    For the curious, you can uses resources like this website to date and find marks for vintage costume jewelry www.illusionjewels.com/research/costumejewelrymarkscoro.html Happy collecting everyone :)

      Thank you for the resource. I have many pins from the 50's - 80's but I think most are from stores like F.W. Woolworth and JC Penney's. They used to carry inexpensive jewelry in pretty boxes during the holidays as gift items. I especially like the animal and insect pins. I have a lovely large brooch filled with rhinestones in a flower pattern that may be from the 40s. You inspired me to go through and see if any have maker marks. Love your channel!

    Thanks so much for putting these excellent videos together - LOVE the content & the music. I have a vintage costume jewelry collection too & LOVE to see other's collections. FYI - I wear a jean jacket with a lot of my outfits & always create a 'brooch collage' on the upper left corner of the jacket - some gals at work & in classes say they can't wait to see the new collage I come up with. Brooches make me happy. :)

    Love this video! Can't wait for the rest in this series:D I do wonder, how do y o u even start dating these pieces? Besides it being listed as a certain date or looking up the brand these all seem like they could belong in any era. Are there any jewellery dating tips/tricks?

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  5 лет назад

      Thank you! For most marked pieces the different fonts and marks were only used for a certain range of decades, so the era can be a narrowed down by exactly which mark a piece has on the back. Once you have a few brooches that are all 1960's Trifari for example, you get used to the weight and style of those pieces and can start using that knowledge to help date other pieces even if they don't have a mark. The types of metals, finishes, types of stones, weight, and style (modernist, Victorian revival, etc.) are all clues to the era of a piece. Some types of enamel, plastics, and finishes just weren't invented or done before a certain time too, which helps date things, like how Bakelite is an earlier plastic an was only used for a certain range of time.
      Also there are many ads around from the era for the bigger brands like Trifari, Coro, and Lisner where you can see pieces as they were originally advertised. All research into vintage styling, watching old films, looking at old catalogs, looking at old magazines and editorials, all help to build an understanding of an era's aesthetics in your head and that combined knowledge can be used to date stuff. I have a video planned on this topic soon :)

    ADOOOOORE. This is the one I have been looking forward to! Brooches are my weakness...especially gold....and especially 1940s. Love the Trifari piece with monstera leaves - what a find. I wonder if the piece with the large brown stone and filigree could even be early 70s? Do I detect a whiff of Victorian revival?

    I saw you had a "B" for your name (kind of like Anne Boleyn!). You reminded me, my mum used to have a gold letter P for her name (18 carat as she bought it when still living in Italy. She's never had costume jewellery - no, certainly not wealthy!). She was born in 1935 so she was wearing that stuff more in the 1950's. Must ask her what happened to it!

    Feeling inspired to pull all my brooches out and organize them so I can wear them more often.
    I can empathize with thinking a piece is bigger in the photo. I’ve learned to always ask for measurements in either inches or mm (25mm = 1 inch).

    Prior to the pandemic, I was able to find a set of neckline pins and earrings in silver for an excellent price at a trade-in trade-out type of store in California. I had it priced really well and bought it. I brought the pieces to a friend to authenticate them, and it turns out they are well worth over two thousand dollars! It was made out of white gold and crafted with tiffany diamonds and pearls. No trademarks or scratches. I guess whoever sold it must have been unbeknownst to its actual value. And, your collection is superb! I can see that you take great care of every piece too! 😊

    • @Onewonderfullife
      @Onewonderfullife 5 лет назад

      Question for you. If it is an unsigned piece, how do you determine the era?

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  5 лет назад +1

      Aw! I'll go check it out! I have been collecting for many years and have bad spending habits, so I have amassed possibly just too much costume jewelry at this point ;)

    • @Onewonderfullife

      It is an enviable collection. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest! Lovely pieces, you have great taste!

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  5 лет назад +2

      For unsigned pieces, I use my years of research into vintage eras and familiarity with dated pieces to help me out. So if I have a Coro piece I know is dated to the mid 40's, and another unsigned piece that has very similar materials, construction, and also has a 1940's styling, I feel confident in saying that piece is from the 1940's as well. And just the more dated images you have seen of vintage style, like vogue editorials with dates, or catalogs with exact dates, films from a certain year, you can sorta build up the timeline of fashion styles in your head and if someone hands me a brushed gold brooch that's finely detailed and a bit heavier, I can place it in the late 50's through the 1960's, because in my head are images like this: www.morninggloryantiques.com/imagesJC/Ads/Trifari/tri27.jpg
      For example, the gold bird brooch in this video is marked Coro on the back, but it's a Coro mark that I haven't seen before, and the mixed shiny and matte finish on the piece had me suspicious it was later from the get go. Looking at original 1940's versions of that same style brooch online showed me that the construction and actual modeling/style was nearly exact to the true 40's ones, which leads me to believe that my brooch could be a later copy of the original sterling silver Coro brooch from the 1940's. Since brands re-released some styles in the 80's and 90's sometimes, I figure that my brooch is either one of these later reissues, or is a straight up knock off. The mark on the back may be Coro, but its not the 40's mark. And what led me off to that research rabbit hole? Just the finish on the metal being different than other 40's pieces I have that can be dated definitively. So my knowledge of pieces that can be dated exactly due to ads or specific marks, helps give me a knowledge base to use when dating unsigned pieces too.

    • @Onewonderfullife
      @Onewonderfullife 5 лет назад +1

      Wow, thanks! I right now just buy what I like (as we all should) but I'd like to know what era they are from, just out of curiosity really. I'll have to start doing some more research so I can become a little more well versed in jewelry knowledge.

    That bit on the end was funny. Was the large bow, near the end, with multi coloured gemstones starburst dated 1940-1950 a memory pin ? Military wives used to wear them. in the late 50's they were extremely popular especially around Christmas. Originally made of cloth or ribbon they became universal at least in North America. Also you had a pin with three various sized circles whic you showed upside down, do you wear it that way? No criticism, just curiosity.

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  5 лет назад

      Not sure about the bow brooch, it is from the brand Coro which was pretty huge back in the era. I was just filming the pins however they would sit best for the camera, but in general I am not adverse to wearing pins upside down or any which way really :)

    Wow! You have quite a collection. They are beautiful. I can't wait to see the other 2 videos. My favorite is at 11:02 it's stunning. I have quite a few old brooches from my mother in law who passed when she was 95 and I just was gifted 8 more from a friend who says they're from the 50's. Brooches are my new passion. I can't figure out how to wear many of them. I pin them on blazer lapels and the upper left of my denim jacket but could use some more suggestions. Maybe you could do a brooch styling video?
