Aaaaaand the thumbnail of the year award goes to...
Haha just taking after you buddy!
My charred, black, smoky lungs thank you friend... you're a genius... a f'n GENIUS!
😂 Miss ya dude!
Your a genius, going to get a garage bag right now lol
Anyone else tired of getting dizzy trying to blow up a sleeping pad? I sure am! Luckily I have an easy way of blowing my pads up.
Thank you for making actual, real, useful videos! Much better than "5 things Dan Becker should have bought sooner" followed by "5 things Dan Becker should have never bought." And there are all the same things.
😂 what sucks is those are the videos that grow channels quickly. Sucks for me, but I only put out videos that if watch myself. I'm not an attention seeker. My channel is growing slowly and that's ok with me.
Wow!! Thank you so much!! I was going to give up...I searched “G” and your video popped up!
This is perhaps the only time having Sleep Apnea is advantageous… The CPAP tube fits snugly over the Neoair wing-valve and I can inflate a Regular-Wide xTherm MAX in under a minute 😇
🤣
You just changed my life
Excellent!
Also, love the thumbnail on this video. Definitely a new contact photo for you lol
Great haha!!!
Thanks Frozen, no more dizziness. Take Care
You too Warren
That's a great idea! I have had plans to make a pack liner video for a long time now and maybe it's time. A viewer asked me about it months ago. 😬
I’ve been filling up my air pad like this for years and always wondered why there weren’t many videos about it. Great tip!
I honestly think this tip needs to be a specific part of EVERY review for an air pad.
Agreed! I just assumed it was common knowledge until people started blowing up the comment section about it.
A+ idea. I was amazed at how well my pump sack worked but I am really intrigued with using a pack liner and not having to bring the pump sack along.
I think the liner works better than the pumpsack. You can get it blown up more quickly with practice
What a brilliant always available AhHA idea, great info!
Thank you! Cheers!
So so smart!
Saved me from a couple unnecessary purchases 👍🏼
Glad I could help
I have that same Nemo pad. You can double up the use of the pump sack as a stuff sack for your clothes. And then you don’t have to completely empty your pack each night to get the pack liner out.
By the time I set up camp I don't have anything in my pack anyway so it's all good.
Yeah, as a near 60 year old, I never gave 2 thoughts to it being difficult to blow up a backpacking sleeping pad. But, I do worry about the effects of blowing all that moisture into the pad, so me thinks this will be advantageous.
That's my worry as well.
I've never thought of this before. This is great! Thanks for the tip.
No problem!
Awsome hack. Thanks.
Thank you for sharing this.
My pleasure!
Genius!
great tip 🇩🇰🏕🇩🇰
Thanks! 😃
Human ingenuity bravo
Thanks!
Smart! I was wondering about doing something like this
Awesome tip! Thanks Frozen 👍 👊
No problem 👍
NICE! thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
A truly smart double use of gear. Nice!
Thanks Devin
Yes always best to avoid mold and mildew because you really do not want to suck that crap in as you're trying to blow up your mattress even by mistake
As usual excellent video now it's time for me to go pass out
Yea let's not get sick from camping
Handy information!! Thank you for sharing!🥾🥾⛺️
Any time!
Cool, Bushcraft uses for hikers. Multi use items. Love It.
Bushcraft and UL backpackers unite!
i bought a SGODDE pad its over 4 and a half inch tall mat. it has a built in pump in it. just use your foot to blow it up takes a few mins but its nice.
I use the mini pump because it also speeds up deflation. I sleep on the the Klymet Static V insulated and it has several chambers which are slow to deflate. Plus, Im 68 and not as full of hot air as I used to be ;)
Good point. My xtherm deflates so slow, the tensor is really quick though.
Excellent! Always hated blowing up pads when I was a ground dweller. On car camping I always had an electric pump.
You and me both!
Nice demo thanks for sharing! I've seen this in some of your other videos but this was a good dedicated demo video.
Glad it was helpful!
I got a nemo pump sack and love it. I use it on my thermarest sleeping pads. It fits right onto the old style thermarest valve. But it doesn’t fit the newer wing lock style. I wound up making a wooden adapter to fit the pump sack on my newer thermarest sleeping pads. The pump sack is so small that I don’t even notice it stuffed in the same bag as my sleeping pad. Another option I have thought of is to use the sack that your sleeping bag or quilt is in.
Cool making your own stuff.
This is a cool idea. I have the Nemo (with the pump sack) and the neoair with the valve. Losing the pump sack has been a concern. I’m working on hammock camping at this point and tried to get my short pad in the hammock but even with the dual layer it doesn’t set still. To be fair, I’m real new to the hammock and maybe I don’t need it.
I have the tensor and it came with the sac which works great- but I also have a pack liner so I think I’ll be giving that a try!
I've used the pump sack that came with mine too, but I feel the pack liner is a bit faster. Pump sack is definitely easier though until you get the hang of this method.
