This video is so good! The fact that Anghel’s route is canon is so genius. I love Anghel. I love all these characters. One time my friend saw a Luzon bleeding heart at the zoo and said it looked like me
I’m rewatching a play through, and I just realized that when you let Kazuaki walk you home after Tanabata, he looks sad and remarks that it’s nice to have a place to come back to.
Nageki also gets nostalgic about the country millet.
There’s also the shot of the broken buildings on your run before you meet Azami, and kinda just everything about Hiyoko’s lifestyle. Man, even the jokes are god tier foreshadowing.

Ahhhh this is so gooddd thank you for making this!! Totally agree with those early points, it's hard looking for stuff on youtube about it and the large majority being those youtube videos which were clearly more based around it as a "funny bird game" and playing a few routes. It's a really good game genuinely :(( and loved seeing all these details laid out, they're so good!! Nageki is my favourite character, can't pick a favourite scene off the top of my head (but any involving him will already be wonderful TT).

Nageki's one of my faves too, I feel so bad for him (It's kinda funny how nonchalant he is about stuff like spoiler etiquette too)
The foreshadowing in hatoful is just SO good! I replayed the game recently with a friend who has never played it and man hatoful and holiday star are both just such great games.
Anyway as a fan (tm) my fave character is Shuu. On one level I just think it's just kinda funny how clearly evil and unremorseful he is as a character and that it's such an open secret how sketchy he is. But on the other hand he's still capable of having loved and trying to process his grief and going about fulfilling a promise in the worst possible way because he genuinely just doesn't understand any other way and that's just fascinating and makes for a very compelling character.
My fave scene is probably in holiday star where the migrant and shuu meet up. Everything about that conversation is just so loaded and that it was enough to get shuu to help everyone against the king really just makes me :')
the fact shuu gets so defensive once the migrant says he doesn't remember him is really something, as if he's genuinely hurt by it

Reviewers aren't familiar with the concept of visual novels' real ending being unlocked after getting all the other endings (besides, by concept, reviews tend to evaluate games with the question "is this game worth start playing?" not "is this game worth finishing?").
The channel Games As Literature made a good analysis of the story in two videos (one for dating and the other for the real ending route), and, besides of pointing out how better the pacing and story structure (and character writing) is in the real ending route than the rest of the game, he also states how the dating sections were full of foreshadowing and set ups for it.
The funny thing is that all that busy work in the dating routes is just to familiarize the player with each character's personality and motivations; because then the real ending route can focus in putting those characters through the wringer.

maybe it's something about the music or the general atmosphere of the cafe? it's pretty soothing imo, and that combined with Kenzaburou's understanding of both Hiyoko and Ryouta's situations is sweet

So a decently popular streamer, jello apocalypse recently streamed the whole game, with all the friends doing fantastic voice acting
It was really fun because two of them vaguely remember the true ending, and watching the new comers go like “what the hell is happening”

It's always good to see Hatoful content that actually shows how brilliantly written these games are rather than just treating them like jokes. You love to see it.
As for favorite characters, Ryouta and Hiyoko are tied for me for that position, the dynamic the two of them have is just perfect and each of them are fascinating characters in their own right from how off the wall and lovable Hiyoko is or the hidden depths and emotional maturity of Ryouta with his unending kindness, they're just both so great in their own ways.
As for my favorite scene, I think I have to go with Yuuya's "death" in the true route, the sheer emotion between him and Sakuya, all of that angst and bad blood giving way to the brotherly love Sakuya refused to admit he had before it was too late, it's just such a heartwrenching scene.
I replayed Hatoful Boyfriend after a few years and my god playing some routes back to back really blows your mind 🤯🤯🤯 it's still so wonderful even after all of these years

Thank you for this. I've played this game multiple times last year and aside from Hiyoko's lifestyle and the post apocalyptic look on the city as she passes by when she looks for a summer job, I think you've gotten everything. My favorite character is Yuuya (suave secret agent with a heart of gold) and my favorite scene was when hitori revealed himself as nageki's brother. I was playing through the game during a very dull duty and the scene blew my mind. Just when I thought that the biggest plot twist the game had was Ryouta being responsible for Hiyoko's death, they pulled that out. I never expected that the bird Kazuaki had crossed out in his picture was his brother, who was actually Nageki, of all people. I simply assumed Kazuaki had his heart broken from a previous failed relationship. I love love love this game because all the little seeds they sprinkled throughout the first part of the game really came together in the true ending. Not once can you say that a reveal was random. Everything was foreshadowed from the start and it all came out beautifully.
I just barely found this and let me tell you I almost screamed when I saw this. I love those two pigeon games so much (Like a cornerstone of my personality amount of love) and everyone thinks I am weird for it even if I try to tell them the game is deeper than it initially looks. Seeing love for the games and their writing is so welcome

My favorite character is Anghel in general, but Ryouta for the feels. That boy makes me SOB.
Then my favorite scene is probably the part where Ryouta has allowed the Doctor to rewire his memories and personality to want to exterminate humans and everyone snaps him out of it. specifically, Hiyoko's line in that.
Also Pretty Coore. Because that is the best image to ever have existed.

