You can lower the noise floor even more with an individual Mic pre-amp like the Simply Sound SS-1 or Fethead. The UMC series (204 or 404HD) from Behringer is probably the best deal on the low end
Precisely what I have done on mine using the Simply Sound SS-1, these inline pre-amps are awesome, I don't need to move the 204 gain up hardly at all to get the meter in the zone for recording now. Sometimes I have to use the PAD button to keep it in range.
I just got this same interface and this same mic but I'm not getting absolutely any signal from the mic on the interface, I made sure that my XLR cables work with a different microphone, made sure the microphone works with a speaker, and updated the interface to the latest drivers... any idea what could be the issue?
Hello thanks for the video i have an issue with my microphone bm800 when i connect it with the behringer um2 doesn't work , i install the driver and i make it on with Fenton power i do all the instructions but still not working please help and thanks
I have a umc202hd and just got an sm58 and its terrible how much line noise there is. Even at 2 inches from my face and audio gain at 80% I still have to boost audio and the noise is really bad.
Greetings from Brazil I love your videos testing and comparing always the core products that people are looking to buy. Do you have a video comparisson between low / mid -price microphones?
I have the Steinberg UR22 MkII and it doesn't seem to have adequate gain for my Shure SM58. Wondering if I have a lemon or if the Behringer is a better pieve of gear
SM 58 is dynamic, which mean no need phantom power to use it. But, this mic is really need a good internal pre amp (i mean on Audio Interface), to work properly.
Really interested in the combination of UMC202HD (i think it's basically the same pre-amps as the 204 right?) and the XM8500 for a budget setup. I would use it for streaming, and am considering a budget condenser mic in addition for post-produced voice-over (any recommendations on a mic or the setup I outlined)? Leaning towards the UMC202HD since getting it and the XM5800 costs the same here as a single Scarlett Solo 2nd gen (I don't think the difference in price is justified to get the Scarlett). But again I suck at this, so would greatly appreciate some help and some input. The only video on my channel currently has voice recorded with a Samson C01U usb microphone and that thing is so silent I have to crank the windows gain to 95, and then I get barely a decent gain but a lot of ambient noise, peaking and a slew of other issues that even my meager post-processing skills can't fix. That's what I'm trying to upgrade from. Will be using this in a largely untreated environments and want to use the dynamic mic for both scenarios if possible, but am concerned about the volume levels if I record at more than a few inches away. Again lovely videos I love both your channels, and thank you in advance for any help or advice.
I bought both of these and even the other budget mic that preceded it. I'm no audio expert, but I wanted to make sure that you were aware of some issues I was having with this setup. Disclaimer: I do have a lot of cords. I started having a lot of problems with interference. It's very annoying but not only that, my microphones cannot have a pop filter on them. For whatever reason, it increases the background noise that it picks up in my room. I'm baffled by this. Additionally, with the XM8500, I was getting some vibration from the arm it was attached to and the only way to cease the vibration noise I'd pick up in Audacity was to physically hold it and talk into it. I had similar problems with the 85A. My room is untreated. Now, a lot of this can be fixed post-processing, but I did find it quite a pain to have to do all that. I picked up a Rode Procaster (not cheap by any means, but at this point I was considering an SM7B and other things) and the rejection of background noise is great. There's a low level of background noise but it's WAY less annoying than the X8500's and one that can be probably edited out in a single audio noise profile in Audacity. It might be worthwhile to treat the room if possible. My computer is pretty heavy duty and loud. Additionally, I've had zero problems with the UMC202HD. No doubt, you can get awesome sound from the XM8500, but it's been giving me a headache when making RUclips commentary.
Another great video! I was wondering if you could do a comparison or just give your opinion if you'd prefer the SM58 or the AT2020? I know they were meant for different uses, I personally would like to record voiceacting at home, so I wouldn't use either for live performance. Currently I have a Shure PG58 with a Xenyx302USB and although I like it very much, I'd like to upgrade the mic to a crisper sounding one.
The UM2 supports up to 16-Bit, 48kHz. You could get a good output, but in return that noise floor will creep up on you. I'd recommend (assuming you're still under the 3 year warranty,) sending the interface back, and purchasing an interface that supports a higher bit depth of 24. The 24-Bit Depth would essentially make that hiss go away in terms of background noise, and make your overall microphone quality increase. The one showed in this video is awesome for the price.
SinSiiYT For some reason the mic won’t even accept picking up anything. Just has a static noise. And the interface just has a constant popping and hissing and it’s not even useable after 3 days.
Catnip God Yeah, some things wrong with that particular interface, just return it and switch it out for a new one. This interface is awesome for the price, so dont worry it's a good interface, there is just most likely something wrong with the one you got. Probably damaged in transit to the store.
I have the SM57 and at that gain knob position (75%), I only get upto -18 dB. The quality control on these suck big time it seems. I even got a different box than what you unboxed and there was no USB cable. So pretty much a lower quality version for my country :(
Does shure sm58 and Beringer u phoria..perfect combination for home studio recording using a fl studio software..plz help..I yesterday order that..plz help
hello idol, I have a thick face, Idol maybe you have a Second hand Audio Interface that you don't use idol anymore, Hehehe I'm sorry idol maybe you have an old one there that I would have asked for because I don't have the audio interface to buy, thank you very much, sorry too 😅❤️
This type of review is really helpful to test different scenarios. Thank you!
I am really impressed with the UMC204HD audio interface. Those Midas pre-amps seem to have very little line noise.
That's very true.
For gain hungry mics, XM8500/SM7B, that push the gain knob to about 90% the 204HD gets noisy and I mean a lot of noise too.
@@generalawareness101 so Cloudlifter will be solution ?
@@fatihakturko Very much so.
I was looking for this video for a long time, thank you!
Would this preamp also work with the shure sm7b?

Hi. Can you test the UMC204HD AND/OR the 2i2 with two condenser microphones? Please?
I just got this same interface and this same mic but I'm not getting absolutely any signal from the mic on the interface, I made sure that my XLR cables work with a different microphone, made sure the microphone works with a speaker, and updated the interface to the latest drivers... any idea what could be the issue?

check your phantom power, is it on or off.
i literally heard no line noise with audio technica m40x at 70 percent

Very helpful thanks, this preamp is crazy good

Wondering if I have a lemon or if the Behringer is a better pieve of gear
So I found this from checking out how you setup your channel page......
Even more Bandrew for this goat :)
Can you test it with the sm7b
If we connect SM 58 to phantom power adapter and then to audio interface, the quality of sound will be better or not? Please reply.
SM 58 is dynamic, which mean no need phantom power to use it. But, this mic is really need a good internal pre amp (i mean on Audio Interface), to work properly.
Is there anyway you can test if the sm7b can run on the xenyx 302usb with and without a dbx 286s in the chain?
Do you or anyone else recommend using a cloudlifter with this particular mic/interface setup??
Can You Make A video on RODE Podmic connected to Behringer UMC204HD. Thank You
