    Great video series! In the past you have mentioned that that there were new standards in the works when it came to viewing distance, I think it was a video with youth man, but I have not seen any follow up on that.
    Can you speak to the topic? Seems a lot of people are saying the current standards are too conservative but can’t quantify what are good values.
    Would 60-67 degrees too close on a 2.4 screen?

    • @PoesAcoustics
      @PoesAcoustics  6 месяцев назад

      58 degrees is the ITU recommendation for a 3840x2160 screen, which is a 1.78:1 screen ratio. With constant height screens, it's been suggested that the content of 2.40:1 should include perifpheral information. By that argument, if we then widen the screen, keeping the height constant for the above, we end up with around 72 degrees, something like that. So we have been suggesting 60-70 degrees as reasonable for scope, but trying to stay under 60 for non-scope contant as it could be a bit overwhelming.
      However, one of the big conversations we have been having is that there isn't a single right viewing angle and directors don't intend for their to be one. Apparently, they themselves may move their position relative to the screen. Different directors even have different preferences. Ultimately I think the right angles can range from 40 degrees to 70 degrees and anything in the middle. All are OK.

    Thanks for the vids! Would love if one day you explained how MSO works

    • @PoesAcoustics
      @PoesAcoustics  6 месяцев назад +1

      The designer of MSO has a lot of content on it. He and I don't get along, he's made clear he doesn't like me, so I would be nervous to do content on his product only to have him come after iot. I think its a great product, its clearly effective (and I've used it and recommend it), but beyond that I've stayed away from detailed discussions.

    Being within a small room I was a little concerned about experiencing too much room gain, so rather going with towers I decided to go with standmounts (bookshelves) and then having them go full range with the help of a stereo pair of high-performance Rel subwoofers.
    Even though my small 13 x 11.5 ft living room has a full Dolby Atmos setup, my listening habits are 75/25 in favour of two channel music.
    I used to have a pair of 12-inch subs. Not only did I find they too much for my small room, but I also found them a little sluggish with my music, plus I also never stopped getting complaints for my lovely neighbours.
    I managed to kill two birds with one stone by swapping them over for a pair of high-performance 8" Rel musical subwoofers. They have two separate connections. The 0.1 LFE, which most people are familiar with, and they also have a separate high-level connection. Basically a separate supplied cable connected to the back of the AVR speaker binding posts gives one's stereo speakers the ability to go full range (perfect for small environments where room gain is likely to be an issue)
    The extra added beauty of this particular connection, when switching from HT to two channels (or vice versa) no more, having to do alterations.
    Plus, no more complaints from the lovely neighbours.

    As you mentioned Anthony Grimani, what does his Home Cinema look like? Does he have similar base rules to yourself (of course with his own speakers I’m guessing 😁)

    • @PoesAcoustics
      @PoesAcoustics  6 месяцев назад +1

      He doesn’t have a home cinema. He has a shop cinema. It’s setup at his office. His bass is setup with four subs. Similar to my setup but he doesn’t use ART or Waveforming.

    To the first person email. Why not employ 4 Definitive Technology BP9000 x speakers in the 4 main corners of the room. Instead of using Speaker-Level + LFE with a RCA “Y” connector. Let's connect the Definitive Technology BP9000 speakers to the non bass bi wired connectors and use 4 x RCA connections for directional bass from the the AV10. Can't we channel directional bass quadrants from the Front Left and Right, Rear Back Right and Left of the Marantz subwoofer 1 - 4 output and start using active bass in these speakers controlled completely by the processor?
    I don't like active bass tower speakers without a low level / LFE input. Do not rely on these expensive towers and their crossover that you can't control from your AV10.

      @robcohen 6 месяцев назад

      It's no different than having subs next to every speaker. On the other hand, if you treat the speakers as "small" and connect them to sub channels, you can use them to manage room modes, using a variety of strategies (including DLBC.) As Matt said, the benefits of that generally outweigh directional bass, but it doesn't hurt to experiment to see what you prefer.

    • @chebrubin
      @chebrubin 6 месяцев назад

      @robcohen my scenario is using full range active loudspeakers and avoiding the high level speaker bi wire post interfaces and the crossover. The Marantz tech lets you pump LFE into your main channels too. I would prefer to use a RCA input for subwoofer 1 - 4 out into 4 x active Definitive Technology speakers.

      @@chebrubin it's hard to predict what will work best, since the woofer is shared between speaker and sub duties. The main problem is that you might end up with different speaker vs sub delays causing electronic cancellation. Regardless, there are 3 options to try, assuming you don't have separate subs. 1) Speakers set to "large" sending LFE to large speakers with no LFE input connection. 2) Speakers set to "large" sending LFE to speakers using 1 sub out split 4 ways (3 y-adapters.) 3) Speakers set to "small" sending 4 sub outs to the 4 LFE inputs. My guess is that 1 & 3 would work better than 2.

    • @chebrubin
      @chebrubin 6 месяцев назад

      @robcohen I like the later options.
      Paradigm makes some huge full range towers with active bass and ARC room correction DSP in the 🔊 speaker bass system. But no LFE or RCA outputs. In this case I would suggest sending LFE to a Large front speaker and no crossover correction. Although I like your option 4 for speakers like the Defintive BPs that have RCA inputs.
      Imagine next years Marantz AV10 when the include Sony 360 Spatial DSP for better steering.
