The Pontiac Firebird is an American automobile built by Pontiac from the 1967 to the 2002 model years. Designed as a pony car to compete with the Ford Mustang, it was introduced February 23, 1967, the same model year as GM's Chevrolet division platform-sharing Camaro.[1] This also coincided with the release of the 1967 Mercury Cougar, Ford's upscale, platform-sharing version of the Mustang.[2][3]
The name "Firebird" was also previously used by GM for the General Motors Firebird 1950s and early 1960s concept cars.
The second generation debut for the 1970 model year was delayed until February 26, 1970, because of tooling and engineering problems; thus, its popular designation as a 1970½ model, while leftover 1969s were listed in early Pontiac literature without a model-year identification.[11] This generation of Firebirds were available in coupe form only; after the 1969 model year, convertibles were not available until 1989.

Replacing the "Coke bottle" styling was a more "swoopy" body style, while still retaining some traditional elements. The top of the rear window line going almost straight down to the lip of the trunk lid, a look that was to epitomize F-body styling for the longest period during the Firebird's lifetime. The new design was initially characterized with a large C-pillar, until 1975 when the rear window was enlarged.
Second generation (1970-1981) 1970
There were two Ram Air 400 cu in (6.6 L) engines for 1970: the 335 hp (250 kW) L74 Ram Air III (366 hp (273 kW) in GTO) and the 345 hp (257 kW) LS1 Ram Air IV (370 hp (280 kW) in GTO) that were carried over from 1969. The difference between the GTO and Firebird engines was that the secondary carburetor's throttle linkage had a restrictor which prevented the rear barrels from opening completely,[1] adjusting the linkage could allow full carburetor operation resulting in identical engine performance.
For the 1970 and 1971 model years, all Firebirds equipped with radios had the antennas mounted "in-glass" in the windshield.
I have just bought this kit to build for my Father. He had this car when I was a kid. Great memories.
I had this kit when I was a kid back in the early 90's. Then I bought the full size version about 10 years later.
Haha, something similar happened to me, sort of. In 2003 I bought a 1972 Challenger and for some reason this car seemed familiar to me. I dug out my box of old models I had made as a kid and lo and behold I had a Plum Crazy Purple Dodge Challenger that was a ‘73-‘74 model. It was from the Otaki Rock Machine series with rear rubber tires and was motorized. Only difference from the ‘72 model body wise was the addition of “bumperettes” for federal safety standards. This was cool because ‘72-‘74 Challengers were not as popular as the ‘70-‘71 Challengers and model kits of the ‘72-‘74 Challengers are very hard to find. The one I built was from about 25 years prior (and it was the only model car I ever built with my brother who made an Otaki Thunderbird) and it was from the no longer in existence Otaki Japanese mode company which became Fujimi. It’s a rare model and the fact that 25 years later I had the real car it was based on I thought was such a funny coincidence.
i'm working on mine love this kit doing mine in blue with white inside black carpet looking sweet to thanks chris love your videos sir
Cool, enjoy yours!
My sister had a 1970 Trans Am . She brought it new very similar to this model. It didn't have the bird on the front and it came with Polyglass GT tires the blue patches were a little more rounded at the corners and I don't believe the edges of the blue were darker . It was an automatic with blue interior the transmission shifted hard even under normal acceleration ( no gentle slip into the next gear) . Brings back memories.
It only took me four years to score this kit at an affordable price and now I can finally follow your tutorial to build this beautiful kit. Thanks for the inspiration buddy!
Enjoy!
Thanks for showing the enthusiasm that you do in your videos, helps keep me inspired.
Thanks Gene!
You really made this kit look amazing
As soon as I saw the blue version on the box art I knew I wanted this kit and I want it even more now seeing how amazing your build came out. I think you made the right decision when you painted the scoop white.
Thanks, I like it too!
Absolutely beautiful.....I love the 70s cars I grew up see them all the time.....the interior shots are my favorites
Thanks John!
I liked this video before I even started watching it. I know you wont dissapoint!!!! Keep loading these videos!!!! I really enjoy it.
Thanks for watching!

