As an Australian who discovered Rodriguez in the early 80s I just assumed he was successful in the US. It is inconceivable to me that such a huge talent was completely overlooked. How is that possible! So glad it all happened for him eventually.
I’m a stand up comic in Rodriguez’s native Detroit and this song inspires me so much he got a major shout in my set tonight. It’s such a wonderful statement on the joy of performing and a really beautiful sentiment about humanity. Cold Fact and Coming From Reality deserve to be canonized alongside The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan and Inside Dave Van Ronk.
That last comment on being part of the songs story is exactly what he does to the listeners " you go on his fantasy trips when you put yourself ' inside his unique storytelling music style " and magical lyrical trips into his world " he is the greatest singer /songwriter " the world has ever had .
Although this isn`t the typical Rodriguez song that most folk would get into, its one of my favorites. You can just imagine the role players doing their thing as they are introduced one by one. A fascinating lot they are - pure genius.
Just discovered this guy. I don't bother comparing him to anyone else, because I just like him for his own sake. Great story, great songs; that's enough.
He really captures the Arlo Guthrie-Bob Dylan folk-country feel with this. Still I'm not saying he's copying them, he captures the entire feeling of that "scene" in an original way; he makes it his own. Beautiful.
Rodriguez is the boss . I am glad I heard his music although it wasn't til the last couple of yrs. I love the music of the 60s and 70s and his songs are as good as anything that came out then. The film was great and his long time fans discovering that he is alive was an amazing story, but his music is the real revelation as far as I'm concerned.
and during the height of the National Party's power. I like to think that his music was been played on army bases all over Angola and South West Africa (Namibia).
Thanks Ryan, it's all rather silly isn't it? Two completely different artists, the only common thread being that their work came out around the same time, (Bob a little earlier). Both artists have given us some truly memorable work, so let's just enjoy it.
Pure genius lyrics....I think lyrically Dylan and Sixto are on the same level, but Sixto is way ahead on the melodic content....I listen to Dylan on occasion, but listen to Sixto every day....Both great poets, One sings, one screams....
Dylan is miles ahead boy. You have no idea. This song doesn't hold a candle to Dylan's most lyrically genius songs of his 60's 70's material. You're exaggerating.
I don't quite understand why we are fighting amongst ourselves. If you listen to Bob Dylan or Rodriguez or both you are enriched by their words and you are on the same side. Stop fighting the easy battle and look at the bigger picture, we have a world to save.I am just glad we have both of them around and Rodriguez is finally being recognised.

@ astroboirap...........I consider myself to be a "True" music fan and have adored Rodriguez for well over 40 years. However, for a "So-called" music fan to state that Dylan (whom I've loved for just as long, longer?) has always been overrated is just wrong. How many 20 year old kids today could pen the likes of "Blowin' in the Wind", one of the most prophetic songs ever written and just as, (if not more so) relevant today? IMHO, most "True music fans" might tend to disagree. Regardless, we can surely enjoy the music without all these comparisons and worse, dismissing the likes of Dylan, whom I believe has rightfully earned his place in music history. As has the amazing Sixto Rodriguez, only he wasn't aware of it.
As an Australian who discovered Rodriguez in the early 80s I just assumed he was successful in the US. It is inconceivable to me that such a huge talent was completely overlooked. How is that possible! So glad it all happened for him eventually.

A Most Disgusting SongI've played every kind of gig
there is to play now.
I've played faggot bars,
hooker bars, motorcycle funerals,
in opera houses, concert halls,
halfway houses.
Well I found that
in all these places that I've played,
all the people that I've played for
are the same people.
So if you'll listen,
maybe you'll see someone
you know in this song.
A most disgusting song.
The local diddy-bop pimp comes in,
acting limp he sits down with a grin
next to a girl that has never been chased.
The bartender wipes a smile off his face.
The delegates cross the floor,
curtsy and promenade through the doors,
and slowly the evening begins.
And there's Jimmy "Bad Luck" Butts
who's just crazy about
them East Lafayette weekend sluts.
Talking is the lawyer in crumpled up shirt,
and everyone's drinking the detergents
that cannot remove their hurts.
While the Mafia provides your drugs,
your government will provide the shrugs,
and your national guard will supply the slugs,
so they sit all satisfied.
And there's old playboy Ralph
who's always been shorter than himself.
And there's a man with his chin in his hand,
who knows more than he'll ever understand.
Yeah, every night it's the same old thing:
Getting high, getting drunk, getting horny,
at the Inn-Between, again.
And there's the bearded schoolboy
with the wooden eyes
who at every scented skirt
whispers up and sighs.
And there's a teacher
that will kiss you in French,
who could never give love,
could only fearfully clench.
Yeah people,
every night it's the same old thing:
Getting pacified, ossified,
affectionate at Mr. Flood's party, again.
And there's the militant
with his store-bought soul.
There's someone here
who's almost a virgin, I've been told.
And there's Linda glass-made
who speaks of the past,
who genuflects, salutes,
signs the cross and stands at half mast
Yeah, they're all here:
The tiny Tims and the Uncle Toms,
redheads, brunettes, brownettes
and the dyed haired blondes,
who talk to dogs, chase broads
and have hopes of being mobbed,
who mislay their dreams
and later claim that they were robbed.
And every night it's going to be the same old thing:
Getting high, getting drunk, getting horny --
Lost, even, at Martha's Vineyard, again.
I like the song
