It's so interesting to me, that Emily Henry's characters are unlikeable to you. They never seemed unlikable to me, I didn't even get the feeling that she was trying to paint them out to be particularly flawed. They just seem very real and relatable to me, which is something I often times miss in other romance books. Haven't read funny story yet, so excited to get to it now!

I agree! I also feel like her books are more literary fiction with a subplot of romance but people assume they're more rom-com. If you don't relate to her characters in some way you won't care for the books.

same, especially bc as someone who doesn't often relate to characters, i saw so much of myself in harriet, including the flaws that probably made happy place less enjoyable to people lol. i think her characters just feel very fleshed out to me and that includes imperfections that we all have, so it's interesting to hear they come across as unlikeable to some bc i didn't get that either

Please know that reading 5 books per month is a great accomplishment, so is even reading 1 book! I truly think that as long as you are reading for enjoyability sake than the number of books you read is a minor detail (:

in my opinion, the next few books in the gild series get so heavy on the trauma/recovering from terrible things that Auren goes through, so much so that I had to DNF either book 3 or 4 - I can't remember which, I just remember being like I literally can't continue reading this... which is sad because I enjoyed the first two books!!

I think it is is worth reading up to book 3. Books 4 & 5 are a little trauma porn.... Which I am not going to lie, is kind of why I am into the book in the first place. It feels like pushing on a bruise. But book 3 ends pretty triumphantly and is a good enough spot to end reading on **SPOILER** book 3 ends with her fainting because Mrs. Kennedy loves a cliff hanger. Just imagine your own epilogue where they fly away and she recovers and I think you are good to end there.

Plated Prisoner series is so slow burn and needs to be read in full to appreciate it completely. It only gets better. There is A LOT of trauma but it plays a very important role. I think you should keep going.

I have read all of the plated prisoner series and always trying to get my friends to read it although it is a really hard sell.
I think Gleam is worth it though. I would say that the 4th and 5th books aren't great and I wouldn't have bothered with them at all if it wasn't for Raven Kennedy's constant use of cliff hangers. All that said I have been chasing the high that Gleam gave me for the past 6 months! It goes a little Lancealot and Guinevere which I adore!

im so glad you enjoyed funny story! im definitely on the outlier side bcz i didn't like it as much at all. miles just felt like a slightly different version of gus, even their traumas felt a little bit similar to me. & like you said, the middle of the book rlly took me out of the story. i LOVED miles & daphne but i just felt like as a romance book, it could have been more. i just didn't feel like justice was done for their story idk if i make sense.
also for the raven kennedy series, i pretty much read the first two as well & started the third. i can't remember if i finished it but i remember loving them but it's rlllllly slow. it's supposed to be romantasy but imo it's taking way too long to set that up & it gets kinda exhausting. it was still very interesting though & i might continue it eventually but not rn when i have so much more out there to read 😭
im rlly excited to the videos you have planned & i hope you heal from all this at your own pace & know that we are thinking of you & love you 🥰

As a wheelchair user myself, thank you so much for pointing out the ableism in this book and now I know definitely to avoid it. I really appreciate when non wheelchair users point out the ableism in books because let's face it, the saviorism in a lot of books is getting so old!

If you're trying to find a Mary Balogh book you might like, I'd recommend A Matter of Class. It's an older book from 2010. Not very long, but interesting.
