After watching your videos for a couple years now i feel confident enough to take on a non runner. Your attention to little details is something you don't from most channels.
Had a bad habit of kicking things 97 times before realizing something’s not right, if it doesn’t fire up in 5-10 kicks, something’s not right. I recently bought a 87 LT 230S, it hadn’t ran in over 15 years, after going through it (carb clean, oil change, valve check) it started on the 2nd kick.
No oil, but gas in the oil tank. And ran it that way! I thought the crank bearings sounded pretty bad when you were kicking it. One thing I know, is that if it’s worth fixing, you’re the guy that can make it happen! Good luck Joe!
Man, I'm in my 40's and grew up doing exactly what you are doing. To cold right now to work on my stuff so instead I find myself watching your content. Keep up the fun videos.
The clear ring around the top of the piston is from a coolant leak. Don't sink money into just a new piston and rings. It needs a complete rebuild, especially with metal shavings.
And that oil ring didn't just vanish. It was taken out or its in the bottom end. And what broke the chain guide/tensioner? Lots of mysteries in this bike. Think the guy he got it off is lying his ass off. He knew how bad it is. He knocked $800 off it without much pressure. Never did find out why a bike with stuck/missing rings, sloppy piston was so hard to kick over. Even if he was weak he was standing on the kick starter. My best estimate he weighs say 140 - 160ish? 😊
That kid is from Wisconsin I'm in Indiana. I was going to buy it he was going to bring it over a few days ago. But I was having second thoughts so I bought something else 😃
Any shavings would have me freaking out. The source must be found. I didn't really see anything looked ground up. I guess it could be rings but first I think he should have checked material. Aluminum or steel. Run a magnet in it. See if it sticks. That's a lot of metal to have pumping around the oil system. The filter only grabs so much . Does it have a bypass? I know a car filter does but I have no clue if bikes and quads do. It's been a long time since I owned one and don't remember. There's a chance whoever rebuilt it last time left all that shit in it I guess. Replaced the cams because they got chewed up. I bet the oil they drained out had a handful of glitter in it.
When I was in my late teens, I had a 200x 3 wheeler and 2 of my buddies had the same bikes. One morning we were riding a trail up to four peaks, and my buddy's bike stopped running about a mile from the trucks. When we checked the bike out there was no/very little oil in the motor. We went back to the truck and got a quart to see if we could limp it back to the trucks. Put it in the motor and she fired right up without issue. My buddy never had any issues with that motor and he still has it. Those Japanese bike motors are pretty tough machines. Thanks for the video. Congrats on you and your channel's success.
Your videos really are an inspiration I just recently got a yz450f and just watching your videos I’ve learned so much to diagnose and fix different things thanks man
Ole' Vin is thinking dad got the short end on that purchase I'm betting. The Engine, just trying to kick over. It sounds like the internals are coming apart.
It sounds like there was no love for this bike in any way... ridden hard and put away wet, super rough. Ugh. Here comes Mr. Wisconsin 2Vintage to share some love and save the day!
Think that it could be parts of the broken chain tensioner, which are stuck at the bottom end. But when cleaning it out, prepping it for new parts, the questions will be answerd.
Awesome video man can't wait to hear it run hopefully soon. I was getting ready for spring two days ago and now I'm in a blizzard for the most part here in northern Minnesota.
I was thinking.... did you ask the owner if he attempted to "Trade it in??" Fill it with oil and take it to a dealer as a trade in. Initially a $500 trade value, with NO oil, a $300 trade in to $0.... a $300 bike. You've taken a lot of chances in the past. Win some lose some. Let's see what you find! Always great entertainment. Thanks for posting.
I couldn't tell you how many people came to our dealership looking to sell their junk. We would pay a couple hundred, with a clear mso, just for the first frame. Thats about it.
Super nice bike just wish it was taken care of !! If you ever decide to sell it when it is all done I’m interested in it… looks like a fun bike and I wanna get into ice racing and i think this one would do it or track racing even! Can’t wait tell it’s done and posted cause I’ll be messaging ❤ keep up the work man hope to be like you one day !
