If I had your wall, folks, I would be greedy and have both!
Stick with the 85 for most things, like TV, streaming, news, gaming, and most sports. Whilst also keeping reference quality colour and motion.
Then have a drop down projector screen for film night (not even all films, perhaps) at a MUUUUUCH larger size. Using tone-mapping to solve the lack of Dolby Vision on projectors that are within the reach of us mere mortals. 😏 (none of this ust projector stuff for me, though)

Great review. I've had about 15 front projectors over the last 30+ years. My current front projection setup is about $3300 with my 106" screen but can do about a 125" from the spot it is mounted. It's in my living room and I do have a few blackout curtains, but light does come from other rooms. The picture still amazes me. We rarely encounter too much light that would bleed the colors, but it does happen occasionally. The thing I love about a projector is the extremely wide viewing angle, and the zero-glare image. I need to have a 98" tv at the $4-$5k range to make me want to switch, and even at that, it's a compromise on size. Just like 98" seems that much bigger than an 85", a 106 or 110" is that much bigger than a 98". At the sale price of $5k or less, I'm probably a buyer. If it hits less than $4k, I am a buyer.

You get it 😉 A lot of people forget (or don't know) that I come from a projection background. I used projectors in my main living room for years. So I'm not poo-pooing on projectors, it's just that as time and tech have evolved, TVs have gotten bigger and better, that for many, a 98" display is "big enough" to be theatrical --especially in true, mixed lighting situations.

Even a 98” won’t be big enough for a true cinematic experience. Plus I don’t like the way TVs look for movies, I prefer projector. Yes TVs are sharper and look better (though the Epson LS12000 is a beast and so are JVCs and they aren’t that far off quality wise) but for me there is magic when watching a movie on a projector vs a tv

They released a 98" model but only in China and outside only having 52 backlit zones it seems almost identical to this one. Dolby Vision, HDR, 1600 nits per TCL, for 21,999 yuan. You know what that converts to in US dollars?
3012 dollars US. I would take the less zones for that price but obviously it isn't being released in the US but I'm expecting something similar by TCL for that price in the US next year. Obviously that's a guess but still, 3K for a 98" TV and yes, it has VRR, 2.1 and all the gaming features this model has. The TCL Q10G is a Mini LED TV with 672 partitions. I haven't looked at mini LEDs recently but that's a copy and paste from an article so I'm not even sure what partitions are but it's in the article I read so just passing the information along. Just search for the model number to see for yourself, well, see the article/articles anyways. No idea why it's only being released in China.

    • @JoshFisher567
      @JoshFisher567 Год назад

@@PerfectorZY Well for 5.9 million you can get Sony's 780" 16K modular LED TV. Obviously that's expensive but 780" and 16K which at that size it would actually need to be because of size as 4K would not look good on something that size .
It seems like they are mostly being used to replace green screens right now as Disney uses them for all their shows now instead of green screens so the actors can see what's going on around them. Apparently it's been making some actors sick it's so realistic according to what some actors have said. Oh, rich people, they have them also.

I bought the original 65 825 mini led set and the color balance and flesh tones was right on the money, plus the black levels and lack of blooming was excellent. If this set can come close to that at this size they have a winner.
I upgraded to a Sony 75 Z9K and I get what you say about the picture processing and dimensionality of the picture is just on another level. It should be for the money they charge but it blows away my TCL when watching any high bitrate 4khdr or 1080p content and the colors out of the box sre perfect, then you have so many adjustments to make it look even better.
I paid 1400 for the TCL and I still love watching it in my bedroom, if I hadn't come into enough money to afford my 8k mini led beast I'd still be happy with the TCL in my living room. If you want really big and don't have Sony money my bet is you'll love the XL TCL.

I picked one of these up last year while it was on sale to replace a 120" projector screen (biggest I can go in my space). The step down in size was noticeable at first but like you said, you get used to size changes relatively quickly.
I have a multi-purpose space and the ability to have lights on and still get a good image is well worth the trade-off in my eyes. My biggest concern was viewing angles, but I watch from all over the place and I don't think the image quality diminishes enough to be an issue.

Great video!! I’ve been looking towards UST as a possible solution since I have a family room 7.2.4 setup with a 75” LG led tv now. Many like me have certain limitations like room brightness and functional usability. I’d have to spend another $3k just to rework my electronics cabinet with a Salamander or BDI, so I’m always conscious of that additional cost factor. Now that very large screens are becoming cost effective, I think it’s just a matter of time that this will ultimately be our best solution. Thanks again for your work on this one. If you keep it, we’d love to have a video describing how you’ve discovered pros & cons over time.

It is also worth noting that you cannot have true HDR with front projection since there is no way to do local dimming with reflected light, just an HDR tone-mapped image, and I just don't count that as true HDR, though I have seen some QLEDs do a good job with dual color backlit LEDs without local dimming. Still though, a projector cannot make that kind of contrast, even a really good sony or JVC.
That said, I made my theater with a false wall, three identical tower speakers, and a 128" acoustically transparent screen, making a cinema-like soundstage that is hard to make with a TV with speakers around it set up. All tradeoffs.

