Hi Ayra, I’m not a miniaturist but a book artist, and we often have issues with warping book boards in covers. We’re always taught that when you add moisture to a board (usually glue or paste or paint) you need to do the same to the reverse side of the board. So consider either applying a layer of glue (maybe mod podge?) or priming / painting both sides of your foam pieces so the tension of introduced moisture cancels itself out. In the first floor of the Beetlejuice house, you painted / glued the flooring down but the underside of the floor (the ceiling of the basement) is raw foam core, so the fibers in the paper flooring layer are contracting causing the warp. Also, be careful with adhesive tapes and make sure they are archival / acid free. If they aren’t, as they age they can break down, become brittle and make the paper acidic. We often mix a bit of diluted rice / wheat starch paste into the PVA glue to slow the drying time when working on large areas. I would hate to see all of your amazing work break down over time. I hope this helps and keep up the amazing work!

Wonderful information! I am going to pin this so people can see it and read through if they are looking for solutions! Unfortunately part of the warping problem is the glue that is sandwiched in between the two layers of foamboard so I can no longer add any moisture to that side. Its the double layer that is causing me problems I think! And great tip on the archival / acid free tape. I have resigned myself to the fact that nothing I make will be archival because I use so many recyclables. There is no telling how long things will last😬 But when it is an available option I definitely go for something that will last longer! Thank you for sharing your expertise with us❤

@@BentleyHouseMinisscrapbooking uses mostly acid free and there is a double sided tape with red backing (tape is transparent) that’s strong as a horse (or dinosaur). There are many different brands of this tape and all have the red backing so it’s easy to tell

It's such a big part of this art form and I feel like hiding it is setting up false expectations. Also, the problem solving (when it works) is some of the most rewarding parts too😊 Or figuring out how to work around it when it refuses to be solved (like in this video😄)
I'm so happy the flooring tape worked so well for you. Seam tape is meant for attaching full size vinyl or carpet to a subfloor for decades in a wide range of temperatures, so it's plenty strong. I'll be using seam tape to attach layers of cardboard from now on as well.

I just managed to buy some archival double sided tape just the other day when shopping, it only came in small reels so now I’m going to hunt for more online. I never knew there was archival double sided tape before this. If I find it I will send a link.
I love this type of video where you're troubleshooting spaces and planning how to furnish each space etc. I'd like to make a cardboard or foamboard dollhouse someday, so these types of videos are very helpful.

Old houses are always settling. My childhood home was over a 100 years old and the whole house was on all sorts of angles. I remember as a toddler being able to set a ball in one corner of the room and have it roll all the way to the other. The warps are accurate to life. ❤️

WHOA! You have just helped me avoid a very time consuming and expensive error........................................I was so impressed with this project that I was seriously considering creating my project (a very large, multistory town house) out of foamboard. I am now going to go have a luncheon cocktail and resign myself to giving up my first born and a year's income so I can purchase the necessary plywood and a carpenter to cut, route, and generally finish the wood for assembly............................ and I still gotta figure out what the, now very heavy, project will sit on. Thank You!

I am so glad my video could help you make a decision for your grand project. It is a big thing to commit to a certain material and I honestly didn't know how it would go when I started this whole thing. I could totally see doing a combo where the floors were made from wood so they would always sit flat and then the walls were foamboard so they were easier to cut. But I don't really know how that would go without trying it either!
From my experience in miniatures, wood (plywood included) warps with moisture, too.
@@daalelli mind you, because plywood (even doorskin which is about 1/8" thick) has layers with the grains in orthogonal directions, it is a lot more dimensionally stable than a sheet of solid veneer, say basswood, of the same thickness.

For cutting grooves, you might find a linoleum cutter helpful. It has a very sharp u-shaped or v-shaped cutting end that make grooves easily. They're sharp enough to cut leather, rubber, and plastic so foamboard would be no problem.

Under the stairs would be a great closet- have things like a hula hoop rocking horse- and possibly a visiting goul. Or some things that were really popular in the 80s like some forgotten cabbage patch dolls or Beanie babies, Or even something to tie it into the adams house or the captains quarters. Then you could put your shoe in the closet.

