kasparov: unfortunately for you, history will not see it that way
I remember this game! Afterwards Garry was asked about his rook sac on move 23 and he said he'd calculated a long line a couple move earlier and saw the rook sac was a possibility. Reviewing the game the commentators saw that Garry spent like 22+ minutes on move 21, before the knight trade, and less than 5 minutes on move 23 when he sac'd the rook. People were plugging that into the weak 1999 engines (Fritz, HIARCS) and letting it run for hours and even days only to confirm it was good, what Garry had determined in 22 mins 2 moves earlier. What a game.
Wow!
Garry the goat
its amazing how we look at the brilliance of Kasparov, but the calculations of Topalov to not get mated so many different ways is equally impressive.
Not equally, but still impressive yes
Levi: Pawns can't go back.

Next time you should 100% text Garry to ask about these games. Hopefully he won't recognize you from when you were 8 years old at the master class with him.
I doubt he has Garrys number lol
I appreciate Kasparov's foresight to realise he needed to produce a masterpiece worthy of becoming a GothamChess video 22 years down the line.
That is definitely the furthest anyone has ever calculated in chess!
"The king is suffocated by his own queen"
I feel like theres some boomer joke to be made here but i can't find it.
I mean, this assumes that the king in question wouldn't want to die by queen-suffocation.
It would probably be something along the lines of, "Huh, guess even royalty have the same problems with their wives."

But why
believe me Kasparov used to be as dangerous as wolverine to sit across the board
I love how chess miniatures got mixed with meme culture

You don't have to imagine it because it's the thumbnail.
13:09 I’m literally dying rn
Man just wow. These old grandmasters was best ever. New ones looking to engines to find a move. That is why I think Kasparov and Fisher were kings of the chess. They played top engine moves when there was no engines. Kasparov did a move even engines struggling to find. What a player.
That is classic Kasparov - able to unleash layers upon layers of attack despite seemingly leaving himself vulnerable to a strong counter attack. Once he made that first large piece sacrifice, you were normally in enormous trouble, even if you could defend like Karpov (which you could not).
Props to Topalov for hanging in this game. True level of the best of the best shows only if they have a worthy opposition.
Can we appreciate Levy doing all his videos in 1 take with almost no editing

I've seen this game a dozen times, analyzed by different people. But you REALLY brought out the excitement and brilliance of it! Great job.
Apparently, this Kasparov guy really did his best to be featured in Gotham's video. Ok jokes aside, this game just blew my mind. How beautiful chess is!
Just admire how sweet levy is even after such hectic streaming schedule

This video is amazing and probably one of my favorite Gotham Chess videos, from the commentary referencing baseball, VAR and that bishop line (we love our smoke breaks here) to the match itself, absolutely insane play from Garry Kasparov
Gotham Chess's immortal video.
As your average intermediate schmuck on the board, the most fascinating thing to me about top level players is their ability to play out so many complex sequences in their minds while keeping everything organized and seeing the best move for each player in each position.
love these vids Levy. you keep making and i'll keep watching. and never stop letting us "try" to find the correct move haha. my favorite part.
Garry may have seen that the rook was hanging, but can he see why kids love the taste of Cinnamon Toast Crunch?
"Plays Qa8 for aesthetic value"😂😂😂
Thank you ! These chess moves were amazing, and show the depth of calculations by both players, with Kasparov of course leading again,

The comedic commentary Levy makes on these videos always make my day. 😂
Honestly, the mated from behind bit, the ending up in a GothamChess video bit, the ad revenue joke, the Garry goes in a guess the elo bit, if that match was Garry's immortal game thien this might just be a big contender for Levy's immortal video.

This video was so entertaining and funny. I’ve never been disappointed on a Gothamchess video ong
no matter how many times I watch that game it never gets old. OMG
I remember we analyzed this game in the chess club a shortly after it was played. The crazy thing is Kasparov had a good position and could have just played normal moves, but he went for this rook sacrifice. He must have seen it all in advance or at least calculated deep enough that he saw some sort of advantage in all continuations.
"you'll lose your neopets account" 😂😂
I've heard that chess used to be played very differently than it is today. Would you be able to create a video that showcases a chess champion from different eras and how they compare in terms of what the whole idea behind chess theory was then versus what it is today?
I watched the game 3 years ago. I played the game myself more than 50 times on my own board. I tried many times to save Topalov. I failed. each and every variation master wins after the legendary rook move.
The best analysis I've seen on this famous game. Great job, Levy.
Best example of computational creativity.

For some reason I found like all the tactics in that endgame, from c3+ to Bf1 to Rd7 to b4 and yeah god knows what. All the so to speak "only moves". I am quite proud of this achievement for being only rated 1300. I also saw the Re7+ move that was played early in the game.
It's very telling of how phenomenal a teacher Levy is that when I first started watching his videos I could guess these moves like %10 of the time. Now only a few months later and I'm getting most of the concepts and ideas before he even explains them! Thank you for all your hard work Levy!