I’ve seen you use the bag method in your videos before but haven’t given it a go yet. I’ll definitely give it a try on my next outing. It’s always good to have a piece of gear to do multiple things in your pack!
Totally gotta try it!
Kick ass Tell Sell intro! really nice :)
Thanks
Well, dang...that is pretty cool!!
That's pretty neat, how neat is that!
I use the ExPed Schnozzle which also works on the Nemo Tensor. I recently started using a NeoAir. I am really happy you posted this because I can still use the Schnozzle for it! I had not thought to try this . The pump sack for the Neoair is to small to use as a pack liner. Thanks for the tip.
Love the name Schnozzle!
I have a nemo short mummy a just in case sleeping pad that doesn't take much air even though they do send a pump sack it's really over kill. They tell you to breathe into the sack. It has been working fine for me for about 4 months. Never noticed any mold issues. Now the big Agnes I have is over kill. It also uses a pump sack use of natural air. I've had it almost 6 months. Heavy as heck! But it is a very comfortable sleep
Funny, I never thought to use my bag liner for this! I used a turkey oven bag, cut one corner off, and put a rubberband around it and the nozzle, scooped up air, and pushed it into pad. It worked great on my AT thru hike this year, but this would save me from bringing an extra thing. Thanks!
You and a ton of others didn't think of it either! Figured I'd just throw it out there since it was a game changer for me.
Such a great idea. I’m always concerned about the impact that attaching and detaching the pump sac will have on the integrity of the valve (not very easy on the Nemo Tensor as I really have to push and pull). I imagine this eliminates that potential issue.
I like the under quilt method :p
It's a lot easier right Ian haha! I wanna come back down to your area soon dude!
Great thumbnail Jason I also use a bag like you do it works just fine.
A little humor goes a long way =P
Well that’s a good idea.
Thanks for watching!
What a great and simple idea - thanks! I have a thermarest NeoAir xtherm that came with a pump sack but it became a little bit leaky (the sack, not the pad) and thermarest wasn't in a rush to replace it. I actually bought their pricey little pump for 30 bucks and it works great, taking 3 to 5 minutes to almost totally fill the pad. I don't mind the extra weight. However, I am going to try your method with a garbage bag or trash compactor bag, which I use in my pack anyway. My pad has the newer winglock valve, which is one way so it should be even easier. Thanks again.
Let me know it works out on the new valve.
Hey Frozen!
Hey Alec!
I use the sack that comes with the tensor.
Whatever works!
This was really helpful, I've been using the big agnes pump sack as a dry bag/inflator for years, and ever since switching to the Nemo I've been annoyed that there pump isn't also a dry bag. I'll be happy to try a pack liner instead, so much lighter.
Enjoy!
Huh neat idea! I love using the pump sac that came with my Nemo Tensor, but my xTherm didn't come with a pump sac, I'll definitely be using this method for the xTherm! I never even though about using a packliner 🤯
Totally why I'm making the video. I must stop assuming just because I do something, everyone knows about it. I'm usually the last one to catch on to these things lol.
Nice hack. The pump sack that I use with my pad doubles as a dry bag for extra protection for my clothes. I also have a lightweight battery operated pump for when I'm not overly concerned with pack weight.
Another commenter on this video said they have a USB pump. I'm curious about that one
@@FrozensAdventures it's light weight with many attachment nozzles for different pads. Plus can be used to stoke a fire and has an internal light like a lantern. On Amazon and not expensive.
I use a pump and have for a couple years now. It has been worth the 2 or so ounces to me. It is also great for starting a fire. I just did Oil Creek last week and used the pump to assist twice instead of blowing into the fire. I think next year when I continue my CT section hike I'll just use my nyloflume to save 2 ounces. I didn't have a single campfire this year and guessing there will be a fire ban again anyway.
That's a good use of the pump!
Thanks for this video..done subs.
Thanks and welcome
I’ve done this, it works better than that stupid pump sack I bought, but not quite as well as the battery pump. I don’t mind carrying that because I don’t carry pounds of camera equipment.
I miss the days of not carrying extra pounds of camera equipment. But I do like that I can share my trips with others.
I use the pump sack that came with my Tensor. The only drawback to this method I can see is you have to completely empty the pack liner before you can use it. Not a big deal in good weather, but could be a bit of a pain in the rain.
Haven't had a problem in the rain yet. I can go inside my tent to blow it up.
I apparently like getting light headed after getting to camp so I just blow it up the old fashion way haha. This is a great idea though. A lot more cost and weight effective than a pump and it doesn’t require a separate sack that you wouldn’t otherwise need
Murica!
I actually have a cheapy brand air mat that I got from Amazon, cost me just under 40 bucks, it has a step on or hand press pump, it works great.
Yes I got a Nemo over a year ago for a ridiculous amount of money, it failed me second time out, cheapy, several times out and still going, and for a big guy like me it's extremely comfortable, love it's design, my back loves it lol.
