    I was expecting more from this. It’s kind of a stuck in a middle ground where it doesn’t commit to either proper dark humour or complete silliness. Feels safe, which given the cast and crew, is a bit of a shame.

      Agree- reminded me of Logan lucky. Not a drama, not a comedy. In between trying to be both but is neither. Was nowhere near as funny as I expected from coogan and winterbottom.

    I just watched it on Starz - it starts out as a comedy but gets more serious which is great because rich powerful men trying to break down controls that protect the poor is pretty serious - I liked it and I loved the climax

    We need more of this kind of thing. So much of the luxury we have comes from the suffering of others. Clearly just telling people about it doesn't work, making it entertaining might be a way of changing behaviour. I'm a strong supporter of fair trade and I can't think of a single instance in the past 15 years where I have explained about slavery in the chocolate industry and somebody had said that's terrible I won't by chocolate that might involve slavery from now on. And I'm talking about literal child slavery where people are buying and selling children to pick cocao.

      I'd be interested in finding out more about this too Ben, and specifically which companies were involved. I did find out a little about the sugar industry about 20 years ago. I remember Tate & Lyle had come out terribly when looking into their history of sugar plantations, slave labour, abusive policies etc which were still occurring at that time (I don't know if they've improved since then). I'm sure they are not alone in exploitation in the sugar industry. Some of the biggest corporate names (Coca Cola, Nestlé etc) all still have terrible records of greed, exploitation and using political and physical muscle in third world countries to keep profits rolling in.

    Ask yourself why little or no movies have portrayed the gap between Eastern workers and the Western millionaires/billionaires whose products they make. Because cinema, including Sony Pictures who made this movie, is run by the big corporations who use that Eastern labour. In the UK, we have the minimum wage, benefits. Yet we don't use our power to get a fair deal for workers across the world. We should we shaming the likes of Marks and Spencer for producing clothing in Bangladesh for a fraction of the cost. Maybe it helps Bangladesh - but how dare companies pretend to be classically British who are not?

    I don't think the central character is likeable at all. Anyone who is willing to accumulate that much money, by very questionable means, whilst extorting other human beings and anything/everything that gets in his way, I think he's despicable. A good film, which shows that billionaires aren't nice people. No one makes that sort of money by being honest and a 'nice person'.

    • @Picnicl
      @Picnicl 4 года назад +2

      Because Sony's name - and certainly Disney's name - would/should be on the list. Any company that heavily uses Eastern labour is likely to be using very poorly paid labour. Trouble is, these workers / factories produce some good quality stuff but they don't get fairly paid for it.
