Last night was chaos but what ur saying is spot on. Iv done this with my insomnia problem. Hi Dawn. Sending you love as you practice allowing and even welcoming the anxiety to be there. It will fade on its own in its own time. It is only there to protect you. Think of those body sensations as an over reactive friend. They calm down eventually. ❤️

I know all the online therapists try but every now and then, God gives one person a special ability to change lives. You have that in the kindness in your tone and the amount of valuable free videos not dominated my marketing. Its a hard balance to achieve. In my 20s I had a phobia and suicidal depression. I had a therapist who saved my life and as I spoke, the tears would run down her cheeks although she was very professional. Years ago I read a book by Claire Weekes called "Peace From Nervous Suffering". She had the same main technique, accept whatever is happening to you and keep moving forward. You explain things differently from her, and you probably have a lot more studies to back it up. But she discovered the paradoxical key to recovery through her work as a doctor taking care of patients. I know it works, and I'm glad it is still being used, though it certainly takes a lot of courage.
Yes, Claire Weekes was decades ahead of the research that proved what she taught. We now can actually see images of new neuropathways in the brain make new connections when people accept and allow what ever happens to happen. I have read her book Agoraphobia and she was spot on.
I’m having pretty rough panic and anxiety this evening after a moderate drinking binge. Ideally I wouldn’t have had as much to drink, that said your advice to remain non reactive is so key when 😮bodily symptoms have flared up. Welcoming the symptoms and using a paradoxical approach is so important. Not fun, but much more manageable and intelligent than trying to push scary/but not harmful symptoms away. That just doesn’t work. Next up drinking less and adapting a better relationship with alcohol

Hi Cassandra. I am sorry you have that sensation. Our head and bodies can create all kinds of sensations. We have to what ourselves from interpreting those sensations as negative or dangerous. That kind of interpretation only causes an anxiety response when we notice the sensation and that can make it worse. Since you have had it for a long time, perhaps interpreting it as “oh well, there you are again.” Just that little difference of accepting it as normal will help to calm your mind.

Thank you Paige. I am still struggling each day but i'm seeing a ERP focused therapist for my OCD and health anxiety. Even while having some health problems, i keep on trying to optimize sleep and diet and striking a balance between challenging myself and resting. Also, practicing self-compassion/gratitude is a big one for me because i often feel like a burden to others. One moment at a time!
It sounds to me like you are moving in a good direction and doing everything that you can to feel better. Good for you. And I love that you are balancing between challenging yourself and giving yourself compassion. I am so proud of you. That’s amazing progress. There are certain medical tests that might cause us anxiety, but we have a willingness to do them because they help us to maintain our health. Be proud of yourself to be willing to do things that make you uncomfortable because you care about your health. Allow the anxiety to come along if it wishes, but move forward doing what is important to do. ❤️
dear Paige, your videos help me so much, aftter the pandemic, I'm having a terrible anxiety when having to go out, and I get obssessed with things, I don't know what sickness or disorder I have because when I don't know where I have smthing or I can't find it even if I know it's at home, smthing trivial or important, I get dizzy and a terrible pain in my stomach. I start looking like crazy. If I'm not home I have this pain in.my stomach until I arrive home and can find it, I can't get rid of my anxiety and I feeling so sick. If I make a mistake when buying smthing or forget to buy smthing...anything... I cry, and I desperately try to find a solution, but the suffering is unbearable, I lay in bed in the dark feeling sick and maybe take some benzos. I suffered from depression and anxiety before the pandemic, but never never so badly. I was able to go out without fear and be normal and rational, I'm so desperate. Your videos really help me; you are my angel and my therapist. I'm doing a workbook for my depression and anxiety that helps...but right now I'm lost because I don't know my diagnosis to know how to handle this. I would apreciate so much your opinion, and try to watch the videos that can help and work on your pdfs. I really hope you can help me. Thanks so much.
Hi Anne. First, I am sorry that you are suffering with this. I have a good idea what is going on, but of course I cannot diagnose on RUclips without knowing your full history. What I am sharing is a possibility and you will have to consider that it is a general opinion but without a complete history. It sounds like you are experiencing a form of OCD that goes along with feeling like things are complete. I see this often with people that have a subtype of perfection ocd. It doesn’t mean that you want all things to be perfect…just certain things. It is your brain’s attempt to feel certain and have control…at least of those certain things that come to mind. It is also related to having a “just right” feeling, feeling of completion and certainty. The treatment that is recommended is called ERP and in ERP we basically do the opposite of what ocd wants us to do. We don’t try to find those things to get comfort. We instead challenge ourselves to not fix things and stay with the discomfort. I offer a course on exactly how to do this if you ever want more help with it. It does indeed cause a cycle of misery if you continue to try to satisfy the ocd. You can find information on my course here: www.paigepradko.ocd.

Eventhough I was exhausted last night I hardly slept and had nightmares just because I made a bad choice at shopping smthing which is not so expensive...I keep getting obssessd with thoughts like Ishould have not...Also taking decisions is awful...What you suggest: to do the opposite seems really painful and really don't know how to do it. I found you about 18 months and listening to you helped me greatly. Today I started getting that familiar feeling of panic again simply because of a twinge I am having in my abdomen. It just bugged me at first but by the time it had twinged a few more times the anxiety ramped up to heart pounding and tremorous and teariness. So I tuned in to this video to hear you again and have another way to deal with this latest attack of anxiety. I’ve heard that beta blockers work well for anxiety but I’m not sure I want to resort to more medication, I already take anti depressants. Thanks for your help ❤️
Hi Tess. Remember that it is your reaction to the anxiety symptoms that can make it worse. Anxiety is normal…those twinges and all of those physical symptoms of panic are all normal. Let the whoosh wave of anxiety float over you and do nothing…it will pass as long as you don’t do anything to try to avoid it. It is uncomfortable, but not dangerous in any way. ❤️

