Jonghyun compared himself to the moon once and he had a song called that. To Shawols he’s the moon and Onew is the sun. I know it’s probably an overused song to put at the beginning, but for us it works and symbolizes him. It makes it even more meaningful to us.

Btw- in case you didn't know - the proceeds from the orchestral version will go to the SHINY Foundation, which was started by Jonghyun's mother to help youth and artists with their mental health and artistic development.
Jonghyuns voice itself is a whole artwork and in his songs he adds these little touches that make his songs that much SPECIAL. I'm glad they still touch our hearts.
I absolutely loved the orchestra version. Probably one of my favorite things SM has done. Also, Horns + Piano = instant win.
Ok I agree with what they said about pop musicians shoehorning classical pieces into their songs but in this case I think it makes more sense. The moon has been a very important image representing the relationship between Shawols and Jonghyun for many years and especially now after his death. He has himself used this image in songs he wrote for us. Hearing this piece brought back feelings I thought I had buried, I cried so hard. Yes, Claire de lune is overused, no it is not included in this version as a gimmick. I actually think it was better that it was only at the start and not referenced again later because if it was then it would definitely feel like they were trying to force it into Jonghyun's song.
It is a gimmick because it's only there in the beginning and doesn't serve as anything (e.g. motif or structural movement) but a sampling. See another example of sampling in the first bar of ITNW (SNSD), which borrows from Dvorak's Symphony No. 9. That and CdL in this arrangement serves a similar purpose: a mere reference.
Loved your discussion, especially becuase you had such different opinions. Personnally, Jonghyun's version feels a lot more emotional, but the orchestra version feels somehow more positive or uplifiting, so it is actually an easier listen for me.
Agreed. I could listen to the orchestra version anytime honestly but for the original version, I guess I can only listen to it when I think I'm ready. Jonghyun's voice is just so beautiful and holds so many emotions.
Coz actually the lyrics is about 2 people meet up and being eacother companion after a long day. Its an uplifting song like a hug when i first hear it. But become.sentimental and little bit feel sad after we lost him.. i love how the orchestra bring the mood like it used to be and the way jong want/ meant it i guess

Thats why i am thankful for the orchestra bring back the mood and make this song an uplift mood that needed.. although still the emotion that jong voice bring always be the BEST

The thing that makes me teary eyed in this version is the written lyrics in the MV it just... seeing and reading the lyrics while the music is, idk how to say it, the music is expressing the words for youp(??) Just touches me in so many ways and Jonghyuns voice automatically replays and that makes me cry

I'm not a musician. I agree with Kevin though. I expected to be blown away but it just can't match Jonghyun's epic emotions in the song. Not saying it's badly done. It was alright. Just didn't meet my expectation.
Kevin is more logical and objective in his reaction while Umu talked about her feelings and understood what they were trying to do with the video . I think both views are important especially in art

Yes, I’m replying to myself. Heh. Now that I’m a little less emotional and so thinking a little more - I actually think that Kevin hit the nail on the head for why he wasn’t completely satisfied with this arrangement; Jonghyun’s decisions on instrumentation, on pacing, on texture and timbre are not things that just anyone can make. I don’t know that the person who created this arrangement had the ear to interpret the song in the way that we needed. I’m still going to love this, because honestly I believe that this is the sort of thing JH would have loved too. I will love it because I can imagine him having done it, but I will also think that perhaps the thing that’s missing is Johnhyun. Not his voice, but his actual musical presence.
But like I said I’m super emotional so I also might just be trippin on nostalgia and Brooklyn salsa music from the car parked across the street. Heh.

I always cry when I listen to the orchestra version, especially the oboe part. But a lot of my tears I think come from missing Jonghyun and thinking about his reaction to his song being played so beautifully by an orchestra. But the original version is still my favourite, it both melancholic and warm for me
i agree with a lot of the commenters - i love the orchestral version & find it easier to listen to than the original. JJong's song was from him to us, but this version sort of feels like it's from us to him. I like listening to them back to back because it feels like an affirming extension of what he we was saying. It's just nice seeing so many musicians get together in tribute to him, turning a song that was so raw & intimate into something richer & uplifting.
Ok but as a shawol I just want you to know that clair de lune was very special and actually meaningful for us bc Jonghyun for is our moon, we use it in reference of him, we talk about the phases of the moon as his moods, there’s a HUGE link between him, us and the moon, so yeah it’s not a meaningless inclusion
After hearing this version, I found my self crying. I can't stop my tears even if I want to. It seemed like I can't control my emotions properly. This specific crying felt different from what I've experienced before. It wasn't forced or like forcing myself to cry. And what makes me feel chills is that it was all because of the power of music. Man, I'm thankful to be a musician.
If I may (and I am sure there is someone in the comment also pointed it), despite why the arranger choose the Claire de Lune, as a shawol/fan of Jonghyun, putting this song at the intro means a lot. We refer to Jonghyun as the moon. And Jonghyun also uses a lot of moon symbols/phrases in his song (Selene 6.23, Moon, also big moon at Shinin' MV). it doesn't hurt also that end of the day = moon, but when watching the video I feel like the song is what accompany you all night (at the beginning it feels like dusk, however the same picture at the end somehow for me looks like dawn.
There's actually an explanation why the arranger placed Clair de lune there. She said it in an interview.
@@ohnimevol-9480 i can't find the video anymore; it's probably on twitter or another social media platform. it wasn't really anything very deep. it was just that for her she was reminded of Debussy's work while thinking of End of A Day.
so, i'm literally crying. Everything about this song is literally sentimental and tearjerker. I even cried while painting one of the scene in the MV. Ah the tears won't stapph....

