India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar slammed Pakistan at the United Nations General Assembly. In his speech, he said, "Pakistan's cross-border terrorism will never succeed. We are determined not to be left behind." He added, "A war in Ukraine is well into its third year and the conflict in Gaza is acquiring wider ramifications."

In what do you want Bharat to be a US "ally"? As a European, I associate the term "ally" with conflict or competition. Why should the US seek conflict and competition in Asia? Why not reach out a hand to 1.4B people in Bharat, 1.4B people in China and all the billions of people across Eurasia, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania? Why does there have to be an "ally" rather than one of many "friends" and "partners"? I would value a deeper European bond with Bharat myself but see the people of Bharat as our friends, not our "allies". Let's bridge the continents, let's include all players, let's sit down at a table, respect each other's reasonable interests, and use our power in smart, constructive ways - together instead of in against each other. I believe that the term "ally" is not going to stand the test of time. We see economic and geopolitical developments around the world of a kind that will turn things upside down in some regards. And it's up to us to deal with it now in a wise, human and confident fashion instead of ignoring the truth or hiding away.

What a brilliant speech! I cannot disagree with ANY points raised in the first several minutes. Where things began to go awry was when Indian policies for the support of women, farmers and youth were described which have been promulgated by mouth and mooted in Parliament but have yet to have a significant impact on the poverty-stricken millions of the Indian poor due to structural resistance from the established male-dominated powers in the Indian hierarchy.
