Hey Marco, i have a suggestion! When uploading these videos, you could append "feat. [Guest's name]" at the end of the title! This would have multiple benefits, it would help people who are associated with your guests, like friends and family, find these videos, and it would help people who are interested in finding an episode with a specific guest again to do so. Yes, completely true! It's absurd, but in the 2000's, women couldn't be recognized as gamers even if they were literally playing video games in front of you. I remember the ludicrous arguments about "fake gamer girls" all the way into the 2010's, so it's nice that such a view is hopefully dying off and becoming relegated to the manosphere grifters!
@@blakespeers2456 Yeah, lotta people from that time sorta matured outta that mindset. Think we now just appreciate common interest among each other, regardless where we hail from.
Hi! Mags here, I enjoyed this SO SO much, I had to hold in my excitement from being able to show my mom all of the video game world culture. (PS, the camera cut it off, but I also do have a TOTK poster. ❤)
I hope you'll really give the Final Fantasy games a try (and that you'll enjoy them, of course). They do get memed on a lot ("why do I hear boss music", etc) but they've got some really good games amongst them. (Marco mentioned FFVI which, respite being from 1994, is still regarded as one of the best games of the JRPG genre. The music is, of course, also amazing.) And the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, which is 2/3rds released by now, is so-far a masterpiece in its own right. Here's to hoping Silksong will get released soon, aye? ^^
That'd be great. She's honestly a precious gem, even participating with the Team Fortress 2 voice actors to be the Administrator in their recent banger of a song: The Sandvich blues.
I saw the thumbnail and was like "OMG IS THAT CHRISTINE????!!!!" and go SOOOO excited! I remember first hearing her iirc singing "O Don Fatale" in a concert back in Chicago, and immediately fell in love with her artistry; so cool to see this!
Ludwig is absolutely peak video game music design. So insanely intricate throughout the song, and that second phase transition (in the song and in game lol) never gets old. Saved me from having more of a headache trying to kill this guy for the first time in ng+.
Last week I went to the - Paris - Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth concert. I brought my father who just LOVES classical music, it's what he has been listening to since he was young, probably because it's what his father was listening to as well ? He was surprised when he saw Orchestre Colonne would be playing with a choir (apparently the best or 2nd best french private orchestra ? Why would an orchestra with such a reputation play this ?). He also already knew and played To Zanarkand and he already heard about Nobuo Uematsu from me, but he never got deeper than that. He loved the concert, and was surprised when some cosplayer showed up. But then people went "Ooooh !" when they announced what the next piece would be and there was a standing ovation at the end, he was not expecting people to be this invested in classical music! He probably didn't think modern classical music could be this loved by young people. After that he asked me questions about the franchise, I think he might finally get into it x) I'm glad people are acknowledging how powerful the emotions and memories that are tied to this music are. By the way the concert was full, all seating taken, the room had 3.5k seats. The 2nd representation that night was full as well, so 7k+ people experienced live FF7 music that day !
That's awesome. The closest my parents ever got was my mother chancing upon a Hans Zimmer Song from Call of Duty on the local "Culture" Radio. By no means lesser, but Zimmer's work on CoD is very much programmatic.
I don’t comment a lot, but I watch all of your videos and this is one of my favorite guests you’ve ever had on! You can tell how genuinely inspired Christine was when you showed her music like she was taking notes and everything, love her! Also, the whole generational perspective with her daughter is really cool to see!
On the topic of songs becoming memes, I find that it’s often because that specific piece is so good at evoking certain kinds of emotions from viewers. Bonus points if it can do it in less time than a Vine used to take. One Winged Angel’s opening is so iconic and alarming, it became the sound of sudden panic for a generation of gamers. The Only Thing They Fear is You is great at communicating “I’m locking/locked the fuck in” as quickly and viscerally as possible.
I don't recall who said it, but one thing that sticks with me when it comes to music is something along the lines of "If you have the right piece of music with the right scene, it will stick with you forever." Which given that I'd heard of the sentiment shortly after the torture scene in Reservoir Dogs to the tune of "Stuck In The Middle With You", all I can say is yup. And it's a sentiment that works for tv, film and games.
it's not relay that songs become memes, and more that songs where always memes (the actual definition as coined by Dawkins that modern memology comes from), they are both just something containing information. a meme is just something, that contains information, most of the time, an idea. And a song has always contained information and/or an idea. That one part of a song becomes a more modern meme is then obvious, as some parts of a song, becomes a compressed expression containing the full song, becoming an idea of the song it represents, and then translates the connotation of the song in the public consciousness
"You know one winged angel... you know we should play that... actually I am playing that now" between the funny story and parental interaction before that and this free form fun "we'll do it live" vibe was so funny to me.