I'm a phlebotomist, for 12 years now. Geriatrics to Pediatrics. In 2020 I developed debilitating anxiety. My doctor explained it was probably me feeling like my life was out of control, so my brain no longer felt it was in control of my body. I go through very bad periods of anxiety and panic where I have to take benzos to control it. At this point I know it's my fear of having anxiety and shaking and embarrassing myself drawing someones blood. I can not seem to shake it. I go months being fine, and all of a sudden I have a trigger that sends me into a spiral. I'm so sick of feeling this way. Your video helped me get through a tough situation today. But how do I just welcome this anxiety when I know I need my hands to be steady to draw someones blood? Any advice would be welcome. I'm at my witts end and hope you can help. ❤
Hi Julia. I am so sorry that you go through this. I am wondering what you believe your core fear is under that anxiety. Do you think it is feeling judged by the person you are taking blood from? It sounds like it is a fear of embarrassment or of being negatively judged versus the fear of anxiety coming up when you are taking their blood, or it could be both. Allowing the anxiety to come and go is important. Also, in some way confronting the embarrassment of shaking in front of someone when taking their blood. You could do exposures on that fear but recording your worst fears about that situation and habituating to the fear, or you could think of what you might say to the person if this does happen. Once we fully address the fear, the anxiety will die down on its own.

Hello Australia! My number one tip is to learn to be non reactive to anxiety regardless of the level and discomfort. Because reacting to anxiety symptoms with concern, avoidance and techniques to reduce the anxiety will only send alarming messages to the brain and continue to activate the fight or flight response. @@PaigePradkoTherapy It was, i am struggling with how to stop feeling anxious about my adult children's lives, i seem to not want anything bad to ever happen to them so i'm constantly warning them of various dangers in iife, but they don't want that, i know they don't... but something in me compels me It's wearing me out, i need to let go, not of them, but of my anxious feelings and to stop 'advising ' them.
@@twish1999, I have 2 adult sons and can relate to wanting the best for our kids and not wanting them to experience emotional or physical pain. But, have you thought of how you handled challenges in your life and if anyone could have stopped your challenges in life. With pain comes growth. My sons have made mistakes, felt pain and yet those very things I wanted them to avoid were the same things that helped them mature and grow. If we constantly give our kids warnings, we are sending them the message that we don’t think they can handle it. Instead, give them the message that, “Yes, life has its ups and downs. You will go through tough challenges. But, I know that you are strong enough to make it through. We all make mistakes, but thank goodness, we learn from them.” Give them the gift that you believe in their ability to cope with whatever life throws at them. I understand the worry. Place your hand on your heart and tell yourself that they will be okay. Even though your worry is a sign that you care, you cannot protect them from life. You are willing to step back and trust that they will learn and grow stronger through whatever life throws their way. ❤️

Hello! This was an excellent video! Thank you very very much! I do have a question though about the I.AM method and especially about identifying the thoughts and cognitive defusion. For someone who struggles with OCD, the identifying part and the cognitive defusion couldnt act like mental compulsions? Like reassurance that these obsessions are just thoughts? Can you explain this to me? How can we use congitive defusion and identifying and labeling thoughts without using them as mental compulsions?
That is a great question. In cognitive defusion techniques, like labeling your thought as an ocd thought, you are separating the ocd thought from you. Many people have a difficult time separating their ocd thoughts which live in their imagination from their “real self” thoughts. But, you are correct in that it could become a mental compulsion if the person uses it lower anxiety in the moment and continues to engage with their thoughts. I like people to catch themselves as soon as they realize that they are having an intrusive thought and labeling the thought seems like a good way to jump off and interrupt that thought and allowing it to float there in the background and them shifting focus in the moment and move on. When you really think about it…when you notice yourself having an intrusive thought…just noticing it is in a way, labeling it. It is just noticing what is happening and reminding yourself to not engage and refocus your attention elsewhere.
Hi Rebecca. Yes, that is a common yet frustrating anxiety symptom. I want to encourage you to keep working on leaving the house daily and acting “as if” the dizziness doesn’t bother you or concern you (sending those unconcerned messages to the brain). Eventually, your brain will learn that it does not have to activate the fight or flight response. It is a learning process that takes time, commitment and patience…as you surely already know. Hang in there, be compassionate to yourself and keep up the good work. ❤️

I fall asleep just fine as I journal and meditate before bed but I wake up a lot of times during the nights with fast heart beats and racing thoughts. What should I do in the situations please? Also during the day I just keep thinking/ engaging with the thoughts. I have mediated and done journaling for 2 months. Have not seen a huge change but tiny bit yes :D Would be appreciated to hear from you
Hi Koko. Yes, rumination can certainly keep you up, as can surges in adrenaline if your brain believes you are concerned. @@kokoslifediary , moving through your day, and being present in the moment, focusing on what you are “doing, seeing, hearing, etc.” will be most helpful. Being stuck in your mind, ruminating and analyzing your thoughts will only create more cycles of worry and rumination. Sometimes your brain can react with adrenaline when you are relaxed or even sleeping if it has learned that heart rate changes are something to be concerned about. Hi Steven. In the case that something needs attention in your life, sit down and create a plan of recovery. It might involve how you might earn money, save, cut back and whatever it takes to get you on the road to feeling more financially secure. This is a process of course and it will take time, but your brain will calm down when it knows that you have a plan to move forward. Think of this relationship you were in as a wake up call that you have to take care of you.
I haven't felt safe for years now, like that feeling when you can just let go, feel relief, be relaxed... I'm in constant vigilance, like a kind of tension or suspense in my body and mind. It's taking a toll on my energy to say the least, and I slowly get more and more stress symptoms like stomach issues, muscle fatigue etc. I feel like I've tried everything, like I need that call "Hi it's the police again, we were mistaken, no one was injured" except there is no situation and no "call" that can come... Just feeling unsafe in my body and mind all the time. How the 💐🙃💢🎷 do I snap out of it???
I am so sorry. Yes, you are describing a feeling of being in fight or flight. Basically, your brain believes that you are in danger. This will be a process for you to work on teaching your brain that you are safe. Doing things like walking in nature, or walking with a friend or petting animals, laughing, playing, dancing, having eye contact with people, practicing yoga, meditation, exercise, good nutrition, good sleep habits, diaphragmatic breathing…all of these things practiced regularly and not in response to anxiety in the moment can help your brain learn that you are safe. Things like worrying, ruminating, avoiding things, reacting to your anxiety, worrying about your anxiety and trying to calm down in the moment you are anxious…all of these things give your brain the message that you are in danger. This is a process that will take time. I hope you feel better.

