Sad my mother had a contractor tell her she needed a new unit. So she asked me to look and see what I thought. I am an electronics tech. Serviced all kinds of equipment including robotics and automation equipment, all kinds of test equipment and all motor control labs and hydronic labs at a college. So I said no I don’t know much about HVAC other than the motor side of things. Sure enough the fan was locked up solid. Everything closed it’s a Sunday. But I had a spare universal one. So I measured up where the fan blade was shit it all down fit the swap and all and it still works perfectly. Yet they wanted her to buy a new unit.. I just don’t get why some trades people just try to screw people.

      Pretty cool, but
      1) can't the installers put a little splash of grease on the shaft?
      2) slick as this trick worked, shouldn't you just keep a puller in case this "hope it works" trick doesn't?

Did I understand this correctly? The last tech who visited, inspected the unit, it wasn't working, told the customer he needed to replace the outside unit and gave him a quote on a new replacement unit.
The last tech didn't convey the blower motor was bad and very likely the unit would work with a relatively inexpensive sevice and motor replacement?

IMHO, your containers of assorted, colored spare screws is one of the little things that sets a true professional apart from the average "hit and run hacker". Perhaps I have a bit of OCD but it really drives me crazy to see mounting/assembly holes with missing screws. I do have to disagree with you regarding Goodman products. Excepting the crappy, paper thin sheet metal chassis, my experience has been positive. I've installed several of their products over the years, including my own home and a package unit for my mom. Very few repairs have been needed and when it does happen, the parts are readily available and REASONABLY priced. Sorry but I've repaired several Carrier and Trane brand units, parts can be as much as 2 to 3 times the price for basically the same thing. That said, I ONLY install the premium 2 stage, high efficiency models so cannot speak to the quality of Goodman standard products.