No leaks, airs up easy without breath, pretty darn durable, cheap, it is a bit on heavy side but not bad and the comfort, stability and price far outweighs the weight factor.
That's my solution to most the sleep pad problems I've had lol, hey works for me👍
If it ain't broke don't fix it. Whatever works best for you.
Thanks for making this video. I have learned so much from you...Shug...Sintax77...a few others. I really appreciate these videos...although I am a hammock camper [whenever possible] and dont use a pad much. We have a tent...and pads...but havent used them as yet. [I LOVE my Warbonnet Blackbird XLC!!!!] I dont even sleep well in my bed at home and sleeping on the ground...even with a good pad doesnt sound good to me. I did try the pad in the Blackbird once...just to try it. It was ok but prefer the hammock without it. [COMFY no pressure points!] Would work for insulation if needed! THanks again. Hike On!
Yea sleeping in a hammock with a pad sucks!
nice! i have a usb pump, but if i lose it, i’ve got a better plan b than using my tired lungs. thanks 😊
Can you post what USB pump you use?
I actually used the number of breaths to blow up my ex therm to diagnose an issue. I went to Arizona from 300 feet (missouri) elevation up to 9500 foot elevation (Miller peak AZT) in under 36 hours. Had difficulty with breathing. I used my known breath count of 30 to inflate my xtherm max. That night after descending it took 64 breaths to inflate it. Yup had a lil altitude sickness goin on.
I thrud the AT in 19 with my doggo and orally inflated my xlite the whole way. It’s the only thing I don’t look forward to hiking. Got one of those pumps for weekend trips. But might give this pack liner (dcf) thing a try. Especially for longer hikes.
Thanks for watching and the story. How did the doggo handle the northern states?
@@FrozensAdventures by that point she was a mountian goat. I think only helped her a couple times. The ladder, the notch and a couple spots with the rebar steps. You were quite a ways ahead of us and at a much faster pace. A hell of an experience that’s for sure aye.
So easy! I'm excited to not pass out next time I blow up my mattress 🤣
Yes!!
In addition to potential mold/mildew, I have heard that moisture trapped in the sleeping pad can reduce its insulating ability.
Absolutely
Thanks a lot for the inspiration ! Use this method with my X-lite for a while, but why on earth i have not tried it with my Nemo ? :D
Have fun!
Newer model xtherm has one way valve and nozzle seems bigger than what you have. Not sure if I trust my nylofume liner.. I guess the worst case is blowing it up with your mouth.
That's great to here Bob about the adjustments made to the Xtherm. Great pad but I'd go full non mummy cut next time though, if not just going with the insulated Nemo Tensor.
I have yet to try this as I’m primarily a hammock guy. Shelter camping season is coming up, though, so I’ll be trying this out. I’m curious, though, if those of you who use good old lung power have trouble with your pad getting mushy over time? I’m assuming it’s because the warm air goes cold and looses some of it’s volume. Comments?
Hey David, I see you commenting a lot so thank you for that! That is correct as warm air condenses you'll get some drag and sag on the pad. From my limited tent experience this method won't do that as much.
@@FrozensAdventures I’ve been a long time subscriber. I’ll always be grateful for your beginner hammock camping series. Between you and Shug, I was able to make wise decisions when I bought my first hammock and greatly lessened the learning curve. I recommend that series a lot to people on various hammock forums on Facebook. If you ever come up to Oil Creek, let me know. I’d like to meet you and say hello.
Thanks David. In the spring I'm going to have some big life news and think I am going to be updating both beginner series based on my thru hiking experience.
God, this reminds me how overdue my papshmear is.
Get it!
I just got home from work I'm about ready to pass out
Due to work in my headaches of course and lack of sleep 100 hours every paycheck I need my hammock in the woods
Get some sleep CG!
I gave in and just got a foam pad.
Man I can't sleep on that!
Algorithm comment…. nice one, Frozen!
Many thanks!
just got back from a camping trip where i woke up on a deflated "REI FLASH", seriously the worst sleep trying to sleep on the hard ground ugh, im seriously debating bringing two pads with me next time. nothing worse than bad sleep. just had to vent lol
I'm always worried about that since moving to the ground from a hammock on half my trips. Do you carry a patch kit?
@@FrozensAdventures yes i do, but it must have been a pin hole or two, i wasnt able to identify it on the trail, ive already patched it once
That's the worst when you gotta resort to the bathtub to find the hole.
Battery pump for me
Got the therm-a-rest pump or something different?
@@FrozensAdventures therma-a-rest pump, it works well for me
Pillowpadpump
From Exped? Is it comfy?
Have u ever had anything that scared you happen on any of your backpacking trips?
Some scary weather and the moon one night I thought was trying to kill us. No big deal =P
No sleeping pads in a hammock 😅
I mean you can, but it's totally not as comfortable as an underquilt
My pad said ''blow me'', I said, ''I'm not that way inclined!'' 🤣
Even sleeping pads needs some R&R!
Algorithm
💥 thanks!
