What I liked about the Ewoks is it shows that anybody can contribute. Think about it. The Emperor is going over the plan and who doesn't he plan for? It was the Ewoks. And it lead to his doom.

I sent that picture to a mate with whom I have historically shared amusement over the line in ROTJ; he thought it was real and that he would watch it (maybe he missed the tagline, he hasn't responded since I told him it was a joke). I pray Disney isn't listening/reading comments. The story of horror and sacrifice of brave Bothans I've had in my head for the last 4 decades, is always going to be way better than any dreary Disney film.

The third act of ROTJ is the pinnacle of directing multiple planes of action in a film IMO. You have three separate yet interwoven planes of action (Throne room, Space battle and Endor surface) and they all weave in and out wonderfully. The only part that comes close to me, at least in Star Wars, is the Battle of Scarif in Rogue One, and that's really only two planes of action.

I grew up watching the 97 Special Edition releases and while I can acknowledge the faults of those movies with all the tinkering the addition of the new ending music from John Williams coupled with the shots of the celebrations across the galaxy was a fantastic edition IMO.
I've never understood the hate for "Victory Celebration" since it's by the Star Wars music master John Williams. Like I could understand if JW had died and they got someone else to do music but it's by the man himself so what's not to love?!

I like to think the differences in the choreography is based on the time period in universe. With the flips and crazy fights in the prequels are from the height of the Jedi and everyone being trained if the 7 forms. Where in the OT it’s just raw emotion since Vader is the only one trained proper with a lightsaber.

    • @kevinw712
      @kevinw712 3 года назад

But also a major fundamental element was Lucas' strict insistence during making the original trilogy of each of the actors pretty much always handling their lightsaber with both hands. Hamill would beg him over and over again to let up and that having at least some of the time wielding it in one arm could really help open up the fights and have more grace. But Lucas was on about how these devices needed to be regarded within the universe, the idea they were too heavy to not grasp with both hands. But of course then eventually the logic of their rules started to stretch a bit.

Empire is the best Star Wars movie, BUT Return of The Jedi has my favorite Star Wars scene in it. I also think RoTJ is a much more fun movie than ANH. The scene where Luke goes bananas on Vader, unleashing his rage, with the awesome music gave me chills as a child and gives me chills now. The emotional weight and implications behind each lightsaber strike was monumental. Plus this scene leads into Palpatine unleashing his lightning and Vader saving the day. Those parts are just too damn good.

It's nowhere near as annoying because it doesn't have that stupid song with vocals at Jabba's Palace. no singing and I even like the music at the end too. The only thing I don't like about the original is that you don't get to see the other planets celebrating the fall of the Empire!

Yeah the word is that Lucas wanted the Ewoks to be Wookies, but a) they couldn't find enough people who could rival Peter Mayhew in height (dude was over 7 feet / 2 meters tall), b) the costumes would have been too expensive to make c) Chewie wouldn't have stood out as much, and d) going with the Ewoks sends a stronger message about nature vs technology and natives vs invaders. Wookies were said to be fierce, it wouldn't have seemed that impressive if they beat the Empire.

The whole thing surrounding Slave Leia and people taking issue with it is something I have always found a bit baseless. Jabba is a vile creature and so it makes complete sense that he would make her wear something demeaning. He isn't going to let her dress any other way. And the whole enslaved theme behind the costume is completely destroyed when she takes the very chain that is around her and uses it to strangle Jabba to death. That's a pretty badass and empowering moment for her character and for women in general I would argue. I can still see the argument that maybe it was done to just objectify Carrie Fisher a bit but I honestly think it fits in the movie and is a great moment for her character.

I agree soo much with this video but I have to say the fight with Obiwan an Anakin in ROTS was emotionally charged that shot you used with them spinning is actually a fencing move used to find an opening and its only used between opponents who know each others fighting style intimately. These two trained and spared against each other for decades! it was way more than look at these whirly twirly blades if you look Anakin's style is more aggressive hes pushing Obiwan back the whole time. Proving he's gotten more powerful in the short time since he last saw him, Obiwan realizing the only way to be Anakin is to play against his ego his pride. Super emotional. Just as emotional if not more than what we saw in RTOTJ in my opinion. Anyway great video guys I loved the banter I just stumbled onto this page and I'm glad I did.

For the Jabba sequence I can see your point. I saw all these in theaters in 1997, the special editions. Those were intense twists in a dark underworld I couldn't keep my eyes off of, while trying to hide behind my jacket. It was goofy but as a child it was edge of the seat intensity that seemed a whole movie in itself! Your favorite characters coming in disguise, the droids being GIVEN AWAY! Chewie got captured! And Lando?! Never should have trusted him! Why did they trust him? Then shit it's actually Leia!?!? Wha? She's saving Han!
Sure the cheese is thick when you're going back and watching it but remember how well that made you feel back with the gang, back in the danger zone and the new alien atmosphere that feels some how familiar. It's a great romp of adventure that pulls a childs excitement right out of their chest. And just perfectly gives the second half a sense of weight and magnitude with the three battles come to head, outside the deathstar and on the moon and the one in the throne room. It makes for such a dizzying journey that leaves a child breathless and high on fantasy. No amount of analysis can undermine that this whole movie seals a mythical series full of wonder with a real sense of adventurous excitement and fulfillment. Nothing can compare, no series has ever been able to finish this strong. Ever.

Han's increased silliness (great way to put it, btw) here in ROTJ, I think a certain degree of it works okay. Or at least I mean like it's a plausible enough attitude to at this point in the timeline be more just right on the surface for him. It's not as much a priority for him to quickly default to his defense mechanisms of the whole outlaw devil-may-care bravado. He and Leia are on the same page now with their feelings and he's developed maybe his single strongest legit bond he's ever had with anyone not covered head to toe with hair as he does with Luke. After several years he feels secure enough to allow himself to try and be more happy. He knows Luke and Leia are both here with him for the long haul.

Other than Leia in the metal bikini and Luke slaughtering Jabbas goons I agree. Ive always felt the same way for the first act of ROTJ. So much time spent in this madness lmao. I’m like common I wanna see the emperor and Vader

It’s weaker than episode 4 and 5 but the Vader , Luke, emperor scenes are some of the best in all of Star Wars

They used Ewoks because it’s easier to find children sized people than 7 foot tall people to fill costumes

Hey, not liking Palpatine in XI is fair, for sure... but he *did die* in Episode VI, he literally says as much in IX.

Clone Wars is as much canon to me as the original trilogy.

It was suppose to be Wookiee’s but it would cost too much to make a bunch of 7 foot costumes and to find 7 foot actors .
The Ewoks are much easier to find little people and kids .
That is why they are called Ewoks it is kinda pig Latin for Wookiee

Surprised there was no mention of the biggest sin the 90s editions committed: blatant Yub Nub erasure
