VP Shunting is a surgical procedure to treat a brain condition called hydrocephalus. In this procedure a device known as VP shunt (ventriculoperitoneal shunt) is used to remove excess fluid from a person's brain. The excess fluid can increase brain pressure and this shunt drains excess fluid reducing it to a safe level.

I last had my VP shunt replaced in July 2010..I had my shunt adjusted in office by my neurosurgeon in March 2023. Thank goodness I no longer have massive headaches at the moment. My record is 16 years without surgery.
So what type of shunt so you have? I guess adjustable valve right? You didn't face any blockage of shunt? Do you know of any way to prevent shunt blockage ? What type of shunt is best?
@@elafzal5866 shunt choice is up to the individual surgeon and there is not one size or choice fits all in this case. And so far, I have yet to experience a blockage with this one. And there's no way to prevent a blockage or anything. It's a man-made device that will break down every time. Just be diligent in monitoring yourself if you're the one with hydrocephalus, or your loved one with it. Look for signs like inability to stay awake, vomiting and nausea dizziness and severe confusion, as well as worsening headaches.
@@AmandaAllen-c2q why do you replace your shunt? My friend has vp shunt about 30 years without problem. My neurosurgeon told me it is no need.

@@jencentino4234 why? My surgerist told that it is possible. I had schwanom and had to impleme t vp shant. But now, tumor is maximum reduced and doctor told me that vp shant is no need anymore and they can remove it.

Dear sir, my father has undergone VP Shunt Surgery. The Codman Hakim Shunt was implanted and the pressure was set at 200. Now after almost 5/6 months my father is feeling some complications like dis balanced walking, memory issue, and depression. As per the latest CT Scan it is found that the shunt is over-draining CSF. As the pressure is on the highest level i.e. 200, Doctor is telling that there is no way to control over drainage. In this connection, you are requested to please suggest if any remedy is available to stop over draining.
Please also explain ill effects after shunting surgery .

I had two lp shunts for a little over 20 years each. In 2022 the last one failed at both ends. The second shunt broke from my spine and the other end rubbed a hole in my intestines. The first shunt was left in when the second shunt went in. The first shunt broke from the spine. When I went in for high spinal pressure headache from hell, after scans, they saw it broke from the spine and leaking spinal fluid into my back(obvious lump). The other end rubbed a hole leaking fluid there. I have a 14” scar starting between boobs down past belly button. 3 weeks later, I am back in because of pressure and loosing my eyesight. I was in for 3 weeks with external shunt on top of my head. 50 hours after inserting, excess spinal fluid drained off about 3 liter of spinal fluid. I don’t remember any of that stay. I have very little memories of about 2 years ago. I had to be told of what I wrote earlier. It drains from the top of my head to drain into the upper right heart ventricle. Sometimes if it’s a big drain, I feel a cramp on that side of my heart. I’m 61 years old. I had my first shunt when I was 20. I had a monthly spinal tap for a year before the shunt.
My grandmother is diagnosed with Age related hydrocephalus and atrophy.
Her age is about 80 years . She is being receiving acetazolamide and a brain nutrient for the last week but showing no recovery signs. The doctors has advised not take her to VP shunt procedure. As she is aged. Can any one suggest any efficient treatment.

Can you please tell me how do u come to know about shunt's pressure? My father in law had suffered brain hemorrhage and then after he had undergone codman hakim programmable VP shunt. He often complains about pain and heavyness in his abdomen area.
