Is charging an electric car REALLY an inconvenience? No. Follow my vlog to Scotland in a Tesla part1

  • Yes this is a Tesla but many of the current breed of new electric cars are similarly capable both in terms of range and charge speed. In fact many actually charge faster than this Tesla !
(This is a 2019 Model S Long Range Dual Motor Raven)
So seriously, hopefully you can see here that charging when on a long road trip really isn’t a bother. You usually need a break anyway, or at least the toilet, and you can do other things whilst charging like each lunch!
So this is just a vlog as I head up to Scotland including Glasgow, Edinburgh and then on to Inverness…. And more … ;-)
Just you wait for part 2 of my Scotland road trip…. Make sure you are subscribed!
What cars charge faster…? We’ll this 2019 Tesla is actually only 150kw capable so here are my thoughts on a few EVs that have higher charger speeds
Tesla Model 3 or Y (standard SR or Long Range)
    Kia EV
    Hyundai Ioniq 5
    BMW i4 incl M50
    VW ID4 / Skoda Enyak
    Porsche Taycan
    Audi Etron GT
    And MANY more!
However what this Tesla lacks in charge speed it makes up for with good efficiency and a large battery for some pretty impressive real world range over 300 miles. In fact I could drive from the South coast to Scotland without even stopping! However, my bladder cannot…
    Thanks for watching

I just did 7500km in just over 3 weeks, going from central Norway to Northamptonshire and back in a Model 3 LR. My experience is that long distance travel is absolutely trivial to do: The car does all the routing for you, and it goes 2.5 to 3 hrs driving at motorway speeds. Then 35-40 mins charge for another 2.5 to 3 hrs driving. That's the time it takes to walk the dog, take a pee and have coffee/sandwich.
Destination charging is the real problem. Away from the Tesla chargers you are beholden to a colourful selection of Apps and weird online payment systems in whatever the local language is, plus the challenge of actually finding chargers near to where you are staying. Even with that though, i've had a 100% success rate getting charged (off-Tesla network) in Sweden, Denmark, Germany and UK. Not a single failure to charge. Only in France have i had a problem: 5 tries and 5 failures....

Just spent a week in Le Touquet, France. All I found were two slow 3kwh chargers in a public car park and one of those was Iced and the other being used. Fortunately I had just sufficient charge to get back to Folkestone on a Tesla Supercharger. The good news is that Tesla will be installing several superchargers in the town later this year.

    • @15bit62
      @15bit62 Год назад

@@fincaman2 That depends on your usage pattern. For us on a long journey it's just fine. By the time everyone has been to the toilet, i've walked the dog, and we've got some food eaten, then 40 mins is actually pretty tight. If you travel alone and pee in a bottle, then i can see it's inconvenient.

Model 3 standard range Glasgow to Kent and back. Cheaper than petrol or diesel and the short breaks to charge on such a long journey made a journey I have done loads of times in ICE cars so much more enjoyable. Doesn’t even need to be the long range version now to be workable.

I just completed a 5,531 mile US road trip in my 2021 Model 3 SR+
Over 13 days of driving (July 10 through July 31, 2022, with time in Kentucky) from Sacramento CA to Louisville KY and back (with numerous side trips), I drove nearly half what I drive in a year.
Shortest daily distance ~300 miles. Longest drive in a day: 650+ miles. Average daily drive ~425 miles.
The final analysis: Wow. This is definitely a road warrior vehicle, despite so-called “conventional wisdom.”
I am still plugging in metrics and numbers, but I estimate about 60 (57 exactly) charging stops. In all those stops, I only had ONE 5 minute wait, at Glenwood Springs, CO. One. For 5 minutes. I’ve waited longer in a grocery store line.
I drove through and charged in major cities (LA, Amarillo, OK City, Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville, St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Salt Lake City) and countless small towns and wide spots in the road. Typically, I was either the only one there or one of two Teslas. My typical stop was 20-25 minutes. Enough time to have a short walk about, use the bathroom, grab a bottle of water, and then get back on the road (the breaks, and auto pilot, assured I’d be rested and relaxed after hours of travel).
I charged on weekdays, weekends, rush hour, nighttime, huge supercharger (50+) or small (4), on the interstate or off some small blue highway… I drove and charged through them all. No cherry picking. (Consider also the local catastrophic climate issues in Kentucky and St. Louis during my trip home, July 26-31.)
      ~60 (57) superchargers. 6,000 (5,531) miles. 13 days of driving. In July 2022. One wait. 5 minutes.
And 5,531 miles of supercharging cost me $600.00. ($522.00, actually.) More than charging at home. But far less than the ICE equivalent (2021 330i, RWD BMW), at ~33 hwy mpg, premium gas. With no maintenance cost other than wear/tear on tires.
I can’t speak for others. But id say that’s a complete success in my book.

