    A small portion of this video at the 3:35 mark was removed because it displeased RUclips's computers.
    It read...
    "His role as an executive would, on occasion, lead him to travel around the world in search of interesting and entertaining stories that could be brought home. In March, 1984, Haruo Shikanai traveled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, for the world famous Mardi Gras festival: Carnival. He did not come alone. A large camera crew, along with on-air talent, producers and some executives accompanied him on the trip. Witnessing the wonderful time everyone was having, an idea began to take shape.
    What if Japan had a Carnival of their own?"

    Did you know, in Yakuza 0 on PS4 which is set in the late 1980s; one of the night clubs is renamed to Maharaja for only that entry in the series. There are also vending machines called “Dream Machines” which you can win items from.
    In all other entries in the Yakuza series, the same club is called something else.

    • @GTV-Japan

      Get out! Now to be fair maharaja was used for other stuff at that time. There’s an ad I found but didn’t use that had maharaja as a club and other stuff but still that is very cool. I know the ps4 is still pretty new but I’ll have to pick one up someday and check that out!

    I'm not kidding when I say that this may be my new favorite video on RUclips. Words cannot express how much I wish I could've experienced Yume Kojo in the flesh. It literally sounds like the greatest event in history to me. If time travel were real and somebody asked me when and where I wanted to go, I'd be like, mid-1987, Tokyo, please, so I can attend Yume Kojo. ;) (Osaka would be fine too, of course, but I'd pick Tokyo of the two, simply because I'd have easy access to places like '80s Akihabara and such when not attending the event, which would be super awesome to see all on its own!)
    It's positively CRIMINAL that more people don't talk about this event, so I don't think I can overstate how much I appreciate the extreme thoroughness and attention to detail of both your previous video and this one.
    Since viewing your last video, I've collected a few Yume Kojo-related items -- a telephone card, an uchiwa fan that plays "It's a Small World" as you swing it, and a necklace as a gift for a friend. I really, really want to buy one of the masks, though -- I've been keeping an eye on Yahoo Japan Auctions for one, and checking a lot of old antique shops and such in places like Nakano Broadway.
    Not the same, though, as experiencing the event first-hand. But this video really is like the next best thing. Thank you so much for making it!

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  2 года назад +1

      Hey! Good to see you back my friend! You should look into buying one direct from Italy. They still exist! Anyway yeah it’s sad it’s not more well known and strange no one talks about it other than to explain super Mario 2. Which is interesting but there’s so much more. There’s soooooooo much technology and programs that were seen here and never seen again. A lot of it I’d consider lost. I have a magical romance card but how can I ever read the data on it? That program probably doesn’t exist anymore. Ditto the info kiosks and the robot janken game thing I show after super game z. It’s like a pink monitor with kids sitting around some kind of keyboard. Anyway the closest thing I’d say is Osaka expo 25 and I swear I will be there! They are Going to open the maglev that goes Tokyo to Osaka in 70 minutes or so!! Unbelievable!

    Seriously such a fantastic video. A certain historian covered the video game that came out of this. They only said this was a means for Fuji to talk about their upcoming shows and did NOT mention how this was meant to be a celebration of imagination. Even now, I cannot find anything about this event with a google search as it seems all people care about is Doki Doki Panic because of how it became Super Mario Bros. 2 in the US. Super Game Z looks like so much fun. I hope something like this happens again! Great work here again!

    I remember reading an interview that you did with Retro Injection and how you explained how you were rejected by several "big name" RUclipsrs who weren't interested before deciding you'll just make the video yourself. If you didn't happen to find that book, Gaijilionare TV wouldn't exist and the story of Yume Kojo '87 event would likely fade into obscurity, aside from the mind-blowing gamer fact regarding Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros 2/USA.
    I wasn't expecting you to remake the video but I'm glad you did, it's a lot better than the original version. Thank you for all your hard work presenting and documenting Japanese pop cultural history.