Really enjoyed that, had me trying to figure it out in front of you. I was very interested. This RUclips is just fantastic resource if you want to learn all sorts of things. Great tutorial for someone like me who doesn’t have your experience.
Did you forget to check the oil level before buying it? Do you normally check it? I used to flip bikes and ATVs as a side gig and I had a checklist I took to every purchase that included things to check so I wouldn't forget anything.
Love your content man, that bike has had some work done for sure. I have a 2001 yz250f I rebuilt the top end, all new valves cause the center intake valve was so worn it was sharp as a razor blade. 01 don't come stock with hot start lever on the bars it's on the carb as well. The lever is supposed to be compression release. They don't have a decompression exhaust cam. That hole in the cylinder is spark plug hole drain so it doesn't set in water. If you get the bike at compression stroke when kick starting then push down the kick starter one notch and let it come back up, then give it a good kick it should start, that is about the only way to get these bikes fired up lol they are a booger. I do believe that it has a big bore kit cause stock bore is like 78 or 79 mm. You're my hero, though, you do awesome work.
Love the content bro, just found your channel, but i cant get enough. Imo this video showcases the quality of a yamaha machine. They ran it with out oil and it didnt completely sieze. I have with enough parts you could bring it back to life
Your patience is amazing. I would have already tossed that thing over bridge after I lit it on fire. Then drove my truck through the dude's living room.
I think the piston is touching the head at tdc. The lack of carbon on the edge of the piston crown, the same on the underside of the head, and the difficulty kicking it over all adds up.
I was thinking this also, mainly because of how hard it was to kick over. The reason I stopped thinking that was because if it had interference, the valves would’ve been bent, as he kicked it over about 800 times and the previous owner allegedly bump started it (itself, a doubtful proposition.) Didn’t sound like it was leaking through the valves during the leakdown test, the TDC mark appeared to actually close both sets of valves (so it’s not off-time), and the valve clearance was set. It’s possible still, but I’m not sure it’s likely.
Wow shoulda took vin to check this one out! He’d of known right away lol I just purchased my second 250 thanks to your videos. I think I got a remarkable deal 2010 for 1100, just needs carb work and a oil breather installed.
Update on my warrior. Has a top end tick. I adjusted the valves but didn't change anything. Thinking it's the timing chain. But I just replaced the clutch and she rips now!
Yea, when I adjusted the valves, they were all extremely tight. Like I couldn't fit a .03 gauge in the intake valves. They were tight lol but it picked up power after the adjustment! Also rebuilt the carb. There wasn't any accelerator pump return springs
Definitely bight the billet and pick yourself up a 1/4” and 3/8” electric ratchet like the Milwaukee, I held off for the longest time but the day I put one in my hands I have never looked back. By far one of the biggest tool upgrades I have ever done.
Great channel, one of my absolute favourites. I'm so like oh love anything mechanical and to fix mechanical machinery. Your dog is beautiful, I'm also a doggie fan,I have two Lhasa apso's, very cute and hairy. I noticed your little man rubbing his head on the floor,it's usually because of uncomfortable/itchy ears. Hairy dogs suffer with getting dirty inner ears, usually just a waxy build up often smelly, you usually see if you have a good look and check it's definitely worth it,as it can turn into nasty painful infected ears, they're very delicate dogs ears, worth looking at just incase. Keep up the great content. 🐕👍
Definitely lucked out on that one Joe atleast the cylinder is okay & the rod bearing a bike completely dry with no oil is insane but a new piston rings gasket kit & new tentionar guide & possible a stock carburettor unless your happy that the one with it will do the job & Definitely check out the valves & seals make sure there good with a good clean & touch up with paint you'll still end up with a decent bike for the price good to see top mechanic vinny looking over it have a smashing Weekend mate take care bud #2Vintage 👊 💨
46:29 if that engine's been rebuilt I wonder if somebody took the oil ring and split it apart so they can get it in a piston. But I ain't never seen no effed up like this. The second it was extremely hard to kick over I would have walked away
Ive seen it lots. Even pulled the stick after a hard ride. The dipstick was glowing red. I put 1.8 litres and it ran like a charm. But you could tell i lost about 50% power. But rode her for another season and traded it for a 67 valiant.
