No... You get max points if you: 1. Walk on the screen, and wait for the Giant to fall asleep (7 points) 2. Walk off the screen, then come back, and kill the Giant with the sling (2 points) 3. Take the chest from the dead Giant (8 points) 7 + 2 + 8 = 17 points!
The funny thing about the bucket is that you can do it three ways. You can, 1. do it the way you did it, 2. jump in the bucket, and it will drop to the bottom. You jump out, and then cut the bucket off while you're swimming. Or you can 3. lower the bucket down into the well, then climb down the rope, fall off, and then cut the bucket off while you're swimming.
I know this is long after the fact, but there is a way to reliably climb the beanstalk. The trick is to make sure that your *feet* stay on the beanstalk, just as you have watch your feet when climbing the oak tree or going down the stairs. The position of your hands doesn't matter at all.

I played this as a kid and thought it was fun. I was able to solve all but one puzzle in Kings Quest 1 without help... If I remember correctly, I didn't see the mushroom that makes you small. It's just a small colored square somewhere with other small squares. I played every Kings Quest. Anyhow, I tried playing these again as an adult... it wasn't fun. The constant saving and loading because it's so easy to die. However, I shared the game with some friends ages 19-35. They love it. They like the combination of typing commands and moving around.
My sister and I played this back in the day and I had no idea there was a save function! WHAT?! We had a really thick guidebook tho so we were able to beat it once without dying.
If you have the Magic Shield already in your possession, the giant won't screw with you... When the giant come running over to you, the on screen message will read, "You are fortunate that you have the magic shield or this giant would cause problems for you." Over a minute later, he'll fall asleep anyway, and you'll get 7 points added to you score... You'll another 8 point for taking the chest
You have to be able to climb the rope because you can kill the dragon by throwing the dagger at it. When the dragon dies, it doesn't move the boulder for you.
I had this game when I was 12 I remember not understanding what type of commands I could type in or what direction to follow? Still don’t, I don’t remember reading the instructions either... How did you know what to do.
Also if you get the key instead of the beans and go through the door, you get mugged on the platform between staircases and a treasure is stolen. if you have any of the three "goal" treasures when you're mugged, the thief will steal one and you can't finish the game
Ahh, but if you want to play the original, play the CGA version without the crocodiles in the moat! The original played the sound from the internal speaker!
OH MY GOD. I was talking about this game to a friend last night. I had a very vivid memory of playing this as a kid but I thought I had made it up because no one knew what I was talking about! Wasn't there a way that the witch turned you into a gingerbread man or am I misremembering?
Hi, I know this comment is a year old, but thought I'd respond anyway :) I think you only turn into a gingerbread man in the higher-resolution EGA version (which comes with the collection from Sierra) and in the AGD remake, just not in this version.
Hmmm, that is really interesting. I wasn't sure and just tested this part, and you are right, it looks like if you let the giant fall asleep, leave, come back, kill giant with sling, then take chest, you end up with 2 additional points. So it looks like the new max is 161/158 as opposed to 159/158. I haven't finished the game yet to test...but very interesting. I guess this changes the 100% speedrun.
@@JSano19 I tried a free online emulator, and I can confirm it.... 161/158! (I posted the link to the emulator in a separate comment, hope you don't mind)... btw... If you already possess the shield before climbing the beanstalk, the Giant won't mess with you... The comment reads, "You are fortunate that you have the magic shield or this giant would cause problems for you." You can then just wait him out or type in "Fast" (to hurry things up), and he'll fall asleep just the same.
I don't know how ANYONE would get that Rumpelstiltskin riddle on their own... How would you ever know to do the backwards alphabet thing? Most people would have just spelled his name backwards...
One possibility (and it's probably not the reason here) is that software houses sometimes put extremely difficult puzzles in the game and they put the solution in the game manual. If you'd only have a pirated copy, you'd get stuck. (Remember you couldn't simply look at a walk-through online.)

There's nothing like these old adventure games. Progressing in them felt like finding an easter-egg in a modern game.

You can use the invisibility ring to avoid the giant. He won't see you and so will fall asleep without trying to chase you.

If you swim with the goat, the goat drowns and you can't get past the troll and you're stuck as well....
I think, however, you can still pay the troll, so that wouldn't be a game ender.
I always kill the dragon with the dagger and then climb out with the rope. I didn't know about the water.

That's true, but I don't think that was the case in this instance. KQ1 came out before they started doing copy protection with manuals.