I am now becoming aware of my mistakes that I always used to do. But still, I have a question, I have pure O, and I always struggle with wrong thoughts all the time. I mean, I know some people who are just silly, I just totally don't want to even think about them. But, still I'm always obsessed with those images, and it mostly happens at my workplace. My brain compells me to Perform rituals, and if I don't do so, then thought such as my workplace will be snatched from me, or something wrong could happen, comes to my mind. So, please tell me what am I missing? And what must I do to cope with these thoughts? And one more. Do our thoughts really affect our physical reality? Share your opinion on this. Hello. I am glad that you are aware that it is OCD, Pure O. It sounds like you are doing these rituals because you are afraid that something bad will happen if you don’t. This is a core fear of uncertainty…you are uncertain if something bad will happen and therefore are afraid to take the chance of not doing the compulsion. First, you are not alone. This is very common yet, it causes suffering. You are living in your imagination and making decisions based on your imagination and not reality. Can you stop yourself from doing the rituals? Can you stop part of the ritual? Can you change the rituals? It is best to stop…but if you cannot seem to do that, then stop part of it, or change it until you have the commitment to stop all of it. I have been passing out from panic attacks stress etc my whole life, it feels like. First time i had just turned 12. That day. And it was our last night at camp. We were all crying as we sang in chapel. It was hot and there were prolly 100 candles lit. Next thing i knew I was waking in infirmary. Had to miss last nite w my bunk mates. 😔 Has happened nearly dz times since. They are terribly terrifying.

Certain situations in life that causes us difficulties is what said to be problems? But if a person has any 'Mental' difficulty like depression can it still be considered as a 'problem' for that person? I mean if a person has difficulties in mind and not in life, can it be still considered as a problem?. I have have a wired doubt: Suppose, if a person had an accident but he is happy even after that accident for no reason so will that accident still be a 'problem' for that guy?

We don’t even diagnose someone who meets criteria for a mental disorder unless they describe it as significantly affecting their functioning and quality of life. 😊
Anxiety is the worst. It makes you imagine all types of negative scenarios and outcomes about a certain situation or event. But mostly once you do or go through whatever you're nervous about, it turns out to be not nearly as bad as you imagined it to be. But I dont know how to calm the anxiety before the event, that's the hard part for me.
Hey Paige. I get a “pit” in my stomach a lot when I get anxious so I’m constantly checking to see if I have the pit to see if I am still anxious or getting anxious. What can I do about it?
Hi Larry. It sounds like you are experiencing somatic or awareness of bodily sensations. This is a normal experience, but can lead to a cycle of anxiety if you are purposely checking to see if it is happening and adding worried thoughts to the sensation. I have somatic awareness of my breathing at times and have learned how to treat it quite well. First, I suggest changing the message you give yourself about the pit in your stomach. Say something like, “Oh there you are. Welcome. Feel free to stay as long as you would like little pit…I am not concerned about you at all…please stay as long as you wish…I am just going to go about my day.” Second, do the best you can at not mentally checking to see if it is there…because of course it will be there if you go checking on it. Act “as if” you are not concerned at all…even if you are feeling anxious. Third, you could use my I. A.M. method as I discuss in my brain hack video here: ruclips.net/video/9nEC8yIgFKg/видео.html And finally, your last step is to try to have the pit in your stomach happen on purpose. This is an exposure exercise. By trying to make it happen on purpose, you are sending the message to your brain that this sensation is nothing at all to worry about. And then, of course, do nothing…no response to the sensation or anxiety (that is the response prevention part). 😊
My heart PVCs always scare the hell out of me. I've had them since I was a kid, but they are definitely worse since I started having anxiety disorder. Sometimes they are non existent, sometimes they happen often. I am finally off my SSRIs, but I am still on Klonopin. I will taper off that eventually, but it got so bad, so I had to have a little extra help
It sounds like you are managing your thoughts better and not leaping into catastrophic thinking about your PVC’s. If you have had them since you were a kid, they may just come and go as part of what is normal, albeit uncomfortable, for you.
@@PaigePradkoTherapy I keep latching on to that way of thinking. I just also had a bad cold, and my mind was overly anxious and sensitive after. I think that may have a lot to do with it. I also get a lot of PVCs if I travel or am somewhere new

Hi Jen. I do not want to give medical advice or judge anyone’s treatment as you have a whole history that I am unaware. I am typically going to support allowing your brain to learn that you are not worried about anxiety and bodily sensations. However, an occasional use of your medication does not concern me. People tend to get into a more difficult situation when they are using something like a benzodiazepine daily and become dependent on those medications. Without knowing more, I think you are fine in what you are describing. ☺️
Hi Jeremy. It sounds like you have anticipatory anxiety and maybe a bit of magical thinking going on. Magical thinking is also like superstitious thinking.
What if “panic attacks” or “anxiety attacks” suddenly come on during peaceful / ordinary moments? What if the physical symptoms are not brought on by the emotion of anxiety? For example, chatting at work and suddenly feeling lightheaded or faint, then heart pounding.