If you look at the head you can see the elder ring on the head is clean also that's where the piston has been hitting it and if you look at the top of the piston you can see the circles inside of the valves cut oats and you can see at some point in time the valves have made contact with
Wow!! First time I've seen Joe get upset on a diagnosis!😂 lolDon't give it gas it has a accelerator pump! Give it a shot of either but don't twist the throttle! My brother had one of those 426yfz's, he let me borrow it for a season, took me a week to get it started.. No gas, full choke and it would start!
Usually the seller will have title in hand unless the dirt bike was purchased with money from a bank loan, then the bank will have the title instead of the seller.
It's a wet sump system, I own an 03 yz450f and it's the same. You only get a reading on the frame after the bikes been running for likr 2 minutes so it can pump the oil up there. They only take 1.2 quarts w/filter change also
Also you added too much oil now without draining the old out of the bottom of the case. Oil isn't stored in the frame until running, and only when running
Id pull motor and start from there, probably split cases etc Make sure gears are not toast. Valves and all. Been run without oil, may be some damaged gears etc. Great job saving that poor busted beast!
Vinnie🤘 Joe,always remember. Chances are there always hiding something from you. Who cares what he stands to loose. That's not your problem. I understand your feelings, but business is business. Great videos!!
They probably didn’t put the middle oil ring in because they couldn’t get it to go. It’s probably the cylinder that’s wore out not piston. Need to take cover off and make sure the piece of guide that broke off didn’t mess anything up that had to be the clanking noise
Not sure about the 250’s from that year, but the 426’s from that year have a decompression lever to kick start it. You have to get the kickstarter at tdc, pull the decomp lever, only push the kickstarter down one click, let go of the decomp lever and bring the kickstarter back to tdc, then give it a full kick and it should start. Not sure if that’s the issue for why he could only bump start it
That lever that you pull at 9:40 I believe is the decompression lever not the hot start! The hot start on that year should be by the petcock. Hopefully that helps the kickstart issue
Ive seen a few of these come in like that. Always ends up being major pile of crap and tons of work to fix. Actually had one come in, the pistin had gole in top so owner pulled head and tug welded god thing you got it, saved it from salvage, dont go long without lube. Guy was frickin idiot. That'll be a nice bike when your done with it. Got faith in ya.
I bought a 2001 WR 250f for 500 dollars and it had no olil when I got it and water pump, top end, crank, stator, and needed front caliper rebuilt, previous owner had it all done wrong and a ton of other stuff but it is clean but right now its a work in progress
Mate of mine bought a bike a while ago and told him everything was completely done professionally. Looked clean. Bike blew up 2 days later pulled the engine completely apart and the inside looked like it was beaten with a hammer and vice marks all over it. Took the parts to the guy and he said he did the rebuild and he’s sorry. But he was being a fuck wit too him. Grabbed the seller by the collar and asked why he shouldn’t beat his head in with the cylinder for lying and being an asshole. Seller apologised and gave him a rebuild kit he had there for his other bike for lying
You said you wish Vinnie could talk there is a couple that a husky and they have some programmed buttons that when pressed says words and the husky uses the bottoms to say what it wants ect
I feel pretty certain previous owner never had it started. And luckily so, because if he had, the bottom end would be destroyed. Or as someone else mentioned, maybe he actually drained the oil as to hide all the oil leaks. Im very surprised that Joe didnt think to check the oil with all his buying experience. But, theres no doubt Joe will get it figured out and running again.