I love your problem solving. I fight warping so much in my own work, so I totally get your frustration. I love the bonding tape as I call it, only problem I had is over time it yellowed on my boards but, if you can find a non acidic tape its a beautiful medium to stop warping your friend is so right 😊

I LOVE carpet tape for my minis! It’s so much easier and less messy than glue. Especially when you’re laying down wood pieces and planning on staining them later. You don’t get that weird glue cast where the wood stain won’t stain. I found out it works really well for felt and cardboard too. I’ve also found cutting it with a razor blade is much easier than scissors. Scissors tend to get covered in the adhesive and need to washed after each use.

You never ceased to amazing me. You are so resourceful and inventive and a great problem solver. Good on ya re.warping foam board. By the by, I use that heavy duty two sided tape and it can be bear to cut because of sticking to the scissors. So a tip. I bought me some titanium no stick scissors. Quite inexpensive and works a treat. Love how the house is shaping up.

Love the progress -- you really did make quite a bit even if it doesn't seem so to you! I am a little concerned about head room at the top of the attic stairs if the roofline I glimpsed in your 3D model is accurate, but I know you'll work it out. So glad we didn't have to wait for Beetlegust for more!
We think alike lol! I double checked the headroom a few times and I think it will work out ok since it's near the chimney and the attic ceiling is higher there. If it's still not right I can make a minor bump out that still won't effect the front view of the house... in theory lol! Fingers crossed! Thanks Fran😊❤

Warp is definitely the bane of my existence, too. Would a strip of paper with maybe Fabritac and hot glue on the underside of the front porch anchor it straight unobtrusively? I tried the tape with piecing together flooring in the two 12th scale attic room boxes I joined together to make what will be a memory of my childhood, a building we called the "wash house". After covering the floors with flooring paper and mod podge, it bubbled like crazy but was perfectly flat once it dried. Shyra is a rock star for that tip! I'll be using that method going forward! Beetlejuice looked like he wants a disco ball under the stairs LOL It's looking beautiful and I can't wait to see what you and Mr. Technology come up with for lighting. Mod Podge can be so tricky sometimes when it does that! I always tend to panic when it starts bubbling up but most of the time it does calm down... it just likes to worry us in the mean time! Lol a Disco ball would be hilarious, especially since he can shrink to whatever size he wants... party under the stairs!😄

This is a true testament to your wizardry! What an amazing amount of thought has gone into the prep for this second story! There is something I have used in the past called "gator board". It isn't just heavy duty foamboard, it's HEAVY DUTY foamboard, lol! It is extremely hard to cut with the Xacto blade but it is possible. Since you tend to layer the boards, it would be a really easy fix to use the gator board as the base and the regular foam board for the layer you will dig the trenches out of. I might have a small sample floating around if you want to check it out. Thanks for the wonderful video!
Thank you my friend!!😊 It was quite a puzzle to figure out that transition but I am glad you like how it all came out. The Gator board is a great idea, at least for the floor pieces. That would definitely help keep the warp down. I also have a few small pieces sitting around and it is hard stuff to get through!
Im building a dollhouse out of foam board too and have encountered warps. I've found that coating each side at the same time with some type of finish, paint, modge podge...helps. in some cases i remove the paper altogether. Foam board is easier to work with but does have it's challenges!
It is definitely a challenging material. If I trusted it to keep it's strength I would rip all the paper off of it lol! The paper is always the problem ;) Thanks for sharing the techniques you have found helpful!

Great job Ara! Love the fact you'll be using the space under the stairs; can't wait to see what you put under there. I had to laugh when you mentioned staring at it for a long time; I do the same thing 😂. Sometimes I take a photo too, I don't know why but I seem to notice things more in a photo than just with my eyes; very weird. BTW., I've come up with a way of making the automaton I was planning, so that might be a "thing" after all 😊

Our neighbors, growing up, were Uber rich. Their main bath was all black with gold fixtures. They had a gianormous sunken tub in the center of the room with a bench like seating situation around the perimeter. …oh and a bidet! That was the first time I’d seen a bidet. She was European and his family were lumber moguls on the Oregon coast. I’m not sure how they ended up in a little farming community. 🤣. All this in the 1980’s.
Yes to the black bathroom fixtures, I think that sounds right! I hadn't even considered the gold handles etc... perfect touch to show some wealth and class😄 I am sure Delia would love it! I remember the first time I saw a bidet... a kid told me it was a water fountain but thankfully I already knew he wasn't to be trusted and went to tell my mom lol! He got in trouble.

