I melt the eyes of all plushies/amigurumis regardless of size as I am a paranoid mom of a toddler and pet owner, but I never thought of the felt square as added protection. Thank you so much for the tip!

Melting the plastic can make it more brittle and snap easier :(

I do them with a hair iron and a piece of bee wax paper (the one you put when you cook and do cakes) and that just works perfect for me (im afraid of fire and the eyes melting)

this came at the best time, im in process of knitting stuffed animals as christmas presents- and wasnt sure how to make the eyes extra secure and thought maybe a piece of material inbetween but felts a perfect idea!! as well as the melting part- never would have thought of that!

  • @Itsatotalmystery
    @Itsatotalmystery Месяц назад +17

You should never ever burn them. That weakens the plastic. Those backs are not the appropriate backs for that size eye either. The backs should be the same circumference as the eye part, and as long as you are using the correct size eyes with your yarn, they should not come out. You can use glue for extra security but melting them defeats the purpose.

Also i don't know what these eyes are made of, but plastic that is not meant to be melted could release harmful fumes into the air when melted like that which could cause serious harm long term

This is such great advice for the chunky and jumbo yarns!
I put mine in with a little bit of hot glue as I usually work with medium/worsted, so that I know they're in the best place after making the item

If it falls out, just glue it
You can use a felt that can help but you shouldn't burn plastic either way, melting weakens the plastic and fire is obviously a serious hazard

  • @FujishimaAkiko

Those are the smallest backs I've ever seen for 24mm safety eyes. The backs that come with the ones I buy are nearly the same width as the eyes themselves. But, with something that huge, I use larger eyes, like 40 to 60mm safety eyes. I also do the lighter "trick" and melt and flatten the safety eye stem. I also use a safety eye tool to really press that back on, it never goes on as strongly as it can when you just do it with your hands. If it goes on easy with bare hands, it's not a true "safety eye".

If they aren't secure enough on their own just glue them, you don't want to inhale burning plastic fumes and it's safer than any tools hot enough to melt the plastic.
And if you really want to melt plastic that isn't supposed to be melted do it in a well ventilated area like outside, and you should probably wear a mask. And of course be careful with hot objects.

I feel like you and the author of the article never watched superNanny. I watched probably every episode and the spinoffs. Jo always tells the parents their child is acting up because they (the parent) aren't doing what they should be. (Unless there is some other issue then medications and special techniques are to both be used).
This includes discipline rules boundries. Or attention affection. Independance trust responsibilities. And fun and quality time with emphasis on learning and exploring.
It being filmed is a burden and several older children have said they dont like being filmed AND they think its all for show. But Jo is very realistic and just tells them (paparphrasing) theres no such thing as a free lunch for the family to receive her help the process willl be filmed. Tbh there is a lot cut out especially on the newest episodes. And by the end of the show the children seem to like Jo.
Who knows if the parents can stay on the wagon, can adapt to their child's ever changing needs. But the show isnt for that. They are given some techniques and some guidance over a few days and then a follow up visit. 🤷‍♀️
And anyone whos interacted with a toddler knows they dont feel that much shame. They kick off in public all the time they dont care about that camera man. the older kids will but they are old enough to be spoken to and have the situation explained to them. And the explanation basically boils down to "Mom and dad need help this is how they are going about it if you dont like it to bad the decision has been made and yes you are expected to participate. Thats life. And why do parents get to make that decision? Because the expectation is they ( the parent) have the best intrest of the child in mind they know what the child needs and they are to fulfill the needs and some wants of the child.
And before you start crying even as adults we have people with power over us and responsibilities to us. Just like a parent has power over and responsibilities to their child BY LAW.
Thats just life get over it.
The purpose of the show isnt to humiliate the children but get so fucking forreal. There are many times in life where we face humiliation and embarrassment Even in the public eye. That in itself isnt abusive being uncomfortable isnt abuse.