The paint job came out great, it looks like a die cast model in the thumbnail!
Thanks for watching!
I decided to do a mini drift car. 28th scale. And got a extended chassis. Just to make this car. Solely on watching all your videos after I looked into some scale bodies. Man you do a great job. I'm 50 years old. I used to build these on rainy days way back in the day. In the '80s. What was that hobby shop in the mall HobbyTown. Frog grasshopper you name it. And then didn't touch the model cars after discovering girls until I had my own sons. My mother actually had my tamaya hot tricks Fox completely customized used to race it. And I had that mako shark Corvette top that was on like a Walmart chassis. Well I've got tons of us see trucks. Serious ones you beat the hell out of. But this winter we did a Honda monkey Bike model. Just going through it and trying to keep my son from rushing. Been making him understand that preparation makes everything. Teachable moment that's cool. I've watched all your videos man you do a great job. I want to put or make my own wide body calf hips. I've already got a sheet of abs. Cuz they make my own bumpers for my eighth scale truggy and other trucks. What would be the best putty to use. I have some JB weld around the house but use it all the time. My boys are into dirt bike BMX RC cars everything and they break everything so. I also have fiberglass and fiberglass body filler. From fixing a friend's tub. Would I be okay either using both of those. Or be too much sanding. What could you recommend for a party to do the calf hips and make it meet up with the front bottom spoiler. I watch the repop of the rat fink cars. Hot rods with the helmet you did in Chrome. I was going to go white and blue. But now I'm thinking maybe Chrome and black and try to do pinstriping. Like on the old school boats and stuff cause the people did and putting the name on the door handle right about it. Yeah I'm going to take my time with this any suggestions would be great. If I could send you my email or. Text. Would be great. I got an idea if you have a hobby shop. These little cars changed the whole game could bring these models back. I'm hoping my product comes out nice I know the body work will look good it's just painting. Cop on the drywall for 30 years and I yeah arthritis kicks in quickly. And what would be a good masking. I've used vaseline on my tires to make white wall and then wipe it off after it dries they're not on little models on mini bikes and stuff but anyways I'm sorry for the book. I've watched so many videos you do a really good job you get an attaboy. Those don't get thrown around the Northeast too often peace out man God bless
I just sold the real deal done exactly the same !! The interior is a little bit to bright but it looks fabulous. Thanks for doing it in that colour combo cameo white and Lucern blue the best bird ever
Thank you for spending some of your day on my channel!
Such a sweet kit. I'm getting it tomorrow. I hope my looks as good as yours. I'm gonna copy your colors. You always pick great color combo. Great job as usual!
sweet i got a case of these coming can't wait to get em and build one