Just finished the vn today and was browsing through videos- like damn the silly bird dating sim was so much deeper than i expected. Especially as someone who pursued okosan’s route first so getting an ending about pudding warped my expectations for the other endings. Okosan definitely was my favourite from introduction until the end (even if he doesn’t have much development he’s my silly pudding obsessed dove and i love him dearly) my favourite scene was probably the final fight vs ryouta, im just a sucker for stuff like that lol

yey, people talking about hatoful boyfriend! my favourite character was always Yuuya. in my opinion, there are only two endings i would consider truly happy for the characters involved and Yuuta's is one of them. maybe it's because i got to see Nageki's ending as my first one but it's good to see someone feeling happy

Watching this video made me remember just how GOOD the story is. I always keep my love for Hatoful on the down low since there's not many people to talk to it about, but literally yesterday and today I've had Hatoful brainrot, analyzing and remembering the different things that happen in the game which made me teary and gosh I love the story ans characters SO MUCH.
Speaking of characters, for the question of favorite character, it's gotta be my boy Ryouta. Normal childhood best friend that gets thrown into the murder of his friend that he accidentally causes and blocked out of his memory and even after her spirit comforts him, he gets thrown into a cryogenic state where, even after all of this, his mother may be dead once he's released? Yeah, that guy.
As for favorite scene, it's gotta be when Nageki talks to the king at the lighthouse and gives that beautiful speech. It's so good. Second fav scene (because of how much it has stayed with me) is Shuu explaining to Ryouta who killed Hiyoko. "Yesterday her body, today her mind. You're a far more twisted villain than I could ever hope to be, Mr. Kawara"

Like legit one of my friends in chat who was most sceptical was going "I can't believe I am getting invested in a bird" and by true ending their whole tune changed ENTIRELY--

Thank you so much for this video. Hatoful is and has been one of my absolute favorite visual novels for years and it always irks me that nobody ever seems to give it the credit it deserves. my fav from when i first played it was sakuya, then anghel, and now that im older i have a lot more appreciation for nageki. i also love the Tohri route released in later years. its super cute.
for favorite scenes... anghel's and nageki's route endings were my favorites, as well as ryouta's for how heartwrenching it was. overall the game has so many good comedic and tear-jerking moments and balances them out even in the true ending. Moa is a really good writer

I'm a little late to the video, but I absolutely love everything you covered here! I'm a huge fan of Hatoful Boyfriend too. My favorite character is Yuuya by far, and my favorite scene is in the second game when Yuuya rejects the King's offer to let him forget his guilt. But I love everything Yuuya does. ^^

Because of my love for this franchise, I rrplayed it many times and noticed the second meaning of many scenes, but the scene with Yuuya and the Shuu table I've had never thought about... My the most favourite character is kazuaki-kun, im so in love with him akqnwkwjq, and adore other character (especially guys from stuff trio & tohri)!!! Its hard to pick favourite scene, but maybe how king told his betrayal by hitori, because its the only one moment that make me cry after replaying hb and holiday star this year... thanks again for your video!! (Sorry, sometimes used a translator and can make a mistake because of my poor knowledge of english nyan..)

Nice to see people talking about this! I've been a fan since the demo and HB is seriously underrated.
One thing you didn't cover that might not have made it into the Steam release, I'm not sure since I didn't play that as heavily as the original - if you have Hiyoko pursue Nageki's route and never put any points into Vitality, there's an extra scene late in the route where she's in the library while slightly ill and passes out. Nageki *panics*, crying out for somebirdie to help, frantically asking himself how he can get someone else's attention. Finally he actually breaks a window. It turns out Hiyoko just had a cold, iirc.
Giving him millet can make old memories stir, so I gotta think that seeing a human collapse also brought something back. Nageki's so quiet and understated otherwise!

The Steam release left out a few unusual scenes like that which only appear given some select criteria, unfortunately it's been long enough that I don't have them catalogued.

And my favorite moment, corny as this might sound, was Sakuya vowing to come back for Ryouta near the end.

