This video came at the perfect time. A massive truth bomb. As a traveller; you sometimes forget this side of thinking . Our brains are programmed to think the taxi drivers/ locals are scammers out to get us. Of course there has to be a balance but this video certianly hit home. Thank you 🙏🏽
I appreciate you tackling a hard topic to discuss. As long term travelers ourselves, I think I mostly agree with you in context. I will haggle when I need to but I'm not going to lose sleep. over getting tourist pricing that adds a buck. Sometimes entrance fees are 10x what the locals pay, and this also doesn't bother me much. Glad to contribute to maintaining some of these amazing sites. I do question tipping a bit more though. Tipping culture is something we think is normal and "nice" in the USA, when really we've been brainwashed into thinking that by business owners that want to underpay their staff who then rely on tips to make up their salary. In many other places in the world, their salary is actually fair wage, so they don't need to rely on tips the same way. I've spoken with locals who don't want us to tip and bring that culture to their country, because as tipping becomes customary, it then raises prices for locals too. Now in your example with the guy who went above and beyond in the boat, that is different, and I think it is great to show appreciation that way. But as a routine thing, I try and follow what is the normal practice in that country. I might round up, but I don't leave a 20% tip just because that's what I'm used to in the US. That has consequences too. But yes, this is a great conversation to have.