@@JohnD0129 I gave up vigorous exercise like power-walking, because it seemed to throw me into these attacks about 10-15 minutes AFTER I had finished. I also keep a benzodiazepine like Ativan with me, to ensure the episode only lasts 15-20 minutes and does not persist for hours. I hope to start a thyroid supplement soon to see if that may help too. Try your best to allow the anxiety and the panic and stop yourself from doing things to try to stop it in the moment. Your brain learns through these experiences that you are safe. If you do something in an effort to calm yourself, you prolong your panic and anxiety because your brain stays on high alert. Let the anxiety or panic wash over you…surrender to it. It is not dangerous only uncomfortable. It will not last more than a few minutes instead of hours if you do nothing but surrender to it.
Hello Paige, I struggle badly with sexually-themed OCD and I hope you can help me, because I am not able to access in person treatment right now. I am aware of what OCD therapy looks like, and I know I need to learn to tolerate the thoughts in order to recover. The only thing that sort of keeps me from trying therapy is a fear of these thoughts changing who I am. Can thoughts influence my gender or sexual orientation (who I feel attraction to)?

Unfortunately, RUclips does not understand that sexual-themed OCD is OCD and not something that needs monitoring or shame and we should be able to discuss it. Rose, therapy from an ocd specialist will be helpful for you. But, unfortunately, if the therapist is not trained in OCD, you could be misunderstood by the therapist. Just had covid.. have had chest pain shortness of breath seen in er for shortness of breath all ok... I still feel like I'm going to have a heart attack my biggest fear... heart doc said your anxiety is going to end up killing you bc I'm anxious 24 7 everyday 11 years 😭😭😭😭
Hi Melissa. I am so sorry you had Covid and are having some lingering symptoms. Anxiety can really exacerbate those symptoms, so you need to learn what to do. I specialize in treating people with health anxiety. It can really be horrible for many and there are specific techniques that can really calm it down. I have received so many people asking for help with this that I felt compelled to make my therapy techniques and treatment available in a course for those that are suffering. So few therapists are trained in treating health anxiety. A recent person that took my course said that I was the only one he could find and he had his PhD in neuroscience. So I am assuming he knows how to research. If you would like extra help, I highly recommend taking my course in how to recover from health anxiety. There is also a wonderful support group that is included with the course if you are interested in more support. I am available daily in that group as well. I have the same problem. It especially affects me at night. I am not meaning to give medical advice, but the supplement NAC works wonders for those songs on repeat….or (ear worms). NAC is recommended by many psychiatrists that treat people with OCD.
Hello I keep getting intrusive thoughts about what if my loved died and it’s really bothering me and how can I not compulse because sometimes I am able to ignore it and not compulse however i get huge anxiety and other times I can’t stop compulsing how can I tell my brain that it’s a just an intrusive thought and it’s not real and will never be real?
I suggest recording a script where you describe your fear in detail, but also describe that as much as you wish you could forever protect everyone you love from anything bad or harmful happening to them, you do not have that power. As no one on the planet has that power. And that you will continue to love them, but accept that you do not have a guarantee or certainty about anyone health or safety. I know this sounds difficult, but your brain will get better at understanding that you have to tolerate this anxiety and still life your life as fully. I recommend listening to the script on repeat for a minimum of 20 minutes, 3 times a day.
It takes time. It is ok for the thought to be there. After several days of listening to a recorded script, you will habituate to the script and you will no longer be reactive and anxious. I understand the discomfort right now.

That is difficult to say as a component of anxiety can be hereditary, caused by trauma, situational induced or caring about perfection or performance or being accepted or just plain doing a good job. Avoidances can also contribute to anxiety. There are so many things that can influence the development of anxiety disorders.

What about night and this mad feeling that comes with palpitations at night? I begin with - will I get sleep to I am not getting sleep and finally I won't get sleep and from there I am doomed. I have just finished an 8 hour session of palpitations and no sleep. Now suddenly my brain says, what's up? What's your problem? We are cool. No palpitations and it's just fatigue now. I understand what is being said during the day time - what about the night? No sleep and all that it comes with. Anyone else here?
I am sorry that you are dealing with these symptoms at night. That is indeed the most frustrating and difficult time to experience high anxiety symptoms. About 50% of the people that have panic symptoms like palpitations have them at night and during periods of rest. The treatment recommended is called interoceptive sensitivity reduction training or exposures. You do the exercises during the day, but they desensitize your brain to those symptoms and therefore it helps at night too. If you are interested in this training, I have a new course on the treatment of high anxiety and panic coming out at the end of the month. Have you got much research in hypomobilty and OCD apparantly 79 percent have this and Asperger's links study in Oxford found larger amalgamia I've noticed your thumbs are hypomobile as my own and again as my family's.

