The Forgotten Castle: A Story of Legacy and Loss
How does a 13th-century castle, once a historic monument, end up abandoned? Today, we uncover the haunting story of this forgotten masterpiece.
Built by the Valliere Dynasty to protect vital trade routes, the castle stood as a symbol of medieval resilience. Its towering walls, protective moat, and sturdy bridge were a fortress of their time. Over the centuries, it evolved-embracing Renaissance elegance in the 16th century and French architectural charm in the 19th century, transforming into a breathtaking blend of strength and beauty.
But its most poignant chapter belongs to Charlotte, the last known owner. After inheriting the Château, she poured her life into restoring its grandeur, striving to honor her ancestors’ legacy. Villagers remember her tireless dedication, tending to the castle's courtyards and halls. Sadly, her health failed before she could finish her mission. In 2013, the castle was abandoned, leaving behind an unfinished dream and an uncertain future.
Join us as we explore this magnificent relic, uncovering the echoes of its storied past and the dreams of those who fought to save it.

Oddly enough, I keep waiting to hear Danny politely interjecting, "If I may, I'd like to get a closer look at the hand carved details on the front of this cabinet..." Danny then zooms in on the priceless antique. Love your work, Lesley. Always have and always will. The absence of Danny stings a bit. You two were an amazing team! Upward and onward. I hope only the best for you both. Thank you for another fabulous exploration of this amazing French castle.

I loved Danny's comments! That sucks! I've been wondering if Lesley decided Danny challenged him too much on some things and it bothered him? Danny would say, "No, I think that's a ___", you know? I always thought that Lesley was professionally gracious when being corrected by his friend. Oh, I hope that's not the case. Egos are so fragile. I wish Lesley would respond to the question of "WHERE'S DANNY??"

I just died watching the lead-in of the castle from air with my favorite concerto in D (minor? or Major?) Awesome! This is the best-restored mansion I have seen YET! How horrible the lovely woman who gave everything she could for its restoration has passed. If there is any place that you might be able to move into and continue restorations, this one would be it! So much work has already been accomplished so beautifully! My only suggestion for all your great experiences amongst the old world would be to learn more about the artifacts that I so often see the camera scan past while I fall off my chair seeing such beautiful and well-renowned items, that many people simply call chochki's. Lladro, Royal Doultan, LeLeque, fine proclaim that is wafer thin from China, Beleek from Ireland, Waterford crystal, Italian hand blown art glass.... you are walking amongst treasures that I hate to see left behind to ruin. It breaks my heart, but I understand the importance of leaving things as they were left-if not in a little better situation by moving them out of the way of falling tiles to insure their longevity as long as possible. I often wish I was there in person to pick up a broom and sweep up floors, and better preserve what others are trashing. Can you imagine what could be achieved with a group of 50 people with brooms and rags and wheel barrows, cleaning up all the trash and leaving the sparking remains of these places?? I hope you are sending or sharing your videos with reservation groups from the areas where you are touring. I pray more restoration can take place like some you have unveiled!

This castle is absolutely beautiful, I wanted to see more 🙂 I bet the kitchen was in the basement area or maybe in another building entirely. All of the large old clocks were amazing throughout the place. I love how she was renovating the rooms, they looked so nice. I wonder if they did plan for it to be a hotel of some kind. The unfinished paintings did make me a bit sad, but it is good to see them shared for many people to see, that is a cool way to honor the memory of Charlotte. Amazing place, Lesley, thank you 💖💖

I will begin this comment by saying thank you (Lesley and Leslie) for taking us on this grand tour. I can't imagine how seeing this and touching its beauty made you feel. Just an experience of a lifetime. These places seem to somehow carry us back to our own roots. I've watched all of your explorations time and again I share your explorations especially of the castles with many whom I know. My family are great fans. It's my opinion that while you take us on these explorations it brings out the very best of your inner exploration skills. You are fairly glowing with happiness as you introduce the fine details. The art in this place is just beautiful the painting of the pansy flowers just a wonder to my eyes personally and that's just one of my favorite things about this. There are just too many antiquities in this place for me to comment on or else my comment would be longer than it already is. I can see why the owner of this place wanted to restore it while I too am very sad, she didn't get to finish imagining how she felt while she was restoring it must had been the fondest times of her days. Just the beauty she left behind makes it all worthwhile. Now if someone would take notice of this grand castle and finish restoration that was started and first dedicate it to the owner and then put it to good use for museum quality this would be an outcome, we would all want to see happen. Thank you for our tour today and the older gentleman reading the letter, very nice touch. Bravo'

If this place was in my family I would do anything to keep it. It’s beautiful. I would work 10 jobs, hold events. Run a B&B single-handedly. I know the taxes are always a big thing but this is tragic. Totally tragic. 😢

Gracias por mostrar tanta historia , tanta belleza 😢que triste que todas esas antigüedades valiosas se estén perdiendo ! Deberán rescatar el palacio para turismo como un hotel y será utilizado como patrimonio cultural .

Hey dear Lesley The explore is showing all these wonderful and well preserved antiques and the furniture, is incredible to see!
I also admired these very beautiful chandeliers. - Also that amazing private chapel was a real surprise! Every room held new
and fascinating surprises of stunning antiques, - absolutely breathtaking to see!
After my opinion this was certainly one of your very best explores in that stunning castle. I am looking forward to your next explore
videos, dear Lesley! - So I wish you all the best, stay safe, peace and kindest regards from now cold and wintery Switzerland.