@@hpiguy oh yes chris i will for sure going to do a pro street one and a pro touring one
Damit Chris, now I have to get this one too! Great build. Keep them coming.
MR has it ready to ship!
Those second generation firebirds look best in white. Well done Chris
Thank you!
Best memories with my father making these cars
Nice!
I absolutely love the white… scoop… like you said they got it confused on the box… Nice call… Very nice Application… I like the way you move… my friend…
Damn… I was going to paint mine blue or red… until I seen how you made the white one immaculate.. Well done Sir… Well done. 🙏
Wonderful job. You always do a great job. And you really shine when it comes to picking paint colors. You are a master! 👍
Really nice build. I ordered this yesterday off of Amazon. Will be in on Monday.
Enjoy!
i remember when my dad brought his first brand new car home, a 1970 firebird but it was the esprit.... still a gorgeous car.
I absolutely love your videos. They are so Helpful. This kit is my next build.
Happy building
Thanks a lot!
Beautiful kit!. A buddy in high school had a car like this but didn't have the giant engine this one has. Was still a fun car.
Thanks Bam!
I just finished this model, did mine blue, great kit. Yours looks great.
Very cool!
Wow that is one beautiful ‘Bird..... excellent build!!!🔥👍💪🏼
Thanks Derick!
Thanks for the review! Very cool kit! I like to make some of my models of either cars my family had or from movies.
I had this kit about 10 years ago and made a replica of the Trans Am from the David Carradine movie, “Cannonball”. I used the blue stripe and then outlined that stripe with yellow and then got letters from a crafts store and wrote the Cannonball letters on the side of the car. The included decal sheet had enough decals for the hi-po parts stickers on the side.
I remember that movie!
Great build again Chris! Being a Pontiac man myself (back in the day) I worked at the local Pontiac dealership in the parts department. Never heard anyone else but the mechanics say "prin-dull"! Frickin awesome!
Thanks Dave!
@@hpiguy I'm finished with the VW. Next build is the Tamiya Ducati 1199 S Tricolore. I'll be shooting some video of the process, so I want to thank you for your inspiration!
I bought this kit after watching this video, love the scale look of the kit! Can’t wait to get started on it. Got mine from Auto World, they were great to deal with.
Hope you enjoy it!
This came out great Chris! And the spoilers is on correctly 🤪🤪
Seriously the end result of this build belies the short amount of time you actually put into it it looks good.
Thanks so much!
Looks a lot like the firebird/Trans am on Thunderbolt & Lightfoot movie. That's a really nice looking model Chris!
Thanks for doing that one.
That's what I was hoping for but they've not provided the firebird decal for the bonnet (hood) which is a real shame!
Thanks man!
Check the 1977 MPC Firebird I built it will have the decals you want to use on this. MR has both of them in stock.
Beautiful build ! Chris thanks for sharing
Thanks Charles!
Dude that’s awesome! Love that paint job and that’s one of my favorite cars! Great job!
Thanks Tim!
Just got one of these as my first model, this gives me high hopes
Nice tip with the wheels and the alcohol and the Q-tip to bring back that chrome lip. Never knew that
I just bought the same model. Thanks for your advice on the front and rear bumpers. Nice looking build.
Great build! This is definitely on my "to get" list.
Thank you Jason!
Always enjoy your work Chris!! I;m more of a tank guy, but I went and got my first car kit today!!
Thanks Cliff, love me some armor too, I'll build anything.
If that wasn't sitting on your work bench, and had some outdoor scenery behind it, I would say it looks like it just came off the showroom floor. Looks like the real deal. Excellent work.
Thanks a lot Jim!
Ultra cool photo shoot at the end!
Thanks!
Engine intake, carb and bay look delicious.
Brilliant work Hpi.
Thanks Jono!
FANTASTICAL!. Great color choice 👍. I'm trying your build style of putting the subassemblies together first then painting. Hope that speed's things up. Otherwise I'll have to live to 147 yr old to finish my stash. Another one brought to life my friend.
Thank you Danny!
That came out awesome, makes me want one. It's good too see you painting the build now and the info.
Thanks for watching Bevan!
Excellent! It looks so real. 👍👍😀
Thanks Terri!
Love the white scoop contrasting with blue decals! Also Thanks for the tip with the rubber cement and wheels - helps us new modellers!
Thanks, me too!
its beautiful... i had an 80 trans am, white with the blue bird, diamond plate dash, 4 wheel disk, 6.9 liter had these same wheels on it... nice work
Thanks bud!
@@hpiguy a real 1:1 trans am that is lol
nice build of an old kit, I liked that you used the white scoop over blue as the box art showed
Thank you Craig!
So life like and realistic never was a fan of this style but u have changed my mind
Thanks Ralph!
Always loved that year's firebird, it looks like you could drive it away, great build as always, one more kit for my bucket list.
Thanks Charles!
Really nice car. I love the entire run of those cars. Good job on the final reveal. Day one out of the lot, there would have been tiny specks of melted black rubber just behind the rear tires.
LOL, thanks Stu!
Excited to see this kit come back out. Earlier issues of this kit, even from the 2000s, are hard to find and kinda expensive if you do. So now I'm gonna get four of these lol.
Those early second-gen F-Bodies are my favorite. Such great, gorgeous cars!
Modelroundup.com will be happy to get the order out to you fast!
@@hpiguy absolutely! One of my regular haunts. Realiable, great service and inexpensive to boot!
As always, you did a great build.
Revell took great care of their old molds and that's why they're still like this to this day. I bought 2 cadavers of a previous edition of that kit, to build a resto-mod. Can't wait to start on that project. But I have like 10 other projects to finish before. lol
This kit is already in sales here in Québec prov. some friends have bought it and a friend that own a hobbyshop have it in stock.
Thanks man!
Nice! You did the right thing painting the scoop white, looks great this way.
For some reason Tamiya paints always come out great, even if you don't need them too.
For me Molotow and Amsterdam also have some cool colors in a can, easy to work with, forgiving and low pressure spray if you're looking for something outside the box. Keep up the good work!
Tamiya makes some really nice paints, I agree. Thanks!
Entertaining and informative videos what a difference a fun personality makes thank you
Thank you!
I like the 67-75 Firebirds so this maybe on my bucket list to check out.
Enjoy!
I had this kit when it first came out. It is a beautiful kit! Of my favorite trans am! Great build as usual!
Thanks Richard, it was fun!
My new grip tweezers I bought from your link will probably put mirrors on much easier!
That is an awesome Firebird, Chris! This and the same year Camaro are just great looking pony cars!
Thanks!
Simply gorgeous! What a great job! Congrats and thanks for the tips!
Thanks friend!
Your surely correct on the hood, i would agree with you it should be 2 separate colors to make it stand out. Great Job as always and thanks!
Thanks Jeremy!
@@hpiguy Im still waiting on that bad fast Sprint Car
Wow the pic of this model looks real on your post pic. Awsome job.
Thank you!
One of my favourite muscle cars of all time, another awesome build bud
Thanks a lot Gary!
Great Kit.... and fantastic work Chris...
Thank you!
That us an absolute beauty. Fantastic build . I'm glad you used the traditional factory wheels , l'm not keen on the low profile over sized ones 👍
Thanks Jerry! I'm not a huge fan of those either but they can look ok on some older resto-rods and stuff.
Fantastic work!! I really wish the fourth gens would get more love in the model world.
Thanks John!
Really well done. I had a '73 back in the day and I loved it.
Thanks David!
Sharpe looking car. Great job. Wheels look awesome.
Thanks Al!
😂😂😂😂😂 saying that the two color interior looks like kaka, is something out of this world. Just keep in mind that my mother tongue is spanish, so it sounds absolutely funny. It is exactly the same as when you were assembling a dragster and you've said "cojones" 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 it is absolutely funny once again. Chris, you're not only a great modeler but a great guy. Thank you so much.
That's a good looking kit. just might have to get one or two.
Looks awesome Chris in white and blue. Awesome build
Thank you!
Wow! What a perfect job sir, that is outstanding, a true model master.
Thanks Chris!
That is a really nice looking Pontiac firebird t/a..i have some models of trans-ams but don't have a 1970-73.. I've got a 1978 and a 1979 and some 1982s(the kitt car from Knight Rider).. I'll have to buy me the flat nosed version after seeing the one that you put together 😀😀😀
Thanks!
Once again, I argued with the "TV" until about 3/4 of the way through - then, you did it - it all worked. So I went back and watched again and your choices in the beginning make perfect sense. And, you make it look as fun as it is. I gotta lighten up. After this post I'm watching again (it's THAT good).
Thanks for sharing...
Fantastic!!!
Thanks RA!
Holy Crap!!! You crank them out! Love your videos.
Thanks Bill!
This is my absolute favorite Firebird body style. Love it! You did a great job.. she turned out gorgeous with a beautiful color scheme! I'll probably fit one into my next model budget :)