It was his own little calming technique. I enjoy a whistler. Did you like it? My son always whistled and he struggled with anxiety as well. Your disparagement of people who take benzos in many videos is reprehensible. Most of us were given them by doctor with no knowledge or concern of the long-term consequences. Have some empathy.
First, let me say that I apologize if I have offended you in any way or if you feel I have shamed you for taking benzodiazepines. I think of people who have been prescribed benzodiazepines daily for years as victims of misinformation. Even their physicians had no idea how difficult it would be for people to withdrawal from these medications. It is a case of a situation where everyone meant well, but anxiety alone should not indicate prescribing benzodiazepines. I have incredible amounts of empathy for people taking benzodiazepines and understand that they are and have been prescribed by their physicians. I have absolutely only compassion for people on these medications because it is so difficult to get off of them. I have seen these medications absolutely destroy people’s lives when they are prescribed daily. Many are unable to sleep or function or remember things they have known for 20 years. It is a crisis in my opinion. I agree that there is a place for people to use these medications on occasion, perhaps when first beginning a difficult exposure or when flying or near the end of life. But, they are only meant to be used daily for a very short period of time, no longer than a few weeks. Even that has affected people’s ability to get to sleep afterwards. There are no facilities or programs to help people withdrawal as I receive hundreds of messages weekly asking me where to go for support. Their physicians want nothing to do with supporting their withdrawal that takes over a year for many. I could just be quiet and ignore the problem but it has become too heart breaking to ignore. I certainly mean no disrespect to anyone. But, if speaking out means I save one person from treating anxiety with a benzodiazepine, then I am grateful.

Years ago I read a book by Claire Weekes called "Peace From Nervous Suffering". She had the same main technique, accept whatever is happening to you and keep moving forward. You explain things differently from her, and you probably have a lot more studies to back it up. But she discovered the paradoxical key to recovery through her work as a doctor taking care of patients. I know it works, and I'm glad it is still being used, though it certainly takes a lot of courage.
Yes, Claire Weekes was decades ahead of the research that proved what she taught. We now can actually see images of new neuropathways in the brain make new connections when people accept and allow what ever happens to happen. I have read her book Agoraphobia and she was spot on.
I’m having pretty rough panic and anxiety this evening after a moderate drinking binge. Ideally I wouldn’t have had as much to drink, that said your advice to remain non reactive is so key when 😮bodily symptoms have flared up. Welcoming the symptoms and using a paradoxical approach is so important. Not fun, but much more manageable and intelligent than trying to push scary/but not harmful symptoms away. That just doesn’t work. Next up drinking less and adapting a better relationship with alcohol

Hi Cassandra. I am sorry you have that sensation. Our head and bodies can create all kinds of sensations. We have to what ourselves from interpreting those sensations as negative or dangerous. That kind of interpretation only causes an anxiety response when we notice the sensation and that can make it worse. Since you have had it for a long time, perhaps interpreting it as “oh well, there you are again.” Just that little difference of accepting it as normal will help to calm your mind.
Very helpful advice..one day at a time to practice and conquer anxiety.

Thank you Paige. I am still struggling each day but i'm seeing a ERP focused therapist for my OCD and health anxiety. Even while having some health problems, i keep on trying to optimize sleep and diet and striking a balance between challenging myself and resting. Also, practicing self-compassion/gratitude is a big one for me because i often feel like a burden to others. One moment at a time!

I am so proud of you. That’s amazing progress. There are certain medical tests that might cause us anxiety, but we have a willingness to do them because they help us to maintain our health. Be proud of yourself to be willing to do things that make you uncomfortable because you care about your health. Allow the anxiety to come along if it wishes, but move forward doing what is important to do. ❤️

dear Paige, your videos help me so much, aftter the pandemic, I'm having a terrible anxiety when having to go out, and I get obssessed with things, I don't know what sickness or disorder I have because when I don't know where I have smthing or I can't find it even if I know it's at home, smthing trivial or important, I get dizzy and a terrible pain in my stomach. I start looking like crazy. If I'm not home I have this pain in.my stomach until I arrive home and can find it, I can't get rid of my anxiety and I feeling so sick. If I make a mistake when buying smthing or forget to buy smthing...anything... I cry, and I desperately try to find a solution, but the suffering is unbearable, I lay in bed in the dark feeling sick and maybe take some benzos. I suffered from depression and anxiety before the pandemic, but never never so badly. I was able to go out without fear and be normal and rational, I'm so desperate. Your videos really help me; you are my angel and my therapist. I'm doing a workbook for my depression and anxiety that helps...but right now I'm lost because I don't know my diagnosis to know how to handle this. I would apreciate so much your opinion, and try to watch the videos that can help and work on your pdfs. I really hope you can help me. Thanks so much.
Hi Anne. First, I am sorry that you are suffering with this. I have a good idea what is going on, but of course I cannot diagnose on RUclips without knowing your full history. What I am sharing is a possibility and you will have to consider that it is a general opinion but without a complete history. It sounds like you are experiencing a form of OCD that goes along with feeling like things are complete. I see this often with people that have a subtype of perfection ocd. It doesn’t mean that you want all things to be perfect…just certain things. It is your brain’s attempt to feel certain and have control…at least of those certain things that come to mind. It is also related to having a “just right” feeling, feeling of completion and certainty. The treatment that is recommended is called ERP and in ERP we basically do the opposite of what ocd wants us to do. We don’t try to find those things to get comfort. We instead challenge ourselves to not fix things and stay with the discomfort. I offer a course on exactly how to do this if you ever want more help with it. Eventhough I was exhausted last night I hardly slept and had nightmares just because I made a bad choice at shopping smthing which is not so expensive...I keep getting obssessd with thoughts like Ishould have not...Also taking decisions is awful...What you suggest: to do the opposite seems really painful and really don't know how to do it. I found you about 18 months and listening to you helped me greatly. Today I started getting that familiar feeling of panic again simply because of a twinge I am having in my abdomen. It just bugged me at first but by the time it had twinged a few more times the anxiety ramped up to heart pounding and tremorous and teariness. So I tuned in to this video to hear you again and have another way to deal with this latest attack of anxiety. I’ve heard that beta blockers work well for anxiety but I’m not sure I want to resort to more medication, I already take anti depressants. Thanks for your help ❤️
Hi Tess. Remember that it is your reaction to the anxiety symptoms that can make it worse. Anxiety is normal…those twinges and all of those physical symptoms of panic are all normal. Let the whoosh wave of anxiety float over you and do nothing…it will pass as long as you don’t do anything to try to avoid it. It is uncomfortable, but not dangerous in any way. ❤️