I think I would find this version easier to listen (emotionally), if I didn't know the context behind it. But as a tribute, it's harder to listen to than the original, just because Jonghyun's voice is there and he is such a comfort, that I really do listen to it regularly at the 'end of my days.'

Thank you for this reaction video! this orchestra version is beautiful, but I also agree with Kevin’s note about how the human voice has more depth than any instrument and it just isn’t the same as the original. Jonghyun’s voice is so unique on its own that it just made the song that much more special. Regardless I loved it.
I love this version because it gives new light to Jonghyun's creation. But yes, no one can convey emotion like Jonghyun's heavenly voice.
When I saw Umu tearing up, I remembered the first time I heard this rendition. How his music will always be a comfort. And how Kevin said, it'll bring you comfort and will make you feel immersed in an atmosphere of reflection and melancholy.

clair de lune is pretty significant because jonghyun is the moon. He loved the moon and after his passing shawols and SHINee find comfort in the moon as almost a representation of jonghyun himself. Obviously you wouldn't know that without being a fan so no hate for that, but it definitely has more significance than just representing the "end of the day"
For him I listened to him while looking at the moon!

Jonghyun's voice on this song always have those feelings when you are trying to be fine and respect yourself for being who you are eventhough in the end its still hard. I always got teary whenever i hear this song but this orchestra ver, i think they are trying to make the song more uplifting and im thankful for that a lot. Both trying to deliver the message if you did well and eventhough it didn't ended well but you are good because you already try your best. Im sooo happy that SM decide to do a collab with orchestra and hope they will continue this with more songs

ooooh! The clarinet had me in tears. I asked my daughter to play her clarinet for me at the end of every day, and I would lie down,close my eyes and relish the moment. This version took me back to how wonderful those moments were,and this version made me feel so wistful. This was so lovely. Where did you find this version? I loved the reference to Claire de Lune....because it set the mood,like lighting the room for an experience,but yes it could have referenced the piece once again.The oboe ,not like a singer,but darn...my son played the oboe...it moved me...big time! I can enjoy each version in a different way. Kevin,please write your OWN orchestral version for us....your ideas sound wonderful!
Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra has been releasing SM music as station songs, mostly for a charity album, I believe. The lyrics are embedded in this video. If you watch the signs on the streets, the side of the building and the writing as the elevator descends, you'll see them. Instead of only arranging Jonghyun's musical score, they also gave us his words. An extra element to enjoy and remember the genius of his work.

Thanks for getting around to this reaction. I was waiting for it. I understand Kevin’s critiques in terms of style choices but I loved it. Since I don’t look at it from a technical/classically trained perspective, I thought it beautifully reflected the melancholy and sentimental feelings that listening to the song gives me.

My daughter,at 5 years old had a computer game of The Magic Flute that she loved.On the computer,she would identify different instruments and mixed up melodies.I treated her to a family version of The Magic Flute (shorter) at the San Francisco Opera House(it was $20 for her box seat).She kicked off her shoes,dragged her chair to the edge of the balcony and was entranced ,mesmerized ,and I watched her 15 year old brother,with his eyes closed the whole time.At intermission,I asked him why.HE said,with my eyes closed, I can focus on the clarinet(his instrument.) Then he said ,"My friend's mom is a clarinetist here." Peter and the Wolf is great to listen to with kids and so is The Magic Flute.

I totally get where Umu is coming from and I can see everything she was sharing- but I agree SO hard with Kevin on this one. I don’t have the technical musical background that you guys do but I did grow up in a home where classical music was constantly on the radio, etc., so I have a strong affinity for the sound and emotions of classical music. But with this classical version of Jonghyun’s song I just felt like the deep emotional punch of the emotion in his vocals was not matched in the instruments. I wanted to love this version so much but it left me feeling flat, and I was so conflicted over that disappointment that I felt. Classical music is more powerful than this version of End of a Day represents it to be!
For anyone who didn’t know, the proceeds from this orchestral version are all going to his family run Shiny Foundation to support struggling young musicians!

I had a very "weird" reaction when I heard it for the first time. I was very put off at first... but by the end I was crying. I thought the beginning was a bust... towards the end it becomes better... but overall it just made me realize Jonghyun is not there. Seriously, the absence of his voice was too big. I still listen to it from time to time, it makes me emotional, unlike the original which comforts me.
Btw also fans Relate so much Jonghyun with moon, so... yea
