You know when someone's being lifted or held up and forced to walk? That's what "walking Spanish" is. The song sounds smooth and confident but it's really about an inmate being marched to the electric chair.

One of the things I really love about Tom Waits is the levels in his stories, now I gotta wonder what's wrong with me for not even getting close to it's meaning while listening regularly for 30 years.
