If you are like me, you like sad song.
There's nothing bad with Major keys, happy songs, they can lift your mood, but something about sad song touches me like nothing else can.
And when I think of chord progressions to achieve that effect, there's just one chord progression that comes to mind.
It's actually dead simple!
Just a root chord, followed by a bVI chord in a minor scale.
Example: Em - C
So simple, but yet so effective.
Here's how I use these chords to create this touching kind of mood.

A song that I think is beautifully sad yet satisfying is “I Go Down” by “Leaves”
Yup defenetly
Absolutely!!!
The Em and C sounds like the walking theme from BULLY
1:52
Yeah it does. Maybe the musician knew this.
7:30 is so beautiful
true it's so cool because it's in harmonic minor scale, it's like the giga chad song which goes C-A-E
STOP GIVING AWAY MY SECRETS.for real thought I've been writing music like this forever and it cool to see I'm not the only one who's picked up in this
I usually find the easiest way to create a satisfying sadness vibe is to let my wife know I am planning to do something fun and have to shirk my household chores for awhile.
😅😂
Useless male
😂😂😂😂👌🏻
Major 7 chords are the saddest in my opinion, especially when after a third-position chord. Minor chords are usually just sombre to me.
@W 9797 a third position chord is the 3rd chord in the scale you are playing in. for example if you are playing in E minor, the scale being E F# G A B C D.... G would be your third position chord. E would be the first, F# would be your 2nd and so on :) I realize i'm replying a month later but just in case you haven't figured it out.
For people who want to know more about this technic : I think this is called Chromatic Mediants. It's a technique used a lot in movie scores and videogame composition. Let me explain;
the mediant of a note, is its third. nothing too hard, right ?
for instance, in C major, the mediant, is E . in E major, the mediant is Ab . in A minor, the mediant , is C
To some extent, you can also have a mediant BELOW the root note, it's a submediant, or the sixth of the tonic. Thus :
in C major, A is the submediant. in E major, the submediant is C# , and in A minor, it's F.
These are the DIATONIC mediants, as they are in the scale of the root note.
But, what about a chromatic mediant ?
A note's chromatic mediant, is one of the notes that are :
a major or minor third above OR below , and
a major or minor sixth above or below that note.
For instance, the chromatic mediants of C are Eb (minor third) , E (major third) , Ab (minor sixth) , and A (major sixth). So what can you do with this info ? Make up a chord progression based on chromatic mediants.
Let's take this concept one step further, with chords. Let's start with a C major chord.
A chord progression based on chromatic mediants , is about using the first root's chromatic mediants as the next chord roots. The chords can be either major or minor , because diatonic scales don't really have a lot of importance here.
Thus, the progression C major - Ab major is totally possible, it's a I - bVI progression . You can even go further , by doing something like C major - Ab major - E minor - A minor, which would be a I-bVI-iii-vi.
We differentiate 2 kinds of chromatic mediants chords :
- Simple chromatic mediant chords, where only 1 tone is changed compared to the root chord (ex : in the progression C major-E minor , C major (C E G) and E minor (E G B) share 2 common tones, thus E is a simple chromatic mediant of C)
- Double chromatic mediant chords, where 2 or more tones are changed (ex : in the progression C major -Ab major , where only the C is shared between C major (C E G) and Ab major (Ab C Eb). Thus, Ab is a double chromatic mediant of C)
Just thought it could help someone :) It's very fun to play with such a technique, because it creates a lot of borrowed chords very fast
Awesome, thorough explanation! I also made my own lesson on it a few months ago, trying all combinations for ambient guitar: ruclips.net/video/FdWbjswQa6I/видео.html
@@AntoineMichaudGuitar Oh , didn't know about that video , I definitely subscribed, awesome channel :) being myself a videogame composer (mostly ambient music) for small projects, I can definitely relate when you talk about add11 , chromatic mediants and all that ! A technic I use a lot is about rootless 9ths , however I'm more of a piano guy and I'm not that great at guitar so I don't even know if it's convenient to play such chords on guitar
Yup. A nice song that uses this technique is “be natural” by Manic street preachers
Isaac Ruchalski double chromatic mediants have no common notes. Your first example is actually diatonic mediants/sub-mediants, the second chromatic mediants (1 common note)
I drunk piss b4
this just made me want to pick up my guitar and finally start learning and practicing
Do it!
Love this! I’m glad I’m not alone in trying to identify what it is that’s so satisfying about sad songs. I can’t explain it but you definitely seem to get it.
Antoine, I love your teaching approach! Very easy and simple yet very effective. Qualities of a fantastic teacher in any subject your students would understand. Tnx.
Just what I needed to energize the musical musical muse. Wonderful info Antoine. Can't put my guitar down !