Wonderful model, even though I was sure you'd go for the blue version! You really made that white paintwork pop!
Thank you Simon, hadn't done a white car in a long time, I was due.
What a beautiful job, looks awesome!
Thank you!
Love it! Excellent build and color scheme. Thanks for showing it off.

Came up nice, mate. Another nice clean build with a great video.

a video on how you paint the wheels would be great to see. they always come out great.
Thanks, this is a much older video.
Recent videos from the past couple years cover that and much much more. Thanks!
It's Me..
Don't want to keep repeat myself......lol you know what I think about the build......lol

Beautiful car - love your color choice. Again, thanks for the tips, they help so much.
Thanks Mary!
Another great kit build
Thank you!
Nice build, nice looking kit. Might pick one of those up. Thanks.
Thanks Robert!
I buy this every time it’s on “sale” at Hobby Lobby. I’m going to build the the blue and 2 white cars one with the optional red interior
I recently received a magazine that told me this kit had been reissued;
I watched the video and was pleased to see that in addition to the upgraded tires (and terrible optional wheels and tires), that there have been several casting improvements to this kit since I bought it in a Monogram box in the 1990's;
I was pleased to see that the transmission is now an automatic (the old molds had it as a manual transmission with the automatic console(!?);
I was pleased to see what overall was a vastly improved decal sheet, but was confused as to why the "TRANS AM" decals for the fenders and rear spoiler are absent (I actually have an original Monogram uncut decal sheet that I verified it as previously having (I bought two of those Monogram kits, and one was highly modified past what the kit was intended for, which is why I have the spare decal sheet)
I get the reviews done many months before the magazines announce stuff.
Feel free to subscribe and stay updated!
I just bought this model. I am going to paint the model with lacquer. Wish me luck.
my favorite firebird, another priceless build, nice!
Thanks Mouse!
Super cool kit bro!!! Nice, I gotta go order one! As always thanks for the build and review 🏁🏁👍
Thanks for your time Whitey!