If you're comparing in the neighborhood of 120" or less with a projector, I will buy that this is competition. However, there are many that have very large projection screens. Mine has 3 times the surface area of a 98" tv.
Seeing your enthusiasm for sheer size, and I will agree, size is king with a movie experience, you can NOT compare this tv to the awe factor of a projection screen.
Will I ever be tempted by a television? Could be, but not until they are 3 times this size, and that won't happen.

Enjoy it thoroughly and I too was looking to go down the road of the UST projectors to try and recreate the experience of a cinema but the flexibility and reality of home viewing and flexible light viewing. you can always go bigger and naturally as humans we will always want bigger, but there is a point where you’re watching a movie and forget that the screen exists, and that is the primary goal, not sheer size.

of course if you’re building an entire home theatre with more than a single row of seats, its not gonna be ideal. but 98” is pretty damn close and is usually the starting place for projector screen size. and you’re certainly spending a minimum of 50 grand.

While this cost about the same as a decent project ($4k)... for the cost of the sq-ft home size increase, plus 155" screen, etc. I can buy a whole bunch of powered shades and lighting controls to use this TCL in a Gr8/Living Room.
So, YES, this will work for me too!
    Cheers, Eric

Thats the video I was waiting for. I've been rocking a Vava 4k UST + Vividstorm 120" ALR screen for the past two years - the cinema immersion can't be beat (incl. the wife being just in love with it) and its really difficult to go to anything thats smaller - BUT - Everything you said rings true!
Getting the UST setup just right, paranoia once you figured it out that somebody bumps into it and washed out picture during the day, etc. The center speaker issue I fixed good enough for me a a good while ago with 2x 1st gen Homepods as my main audio setup through Apple TV (+Arc functionality for the PS5) ;). Honestly though - TCL 2nd gen with 98" at under 5k and I'd switch in a heartbeat!

I installed commercial TV's and AV systems for 8 years. When I started, an 80" was the largest I put in, most recently, these 98s were routinely sold. When the size first came out, they were SO heavy, took at least 3 guys to hang, or 4 like me! We ONLY used Chief brand mounts, I consider them the best for hanging displays that size. Transporting these huge displays required use of a trailer, they didn't have a box truck, and we routinely received damaged displays from shipping. Personally, I like my projector for movies, but only because it was free!

Love the TV. It seems like an awesome product. If I had a dedicated space for my tv, then I’d definetly consider a big tv like this one.
I’ve said it before in this channel but Im commenting for new viewers. The reason Im using a projector (and will continue to do so) is for space considerations. My wife did not want a huge black square in the middle of the livingroom (the tv when in off state) and she also wanted a bookshelf (a big one). So the only way we could have a huge screen, lots of books and not having the visual impact of a huge tv-monitor was to go for projection with a ceiling mounted electric screen that drops down in front of the bookshelf when in use, and gets out of the way when not in use. We’ve never regretted that decision. Of course, the black levels is not OLED. But it’s still very impressive and cinematic while taking very little space.
This could be a tip for anyone having the same discussions at home 😊

TCL has really taken over as the king of value TV's. They are putting out a really quality product with great picture in the last couple of years. In terms of "larger always being better" I have to disagree though - this is 100% dependent on your space and your viewing distance. You got a big room that you've designed for a huge screen which is perfect. For me, having a giant screen when you're sitting only 5-6 ft away is an eye killer though. I tried a 65 inch at 5ft and had a very hard time with part of the screen being in my peripheral vision, had to swap back to 55 inch.
Curious if you've guys have had a chance to view or review any of Sony's OLEDs. I have an A80J and I absolutely love it...the A95K is mind blowing, and I believe Sony is close to announcing their new lineup in the next couple of months. Sony is the king of picture quality right now, in my opinion at least 🙃

This TCL 98 inch TV is currently $10,000 at Canada's BestBuy (higher than the U.S. dollar to Canadian dollar exchange rate), but there are 85 inch TV's that are $2,500 to $3,000, so just as those larger TV's are becoming more affordable and attainable, so will this TCL model or future models. Not at $8 thousand. I agree that a big TV beats Ultra-short-throw dealies, and I’d be excited to see LG/Samsung/etc enter the 75”+ space more earnestly and drive down costs, but I don’t think it replaces the 120”+ hardcore setups of the world. I doubt the market would ever carve out an affordable space for panels of that size. As you saw firsthand that’s an utterly unwieldy amount of TV to move and deal with, and I’d warrant that 98-100” is probably the maximum reasonable size. If you have the dedicated space, wherewithal, budget, and desire to go bigger you could build a pretty sweet traditional setup for $8 grand.

