We've been aboard a couple Cheoy Lee motor sailors now, but this one is clearly the best we've seen. I think this Cheoy Lee 53 comes as close to perfect for a motor sailor that you're going to get. This is truly a go anywhere, in any weather, type of expedition yacht.

Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. We started out with Somnium, an O'day 272, moved onto Freebie, an Endeavour 32, and now are focusing on sailboat tours and working full time as teachers while we save up for our next boat.

Joe, 😔 thank you for this. I am so very thankful to God that you are my Brother in Jesus Christ.😊
That’s the best layout I’ve seen for a boat that size and by far! Beautiful boat!
I couldn't estimate how many boats I've "toured" on RUclips, but it's a lot. This has got to be the prettiest boat I've seen. I love classic lines, and she's been so beautifully maintained. But it's also kind of heartbreaking to know she's so far out of my reach!
Ok muito bom, gostaria de ver o cheoy lee- 63/78
Idk… our boat is pretty cool 😎 we just haven’t posted an episode yet.
Price up front

What a beautiful yacht! In my mind's eye I'm seeing the meme, "Shut up and take my money!" I'm so glad you present a variety of boat styles. Until today, I didn't know there was a hybrid motor-sail category. While this one is on the spendy side, it looks like it's worthy every penny. Keep doing what you do! It's a great way to find the yacht for you! Stay safe. FW&FS.
A beautiful boat. The owner has taken excellent care of her. Thanks for showing these classic beauty's 🤝🤝👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🇺🇸
Beautiful yacht. You guys should tour the larger 64' Cheoy Lee motorsailer. Her gorgeous big sister is just as impressive. ❤⛵👍🏾
This is my favorite boat I've seen on your channel. Beautiful. Thought about sailing fulltime till I started watching fulltime sailing channels and their constant, never ending need to be fixing broken items and endless maintenance requirements! Always something broken and needing repair or if it's currently working, it's going to break. Then there's the huge expense of haul outs and re-rigging, painting and on and on.
Yep.
sounds like fun.
Cleaning gutters, fixing roof tiles, changing tap washers, mowing lawns + pulling out weeds....
By FAR my favorite boat I've seen on this channel, or any other channel!
Absolutely gorgeous boat and great layout, and see it utilizes every inch of usable space for storage, now all I have to do is come up half a mill, but it's definitely worth every penny
I think of it like this. Ìn Australia 🇦🇺 at any rate our children are being expected to mortgage their entire working
lives for at least AUD1milliion to pay for a thrown together, knocked up 3-4 bedroom house in suburbia. Compare that to this beautiful home afloat. There's many other pro's and con's to a life afloat course and it all depends on the individual's prefs in the end.
All tours should be done in the rain. I loved the atmosphere. What a beautiful boat.
I’m not gonna lie. I had full chubby watching this boat tour start to finish. This is my dream lottery winning ticket purchase!! Absolute stunning sailboat
This has to be one of my favorites so far. Thanks for sharing.
"Where do I start?" Indeed! Extraordinary boat. Great review as always.
This is one of the coolest boats that you have shown us. Beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
I like that sail boat,I once sailed from LaSalle Ontario to Florida USA,I was 18 y o on a 62' reliance sail boat,a memorable trip! 1st time I seen 22'waves.
My kind of dream boat. Can only hope, or pray in terms of winning lotto to purchase a boat of such caliber. Absolutly Gorgeous.
Thank you
That's one of the most beautiful motorsailer I like. I could love living on one like that . Especially having 2 motor.
cheoy lee is my favorite builder......no one does it better
Great layout….two engines…..sails too, very interesting boat…..great features, 🥂
What a absolutely gorgeous perfect house!who needs land I'd never leave the boat except to get food ect but what a perfect boat I'd do anything to have a boat like this to live on the world would be the view outside and the view would change anytime you wished it ❤ pure joy
Gotta love any Cheoy Lee. Beautiful vessel.
Man, this is the perfect lay out. I think it edges out the Amel and the Rassy for interior lay out. Even though its probably slow as fuck under sail, still a super nice boat.
Slow so as to enjoy the journey. You can also motorsail.
How slow is F---? Sometimes I like it fast!
@@keithh3463 😂
Might edge them out on interior, .... Well knock them out of the field especially Amel but if I were crossing an ocean of rather be an amel or HalbergR any day... Mind you, for a couple hundred thousand more I could get a Kraken50 which is as good if not better than this inside and sails better than an Amel, Halbeg or anything else.
Lucky,
Supper is my favorite meal, right after breakfast.
And snacks.
I love this boat!
I absolutely love this boat and it would be perfect to leisurely sail/motor around the world. The steering wheel in the pilothouse looks like it came off the SS Minnow.
All i can say is wow! One of the most Beautiful boats i have seen. The only yachts i know that come close to this is Hylas and Passport yachts for the Interior and the Helm forget about it no one builds anything close to this. Thanks so much for sharing. Cheers.
This is the best sail boat I’ve seen so far. Awesome! Would own that in a heartbeat if I like sailing. To old to deal with sails. #1 boat.
Definitely would love something like that if it was in the budget. 😱
That boat is Beautiful. No Question. And well maintained.