I'm a phlebotomist, for 12 years now. Geriatrics to Pediatrics. In 2020 I developed debilitating anxiety. My doctor explained it was probably me feeling like my life was out of control, so my brain no longer felt it was in control of my body. I go through very bad periods of anxiety and panic where I have to take benzos to control it. At this point I know it's my fear of having anxiety and shaking and embarrassing myself drawing someones blood. I can not seem to shake it. I go months being fine, and all of a sudden I have a trigger that sends me into a spiral. I'm so sick of feeling this way. Your video helped me get through a tough situation today. But how do I just welcome this anxiety when I know I need my hands to be steady to draw someones blood? Any advice would be welcome. I'm at my witts end and hope you can help. ❤
Hi Julia. I am so sorry that you go through this. I am wondering what you believe your core fear is under that anxiety. Do you think it is feeling judged by the person you are taking blood from? It sounds like it is a fear of embarrassment or of being negatively judged versus the fear of anxiety coming up when you are taking their blood, or it could be both. Allowing the anxiety to come and go is important. Also, in some way confronting the embarrassment of shaking in front of someone when taking their blood. You could do exposures on that fear but recording your worst fears about that situation and habituating to the fear, or you could think of what you might say to the person if this does happen. Once we fully address the fear, the anxiety will die down on its own.

@@twish1999, I have 2 adult sons and can relate to wanting the best for our kids and not wanting them to experience emotional or physical pain. But, have you thought of how you handled challenges in your life and if anyone could have stopped your challenges in life. With pain comes growth. My sons have made mistakes, felt pain and yet those very things I wanted them to avoid were the same things that helped them mature and grow. If we constantly give our kids warnings, we are sending them the message that we don’t think they can handle it. Instead, give them the message that, “Yes, life has its ups and downs. You will go through tough challenges. But, I know that you are strong enough to make it through. We all make mistakes, but thank goodness, we learn from them.” Give them the gift that you believe in their ability to cope with whatever life throws at them. I understand the worry. Place your hand on your heart and tell yourself that they will be okay. Even though your worry is a sign that you care, you cannot protect them from life. You are willing to step back and trust that they will learn and grow stronger through whatever life throws their way. ❤️

Hello! This was an excellent video! Thank you very very much! I do have a question though about the I.AM method and especially about identifying the thoughts and cognitive defusion. For someone who struggles with OCD, the identifying part and the cognitive defusion couldnt act like mental compulsions? Like reassurance that these obsessions are just thoughts? Can you explain this to me? How can we use congitive defusion and identifying and labeling thoughts without using them as mental compulsions?
That is a great question. In cognitive defusion techniques, like labeling your thought as an ocd thought, you are separating the ocd thought from you. Many people have a difficult time separating their ocd thoughts which live in their imagination from their “real self” thoughts. But, you are correct in that it could become a mental compulsion if the person uses it lower anxiety in the moment and continues to engage with their thoughts. I like people to catch themselves as soon as they realize that they are having an intrusive thought and labeling the thought seems like a good way to jump off and interrupt that thought and allowing it to float there in the background and them shifting focus in the moment and move on. When you really think about it…when you notice yourself having an intrusive thought…just noticing it is in a way, labeling it. It is just noticing what is happening and reminding yourself to not engage and refocus your attention elsewhere.

Hi Rebecca. Yes, that is a common yet frustrating anxiety symptom. I want to encourage you to keep working on leaving the house daily and acting “as if” the dizziness doesn’t bother you or concern you (sending those unconcerned messages to the brain). Eventually, your brain will learn that it does not have to activate the fight or flight response. It is a learning process that takes time, commitment and patience…as you surely already know. Hang in there, be compassionate to yourself and keep up the good work. ❤️

I have had sleep anxiety for more than a year. I fall asleep just fine as I journal and meditate before bed but I wake up a lot of times during the nights with fast heart beats and racing thoughts. What should I do in the situations please? Also during the day I just keep thinking/ engaging with the thoughts. I have mediated and done journaling for 2 months. Have not seen a huge change but tiny bit yes :D Would be appreciated to hear from you

@@kokoslifediary , moving through your day, and being present in the moment, focusing on what you are “doing, seeing, hearing, etc.” will be most helpful. Being stuck in your mind, ruminating and analyzing your thoughts will only create more cycles of worry and rumination. Sometimes your brain can react with adrenaline when you are relaxed or even sleeping if it has learned that heart rate changes are something to be concerned about. Hi Steven. In the case that something needs attention in your life, sit down and create a plan of recovery. It might involve how you might earn money, save, cut back and whatever it takes to get you on the road to feeling more financially secure. This is a process of course and it will take time, but your brain will calm down when it knows that you have a plan to move forward. Think of this relationship you were in as a wake up call that you have to take care of you.
I haven't felt safe for years now, like that feeling when you can just let go, feel relief, be relaxed... I'm in constant vigilance, like a kind of tension or suspense in my body and mind. It's taking a toll on my energy to say the least, and I slowly get more and more stress symptoms like stomach issues, muscle fatigue etc. I feel like I've tried everything, like I need that call "Hi it's the police again, we were mistaken, no one was injured" except there is no situation and no "call" that can come... Just feeling unsafe in my body and mind all the time. How the 💐🙃💢🎷 do I snap out of it???
I am so sorry. Yes, you are describing a feeling of being in fight or flight. Basically, your brain believes that you are in danger. This will be a process for you to work on teaching your brain that you are safe. Doing things like walking in nature, or walking with a friend or petting animals, laughing, playing, dancing, having eye contact with people, practicing yoga, meditation, exercise, good nutrition, good sleep habits, diaphragmatic breathing…all of these things practiced regularly and not in response to anxiety in the moment can help your brain learn that you are safe. Things like worrying, ruminating, avoiding things, reacting to your anxiety, worrying about your anxiety and trying to calm down in the moment you are anxious…all of these things give your brain the message that you are in danger. This is a process that will take time. I hope you feel better.