I am facing the decision between a UST or something like this for a media room at about a 9-10ft distance. I tried the sizes in a store and felt 100 inches was good, 110 really nice, and 120 nice, but a tad large for TV shows.
    Pros for TV are:
Easy setup (with stone walls) since prep work is already in the wall
    Image quality
    Usable during the day
    Gaming/HFR
    No risk of bumping it
    HDR
    Blacks
    Dolby Vision
Somewhere to put a center channel
    No noise
Ability to put anywhere on the wall
    No issues with white walls/ceiling
Ambilight behind the screen is possible
Lower cost than UST + screen (4000€ on sale versus about 7 grand for a good UST plus CLR at 120 inches)
    Pros for the projector are:
    Size (110 or 120)
    Easier RMA/selling for upgrades
    More eye-friendly image
The list of arguments is really favouring the TV here to be honest.

I’m not necessarily a die-hard projector guy, I would use a large screen tv for home theater purposes. In fact, until recently I was using a 75-inch TCL in my theater. Now, I’m using a projector. I like the bigger size. It has that cinema feel.
I wouldn’t mind having a 97 tv in my theater, outside of mounting, it’s a lot easier to set up than a projector. However, my house is old and I don’t even know how they got a refrigerator through those doors. I won’t be able to get that 97incher down the stairs into the basement where my theater sits.
I will say though, if I could build my ideal home theater, I’d go with a front projector. That’s because my ideal screen would be a 150-inch scope screen and you can’t get that with TVs yet. Plus, I’ve been chasing that movie-like experience since I was 6 years old. Projectors give me that feeling. My theater is only used for watching movies (and music listening), no tv watching, and no video games, so I can live with a projector’s limitations. That’s not to say if TV manufacturers created a 150-inch scope tv I wouldn’t consider it, hell yeah I would, especially if it’s simpler and more cost-effective. I’d probably put up a fake projector though for looks. let’s face it, projectors are synonymous with theater.
If we are talking living room, family room, or game room I’m going TVs all the way. If they improve the setup with a certain amount of adjustability with zoom and lens shift I’d consider an ultra-short projector for a living/family room, but 95 percent of the time, TVs are the choice.
I think TVs will always dominate, but I don’t think USTs will go away. They will get better and likely easier to set up giving people options.

I'm quite impressed with this TV, especially on the price to size ratio. What I would love to see from the likes of TCL, being a panel maker, is to bring out a similar screen, height wise, but one that is in a 235.1 ratio. I think that even on a 75 or 85 inch screen, this would be a market disruptor that would catch a few manufactures off guard and bring something unique to the consumer masses that truely screams home cinema.

  • @stevewright1539
    @stevewright1539 Год назад

Okayyyyy...questions. Most fun?! Is that due to size, image quality or both? Does the TCL exhibit issues maybe not seen with front projection like blooming? At 98/96" do you think size and PQ win out over a 100" projected screen? Not sure if this is a total game changer but the goal post have definitely been moved closer. I see no current project compelling enough for me to move away from my Epson 5050UB and I do know there are better projectors. Unless a screen size over 100" current projectors are a stopgap until OLED or MiniLED prices for those larger TV's come down a bit. Bottom line, I pull the trigger on a 96" OLED at 10K and ditch front projection.

So im looking at the TCL 85 inch model, has 144hz refresh, Dolby Vision etc and is selling for £1600 in the UK. As I only sit about 8 feet from the screen that should be fine. My current 75 inch LG will go to the wifes rig, and I get a bigger screen with 144hz, I can plug my very powerful 24 Core PC into for 4K GAMING. as well and movie fun. Current AV set up is Denon 6700H 3 Klipsch speakers for front, powered by a Emotiva Basx A3, 4 Monitor Audio Bronze 100's for side and rear surrounds, powered by an Emotiva BasX A4. 6 Bowers and Wilkins M-1's as heights powered by the Denon, plus 2 SVS PB1000's subs. I live in a ground floor flat so that's more than enough for me, and my neighbours. PS the Mrs is sulking as she want's to buy it now, and I told her we got to wait a few weeks, until I save up a little more. lol

My theater is limited to 85" max due to wall size and distance from the screen so no projector. It hurts to see this one and know it is all that and a box of chocolates but for me.... lol Thanks for a great review.

The price would have to be cut by more than 50 percent before I would start to consider it. I currently run with a epson ls 500 and 100 inch alr screen. Total cost was 2800 before tax. Ive never found black levels important to my viewing (and the epsons arent bad for a projector) and the epson can pump 4k ansi lumens so ambient light has never really been an issue. The biggest thing keeping me in the projector life though is 3d tech. I just love the stuff

Andrew is it safe to say that you and Kristi, will keep this TV on the wall now? Great review by both of you thanks. Also you helped me decide what TV to get because I want to replace my Sony A9G 65” for a 77” TV because I’m about 14ft from the set but if on the wall it would be 17ft. I was told the LG G2, would be the way to go and you confirmed it. So, what do you two think 77” LG, over Sony X95K??

We haven't tested the G2 but the other comparisons are made in the review. Not taking it down any time soon considering how much it took to get on the wall!