I have 03 yz450f those oil lines and tank in the frame spray em out wit carb cleaner or break clean and flush the tank the lines and spray out the lines with air. I had to after the motor locked up destroying my trans left side case and needed a new cylinder and I bought all the parts and rebuilt it she runs amazing but them FCR carbs are a pain in the ass highly recommend the hot start delete and a lot of the community considers my 450 to be a dinosaur for being a 03 . I love your content and can’t wait to see this bike run .
On the 2001 and 2002 yz250fs that lever on the bars isn’t the hot start it’s the decompression lever in 03 the went to an auto decomp cam but on the 01 and 02’s if you don’t bump it past top dead center with that decomp lever it’s about impossible to kick it over
With all the experience you have with bikes, my guess is that you knew straight away that the engine was buggered. But you are too polite to come out and say it. That bike must be so relieved to have been rescued off the muppets that had it. You will save it for sure.
This is just sad, obvious abuse and lack of care. These older Yamahas can be made pretty sweet and in my opinion hold value over the other competitors. Anyone who treats a 4 stroke like this will learn the hard way. I wondered if he drained the oil before selling it but still not good. I'd say this was worth 1k. Either way nice work, nice vid. Keep it up
Maybe they forgot center oiler ring, it happens, seen it a few times, owner always says it ran fine. I just grin and giggle a bit then tell them the cost of repair which if done right could be avoided.
Please🙏🏽 try using a coin, washer etc. of the appropriate size(diameter and thickness) to remove these inspection covers. A screwdriver and hammer should be used only as your last resort, not a routine method. If you do try, THANK YOU.❤
Using the wrong engine oil can really mess up things . Judging by the slack in the chain makes me think it has the wrong oil in it. I know this because I used auto oil in a bike and it caused the chain loosen up a lot. I put the right oil in it and completely changed the clutch operation no slippage .
Why is the compression test still so high with a decompression mechanism? Compression on my 08 crf250r with the decompression mechanism says it should be only 57psi.
I would say the clear ring around the top of the piston and on the head isn't from coolant leaking if it was it would be the whole of the piston and the head would be clean and with how the rings on the piston are I would have said most likely the piston was hitting the head (some how not the valves) and with it being hard to kick over it match up with that and with the piston rings being in the bad shape they are it isn't building that much PSI in the chamber so I would belt and brace get new cylinder, head, piston and rings and also a rod as the rod maybe a bit too long, or get a thicker gaskets to push the head away from the piston
Internal combustion engines are amazing .. even with all the problems this bike had, the kid was still able to get it to run and move under its own power.. it may not have run well, but it still ran lol.. It never ceases to amaze me that people will buy a bike, not check any of the fluids, and just ride it like a bicycle with no maintenance done , ever lol.. the moment joe undid the drain bolt, he was probably thinking “I’m in danger” (be honest, you pictured Ralph from the Simpson😂👍) and “uh oh, I fucked up” lol
Wish the video was complete, ie test, strip down and rebuild with start. I feel the rebuild is more important than all the pre-buying checks that you go through. I am sure a couple of minutes summary of the checks would suffice. Good video, other than not seeing the successful outcome.
Those models have to be running for a few minutes for the oil to get up unto the frame where the dipstick is. So if you check the oil level when the bike hasn’t been ran in a while you may think it has no oil but it might have the correct amount
Hey vintage i have a 2001 cr 125 and when i have all the shift components off except for the shift drum and the shifter bolt and I have a socket and ratchet on the shifter bolt I can shift thru all of the gears. But when its all together I cant shift thru any when i try to shift up its like there isnt a gear there but when i shift down it moves a 1/4 inch and stops. So i tore it apart and found out the shifter drums springs didnt have a plunger that sits on the pawls on either of the 2 springs and i was wondering what your opinion was on it do you think that is the reason for it not shifting when all together. please reply i'm worried its my trans thanks!!