Bird game
I watched Dodger's (PressHeartToContinue) playthrough of Hatoful when I was pretty young and loved it so much that I revisit it every once in a while, it's great to crochet to lol! Recently I got the game myself and have had a really fun time playing through the routes- hopefully one day I'll finish my own playthrough!
My favorite bird has always been Nageki, both because I love mourning doves in real life, and just because his story is so interestingly central to the plot and heartbreaking! My favorite scene in the original is probably the beginning of Anghel's route because it comes so out of left field and makes me laugh OR Yuuya's reveal in the Hurtful route, because his guilt around the egg swap always makes me cry!
It's so cool to see this game getting some more love nowadays, I wish more people took the time to playthrough and get to some of the weirder, cooler parts of the franchise instead of taking it at face value because once you get into it it becomes such a fascinating murder mystery!

I played through both endings and read the wikis a bunch and only just NOW, with a straight forward explanation, got that Hitori killed Nanaki. I thought Hitori faked his death and made a new identity. I might need to replay/reread Holiday Star with that knowledge because it makes the King make so much more sense lfknslfksl. Definitely watching your video on HS after this one! Hatoful Boyfriends is such a good game for no reason I love it so much T-T
EDIT (ranting about how much I love the characers forgive me): My favorite character funnily enough was Nanaki because I thought he and Hitori were the same person. But after this video I don't know if I like Hitori that much now that he's not Nanaki fakfjakljskljflksj. Both are interesting as characters though Nanaki's ditzy personality and narcolepsy being a shield for depression is really interesting I want to see the friendship between Hitori and Nanaki so badly. It does look like from the Kyoto trip short story that they were teachers together or would have been in the better timeline.
Sakuya's characterization is the best. He's a spoiled and sheltered rich boy but he has a lot of inner drive and even before his parentage was revealed he had a lot of pride in his work. This pride in himself was so strong that you can clearly see the good and bad in his characterization, he's straight up racist towards a lot of people and puts himself on a pedestal but also holds everything he does to a high standard and is willing to learn how to do things better.
And oh god my intense love for Shuu, I don't like gore and yanderes so I don't like his actual route but I love his snarky personality and how he floats around all creepy in everyone else's stories. I like to imagine him in the good timeline where he is a mad scientist and has done some questionable things for the Hawk party and his own curiosity but I don't like him as a murderer. Kudos to those who do again I just don't like gore. BUT in the plot it makes sense because he needs to let the grand conspiracy for the sake of his man crush's kid's wish play out and anybody who gets in the way needs to go. I like how much he is in everybody's heads and how much control he has he is literally ruling the school from the shadows. This was basically a suicide mission for him, and I really want to see him in the good time line.
I love everyone else too but I don't have as much to say about them as these four
I’m back to rant because my thoughts are full of birds.
Fellas I think I hate Hitori but not in a productive way I go out of my way to think about this BIRD and his grief but also how insane and manipulative he is like he needs therapy and he killed my man Kazuaki. I sympathize with him but then all I can think about it this horrific idea of taking advantage of another mentally unstable individual offering them friendship with the intention of killing them but not only, the intention of making them kill themselves (even if he didn’t go into it with that intension eventually he had to have planned it out) and then taking their identity but modifying it so the original person (BIRD) can’t even be known. It’s so tragic and it hits me on every level of my soul.

Fave bird: Tohri! But Yuuya eventually grew on me a lot too.
Fave scene: it's been years since I played it, so I cannot recall a specific one ;w; But I do remember Nageki being my first route, and it was lovely (...right up until I got killed :D)
Also speaking of scenes that make sense later on: wasn't there a scene of a whole bunch of white feathers flying into the classroom, and it happens at some point after Yuuya gets busted at the infirmary?
the kazuaki bleach scene happens during the white feathers scene iirc, from what i recall the feathers were from the birds molting?
they do point out the feather pen thing that happens later in the shuu route to yuuya tho
and yeah yuuya's really great, i feel so bad for how nonchalant he is about his situation at times i hope he gets some well-deserved rest

my fave character is probably Hitori since he's probably the most morally gray out of all characters. there's so much more to him than 'sleepy sleep proud teacher' and the more you try to understand him the more interesting it gets. SPOILERS IG he lost his family like 3 times, no wonder he has severe mental issues
for the fave scene... idk!! everything in HB is great. probably kazuaki's ending cause it makes my eyes watery every time i read through it

i've seen a couple of videos about it and think its concept is interesting, though the comparison is a bit confusing since Slay the Princess shows its spookiness right away instead of how Hatoful sprinkles bits of foreshadowing in its initial routes (save for routes like Shuu's or Yuuya's that are more forward about something being wrong)
