  • This week we we're driving the T90EV for our daily runabout. A fully electric pick-up truck packing an 88.6kWh battery, an available range of 220 miles and over 200bhp. Its SAIC's first attempt so lets see how they get on.

Yikes. On a farm, that motor is going to get ripped off in under a week. It'll be fine for road use, but off road you're going to need a solid metal shield under that. Apart from that it would make a decent farm truck.

except its 2wd only and can't tow. Unlikely it will ever see a farm.

It looks like a good start. Gives the impression that they’ve rushed it to market and a few additional finishing touches would have made this much more desirable. Good first effort

Indicators on the correct side (taking back control?) 😊
Update…..your free hand is in the middle for LHD or RHD and all Australian manufacturered cars have it on the outside.
We used to downshift and indicate simultaneously and your right hand on the door side can both steer, indicate and select from those buttons thus leaving your left hand to deal with ‘drinks lollies chocolates’ etc. LHD has the same convenience.
Germans couldn’t be bothered to adapt to what you once had waaay back in the 50s…..right?.

I think Australia is one of the biggest markets for utes in the world and we have the indicator switch on the right. Looks like it could be aimed at the Australian, New Zealand, African markets.

@@MarthaMansbridge I live here and and you're talking shit. There's LDV's, GWM's, even Mahindra utes and other brands I don't know the names of. Some people aren't fashion victims buying the most expensive US piles of shit they can get. Most people buy based on practical and economical assessments. Especially when their livelihood depends on it. Most Australian's prefer Toyota's for this reason but not everyone can afford them and with the price of fuel being so volatile I know that I'm not the only one to be looking for an electric alternative.

It’s the norm to have them on the right in far eastern markets. Until recently Japanese & Korean vehicles had them on the right when brought into the UK.

The range is surprisingly good for what must be barn door type aerodynamics and how many people actually need to go offroad in their normal working lives (as opposed to leisure activities destroying country tracks ?). A proper set of tyres should be all most need. The lack of underside protection should help the aftermarket sector thrive. Just far too big for most peoples needs but a clear shot at the heart of the US automotive sector. Great review.

Great review I actually saw one of these in the supermarket carpark in Billingham and did a double take. It had a green UK number plate on a pickup truck I thought someone was being a bit cheeky but no its a real BEV. Not sure its worth having a pickup just for the grocery run but our UK roads are a bit rough, lol.

ISTR that British cars even in the seventies (way too far back for James of course 🤣) had the indicator stalk on the right. The location of fuel filler caps / flaps was another thing.
These days we have the LHD adoption for almost all vehicle functions because RHD is no longer the dominat market norm.

2 speakers, no speed control, can’t go offroad, underpowered, wrong column stalks, rock hard seat cushions, no locking tailgate - to attract buyers, it must be way more efficient than an ICE version? We needed to hear Kate’s take on this one. Thanks, James.

About the only good thing on what looks like an early model is the range of this thing, which is decent. I guess they had to launch the truck to get the name out there, but no 4WD (essential for farm and construction work), and that exposed rear motor, and the lack of even cruise control on a £50k truck means you may as well buy a van. For comparison, a top of the range SsangYong Musso (which has won a ton of awards) is just over £41k, and that is absolutely loaded with tech and off-road ability. Even the £36k version has heated & cooled front seats. I like the idea of an electric truck, but with 4WD and any kind of decent spec, this will likely by a £55k - £60k truck and I don't get who would buy that. It's why the Mercedes X-class truck failed. No-one really wants an expensive pick-up truck in this country.

Very much a 2nd generation EV in a 3rd Gen world. Add to that it's overpriced.
BYD have a Pickup in production soon, that will be coming to Australia, so it will be RHD and I expect that to be cheaper than this Maxus POS.
