Taiwan would have to be the best kept secret travel destination in Asia with stunning scenery, great food, good public transport, friendly people and for Westerners, it's a safe destination with the Rule of Law firmly applied so you're not troubled by may of the 'nuisance' issues you might face in parts of Europe.

Unfortunately, I don't believe you have a choice in this matter. This trail requires a permit and a guide.
Only permit, no need a guide in Taiwanese trails if you know some mandarin
