8:21 -- Did you see that checkmate coming? I read A mate or near mate in that position once the rook was taken, then the queen comes in with check followed by the other rook.
I remember this game! Afterwards Garry was asked about his rook sac on move 23 and he said he'd calculated a long line a couple move earlier and saw the rook sac was a possibility. Reviewing the game the commentators saw that Garry spent like 22+ minutes on move 21, before the knight trade, and less than 5 minutes on move 23 when he sac'd the rook. People were plugging that into the weak 1999 engines (Fritz, HIARCS) and letting it run for hours and even days only to confirm it was good, what Garry had determined in 22 mins 2 moves earlier. What a game.
A Brazilian Grandmaster called Rafael Leitão was there when that game happened and he says that after it was over everybody was like "yeah, probably the greatest game ever played"
Next time you should 100% text Garry to ask about these games. Hopefully he won't recognize you from when you were 8 years old at the master class with him.

Man just wow. These old grandmasters was best ever. New ones looking to engines to find a move. That is why I think Kasparov and Fisher were kings of the chess. They played top engine moves when there was no engines. Kasparov did a move even engines struggling to find. What a player.
That is classic Kasparov - able to unleash layers upon layers of attack despite seemingly leaving himself vulnerable to a strong counter attack. Once he made that first large piece sacrifice, you were normally in enormous trouble, even if you could defend like Karpov (which you could not).
Apparently, this Kasparov guy really did his best to be featured in Gotham's video. Ok jokes aside, this game just blew my mind. How beautiful chess is!
@Loren Swan kid levy was once in a chess camp with a group of kids and garry was teaching them chess but levy was too toxic and they kicked him out I believe
I watched the game 3 years ago. I played the game myself more than 50 times on my own board. I tried many times to save Topalov. I failed. each and every variation master wins after the legendary rook move.
As your average intermediate schmuck on the board, the most fascinating thing to me about top level players is their ability to play out so many complex sequences in their minds while keeping everything organized and seeing the best move for each player in each position.

I remember we analyzed this game in the chess club a shortly after it was played. The crazy thing is Kasparov had a good position and could have just played normal moves, but he went for this rook sacrifice. He must have seen it all in advance or at least calculated deep enough that he saw some sort of advantage in all continuations.
I impressed myself with this video, I looked at the game and guessed alot of the big moves before they were made but of course I didn't know why they looked good lol
Garry probably the best ever in planning/foresight. He just breaks you down inch by inch, piece by piece. Bobby probably the best ever in IMMEDIATE board sight. At a glance, he could identify all the best moves.
It's very telling of how phenomenal a teacher Levy is that when I first started watching his videos I could guess these moves like %10 of the time. Now only a few months later and I'm getting most of the concepts and ideas before he even explains them! Thank you for all your hard work Levy!
Watching this in 2022, we must give credit to Topalov, for playing an amazing game. Although Kasparov obliterated him, he still saw Garry's ideas. I get it, it's much easier when you actually have the beginning move played, but come on, he played well.
This is great, nog only the game but also your analysis! Very clear yet thorough, not just namong moves or drawing lines but actually explain them on an understandable level. Great job

The one important thing you're seriously missing in this video is that for arguably the greatest chess match ever two players are needed and without the incredible defence of Topalov, this wouldn't be the Garry Kasparov's best ever game, so you should have commented some more about that and not just putting 100% of the emphasis on the incredible offence of Kasparov...
