the little cube instead of the other GoPros. Not missing anything on it right now
Great tutorial , I appreciate it. I bought mine at Best Buy for about $149 plus tax. The accessories, like mount for a chest harness or helmet are extra..I need to learn all of the ins and outs, and fine tune the settings with my cell phone ( Andriod LG Verizon V20).
I think what it also can be for is, when working on something with both hands, Using the chest strap. Can show things hands free if you dont mind not being in the video, unless showing in a mirror. Like today i was adding a windshield too my motorcycles. I had to move the camera around, or bring what i was working on too the camera. This go pro session is one third the size of my handy cam. I also bought the chest strap with this session go pro. It would probably work pretty good with somebody riding a bicycle. Not good with a motorcycle i think, Because the wind would overwhelm the sound. Would not be able to hear yourself over the wind. From this video, it looks like it still has the fish eyes lense. What i like about the other go pros is, you can add an outside camera, and put the mic in a better place to keep the wind out of the mic.
For freeskiiers doing flips it's perfect. The weight of the other gopros on your helmet can easily disorient your rotation when flipping and spinning off of those giant kickers
Hi, good job on the review! I would of loved to see in future reviews more of what the cameras can do, like, recordings under water, high wind noise and night time too. Cheers.
I realise I'm a few years behind the state of the art here, but I'm looking for a cycle commute camera and the small frontal area and low weight of this makes it attractive. Do you think it would hold up for that? Thanks!
I've got a GoPro hero 4 session recently and I am perfectly happy with it. The only problem with it is the big lense as it is hard to keep clean. But apart from that a great little camera!
I recently purchased the GoPro session ($180) very useful during my cycling rides because it's lightweight compact. I may get the GoPro remote to save the battery life on my phone.
Appreciate the video. It changed my mind on getting it. I was planning on getting one for documenting climbs and hikes but if the battery is only two hours and can’t be switched out that’s a deal breaker. Thanks again
Slapping that on a RC plane or quadcopter is easier than a bigger goPro. The weight alone is a huge factor along with the smaller footprint, making it more aerodynamic. I think I may pick one up
Nice job. The side-by-side is _very_ informative. Not only is the dynamic range much lower on the Session, it gives your face an unpleasant kind of plastic look. I don't know if they're doing something weird in the compression or what but the effect is very noticeable. It undoubtedly carries over into everything, but it is very noticeable on faces.

Overwerk is the man! You should do something with him, like a video about electronic music producing, or DJ equipment. It could be really interesting.
This might be worth it now with the recent announcement of a big price drop. It now seems like it's the entry gopro. Great review man, as always. Much love from over the Pond in the UK here :)
I just ordered a session 4. It's decent value now, I paid less than £140 for it. The cheapest I can get a hero 4 silver at the moment is £220. So for my first gopro it seems good value.

Hmm. It seems like that would work (having a power bank plugged into the session) but you have to keep it mind that it looses its waterproof functionality when the door on the side is open, revealing the micro USB port. However, I believe you could buy the hero+ with the expandable battery, and buy a waterproof case to fit with the expandable battery from Wasabi. So if you need waterproof, go with the hero+ with the wasabi expansion, and a waterproof housing that fits the expansion. Or, get a session and keep the side door open, and buy maybe an ANKER A7 26000 mah battery to keep that thing alive all day long. And, when you don't need to charge it, and you need it for the water, just unplug it. And when you need to charge it up, plug it in until the next adventure. I don't actually have a session so I'm not to sure on this, but I have looked around and have seen reviews and other things on it, so it seems right to me. Peace ✌️️
Will2114 That's what I'm thinking! I've got a few more months before the trip so I can test out this process. I'm not going to do a lot of waterproof stuff. More land rides at Disney, Cruise ship, private island, etc. nothing water crazy as far as I know of. Nothing like diving lol. I'll check out that battery pack! Thanks for the reply! :D
It would be good for skydiving. Less snag points, don't need raw audio in 120 mph wind. Bright sunny day will benefit the sensor quality for video, and skydiving lasts roughly 5-10 minutes of video each round. Push on and record is nice when don't want to worry about it being in wrong mode or not on at all. Camera could have potential
Great review and damn your editing skills are on point bro.
I felt the need to include myself here
I was just about to say the same ! Wow man, superb review, superb edit, super video !

Nothing better when you're looking for a review on a tech product and see mkbhd has a review on it
This is pretty interesting... I am not sure what I think about this... I may have to play with it to decide.
DoctaM3 There he is! :)
It's worth it at 199$ now!
That’s what she said😂
i dont even care about what the videos are on i just watch your videos because theyre yours
I love how he gives his honest opinions on everything he reviews. He doesn't make everything seem perfect. Man I love this guy.
Amazing videos! Keep it up!
Eyo hello there. Your videos inspire me to wanting to do cliff jumping…but alas in India where I live I don’t know anyone or any place to do that🥲
The GoPro Hero 4 Session is absolutely perfect for attaching to flying drones, where every ounce counts towards your effective thrust/weight ratio. I thought it was purpose built for that the first time I saw it!