But still, I have a question, I have pure O, and I always struggle with wrong thoughts all the time. I mean, I know some people who are just silly, I just totally don't want to even think about them. But, still I'm always obsessed with those images, and it mostly happens at my workplace. My brain compells me to Perform rituals, and if I don't do so, then thought such as my workplace will be snatched from me, or something wrong could happen, comes to my mind.
So, please tell me what am I missing? And what must I do to cope with these thoughts?
And one more. Do our thoughts really affect our physical reality? Share your opinion on this.

Hello. I am glad that you are aware that it is OCD, Pure O. It sounds like you are doing these rituals because you are afraid that something bad will happen if you don’t. This is a core fear of uncertainty…you are uncertain if something bad will happen and therefore are afraid to take the chance of not doing the compulsion. First, you are not alone. This is very common yet, it causes suffering. You are living in your imagination and making decisions based on your imagination and not reality. Can you stop yourself from doing the rituals? Can you stop part of the ritual? Can you change the rituals? It is best to stop…but if you cannot seem to do that, then stop part of it, or change it until you have the commitment to stop all of it. I have been passing out from panic attacks stress etc my whole life, it feels like. First time i had just turned 12. That day. And it was our last night at camp. We were all crying as we sang in chapel. It was hot and there were prolly 100 candles lit. Next thing i knew I was waking in infirmary. Had to miss last nite w my bunk mates. 😔 Has happened nearly dz times since. They are terribly terrifying.

Anxiety is the worst. It makes you imagine all types of negative scenarios and outcomes about a certain situation or event. But mostly once you do or go through whatever you're nervous about, it turns out to be not nearly as bad as you imagined it to be. But I dont know how to calm the anxiety before the event, that's the hard part for me.

Hey Paige. I get a “pit” in my stomach a lot when I get anxious so I’m constantly checking to see if I have the pit to see if I am still anxious or getting anxious. What can I do about it?
Hi Larry. It sounds like you are experiencing somatic or awareness of bodily sensations. This is a normal experience, but can lead to a cycle of anxiety if you are purposely checking to see if it is happening and adding worried thoughts to the sensation. I have somatic awareness of my breathing at times and have learned how to treat it quite well. First, I suggest changing the message you give yourself about the pit in your stomach. Say something like, “Oh there you are. Welcome. Feel free to stay as long as you would like little pit…I am not concerned about you at all…please stay as long as you wish…I am just going to go about my day.”
Second, do the best you can at not mentally checking to see if it is there…because of course it will be there if you go checking on it. Act “as if” you are not concerned at all…even if you are feeling anxious.
Third, you could use my I. A.M. method as I discuss in my brain hack video here: ruclips.net/video/9nEC8yIgFKg/видео.html
And finally, your last step is to try to have the pit in your stomach happen on purpose. This is an exposure exercise. By trying to make it happen on purpose, you are sending the message to your brain that this sensation is nothing at all to worry about. And then, of course, do nothing…no response to the sensation or anxiety (that is the response prevention part). 😊

My heart PVCs always scare the hell out of me. I've had them since I was a kid, but they are definitely worse since I started having anxiety disorder. Sometimes they are non existent, sometimes they happen often. I am finally off my SSRIs, but I am still on Klonopin. I will taper off that eventually, but it got so bad, so I had to have a little extra help
It sounds like you are managing your thoughts better and not leaping into catastrophic thinking about your PVC’s. If you have had them since you were a kid, they may just come and go as part of what is normal, albeit uncomfortable, for you.
@@PaigePradkoTherapy I keep latching on to that way of thinking. I just also had a bad cold, and my mind was overly anxious and sensitive after. I think that may have a lot to do with it. I also get a lot of PVCs if I travel or am somewhere new

Hi Jen. I do not want to give medical advice or judge anyone’s treatment as you have a whole history that I am unaware. I am typically going to support allowing your brain to learn that you are not worried about anxiety and bodily sensations. However, an occasional use of your medication does not concern me. People tend to get into a more difficult situation when they are using something like a benzodiazepine daily and become dependent on those medications. Without knowing more, I think you are fine in what you are describing. ☺️

Hi Jeremy. It sounds like you have anticipatory anxiety and maybe a bit of magical thinking going on. Magical thinking is also like superstitious thinking.
What if “panic attacks” or “anxiety attacks” suddenly come on during peaceful / ordinary moments? What if the physical symptoms are not brought on by the emotion of anxiety? For example, chatting at work and suddenly feeling lightheaded or faint, then heart pounding.

@@JohnD0129 I gave up vigorous exercise like power-walking, because it seemed to throw me into these attacks about 10-15 minutes AFTER I had finished.
I also keep a benzodiazepine like Ativan with me, to ensure the episode only lasts 15-20 minutes and does not persist for hours.
I hope to start a thyroid supplement soon to see if that may help too.

