Just from a control engineering perspective you can not really make this work with a model rocket using solid propellant. There is no way to alter thrust once it goes off. You can get the perfect altitude setting for a motor only to have it be slightly different for the next motor. A gust of updraft can put you off target. This is why control engineering exists in the first place; to iron out the small differences and still reach a set goal. HOT TIPS: The scale of your rocket makes landing on grass similar to a Space-X rocket landing in the woods on rolling hills. To compensate for this while keeping the same landing gear looks, you could do a few things. You already have the sensors and PID controller, so put that USB battery inside the rocket body and use it to shift the center of gravity with cheap microservos. You could get a similar or better result with a linkage from your motor gimbal to the landing struts that connect when the springs deploy them. Alternatively, you could give the landing gear their own servos (should only need two with a clever mechanism) and this would eliminate the burning band release and associated failure modes. Servos are more reliable in terms of timing. Also, look into "thrust reversal" as used on jet engines. With careful heat shielding, a thrust reverser can nullify the thrust from your solid rocket engine, giving the effect of shutting it off without switching to a liquid or hybrid rocket setup. Most importantly, if you want someone to hire you, don't attempt to look like them. This gains you zero brownie points (unless they need a fall guy or stunt double) and maxes out the creepy points. @@Stealth360stealth I completely agree that he naturally has a significant resemblance to the very person he's informally asking for a job from, and I suspect that the video producer did too. I also understand that a person's appearance can change significantly, based on their styling choices and outward expression. At 0:30 in this video, it's evident that he has only a vague resemblance to Elon Musk. Notably, his rocket is displayed with his business logo "BPS" and is adorned with the US flag, indicating that he identifies as an American with his own business idea. Over the course of the video, his style changes. With all the memorabilia that he wears and surrounds himself with being associated with one other business person and company that he expresses desire to work for, the similarity becomes overtly unnatural. I have nothing against him personally, and I pointed out that giving up his individuality to adopt that of another results in neither. Keep in mind that you liked the previous observations when they applied to a human creation, but not when I used that same process to critique the aspects of a human-created persona. I strongly suspect that the rapid change in appearance and gradual change in facial expressions, etc. were likely a product of feedback from the video segment's producer and the clips displayed were chosen by the editors. I suspect that he was styled and coached to exaggerate these similarities on advice from the show's producer, and since he has a photography business, likely followed the advice from what he would consider a successful version of himself without regard for the difference in objectives. The problem with that, and the underlying message of my comment's final tip, is that a person who is willing to adopt someone else's persona to replace their own, as well as to start one's own rocket business and state a desire to be hired by a competitor, is mechanically unlikely to succeed in those goals just as the other things I gave advice on. The statement I gave was intended to be self explanatory to prevent the need for a block of text as large as this one.
@@codebender9435 That would add more complexity and weight, but would also likely work until motor cutout. From his demonstration of mastery in keeping the rocket upright in flight with the current thrust vectoring, I'd say it's within his ability to implement it. Imagining a group of Estes A10 motors firing up just at the end, that would be exciting to watch. Unfortunately, solid motors are notoriously hard to light off simultaneously. I recall the Mythbusters were able to pull it off though.

I liked this comment until you got to the part where you're saying hes trying to look like elon musk. Dude I think he was just born that way..
You look like young Elon Musk, btw nice work!
someone needs to tell him about kerbal space program...
he knows about it already. he frequents the stream EJ_SA's chat. which actually lead to joe becoming more popular, starting a patreon, and really taking off with BPS
KSP + KoS
I need mechjeb on that.
Pity there’s no mechjeb for the console version..
EZ
He's already on the next level m8.
ruclips.net/user/musicmakr
He already knows about KSP and he's, I guess good at it
The fact that this man created a self-landing, thrust vectoring, rocket in his house and a random field, while it took a whole team of engineers like a decade is absolutely amazing.
Damnn he is Elon 2.0
Just waiting when he made self driving RC car :D
"self driving rc car" lmao big brain time
RC means remote controlled so if it was self driving it wouldn’t really be RC
@@Domtooboss no shit
@@Domtooboss it can still be self driving and remote controlled, you think self driving cars don't have the ability to take over?
Woah wtf it’s Elon Musk Jr
He said, "We're just kind of starting out right now," as if he's seen the future, and his company is widely successful, and I wish I had that kind of confidence.
This guy is fuckin awesome. Working on propulsively landing a rocket that he built HIMSELF? Mad respect. This guy has some serious drive, and was happy to fail because he could learn from it. He’s going places for sure.

When your older brother gets all the good stuff, so you have to work with the scraps
That is some impressive coding and progress!
Good to see people are still finding out about this guy, rn is probably a good time to get invested in thus project
Dude keep on doing that! SpaceX might purchase your company one day!
This is literally something I’ve dreamt about doing for years. Only thing keeping me from it is other things I have to work on, finite time and money. Still learning skills relevant to it though
If that's your attitude, your never gonna get anything done in life. You literally have 1 life, make things happen CHASE YOUR DREAMS
What Midnite said. Just do it.
Jesus they act like it’s rocket science or something
Wait.

Actually this is easy thing he's doing. It is only matter of how much money you have....
@@Kawka1122 no its not lmao
@@alfiepicton1339 yes it is.
@@Kawka1122 So you could design an app to control and launch a rocket from your phone that can also almost land a rocket like space x. I'm sure you can
you know every once in a while i land on a channel so good that if i move on without subscribing i think i will go to hell!!!! NICE JOB MAN! WORLD NEEDS MEN LIKE YOU.
Guys this is the same dude that carbonated his milk.
Ha! This dude looks EXACTLY like Elon’s little brother! 😂👌 What a Legend!
Kimbal? Lol kind of
The solid fuel rocket burn rate is slightly inconsistent so that could be the reason why you might not be able to make a perfect soft touch landing. But what you've achieved so far is still pretty much remarkable buddy. I hope SpaceX takes you in.
I was wondering about that. I suspect he'll also have problems generalizing this to the full flight because he'll need an engine he can restart.
audio production graduate building rocket models. My man is such an inspiration
Nice work, I wish I had time to do this kind of thing, just have to live it by watching videos like these.
You do have the time, you just have to make time
You definitely have a spare 30 minutes everyday to do something. You can make that into one or two hours by limiting social media
Here we go again. Start small. 3D printer and some arduino programming helps. They don't cost you 50k like a uni grad, do they?
It's like the movie October Sky
October Sky ReFueled...
Watched that movie, great movie!
Thought the same
Imagine SpaceX giving him an opportunity to build his own rocket and send it to the space or even the moon.
that's very very hard to do alone
Small or big scale seeing a rocket land back to earth is always going to be cool
This guy should get a job at SpaceX

Switching to Geico can save you 15% or more on Rocket Insurance
Declan Jolowski 😂😂😂😂
did Elon Musk split into like the good version and the bad version or something?
The engineer version and an artist version.
Musk stumbled over the power cable to Kryten's triplicator. Musk is still himself, this guy is the good one, and there is also an evil one out there. Waiting. In a volcanic lair. Watching. Waiting.

I know this video is old but I’ll comment anyway. I am 44 and just started my path on rocketry. My friend and I are building a sugar based solid propellant rocket. Neither of us has ever done anything like this. We are very excited even though we know the likelihood of success is minimal. Dreamers encourage dreamers. I love your videos. The only failure is failure to put forth effort! I hope you achieve your dream. 🤙