RatioOfOne I guess so, it wasn't just for you it happened to me too.
RatioOfOne No its just that these camera are no match for the 8K Red Dragon ;)
(that said im not sure if Marques upgraded his Dragon to 8K... anyway its still a 6K camera)
Benoit Levesque No not comparing it to the Dragon , but comparing it to other videos with GoPro 4 on youtube.
RatioOfOne The background had a lot of detail in it. RUclips tries to keep the same amount of data in that frame so compromises a lot.
Mr. Taco *looks
Now that this has a price drop for 199.99, is it a better deal?
Definitely. I'm getting one to do biking videos around the city with my friends

Maybe he's got a job... Idk just guessing
He needed money to pay for college hence more videos. More videos>more views>more money

Have you watched any of his Ask MKBHD videos? He said that he was going to focus more on quality, not quantity. He also never promised that no school = more videos. Marques said that not being in school MIGHT mean more videos.
Tryhard no just bust w/ other things dude... also One+2 drops tomorrow!! so their will be a vid on that and the Note 5 and next nexus phone!
I have one on my helmet and one in the rear under the fairing behind my license plate cars can't see it but I can see them 😄
Bought the GoPro Hero 4 Session at 199, totally worth it if you already don't have a GoPro.
Should I get this session instead of the GoPro Hero + plus (both 199)
I have the same question. Did you buy any?

it is worth it now after the huge discount. £159 in the UK :D
Don't think it's necessary unless you need a smaller gopro or have the extra money. Hero4 Silver's specs are superior to this one.
+Jonny Kanthan it's 200 bucks now..so...
It's worth it now!!!
+Jonny Kanthan true
I'm going to pick one up!
Next generation Session should record 4K, or even 8K, video.
Boogster Su lol 8k today costs around 50k USD with that red camera, and that's the only option to record in 8k ATM...
8k xD
***** 69k m69
Well it's rumored the hero 5 will have 8k recording and it'll cost $700 at the most

excellent camera for most multirotors because of the weight and quality. considering you can pick this GoPro up on eBay now for around $200 now I would say it's excellent for a lot of your lighter quads that can't carry heavy weight
Thanks to YT for recommending this, seven years later.

Was it the right or the left one with the session footage? I couldn't tell at 4:50
I got the sensation today as a birthday gift and I'm excited haven't tested it out but thanks for the review!
its clear on every one of his videos that he puts a ton of time and effort in
I think what it also can be for is, when working on something with both hands, Using the chest strap. What i like about the other go pros is, you can add an outside camera, and put the mic in a better place to keep the wind out of the mic.
your videos are incredibly cool. Extremely informative and well filmed.
I glued the Session to the side of my helmet and use it as an insurance cam, works great. The compact size is the best part.
Cheers.
For high wind noise, make a little foam muffler over both mics, not difficult and it really helps.
Dude, your reviews are really good. Thanks, and keep up the good work.
Great straight to the point review👍🏻
Bestbuy has a deal now that for 200 bucks you get the session, headstrap, floaty handheld and a program to edit and stuff. Just picked mine up.
Thanks for this vid. I was wondering if you can put an external mic in it? I will use it for my motorbike. Thanks.
Was going to purchase one of these for the helmet but your review has really given me good advice to look else where. Thanks!
I think the smaller discrete form factor would make this great for a helmet cam for BMX or cycling or as a motorcyclist crash monitoring camera
Hey Marques, are you going to do a comparison against the SJ Cam M10 Cube. The cube M10 is $99 on eBay and it kills the Session.
I think I may pick one up
I'm so glad it's $200 now, and also you can now change the settings on the GoPro, not needing to use the app.
Much love from over the Pond in the UK here :)
great review but the sjcsm m20 trumps this now
i really like the gopro one touch record and lapse feature though.
Awesome review bro! I love the last part especially.
already have the hero 4 silver but after seeing this review im sold on the session !
Nice work *****
Thanks for posting and good review as I want to get one and like the small compact design and like the fact it water proof keep up the good work
I love when you do those transitions from different video to video
As usual, your videos are really helpful. Thanks for this, I was really considering the session but then I saw your video.
I just ordered a session 4. It's decent value now, I paid less than £140 for it. The cheapest I can get a hero 4 silver at the moment is £220. So for my first gopro it seems good value.
Thanks. Good review. Like the video comparison with the regular GoPro. Exactly what I was after.
Should I get either of them, or a completely different GoPro? xD
Wow, this was a really well-made review! Good job man
Who else is watch this when the camera is $150 laughing at people who bought it at $400 😂
industrial_aviiation got one for $150 a year and a half ago and just bought another one this week for $99.99 in a bundle case. 😀👍
Your video review is very well done and helpful! Especially the side by side parts.
It may not have a display but it has a wide lense so it's easy to capture yourself if vlogging
The OVERWERK song at the end. That "Matter" remix.
DAT OVERWERK ENDING PART ♥
Awesome Vidz *****!