I like what you said at 10:30 about the debate of "the music should be listened to on its own for a pure reaction" vs the opposite, because I think what it comes down to is that the music of an opera, an anime, a video game are all designed to be listened to with the context of the scene they are in. The mediums of visual arts, music, and writing come together to give us these emotions they are trying to convey, so really listening to a piece without its context is like only having one ingredient thats suppose to go into a whole dish.
Hey, Marco only played single ace combat song this time. He's weaning himself off the addiction slowly but surely. 🤣 This was a great video, the guests were a lot of fun. If they join again, gotta do the opera scene and dancing mad, they're so good.
About Bloodborne score being difficult to do live, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra did a show that was aired on swedish national television called "Score - Videogame music with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra" where they included a Bloodborne medley piece with vocals by Sabina Zweiacker. It is the only piece of music that has ever triggered my fight or flight reflex into 100% flight mode. You can find it here on youtube.
Love the input from these two! Speaking of Nobou Uematsu, I actually got to see him live two weeks ago, he was visiting Norway and had a 2.5 hour long concert with conTIKI, even got him to sign an FFVII shirt! 😁
Unsung War is such an Unsung song from the series. The story of Raz Griz and the way this song weaves into the story of Ace Combat 5 immediately puts me in tears😊
One of my favorite episodes! It was really fun to hear the perspectives of essentially three different generations on the same musical piece. I think it would be really cool to do more of this kinda stuff. I know you can't do XIV on every video, it would get old fast, but I can't help but hope for some Soken bangers XD
This is a great video. Mom has a great energy, and she is very passionate about her craft. With the daughter's resonating views and Marko's takes it weaves such a great picture of generational journey through music that makes me think how much music really empowers out life. No matter the time, no matter the place, no matter the context.
I just realized that one of the reasons I love this channel is that I love seeing Opera singers bop to Chainsaw and lawnmower based electronic metal. (Doom) As well as Keygen Church, which is not really that far off... (Ultrakill)
2:01:30 When you consider Ludwig's connection the Executioners in the story, and thus to Alfred's violent attack on the undead queen, the image Christine suggests of a Tudor queen being marched to her execution is absolutely perfect.
i love when two people with a common interest introduce someone to that interest, whether i'm watching it happen or doing the introducing. there's a mischief in conspiring to make the introduction in front of the person who understands most of the words but not how they fit together. i've experienced this quite a bit with Warframe recently and it's just a lot of fun
It's fun to watch Marco get a little verklempt whenever "Unsung War" comes on. But that's what the music in the Ace Combat series does - it sticks with you. It's such a completely unique experience that it's hard to find it in any other game.
I've never been a huge fan of the rendition of One Winged Angel you showed. Its not bad, but not having the higher tones for the choir really takes out a lot of unsettling feelings from the track, in addition to the whole Jenova is his "mother" and a space calamity set on destroying the world.
That's the first time I've heard this version, and it does feel somewhat lacking. For example, it doesn't have the descending bass notes right after the "Sephiroth!" lines starting at 43:58 (probably by a tuba), I had to play them in my head. But I guess it's understandable Marco doesn't want to play the same couple of versions over and over in every such video.
Agreed. Im not as intimately familiar with the piece as most other people in the comments here, but even i noticed this version seemed to be noticeably less impactfull than the original or other renditions.
Yeah this was a really weird choice, if he wanted to use a live performance version we have Distant Worlds right there to pull from who do this so much more justice. The choir is so weak and amateurish in this version...
I know The Only Thing They Fear Is You is your go-to Mick Gordon track, and for very, VERY good reason. But you should totally check out his rendition of The Instinct from Killer Instinct. It’s SO good.
I've heard one winged angel a number of times on this channel, but I really appreciated the orchestral piece you chose for this one. I hadn't heard it before, and it felt quite fresh to listen to. Loved their rendition of it.
I've never heard "Our First Singing" before. That is absolutely gorgeous. It feels like it encompasses the entire hero's journey in a single piece. There are moments that feel mysterious, moments of tension that feel very unsettled, moments that sound heroic and moments that feel like discovery. There's a sense of wonder and beauty mixed with some slight danger, but nothing that you can't deal with and ultimate come out on top of. Its practically brimming with optimism without feeling bombastic. There's a certain peacefulness through the whole piece.
I love when you include Astalgia of Phantasm in these, it's such an epic, powerful showstopper that never fails to disappoint. Just amazing music whether you understand what's happening in the video game or not.
He's wearing a Warframe shirt! Speaking of which, I wish he'd shown them the Duviri Paradox or even Tenebre Rosso Sangue. Other than that though, great video as always, Marco!
