About 18.00 hours (6.00 pm) on Monday 3rd of August 2015: A rally in Leipzig which drew both supporters and opponents of Pegida was about to begin.
The event, which attracted both supporters and opponents of Pegida, took place outside the ‘Hofe am Brühl’ shopping mall at about 6 o’clock on Monday evening the 3rd of August. I used a small hand held video camera to record this panning shot of Leipzig as I walked away from the Hauptbahnhof (‘Central Railway Station’) to meet the local contact who had invited me along. Although I have good holiday German much of what was said by the various speakers turned out to be way beyond the reach of my level of fluency in German.
There was also a strong Polizei (police) presence - I counted more than 60 police cars, many of them from Dresden, the city where Pegida was launched less than 12 months ago.
The police made sure that the supporters and opponents of Pegida were kept apart - I estimate that there were almost 100 yards between both groups so that, even though there was much verbal abuse, nobody got hurt as far as I could see.