Oooh. Maybe pivot to gator board? It’s harder to cut but is a foam core that doesn’t warp.
Gatorboard would be great for at least the floors I am sure! It's so expensive though that it would be hard to use for everything. I may have to try it for the 3rd floor!
Great Videos! I know the warping problem very well... I always apply gesso on both sides of a board and let it dry standing up... This helps a lot if you paint or glue on them later... thanks for your great content!
Such a great tip on prepping foam board. I do zero prep work on them and that could help if I know it's going to be painted! Thank you!
I used two sheets of 3 millimeter foam board with "walls" from about 1 centimeter high, also 3 millimeter thick foamboard in between, wherever needed, solidly glued in. Hot glue wont do. For the walls the material needs to be oriented vertically. So horizontal sheet, vertical walls, horizontal sheet. Its a bit thick, but quite stable and usually wont warp. Orient the sheets so the warping goes into the opposite direction, they cancel each other out.
I glued the wall to the lower sheet first with lots of weights on them. After the glue is dry, i put the upper sheet on it, again with lots of weights on top. It needs quite some time to dry, but the result is solid.

Looks amazing as usual! When I think of the attic stairs, I think of the steam from the workers, I just had a thought maybe you could do some kind of misty effect as a grand finale, dry ice or something...
In the hidden space you should have two holes in the floor and first floor ceiling so you can have the aftermath of when the two people towards the end flew through the ceiling by beetle juice

Have you considered trying PVC foam board instead of regular foam board? It's tougher, smoother, paperless, and non-porous so it won't warp. Ideal for model and dio bases. Love your "key" solution BTW!

Hey! Just a thought on the tape thing with doing wallpaper and your thinner materials. You might consider trying the 2-sided roller adhesives that scrapbookers and card artists use. It provides excellent, strong adhesion but without the bulk and it is very much easier to apply than trying to cut and peel the larger 2-sided tapes. I use it for alot of similar projects and it makes it super easy and I've never had anything come apart.

As a amateur miniaturist, the warping is the main reason i don't like using Foambord. I use cardboard instead

Thoughts: is there some sort of metal weight like tiny button size that can be added to the corners of the porch to help the warp.
Seam tape can you use this with doll house bandages for strength in areas that need it.

If you changed the access to the extra space under the stairs to Charles' study, then he would have a little quiet place that truly was his very own. Who's to say he didn't, right? I was flipped around and was hoping the space could open to Lydia's room, but no. That's okay, he also needs a space away from the chaos that is his wife. Lol

I wish I would have thought of those keys for my Addams Attic. On both main sections I glued them permanently which is fine except the main part which is the actual dollhouse has this whole level of height.
It was a sudden decision on my part during the process and I have never tried them before. I was planning to permanently glue them too until recently!

I just put together the walls and floor of a book nook I'm making out of foam board. I've had so much warping. I was adding textured paper for wallpaper to one side and even after drying under heavy books, they came out looking like smiles. I wound up adding the paper to both sides and left them under a lot of heavy books. It helped, but it wasn't perfect. I saw some suggestions about using sewing pins to put them together with glue. HA! The warp just pushed them out. LoL!
The warping isn't too bad now, but I'm going to go with it, (so when you said you were going to raise the porch supports to reach the porch, I had a giggle). I'm planning on adding decorative edging to cover the gaps (and bare edges of the foam board). It'll also hopefully add some connection strength.
I don't think I'll ever use foam board for largish structures again. I was challenging myself to use what I had.
A lot of building with foam board is just adapting to what it decides to do lol! I am so glad you were able to get it to a point you were happy with it❤