I was not prepared for Unsung War and the sheer onslaught of emotion it was gonna throw my way. It's funny, because the short intro part is somewhat generic in comparison, which didn't bother me but also, like, didn't immediately blow me away. When it Started, though? My god. Sobbing mess within 2.5 seconds. I love when songs do this to me. When they sweep you away and all you can do is just ride out the emotional wave and let it take you wherever it goes. And goddammit this piece took me places. Beautiful. Absolutely stunning. Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention 🙏
Cara Mia always makes me cry. It's simplistic but it's, you know; it's the feeling of a mother saying "my daughter, you are an adult now and I need to pass you on to your own self, out to the world where I cant protect you or be with you anymore, and I love you".
Man, you should've shown them GRIS Pt.2. GRIS is about a woman's grief after losing her mother and in the climax of the game where GRIS Pt.2 plays is when she is finally, through all the grief, is able to hear her mother's voice again and it helps her pick up all her pieces and move on. It would've been interesting to show that to these two.
Christine is great. Maybe I'll see her at the Houston opera if she's still doing that? And the way she looked at her daughter when she was making points was pure pride, it was adorable.
Around 10:00, this is a great way of putting it. It feels like you get exponentially more out of a soundtrack when you have multiple kinds of context to understand it through, one being the association with the given scene or subject within the game or series or movie, the other being your personal memories, experiences or thoughts. Sometimes one overrides the other, sometimes they can act in harmony and elevate the experience in a unique way. I honestly struggle to find access to regular music, be it pop, rock, classical, whatever, as I am so used to that emotional and experiential pathway to music. The exceptions of non-sountrack music that I do like are largely tracks and/or bands that I have grown accustomed to in my childhood. Even my current love for folk and regional music was first born through experiencing them via soundtracks, such as the skandinavian folk culture through the series Vikings or something like the anime film Akira for other tribal soundscapes.
I've listened to Astalgia of Phantasm a LOT thanks to your channel (And I played a bit of lost ark and did get to that boss) and I keep finding myself saying "Holy shit it's just a SINGLE BOSS YOU DIDN'T HAVE TO GO THIS HARD". That song is so extra. I love it. Her reaction at 32:30 to it going "OH MY GOD I WANNA SING THAT" was so genuine as well, I totally get that. Love these videos Marco, keep em up!
Honestly, I think Cara Mia Addio is one of the earliest pieces of music from a video game that made me feel something (other than twilight princess Midna's Lament ofc). Hearing it again was indescribably nostalgic
This is crazy 1:40:10 (I don't know almost anything about creating music) but since the first time I started listening Metal like at 12, I've always think Opera and Classical music Metal were related and hearing this so much years later it made me smile a lot 🥹
Jessica Curry (composer for So Let Us Melt) is such an amazing creator. Please show some of your guests something from the Everybody's Gone to the Rapture soundtrack, also done by Ms. Curry, it's another amazing soundtrack!
1:10:35 there's this track I think a lot of people know, called Resonance by HOME, I can without a doubt say it's one of the most nostalgic sounding pieces of music ever
I'd never seen that video of One-Winged Angel before! What an incredible performance! The musicians look SO into it, I love the energy of the whole thing. My favorite version of the song is still the Advent Children one with the electric guitar, but this is amazing on its own AND really well-mixed. It's less overwhelming and you can hear every individual instrument doing its part. So awesome!
whenever marco starts to explain to the guests about these complicated scene made me feel like im in his shoes lmao. Explaining video game scenarios to people is so complicated to me cus im not sure if they would understand two huge rocks and a hand of god claps in the air making the energy in the atmosphere fizzle out of existence etc.
i like that marco is pretty much introducing every other song with their story and how they were made and then he comes to Doom Soundtrack and says 'here's the only thing they fear is you I let the song speak to itself'
Ahahaha! is there a another Christine part coming in the future? This was so fun to watch. I'd love to see her hear some of the other legendary video game music. Slave Knight Gael, Tenebre Rosso Sangue, and others. I would love to hear her thoughts and see her reaction.
It's sad that there is still gate keeping in gaming to such a degree that Max feels she can't just say 'yes, I'm a gamer' but qualifies it. Max, you have game art on your walls, you play games, you are a gamer :)
Absolutely wild. Not only did my friend just recommend me your channel, my wife is literally going to see Christine perform tonight. This is the perfect cross section of all my interests. I am also a tenor and getting ready for my first time performing Olim Lacus colueram
"Zwillingstürme im Herbst" is "Twin-Towers in Autumn". It's not "Zwilling-Stürme", which would be "Twin(singular)-Storms", makes no sense grammatically. Awesome video! Really enjoying the energy Miss Goeke is bringing in!
Came here 3 weeks later to tell you that whatever you're doing is working. This video finally motivated me to look up what Carmina Burana actually is (never heard about it before) and long story short about a week ago me and my friend went to see it live in a local conservatory. Both of us are young adults and like video games and we enjoyed the performance a lot! So thank you for introducing us to great music and for all you hard work

Yay! I finally know like 3, closer to 2, of the songs.