Absolutely stunning! Perfect!
Beautiful, professionally maintained boat. Also note that the new teak decks are glued not screwed down. A huge plus if they properly filled the old holes and repaired any substrate issues. ( very important. Also a beautiful as she was I did notice water intrusion issues in the below decks brightwork. Ford Layman 90’s great engines. Had one in a prior boat, a trawler. It was a workhorse!
I looked for date such as dis/length ratio, SA / disp ratio and capsize formula. Couldn’t find them. Did you say a 77’ vertical clearance? Good for sailing, bad for intercostal.
Don’t judge it as a dog until you have all the data. My Cal 2-46 that some call a motor sailor could make 200 mile days! Water line and SA have a lot to do with this factor. This boats underbody looks good. Reduced wetted surface and a nice skeg protected prop. Choy Lee’s have a hit and miss reputation. Some well built and some more along the “leaky teaky build. Interesting boat.
Excellent presentation in every angle and description. Thanks
This Choi Lee Motor Sailor is over 30 years old, but she appears to be in fantastic condition and the price isn't too bat for a 53 foot boat. The layout was great, she would be able to party a lot more people than she could sleep, but who's going to want to take that rowdy mob with them for a week end or longer any way? All in all, I think this is a fabulous boat. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely stunning - thanks for the tour!
This one never gets old.
amazing boat
I could c myself pushing 72 getting up at least 4 times a nite visit head...very nice boat.
Just sleep in the shower! ;)
What a gorgeous boat!
Thanks for the Bright Cellars partnership! Perfect timing for a Birthday gift to my girlfriend 🎂
Much like a multi-level home: interesting floorplan. Thanks for the video!
Exactly what I want. Has more character than the newer Oceanics and the likes and I like the motor sailing aspect. Now I have a goal. Nice review.
The "Cheoy Lee 53" sails very well and more like a "real" sailboat so said one of the first to own one of these vessels. The owner was a skipper of an America's Cup 12m racing yacht, kind of think he was correct as she was fast and easy to sail. As a point of interest the double ender stern was a request by some of the owners who like her bigger sisters, a 63 ft CL and the 78 ft CL. Several of these three designs have sailed around the world, usually a 5 year voyage. That "high" steering station worked just well in serious heavy weather by the way.
All good info!
Great family boat as well. Would love for you to have talked about range via engine.
Nice stuff, how about some more nice sailing cats? Oh! Can you do a vid about salvage / abandoned / decommissioned "fleet(?) charters" & possibilities for reparations & splash.
WOW! I want this one! Thank you, even the wine commercial was cool.
You who keep saying the price is too high are missing the point. You could not have one built for less than 2 million. I was actually shocked at the price being so low.
I think the price is alittle on the high side when you compare to other later model second hand options .but there is a small segment of the market for this type boat .
Wow, I am not a fan of motor sail boats but this one is a gem.
That was a beautiful vessel wish I could talk my wife into a live aboard thank you for the tour
At the beginning of the review I was like I dunno looks kinda funky specially for that asking price, but by the end I was OMG this is a beauty and totally worth, gorgeous boat!
Motor boater, would make me consider a motor/sailing vessel...best boat you have shown...for me!
Not a bad price....I think it is one of these boats that is a mind twister...It is a 1990...looks great....looks like it has been well maintained....If it passes a survey....for a $500,000+ you still have to consider the year. Thank you...your videos are the best.
What an amazing live aboard and her price reflects it. I wonder how expensive it would be to modify her keel to either a bulb or wing type to bring her draft up to around 4.5 to 5 feet? Other than her draft being a bit deep for my tastes she's pretty much perfect. With a modification to her keel and possibly turning one of her double cabins into a work space/office she'd be my dream boat. I've always liked motor sailors and prefer them to either full on sail or power boats. The idea of being able to conserve fuel via sailing is very hard to pass up. I mean a boat like this is built and designed for those who don't really have to worry about money or set schedules. So even if she isn't the best sailor it doesn't matter if your not in a hurry. If you do need some speed those two diesels should give her enough to out run a storm if needed or meet some time requirement. It really is the best of both worlds IMHO. I do have to say at that price though you could possible find a very nice used Nord. Thanks for sharing her with us, Choy Lee's are one of my favorite builders especially when it comes to motor sailors...
So absolutely spectacular!
If I hit a large sum in a lottery I would want this and I would travel the World.
I would install a water-tight door into the engine room though.
Brilliant presentation. I agree with everything you said. Ita a gorgeous-looking boat. Thank you.
got to be the best boat iv ever seen
As for the comment that a person could not be on the bridge in a blow the keel is 10 tens. So having 200 pounds or 4 pounds of people weight is not going to change the dynamics. This is an ocean going, blue water boat. It also is in remarkable condition for a CL. Particularly of note is that the teak decks have be replaced and it looks like it was done professionally. A more apt criticism would be to be sure the tankage and SS work has be upgraded and even check for wiring issues. However, based on the video, this CL looks like to be a rare CL as it is in good shape everywhere. I would suspect the floor was replaced in the main part of the boat and teak and holly instead of parquet. IMO, that is another good sign the the tanks, etc were removed and replaced. For those with the money it would be worth a look. It will take you anywhere and you can stand up top in a blow.