Been driving a P85 Model S since 2014 so 8 year 125,000 uk miles and there has hardly ever been an inconvenient moment in London to Edinburgh to local stuff and when you compare the fact that Supercharging is free and at home most of it is done from Solar its a no brainer. It will do 250 miles on a rank full at a push but to be honest at 200 to 220 miles Im due for a stop. So the 2015 design is still one of the best, unreal and the Raven long range just to the next level.

Nice video again Richard, my Kia E-Niro is the closest car I have seen to the Tesla for economy, but the fact the Tesla does that easily at motorway speeds is fantastic. Any EV that can 250 miles real world really does start to be limited by the driver and other passengers.
Food and toilet breaks are in effect free charge times as you are stopping any way. Petrol is worse as you would do your stop, eat then back in car to wait at petrol station pay and then resume your journey having paid a massive amount of money.
Even on a 50kWh charger, I found my E Niro topped up easily and a good amount when stopping for 30-40 mins.

i agree with most of what jonathan taylor says, as a 64kw/h Kona owner, since december, i am keen to do a road trip just for the hell of it, however, my main issue that really nips my plums is.... all the charge place scotland units all have drastically different tarrifs, with alot of them having ludicrous overstay fees on an already short time limit and on a good day i can only max out charge at 77kw, so a 30 min max stay dont cut it for me (some of them are £30 overstay and it varies from there to £1 per minute over and/or £10 overstay) i mean.... are they trying really hard to DISCOURAGE swapping to EV? and the free chargers rarely work....funny that. the dear ones never break

    • @enyaq_gorm
      @enyaq_gorm 2 года назад

That's because the people who own the chargers have different costs (eg they'll have different energy deals and maintenance contracts) so they decide the tariffs. The 30 minutes limit is only in Edinburgh and while I agree it's short it has fixed the problem we had of taxis sitting on the rapids forever trying to get to 100%. So the limit was designed to tackle the local circumstances.

@@enyaq_gorm hi, met you before nr livingston i think. yeah, i agree, but likes of Fort Augustus for example. 45 mins max and £1 per minute overcharge so cant stay too long, but they are burning that candle at the other end too, they all want a connection charge, which discourages short stay. i get your point and im happy its working-(ish) in edinburgh by annoying as many taxi drivers as public now, but my point is. all tesla.... all ionity.... all bp pulse etc...all the same price at every charger and no connection charge?

    • @enyaq_gorm
      @enyaq_gorm 2 года назад

@@Grant.G.Simpson yeah but ionity charge points are all owned by ionity, same with tesla and instavolt so they can set a tariff that covers their costs. If CPS had one tariff then you could have a scenario where the tariff covered the costs of eg Highland Council but not the costs of a business in central Edinburgh with a charger on CPS. You need to allow the charge point owners to ensure they're not working at a loss. But yeah agree on connection charges, they're senseless. Most on CPS use a minimum charge not a connection charge. That way they can ensure their transaction charges etc are covered