Try your best to allow the anxiety and the panic and stop yourself from doing things to try to stop it in the moment. Your brain learns through these experiences that you are safe. If you do something in an effort to calm yourself, you prolong your panic and anxiety because your brain stays on high alert. Let the anxiety or panic wash over you…surrender to it. It is not dangerous only uncomfortable. It will not last more than a few minutes instead of hours if you do nothing but surrender to it.
Hello Paige, I struggle badly with sexually-themed OCD and I hope you can help me, because I am not able to access in person treatment right now.
I am aware of what OCD therapy looks like, and I know I need to learn to tolerate the thoughts in order to recover. The only thing that sort of keeps me from trying therapy is a fear of these thoughts changing who I am.
Can thoughts influence my gender or sexual orientation (who I feel attraction to)?

Hi Melissa. I am so sorry you had Covid and are having some lingering symptoms. Anxiety can really exacerbate those symptoms, so you need to learn what to do. I specialize in treating people with health anxiety. It can really be horrible for many and there are specific techniques that can really calm it down. I have received so many people asking for help with this that I felt compelled to make my therapy techniques and treatment available in a course for those that are suffering. So few therapists are trained in treating health anxiety. A recent person that took my course said that I was the only one he could find and he had his PhD in neuroscience. So I am assuming he knows how to research.

I have anxiety . My symptom is that I have songs continuously running in my mind (24*7). I have been suffering from it from past 1.5 years .😭😭
I have the same problem. It especially affects me at night. I am not meaning to give medical advice, but the supplement NAC works wonders for those songs on repeat….or (ear worms). NAC is recommended by many psychiatrists that treat people with OCD.
Hello I keep getting intrusive thoughts about what if my loved died and it’s really bothering me and how can I not compulse because sometimes I am able to ignore it and not compulse however i get huge anxiety and other times I can’t stop compulsing how can I tell my brain that it’s a just an intrusive thought and it’s not real and will never be real?
I suggest recording a script where you describe your fear in detail, but also describe that as much as you wish you could forever protect everyone you love from anything bad or harmful happening to them, you do not have that power. As no one on the planet has that power. And that you will continue to love them, but accept that you do not have a guarantee or certainty about anyone health or safety. I know this sounds difficult, but your brain will get better at understanding that you have to tolerate this anxiety and still life your life as fully. I recommend listening to the script on repeat for a minimum of 20 minutes, 3 times a day.

It takes time. It is ok for the thought to be there. After several days of listening to a recorded script, you will habituate to the script and you will no longer be reactive and anxious. I understand the discomfort right now.

Why as my anxiety started in first place
That is difficult to say as a component of anxiety can be hereditary, caused by trauma, situational induced or caring about perfection or performance or being accepted or just plain doing a good job. Avoidances can also contribute to anxiety. There are so many things that can influence the development of anxiety disorders.

What about night and this mad feeling that comes with palpitations at night? I begin with - will I get sleep to I am not getting sleep and finally I won't get sleep and from there I am doomed. I have just finished an 8 hour session of palpitations and no sleep. Now suddenly my brain says, what's up? What's your problem? We are cool. No palpitations and it's just fatigue now.
I understand what is being said during the day time - what about the night? No sleep and all that it comes with. Anyone else here?
I am sorry that you are dealing with these symptoms at night. That is indeed the most frustrating and difficult time to experience high anxiety symptoms. About 50% of the people that have panic symptoms like palpitations have them at night and during periods of rest. The treatment recommended is called interoceptive sensitivity reduction training or exposures. You do the exercises during the day, but they desensitize your brain to those symptoms and therefore it helps at night too. Have you got much research in hypomobilty and OCD apparantly 79 percent have this and Asperger's links study in Oxford found larger amalgamia I've noticed your thumbs are hypomobile as my own and again as my family's.
You have done quite a bit of research, Tom. I have not done any research on hypomobility and OCD. But yes, my thumbs and my fingers have that trait. My dad has the same thing. I will have to look into it. You have a world of knowledge. 🙏❤️

It was his own little calming technique. I enjoy a whistler. Did you like it? My son always whistled and he struggled with anxiety as well. He is in training now to be a therapist and graduates next May. Looks like those that struggle due seek understanding … and often then want to help others with the same struggles.

Start with physical movement. Just going for a walk and being in nature if that is possible is the best place to start if you are stressed, anxious and depressed.

Your disparagement of people who take benzos in many videos is reprehensible. Most of us were given them by doctor with no knowledge or concern of the long-term consequences. Have some empathy.
First, let me say that I apologize if I have offended you in any way or if you feel I have shamed you for taking benzodiazepines. I think of people who have been prescribed benzodiazepines daily for years as victims of misinformation. Even their physicians had no idea how difficult it would be for people to withdrawal from these medications. It is a case of a situation where everyone meant well, but anxiety alone should not indicate prescribing benzodiazepines. I have incredible amounts of empathy for people taking benzodiazepines and understand that they are and have been prescribed by their physicians. I have absolutely only compassion for people on these medications because it is so difficult to get off of them. I have seen these medications absolutely destroy people’s lives when they are prescribed daily. Many are unable to sleep or function or remember things they have known for 20 years. It is a crisis in my opinion. I agree that there is a place for people to use these medications on occasion, perhaps when first beginning a difficult exposure or when flying or near the end of life. But, they are only meant to be used daily for a very short period of time, no longer than a few weeks. Even that has affected people’s ability to get to sleep afterwards. There are no facilities or programs to help people withdrawal as I receive hundreds of messages weekly asking me where to go for support. Their physicians want nothing to do with supporting their withdrawal that takes over a year for many. I could just be quiet and ignore the problem but it has become too heart breaking to ignore. I certainly mean no disrespect to anyone. But, if speaking out means I save one person from treating anxiety with a benzodiazepine, then I am grateful.