I for one is ready to move aboard. I will make the boat part work later. That is a great place to be in any geographic area
I think I'm in love! Now to just win that dang lottery!
beautiful boat... if i knew how to sail and had the money i would surely consider one like that.
Over 1/2 a MILLION?? But what a beautiful vessel!!
I didn’t hear any technical information, e.g. engine make and size, turbos, hours. What is the draught? Speed under sail? Under power? I would have also expected some comment on the obvious water damage seen in the video. If you are not selling the boat then why can’t you provide more useful information? I know it looks nice and I know I’m looking at a galley which seems to actually need a lot of electricity to run. What batteries are fitted? How many amp hours, do you have to plug in to a mooring or run a generator to eat? Water maker? I hope you take this as useful comment.
Very nice. Layout is very much like our boat except for having a pilot house/flybridge.
Enjoy!! Loved the boat tour as well😊
You two are doing very good job.
Great looking boat, but over priced for her age, but in this market I'm sure that it'll sale. A performance sailor will hate this boat as well as someone just sailing in the Bahamas, the draft can be an issue. It feels stable in moderate seas and even when heeled over. I totally agree that it's a fantastic liveaboard.
Nice yacht but price is certainly well into cat territory which is where I'd be headed
For the money, I would go it's bigger brother, the 63'. But definitely a serious passagemaker. Those pair of ultra reliable Perkins 4-236 would chew around 4li/hr ea @ 8.5kn for a range of 2745nm out of the 2590 li of diesel carried plus they sail okay, so crossing large expanses of ocean would be relatively stress free.
Such a cool boat. Thanks for the tour
That is awesome sailing boat thank for sharing with us....
Brilliant.
Well, if you have to sail a motorsailer more slowly, you will certainly enjoy the voyage more! This is a beauty! And I would get plenty of exercise walking around admiring my own boat! What were you filming with? That was a really small camera! It looked even smaller than a GoPro Session.
Incredible motor sailer!
I'm not usually a fan of motor sailors but I must admit, that is a very nice boat in fantastic condition. Would make a great liveaboard. The only ding for me personally is that stern, it looks chopped off from a design perspective.
This is the only non-catamaran sailboat I've seen which could actually contain my family. We've got three adults and two teenagers, so we're far too many for most of the smaller monohulls; plus the stairs/ladders on them are tricky enough that I'd be worried for my 72-year-old brother. You don't want to fall and break a hip when you're a thousand miles from land.
But this is not only gorgeous, it's got ordinary stairs that even aging, wobbly legs could handle; and it's got enough berths for all of us. My only real concern is whether we could sail it... it's a lot of boat and we're no experts! But wow, it's stunning, and looks so comfortable -- both to live in and to sail.
Stunning!
I really loved that boat!
When Roni isn't along , we don't get to see inside of every last storage spot.
Love this boat
Beautiful vessel
Fine boat. It could use windshield wipers for the enclosed pilot house windows.
What a beautiful ship
Gorgeous boat... just wish I could see it sailing :(
I wonder what it was like to step back on your shoes after rain...? At 1.05 I saw you leave them out a front of the boat... Anyway compliment for a great video and fantastic boat.
I have watched your videos for years thank you. I have no problem with your commercial. You have bills.
Just WOW...
Parkay floors in the aft cabin.
How cool is that?
10 bucks says it's sold by now????
Beautiful.....Although a little steep in the price for the age and type...over all great looking vessel for intercoastal cruising and such ...... the berths at the bow are somewhat tight for guest but that maybe a good thing ....they won't stay long😆🤣
Cheers well done on the walk through.
Fairwinds from the @captains.chair
Great for the older sailor who isn't ready for a full launch just yet .
Great tour!
What a boat. I think this would be nice to cruise the world. Add some solar and a wind generator, maybe new lithium batteries for 12kw/h and you don't even need a generator at night. Get the washing machine back in and you're good to go.
and water maker...you are correct!
This and the 63" have me crying too that I can't just win the lotto, chuck everything and move in permanently with a licensed pilot to teach me how to care for her. It will have to be enough just to see the tours. I hope she sells quickly.
09:04
Your 'pilothouse' resembles a greenhouse... probably best for high latitudes.
Or a garden.
This is a wonderful &beautiful boat that l' ve seen. What's the name of manufacturer? How much budget is this kind of boat for?
How would one get those engines out? Are there hatches above?
Watched the tour of the 63 ' before.
I would live on this Boat.
The 53 Cheoy Lee actually sails pretty well for a motorsailor. It will do 7 Knotts no problem. Great sea boat as well. Only one problem, as they age they are known as Teaky leaky. But if properly maintained they are a great all around vessel.
First evidence was obvious at the base of the companionway (10:14). Something else iffy was also going on with the ventilation and dampness - flacked varnish on several doors/panels throughout.
Love your videos!
Beautiful!
Guys you are very good
Why was the Epirb located inside?Shouldn't it be mounted on the outside helm?
How much fuel does she hold and does she have a water maker?
Beautiful
