  • This week on Freethought Matters, Annie Laurie Gaylor and Dan Barker speak with Tia Levings, author of the bestselling memoir, “A Well-Trained Wife: My Escape from Christian Patriarchy.” After her harrowing escape from a controlling religious marriage, Tia is using her experience to shine a light on the abuses of fundamentalism and help others who have endured religious trauma. She also talks about how Christian nationalists want to run the country the same way they run their families.

Coming from the Amish, (I’m a male) I know this patriarchal intimately. While not in the submissive role of a woman/wife, we men had to tow the line as well, and if our children got out of line or left the sect, we were censured as failed fathers, and if in the ministry, could be silenced or even removed. And we had the onerous task of most of the corporal punishment meted out to our children, for which I still suffer religious PTSD.
My wife, being raised from childhood in this cult, was not able to follow the path out with me, and thus shunned me. Long story short, I was left alone, a disgraced heretic and branded as an immoral person. But I know it’s doubly hard for a woman and wife to leave. I have to read your book now!

The women in these groups are also encouraged and rewarded to “keep each other in line”, and sometimes the means to do that involve reporting against each other, so you could truly not just have zero allies, but deliberate underminers in your circles.

Wow is shocking but not surprising. After living 73 years l am finally understanding why people have always and l mean always told me l was a strong person (woman). I remember at the age of 13 my father coming into the room to molest me again. I did not care who hear me…l jumped out of bed and screamed at the top of my lung to get out. In that moment l found my voice. I did marry for seven year, but could not stand the institution of marriage and left. I made a great life for myself as l continued to dismiss society restricting norms for women.

100%. Except that it never will because the US is a patriarchal culture and religions of this type are invented by patriarchal cultures to keep women as sexual slaves and beast of burden. What we truly need is an end to patriarchy.

Presuming that within the teenager, young-adult group within this community, there were some young-women that were desired by multiple guys. What happen when a number of guys said to one women “you are my women”? Who got to choose?

9:45 “Nothing more than a submissive wife and mother.”
That sounds like self sabotage type thinking. Teacher, consoler, lover, gardener, artist, baker, barber, kitchen manager, task manager, chief financial officer, coach, small business owner, friend, confidant, sister, aunt, and most of all a good daughter.
      -
11:17 is nuts, that’s just nuts, extremely difficult to believe.
      -
Who hurt this woman so badly? She is ungrateful for her healthy, beautiful, family and having an actual mom&dad to raise her. She fails to even attempt to recognize her own worth.
      -
Alternatively; ‘hey kids, go have seggs with a bunch of people before you settle down and start a family. Or better yet, don’t start a family and try getting a seggs change, I heard that’s a sure fire way to live a happy life.’
      -
Some kids, on our continent, are raised in landfills, scavenging for their daily meals.
It’s not all about you. Be more grateful.

We could educate children so much better that they could be young adults when they are able to make babies, 13,14.
We still treat them as kids when they are physically adults able to make babies. They can be independent instead of rebellious "teenagers "...