Fot that case center plug the big flat head one i always used a bigger washer and a bar otmr big screwdriver to put the the washer hole to brake it loose
Those 01 yz250fs have a decompression lever that you gotta hold until it's on TDC and then you can kick it. Otherwise the compression is too much to kick it over
Be careful I had an 02 yz250f that would get stuck when kicking it just like that, and the crank ended up being bad, had no up and down play but when rotating it would get stuck randomly. So make sure to check that👍🏼
After watching your videos for a couple years now i feel confident enough to take on a non runner. Your attention to little details is something you don't from most channels.
@Jake Demuss At least he said: "It's really weird, it's all clear around the piston here."
Bad habit of gassing it as kick
Had a bad habit of kicking things 97 times before realizing something’s not right, if it doesn’t fire up in 5-10 kicks, something’s not right. I recently bought a 87 LT 230S, it hadn’t ran in over 15 years, after going through it (carb clean, oil change, valve check) it started on the 2nd kick.

Hence why he was selling it for 1200$ lol
Knew*** not new
Yeah he definitely knew more than he was saying.. Also kept saying stuff but seemed like he didn’t mean to or want to say that and played dumbb..
@@Kevin2023-like when he said the rear shock was leaking coolant 😂
No oil, but gas in the oil tank. And ran it that way! I thought the crank bearings sounded pretty bad when you were kicking it. One thing I know, is that if it’s worth fixing, you’re the guy that can make it happen! Good luck Joe!
"I don't really like 4 strokes" is code word for I can't work on them worth a sh!t 🤣
Wracking the throttle with an accelerator pump on every kick I’m sure didn’t flood it out at all either 😂😂😂
Fr
@@ni_wink84yes I had the same thought
Well they do suck
Man, your videos are a blast to watch for someone who is learning how to work on their bike, keep these coming!
Man, I'm in my 40's and grew up doing exactly what you are doing. To cold right now to work on my stuff so instead I find myself watching your content. Keep up the fun videos.
same here. I live in a townhouse, so going out back to work on the bikes in the cold is brutal. summer can't get here quick enough!
I’m 18 and just stayed getting into bikes a few months ago and I love learning from videos like this
Famous last words from the seller: "I don't really want to work on it" lol

Glitter bomb bike😉😊
That clean area around the perimeter of the piston could also from the piston coming in contact with the head. Could be wrong thickness head gasket.
Another way of saying it would be "I bought a $1200 bike with no oil.." 😅😂
Take the lower cases apart, reseal, send out cylinder bore to next size, lap valves and should be solid motor.

Raced one of these of year's. Great bike and very reliable. Easy to fix but the parts are expensive. Worth fixing. Check the year on the headstock.
Im surprised at his lack of knowledge of things like that when he works on this stuff a lot.
This young man is a stud!! Great channel and super educational. Thanks for all of the awesome content!!

Quick question, do you get the title / bill of sale / or straight cash when you purchase bikes ?
Usually the seller will have title in hand unless the dirt bike was purchased with money from a bank loan, then the bank will have the title instead of the seller.
I can see why it was bump started, have fun with that bud. It'll be easy peasy fix...some expensive parts coming out... nice
51 min for us but for you must be 2 days. I love your perseverance, 💪
Just knowing someone had that bottom end apart would make me want to go thru the whole engine/clutch/transmission.
watching all these videos and getting confidence to work more on my bike.
Id pull motor and start from there, probably split cases etc
Make sure gears are not toast. Valves and all. Been run without oil, may be some damaged gears etc. Great job saving that poor busted beast!
I'm pretty new to your channel. I like it and really appreciate that you disclose the purchase price
Vinnie🤘 Joe,always remember. Chances are there always hiding something from you. Who cares what he stands to loose. That's not your problem. I understand your feelings, but business is business. Great videos!!
*Lose, not loose.
Are you ever tempted to go back to the seller and asking "What the F*ck dude?"?
Mate of mine bought a bike a while ago and told him everything was completely done professionally. Looked clean. Bike blew up 2 days later pulled the engine completely apart and the inside looked like it was beaten with a hammer and vice marks all over it. Took the parts to the guy and he said he did the rebuild and he’s sorry.