VINDICATION!!!
I've heard one winged angel a number of times on this channel, but I really appreciated the orchestral piece you chose for this one. I hadn't heard it before, and it felt quite fresh to listen to. Loved their rendition of it.
If you wanna hear a fun rendition of One winged Angel, someone on RUclips here did a cover in the style of Doom. It's a good one imo
It felt so great seeing how young all those musicians are! It's so cool.
Those two are awesome!! Hope to see them in another video in the future!
Christine and Max were a great duo! And you have an amazing selection of music as well!
This was a great one! Cool hearing three different generations' takes on the same tune.
You HAVE to show the One Winged Angel where Uematsu plays the guitar/piano with his band.
It never gets old watching someone react to Unsung War. It's feeds my soul sustenance
Christine is great. Maybe I'll see her at the Houston opera if she's still doing that? And the way she looked at her daughter when she was making points was pure pride, it was adorable.
In this day and age, its difficult to be creative in classical music work, but I'm very happy that the game is a vessel for this.
encore! encore! bring them back and show them more
would love for them to experience "scars of time"
Der Hex Konig is one of my absolute favorite pieces of music, and hearing it never fails to get me pumped.
Great long video! So much in this one! Love Christine and her insights, as well as Mags with context and genuine intuition. Love it!
Thank you!!! Glad you enjoyed it too
Maybe my favorite episode ever. Wonderful guests and selections. Thanks for everyone’s time and insights!
Please do another one with this duo, I'd love to see their energy again this was fun and a bit teary eyed to hear.
That moment when she immidiately realizes what song it is based on and just bops along was fantastic.
Honestly, I think Cara Mia Addio is one of the earliest pieces of music from a video game that made me feel something (other than twilight princess Midna's Lament ofc). Hearing it again was indescribably nostalgic
16:28 "I dont think i really care"
Marco : nods
Marco's thoughts : So you have chosen death
For the Astalgia of Phantasm one, I always love watching the conductor. He’s having so much fun being there at the front
Me when Ludwig plays for the 19738475th time already: 🕺🕺🕺💯💯
This was a fun little collab that just made me smile the whole time. Props to music and fun, simple familial bonding.
I really loved Christine's vibes! Thx for the reactión and the video!
da gusto escuchar a estas personas, saludos desde Argentina.
I've seen Christine Goerke at Lyric Opera in Chicago several times, and she is as good as it gets for strong operatic soprano parts like Wagner.
oh hey. I sang in the Carmina Burana in a 200 man choir in college. Awesome experience.
This was great! Would be awesome to have them both back again
the moment you pick up a second game you're a gamer.
don’t know if this was directed at me (mags), but thank you if it was ❤
@@cornyhaul5781 you're welcome
Ah, Lappy. To this day I am happy that their music managed to become official. I imagine Lappy was in the clouds when it happened.
I love how everybody is chill for like 90% of the video then basically starts headbanging once we get to Doom
i like that marco is pretty much introducing every other song with their story and how they were made and then he comes to Doom Soundtrack and says 'here's the only thing they fear is you I let the song speak to itself'
This was so much fun! Definitely would love more guest content with them 🙏
I'm always curious to see what songs you choose for these videos. It's always a solid lineup.
Another fantastic episode and a really long one, which is great!
Awesome vod as always ! I love how we all pull that one face everytime we hear something so nastily good it's that "hngh this hits just right".
Ahahaha! is there a another Christine part coming in the future? This was so fun to watch. I'd love to see her hear some of the other legendary video game music.
Slave Knight Gael, Tenebre Rosso Sangue, and others. I would love to hear her thoughts and see her reaction.
It's sad that there is still gate keeping in gaming to such a degree that Max feels she can't just say 'yes, I'm a gamer' but qualifies it. Max, you have game art on your walls, you play games, you are a gamer :)
Anyone with cat ear headphones is a gamer, I don't make the rules.
I’m getting better lol!! It’s the whole stigma of women in the gaming space that keeps me from saying “oh, yes I am a gamer.”
Absolutely wild. Not only did my friend just recommend me your channel, my wife is literally going to see Christine perform tonight. This is the perfect cross section of all my interests. I am also a tenor and getting ready for my first time performing Olim Lacus colueram
That’s awesome!!!!! Hi!
So thank you for introducing us to great music and for all you hard work
that's really incredible. thank you so MUCH for telling me. I'm really excited and happy that you took a chance on something new. and thank you for leaving this comment to let me know. It means a lot.
1:41:01 laughs in Nikke: “I feel so alive” as the gods damned Cash Shop theme. Yeah, they got the memo. Get people in the mood to spend money and they will
"I feel so alive" is one of my favorites xD
Awesome video and a perfect music selection. You could have included Vordt of the Boreal Valley as a meme, I am sure that Max would have burst into laughter 😆
