I think all of those Badab war participant chapters are probably among the most interesting every created in 40k, and I think its commonly overlooked what literary genius they represented: Forgeworld blurred the lines between loyalist and traitor for the first time by creating a series of chapters that resembled traitors, 1 of which we now KNOW the origins of, the Carcheradons (Space Sharks) which literally were Evil Raven Gaurd, exiled by order of Corax himself, and doomed to roam the stars under Arkahn Fal, the Original Legion Master, and were so terrifying, they blurred the lines between the Raven Guard or Night Lords.
We also saw the appearance of Dishonorable Dark Angels, the Star Phantoms whom were believed exiled for their use of Forbidden Dark Age Weapon Technologies, and who lacked any of the Knightly Values of the order in their soldier rather than Knightly mindset.
Then the Minotaurs appeared: either Evil Iron Hands, or Evil Imperial Fists, who blurred the lines between those two chapters, and the Iron Warriors, being virtually identical. Personally, I tend to think the numbers of similarities tend to favor the Imperial Fists hypothesis, since they seem to serve the High Lords of Terra, are believe to recruit from Terra, have a penchant for both Siege Craft AND close combat which was said to resemble the World Eaters: guess who practiced with the World Eaters, the Imperial Fist First Captain Sigismund, Mailed Fist of Terra. They push this to such a degree, its hard to see the difference between them and Imperial Fists most hated enemy, the Iron Warriors, that you can practically taste the irony.
However, these arent likely the only Sons of Dorn represented should this be the case, guess who appears on the other side of the conflict... oh yeah, Evil Black Templars, a chapter known as the Executioners, founded by Sigismunds friendly rival, Fafnir Rahn....
And now we come to the Red Scorpions.... A chapter so "by the book" that these space Nazi's blur the lines between the Ultramarines and Emperors Children....making them virtually indistinguishable and making you wonder if the Ultramarines are not secretly chasing the perfection of Slannesh.....The Irony is over 9000 when "the good guys, the lamenters," lose to these Evil Loyalists....

No, we don't know if the Carcheradons are descendents of Arkahn Fal, and whether or not you consider the pre-Corax raven guard to be evil is entirely a matter of opinion.
The fact that the Carcheradons worship the God emperor leads me to believe that their creation was much later than that particular parting of ways.
Besides, the idea of them potentially being loyalist nightlords instead of emo bird boys always seemed cooler to me, and while both chapters rely on stealth, I could see the nightlords falling into less subtle tactics much sooner.

They are differentiated by a few traits: Imperial Fists stocks lack two functional organs: the Betcher's gland (acid spit) and Sus-an Membrane (hibernation). Also Imperial Fists are obsessed with pain and overcoming it, not so much maintaining (absurd levels) purity of faith and form. As such, the Scorpions would probably revile the Templars.
They do, however, share in sheer stubbornness and loyalty to the Imperium and Emperor. I always wondered why the Templars take their faith so far compared to other Fists chapters.
Sadly they come too early to be of the "cursed" founding, when they tinkered with a bunch of mutated gene seed and had to destroy the majority of the created material and marines.

With the Word Bearers point, I've got an idea for their origins. As the Horus Heresy began, a bunch of Colchisians and others from the world's the Word Bearers conquered pre-Monarchia remained loyal to the Imperial Cult and resisted the teachings of Chaos, as a result, they fled their homes or were found by Loyalists to be resisting the Traitors. After the Heresy, the children of these loyal souls would be inducted into the newly created Adeptus Astartes, but with Word Bearers geneseed, either due to a clerical mix-up or the recipient's leaders demanding it, or even one of the primarchs hoping for the irony of the Word Bearers getting beaten by a Loyalist force with their own geneseed, as a result, the Red Scorpions would become a chapter with traitor geneseed, alongside the myriad of other chapters that were started by Loyalist survivors from the Traitor Legions, like the Carcharodons and Death Eagles.

I was actually surprised that the Imperial Fists was not considered as a possibility. I think the reverence for Guilliman as well as the general stability of the gene seed are very valid points. The Imperial Fists however aside from missing two of their gene seeds (don't know if it is documented one way or another if the Red Scorpions) are also considered to be stable and the Black Templars which are descended from the Imperial Fists have a similar temperament to what is mentioned in this video.

    • @40KTheories

Considering the Red Scorpions is abnormally pure, Imperial Fists wouldn't really be likely because they are missing two of their organs from their gene-seed stocks. While Fists gene-seed is stable, it's not regarded as being pure for this reason.

It seems like most legions had pretty clean gene seeds, regardless if their primarch's turned to Chaos. I think a plethora of modern chapters with "unknown" origins are from the handful of loyalist marines that weren't apart of their parent legion's betrayal. The Blood Ravens have an unusually large amount of psychers, so there's reason to believe they might be from the Thousand sons. Then, to wipe away the dishonor of their parent legions, the Blood Raven's founders took on a new chapter name and erased the known history from imperial records. I'd assume the Red Scorpions are the same. Hmmmmm they gotta be one of the only chapters to venerate the emperor as a god. My bet is they might be from the World Bearers gene stock? Even though I think the WHOLE legion fell to chaos, their gene stock would still be controled from terra or mars.

  • @messageinthebottle1673

I will admit tho, "genetic purity" is one of the main themes in the warhammer 40k franchise where people are being encouraged to be transhuman, genetic modification, natural/unnatural mutation, and even evolution. So having a space marine chapter that is obsessed with genetic purity is very "fitting" for the warhammer 40k lore.

Personally - I think it goes like this: They are made from lost legion stock. It plays somewhat with second theory that lost legions were absorbed by Ultramarines, thier records purged. So they see old papa smurf as thier father, but records were purged just in case somebody would try to pry into this topic too deep - as it could harm the coverup of fate of lost legions. So they were established from Ultramarines, but they are not in fact Ultramarines. Maybe somebody had bright idea of forming separate chapters out of geneseed of lost legions that were still in service with Ultramarines. To separate these still loyal marines, thier geneseed now proven not to be faulty, to both give them a chance to work without Ultramarines oversight and spearate Ultramarine geneseed to avoid mixing in lost legions within successor chapters founded from Ultramarines.

Question... why, whenever a Chapter is of questionable heritage and possibly of either Ultramarine or Traitor stock, does nobody think at all of the Luna Wolves? Weren't they, in effect, the loyalist "mirror Legion" of the Ultramarines? Is it not just as reasonable for them to be of Luna Wolf stock as Emperor's Children or Word Bearers?

    • @mrman9977
      @mrman9977 3 года назад +1

The Luna Wolves aren't seen as a loyalist legion. They are loyalists from a traitor legion like the rest. The problem with identifying a possible candidate to be a Luna Wolves successor is that they don't really have any major unique trait. Emperor's Children are perfectonists to he highest degree while the World eaters are religious zellots, just like these guys are. There is never any chapter that is speculated to be Decendents of Horus because there is not any chapter that points to them.

Some Space Marine chapters do worship the Emperor as a God (Black Templars and Red Scorpions are two such examples)
As far as the Blood Angels are concerned, the natives of Baal itself worship the Emperor as a God, although the chapter itself would appear to revere him more as a father figure as opposed to a deity (from what I can recall off the top of my head at least)
