It seems that he is using jam sao to punch, with therefore doesn't need to shift to take over position. If you were to achieve this angle by using lets say, a traditional straight punch then you would need to shift as well.Making it two movements to hit or take over the person's bridge however less efficient and slower. If he further shifts with this punch then he is likely to further move your punch away therefore making you cross your hands to punch him with the second action. That's how I see it, anyone else got any ideas?
He's primarily talking about elbow power. (jaang dai lik) Don't backfist, don't hammer fist. Use the elbow to drive the punch straight forward. Keep the shoulder down so that the elbow is connected to the body, so the body drives the elbow which drives the punch. In the second part of the video, he does shift, but only just enough to take the angle. Jam sao IS a punch that got intercepted. Keep the elbow down. If you flare your elbow up, it becomes disconnected from your body. When you shift ever so slightly, you avoid his centerline of attack. Your own centerline cuts an angle to attack him. Your punch either gets a clear line of attack or it intercepts his punch and controls him. Open a door 45 degrees. Stand at the edge of the door and face the hinge. If you walk straight to the hinge, you will run into the edge of the door. If you shift slightly, you will see the hinge. As you walk closer to the hinge, the door will naturally swing out of your way. You do not need to push it sideways.
I practiced this punch and it feels like I’m driving with the shoulder, am I doing it wrong? When I do the vertical punch where I’m focused on the centerline I’m driving with the elbow Any help appreciated
Hard to give feedback in a forum like this, but I'll try. Relax your shoulder, keep your elbow low and drive with that, dont straighten the arm and "forget" about your forearm and hand.
This is a real treasure!
It might just be the only piece of footage anywhere that proves that there was a time when Wan Sifu didn't wear suspenders.
My sifu looks at me in frustrations when I forget my suppressing punches lol

its called practical wing chun. He is relying on an angle, 135 degrees. That's what gives him the power and strength. This guys is a genius.

Ok, thank you Sir. I’ll try that.
When I punch I think of it as an elbow strike with the forearm and fist as an extension of it. Usually this helps to relax my shoulders