Thank you so much again. Going to try some loops later on this.
WOW! Such ambient bliss. Simple, but so beautiful. I only need one teacher to learn all I need and it is YOU and to think this is just a taste of what you teach. People, I highly recommend getting one of the expanded classes like the masterclass as It has boosted my playing tremendously!
Really appreciate you, my friend! Thanks for the kind words :-)
Iam ussually a well mood guy but for some reason i kinda tend to always go more easilly to a sad side on music when iam playing.
So this video is for me.

Super nice solo with these chords, Antoine !

Antoine, have you heard of Howard Jones,an 80s artist, using synths/keyboards,vocals,real heart in his music ,ambient warmth, with thoughtful lyrics, not so well known, but underrated ,beautiful.
Why so many commas
Can u make your own version of tale of the tongues you'd love doing it the vibe somewhat matches this but more evolved and defined or just star shopping

Try listening to buckethead specially the album (colma) and the album (electric tears)
One thing I can't ever tell with these types of videos is what chords they have there fingers on and how they stretch there hands to be able to play
this is so hard....🥺
06:25 sounds like the song Echo by Pink Floyd
i get you
Sounds like electric tears album from buckethead
Please make videos on these songs with no talking or teaching. I think some of us, including me, would just like to listen to you play and relax.
I have a whole playlist of relaxing original guitar songs. 125 songs as of now. Enjoy!: ruclips.net/video/wLN7-h83DaA/видео.html
Please make an afrotimefolk instrumental on the g natural and g- please
i need some loops!!!
6:00 …tell me what you want but that sounds like a crazy fortnite lobby music from the good old days
Dude, I also heard that :D
I’m on the search for how to manipulate emotion with sound. What should I search to learn what chords govern what emotions?
I don’t know music theory, but I’ll get to that soon. I just want to know where I can learn what chords make people happy, sad, etc.
Minor chords are often sad
Major chords are often happy
IMHO, it’s not just which chords, but which chords in relation to the adjacent chord. This guy has lots of videos on this. Simple theory stuff will be helpful, as in all chords in whatever key, then you have a quick lexicon on how to identify what you’re talking about, thinking about ;). You’ll get it!
Hi, what effects are you using ?
HOW TO CREAT THIS KIND OF PATCH IN MY ZOOM GX100 PLZ
Reminds me of Luca playing a song for Marinette.
Lmao me too
11:00
Could you give me a beat tempo for creating this type of effect on an electronic song please?
i just love learning from people with the same accent as me
Kind of like "Nothing Else Matters"!!...
PIcardy? Is that the Jean Luc chord? :)
7:52
SADisfying sad chords 😏
E to C is a chromatic mediant territory, which is a musical realm of its own.
Hi Antoine, is it allowed to download your track
what are the cords for the first improvising?
Better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting,
Type of Melody that is use to do lofi
Gives steven wilson vibes for some reason
Steven Wilson is one of my biggest influences, so that's no coincidence!
Chromatic mediant C-E
🚩I sure wish when you do a video, please throw a Download of the chords, Scales ECT. Don't always have Guitar, or way to write. I've watched so many videos from, Dr office, Parking lot, waiting for someone. Would be great to download, then when I get home, print out,, go back to video, and Just maybe Create A Song! Just a thought!
Something in the way
Are you using an amp, if yes what amp is it?
You sound like a New Age Guru: "G Sharp, G Natural " otherwise, excellent video as usual
9:54