What absolutely epic scenery on that last leg up to John O'Groats, by the way... WOW...!
Anyhow, interesting video for sure - but, if I'm honest, nothing I didn't already know...?
Teslas are brilliantly efficient and the Supercharger network is easy to use... everyone knows that...
But, as others have already commented, not everyone can afford a Tesla - new or used.
So, I kinda wish you'd taken the trip in something a little more 'attainable' for potential EV owners - something like a Hyundai Kona or VW iD.3 or similar - plus, then had to use the NON-Tesla public rapid charger network.
What with faulty units and lengthy queues to charge, I think that charger anxiety - rather than range - is fast becoming a more prominent issue for current and prospective EV drivers.
I completely appreciate that your company's main 'fodder' is used Tesla cars, so, yes, of course you'd be wanting to promote the capability of those cars - but your channel audience is WAY broader than just Tesla fan-boys/girls.

We were lucky and got new Model X long range plus just weeks before it got cancelled in europe for good price end 2020. After year and half of driving could still sell it for more than purchase price :) Model X works perfectly for family with three kids

Great video again and I’m looking forward to the record attempt! I am seriously considering a Model S after my SR+. What version gives the best balance of range and price? I don’t think I could afford a 2019 long range (how much would the video one be?) although that would be great and I’m not sure the 75D gives enough range. Is there a happy medium? What would you say the must haves in terms of spec are? I’ve seen loads with enhanced auto pilot and premium connectivity included. Anything else? I may end up doing quite a lot of miles all over the UK for work. Thanks very much 👍🏻

We are taking the P90DL we purchased from you guys to the South of France. Is it worth changing the 21” wheels and tyres to 19” for the trip to get more range and comfort. Sets of 4 used 19” Model S wheels and tyres on eBay for around £900 which we can resell after the trip, but is the hassle of swapping over the wheels twice actually worth it ?

Yes, as long as the 19s fit over the brakes? I know they're not the same but I drove a Model X P100DL on 21s and a Model S on 19s and the difference is a world apart!!

I just completed a 5,531 mile US road trip in my 2021 Model 3 SR+.
Over 13 days of driving (July 10 through July 31, 2022, with time visiting family in Kentucky) from Sacramento CA to Louisville KY and back (with numerous side trips), I drove nearly half what I drive in a year.
One wait. 5 minutes.
And 5,531 miles of supercharging cost me ~$600.00. ($522.00, actually.) More than charging at home. But far less than the ICE equivalent (2021 330i, RWD BMW), at ~$900.00, premium gas. With no maintenance cost other than wear/tear on tires.
I can’t speak for others. But I’d say that’s a complete success in my book.

Flew down to London from Edinburgh at the start of March to buy my Model S long range, first ever EV and first time driving from London back to Scotland. Was initially concerned that the car wouldn't transfer over to my Tesla account quickly enough to allow supercharger use, and it was missing the CCS adapter. I needn't have worried though, Tesla sorted me a CCS adapter to pick up at Heathrow service centre enroute which allowed me to use public rapid chargers if needed, and the car actually rebooted and transferred to my account instantly when I put my details in. it left Heathrow SC with 85% and only wanted to stop once on the journey back to Glasgow, despite there being snow around the lake district, temps were around 0C at many points of the journey. It got me home utterly stress free after 9 hours of travelling (I personally had to stop 3 times) and I wasn't trying to get range at all. Since then it's been to Scottish highlands too, genuinely very impressed with it.

This is exactly why we've ordered a Tesla. Yes they're fast so we won't miss the Porsche macan gts. But it's the unified service experience with the charging network that's golden. Tells you where and when you charge, sorts out the preconditioning, and the billing. Just turn up. Charge fast and go. Brilliant.

What I don't understand is why every EV review tells me that charging/range anxiety is not an issue anymore, and then proceeds to spend the entire video doing calculations and planning where to charge, what chargers to use, will they work, pre-conditioning the battery etc etc. ps. It's just like EV-Man's recent video racing a train in, let me see, oh yes, a Tesla. Much as lots of us would like a Tesla, they are just too expensive.