So I tried to find someone who was big and could spread the word. No one of any big size replied and I can kind of understand why. When you have someone emailing you out of the blue claiming to have secret info about Doki Doki panic. What would you think it was?! The only channel that replied was only 1600 subscribers which I thought was big at the time. That channel doesn’t even exist anymore and I can’t even recall the name. Some American in Thailand. He told me to take a hike basically. At the time I was just going to make one video and be done but it didn’t end up that way. That’s for sure. Thanks for the support

      @bluesteelbass 2 года назад

      @@GTV-Japan Ah, the white box... Even worse than the black box that cloaks itself in the shadows. The white box shows itself readily while revealing nothing, taunting even moreso! 😂
      I can't believe the caption of setting it to random, unless they ran into issues. The still picture at 25:44 shows a complex gradient that would be tough to pull off if the screens were even clustered vertically together, which could be assumed with the 3 screen tall dancing people in the video shots. The video shot, with repetition of objects, makes me hypothesize not every screen had a unique image, but with clever multiplexing to switch between the video disc inputs, could create the illusion as the 3 tall picture could be swapped to an adjacent stack displaying something else. I am guestimating 8 to 12 lassr disc systems, with the static picture mentioned above. The disc players would solve any issue with syncing with something like vcr tapes, which was what I was thinking at first.
      Now I wonder if they were arcade video cd's, or video laserdiscs...

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  2 года назад +2

      I have a list of all the machines used and laserdisc was not mentioned. Video discs and videotape are mentioned but it would probably be beta cam or super vhs at the least, it doesn’t say. I can't believe all of this was hidden behind my favorite NES game Super Mario Bros. 2 all this time. When I was playing it in 1991 I was in grade 2 and never in my wildest dreams would I have guessed this amazing festival was behind it all. What a fantastic idea it was, to nurture and inspire the dreams of the next generation. Loved the sentiment there at the end of the video. We are all living in that world now, we just need to make sure all of it is in service to the greater good of humanity, not humanity in service of IT. I’ve been recommending the original video to people as recently as a few weeks ago, though I haven’t watched it since it first came out. I was considering a rewatch anyway after all this time, but I feel like I will only appreciate the improvements if I see them both back to back. This is not a problem I mind having. When the subject comes up, I briefly describe it as a “World’s Fair like event put on by a Japanese television network to promote their programming while serving as a preview of the emerging millennium.” And then just link them to your old video, It’s criminally underdescribing it, but I always fear to say more would to risk errors and you covered and explained the event so well!

      @@GTV-Japan I finally watched it, and boy was it fantastic, even more so than the earlier video, which I still consider valuable. I was born in the US around the time this event took place, so it's fascinating having grown up both amidst the waning phase of the technology that was current at the time Yume Kojo, (analog broadcast TV, 8 bit video games, and DOS based computers were common sights for me) while also entering my teens and adulthood living first hand the world Yume Kojo optimistically forecast, including the act I'm participating in by watching and responding to this video.
      I'm curious, in the earlier video, you seemed to more regularly use the "Dream Factory" interpretation of the name, which is the version I have, over the years, seen associated when explaining the tie-in game for Famicom Disk System, whereas in this video you use "Dream Machine" seemingly universally. Based on period material I saw both in your OG video and in this one, it seems like they used the "Dream Machine" and "Dream Factory" styling interchangeably, which one would you say is more accurate to what they originally intended?

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  2 года назад +1

      In the old video I only used dream factory once offhandedly and kind of in a snarky way just do everyone knew what I was talking about. Fuji never ever used the words dream factory and always used dream machine. If you asked anyone what Yume Kojo meant in English they’d say dream machine. I also prefer that over factory because it shows you’re in the small minority who are “in the know” as opposed to the millions who just repeat the same story about the “super Mario 2 reskin” or what have you that’s been on every site forever. I really thought it would change a lot of mind and perceptions about what happened back then but it turns out a lot of people don’t care and just want to hear the same stories they already know. So when you say dream machine to someone and they say oh no you’re wrong it’s dream factory the game that became Mario 2 that promoted Fuji tvs fall lineup, you can walk away knowing your that much smarter.