But he was being a fuck wit too him. Grabbed the seller by the collar and asked why he shouldn’t beat his head in with the cylinder for lying and being an asshole. Seller apologised and gave him a rebuild kit he had there for his other bike for lying
thats why you dont sell bikes from your house, gotta tell them your name is Frank and meet them at Subway if you are selling a time bomb.
He took the oil cap off...didnt say anything or even use a flashlight to look inside.
@@djsi38t right. It's been a week since I watched it, but I'm thinking it's a dry sump oil system anyways. (If I'm remembering correctly)
On the 2001 and 2002 yz250fs that lever on the bars isn’t the hot start it’s the decompression lever in 03 the went to an auto decomp cam but on the 01 and 02’s if you don’t bump it past top dead center with that decomp lever it’s about impossible to kick it over
Almost got a yz450 for my first bike I picked up a 250 sx so happy the guy selling the 450 said he was looking for a 2 stroke
With all the experience you have with bikes, my guess is that you knew straight away that the engine was buggered.
But you are too polite to come out and say it.
That bike must be so relieved to have been rescued off the muppets that had it.
You will save it for sure.
When he was shimming the valves how did he get the shim size of 1.62 I was just confused where he got that from
If the hole at 10:48 is leaking AF, you got a cracked head. The hole is drainage for the spark plug well.
Keep it up
Big issues with Chinese fcr39 carbs are the fuel screw tip breaks off in the carb stick a pin threw the hole in carb and new fuel screw if so
14:38 Bike is dry-sump. You wont get any oil on dipstick until you start it and warm it up.
Vinny is cool dog, he was like dad this bike is in bad shape 😂
That thing looks way clapped out, your a brave soul trying to resurrect the needs of this bike
The hole in the cylinder is not for head gasket leak..itsfor valve cover gasket in the spark plug hole.
Sure you would need to stripe the entire engine to clean all metal out of it, great channel.
U didn't really give up on the bike and barry it. I was really looking forward to you figuring thay POS out
Maybe they forgot center oiler ring, it happens, seen it a few times, owner always says it ran fine.
If you do try, THANK YOU.❤
Yes, they make actual tools for that too. Especially if you are routinely working on bikes like he is. Dude... A tire iron? Really?
Great vid..do a intro drawing with Vinny in it..they where great intros from the past..b safe.peace
Using the wrong engine oil can really mess up things . Judging by the slack in the chain makes me think it has the wrong oil in it. I know this because I used auto oil in a bike and it caused the chain loosen up a lot. I put the right oil in it and completely changed the clutch operation no slippage .
Do you ever pressure wash these before working on them? Would that help to see what's actually going on?
He use too idk if he does anymore though
he can't due to the cold weather
Why is the compression test still so high with a decompression mechanism? Compression on my 08 crf250r with the decompression mechanism says it should be only 57psi.
Hard days work right there buddy! You'll get it going!
That kicking over normal then really hard remime of when crank bearing went bad on kx85. Haven't finished watching but hoping it is just the valves
Love these vids man I learn soo much keep it up, looking forward to the update on this bike
Those models have to be running for a few minutes for the oil to get up unto the frame where the dipstick is. So if you check the oil level when the bike hasn’t been ran in a while you may think it has no oil but it might have the correct amount
Saw that clean edge of the piston usually means piston to head contact
That dog is such a chiller
Bro coolant coming trough the carb air line
Are these cylinders sleeved or nickasil? Could've been bored over and wrong size piston
Otherwise the compression is too much to kick it over
Another one you’ll have fixed in no time… Awesome videos I always learn something every video keep up the great work 😎😎
Be careful I had an 02 yz250f that would get stuck when kicking it just like that, and the crank ended up being bad, had no up and down play but when rotating it would get stuck randomly. So make sure to check that👍🏼
Something in your garage around the 29 minute mark is making a HIGH Pitch chirp