      @@GTV-Japan Cool! I think it says a lot to the perceived prestige of the event that Nintendo was willing to put AAA resources into a game featuring characters they didn't even own the rights as a way to become involved, even if they didn't host any pavilions or exhibits on-site. I think that regardless of concerns over US market reception of the FDS version of Super Mario Bros 2, Nintendo not owning the characters for a game they spent so much time and money creating would have made something similar to the Famicom cartridge release of Super Mario USA an eventuality as a way for Nintendo to publish their own game without needing to pay royalties for arguably out-of-date characters while also promoting an event which had already came and went by then.

    We need such an event so badly at the moment.
    It seems like the whole world just looks back instead of forward, holding onto a past that wasn't sustainable in the slightest. We just administer and not create anymore, no real vision for the future a nation or the world population could work towards.
    As a kid from the 90s, I can't stand the resignation of people today.
    Back in the 90s, we always woke up in wonder what the next day could offer in technology advances or opportunities.
    After the mid-2000s most people lost this mindset and it seems, at least here in germany, many people just want back to the old days of limitless energy with pollution and oppression of minorities to support their status quo.
    No one can imagine a bright and coloful future anymore, especially if you consider art as a representation of the Zeitgeist and look at the current dystopian nightmares it depicts.
    I want to look forward again, try to create a better world for everyone and bring joy to the faces of the younger generation, so they can start dreaming of what's to come...

    It's honestly sad that we never got the original Doki Doki Panic in the US in its original format due to Fuji TV owning the characters somehow (let alone any copyright situations). It would've been a nice game for the US to play in. And I wouldn't have minded an OVA of Yume Kojo's cast. Anyhow, thanks for the director's cut of this. I played the game in 1987, but had no idea it was tied to such a large event until now. Even though I've been living in Japan for close to 2 decades, I haven't seen any retrospectives about Yume Kojo until I saw these videos. I wonder why this event and the original game are not mentioned more in Japan. It seems like Nintendo wants people to remember this as part of the Mario world rather than this other unique, one-off dream expo. Seeing some of the characters featured prominently in the Mario movie feels even stranger now.

    • @GTV-Japan
      @GTV-Japan  Год назад +3

      There are no videos about Yume Kojo because all the info was locked in Japanese and nobody knew how to find it. I had searched for a long long time and pretty much gave up only to accidentally stumble over it. It’s also much much easier to just recycle the same story about Super Mario Bros. 2 get 6-7 million clicks and make a fortune off of it. But I was kind of surprised and disappointed at how few people were interested in an actual compelling story that no one had ever seen before. Instead sadly it seems like the majority of gamers just like to repeat the same “omg wtf lol” kind of thing over and over again. There seems to be a strong strain of whatifism. “Like duuude, what if the lost levels were blah blah blah” that’s fine I suppose but I was very let down at how few people were interested and engaged in finding out these things because I thought since we’d all grown up absorbing this new kind of technology that we’d all also taken and interest in it.

      @@GTV-Japan I'm really glad you covered the actual event, not just the game or why it became Mario USA. Looking at some of the Japanese videos about Yume Kojo on RUclips, it seems like most of the videos have relatively few views. It's pretty strange how such a big event has become so obscure. @@GTV-Japan I would like to say even though I'd be a middle-aged man by that time, I'd still love to visit a big blowout festival about the FUTURE and, more importantly, how that future relates to the kids of today.
      The fact that it was a media house made it super presentable and carnival like. Using Carnival and the various World Expos as a basis for the event was a stroke of genius, and it's sad that the head man couldn't live to see the 2000s and all that groundwork really start to blossom.
