    Completely agree. Better than my Zfc, but at 3 times the price and two years younger that is no surprise. I don't want a bigger, heavier better Zfc I want a D500 replacement without having to drop 4K!

    You set the SS dial to the SS you want, then use the front or rear dial for 1/3rd adjustments. I did it on my Fuji xt2 all of the time.

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  11 месяцев назад +1

      Indeed. Many more steps than just adjusting one command dial especially if you need to make a major adjustment. If you like the two-dial method, I'm happy for you, but personally, I find it to be a pain, and more steps than are needed in a modern camera. As I mentioned in the video, there's a reason cameras evolved away from those awesome-looking dials. That reason in my opinion is efficiency.

    I was very interested in this camera for its retro looks and functionality with a 24MP sensor but with xspd7. I love my Z8 and Z6iia but I miss my Z50. I was able to throw that camera in my bag and take it anywhere. If they can jam 10 bit record and xspeed7 I'll bite on a Z50ii.

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  11 месяцев назад

      I didn't even think about a Z50 II but I'd probably pull the trigger on that too but I'd rather have something that uses the ENEL-15 battery so it would need a slightly larger body than a z50. Z70 or Z90 is more of what I'm looking for. I hate the Z50/Zfc battery. It's just not good.

    • @Ben_Stewart
      @Ben_Stewart 11 месяцев назад

      @@PhilThach that's was one of the down falls of the Z50 was that tiny battery but if XSP7 and 10-bit record are in the cards they will need to update that battery size.

    I agree with your assessment. I'm excited they have brought down the Expeed 7 & autofocus. I'm hoping they will release the Nikon Z6iii/7iii with this soon! I'm always surprised at Nikon sometimes. I just don't see the market for these retro style cameras.

    • @WhoIsSerafin

      I sure do! When you do it right, you still can't get the x100v after over a year. M4/3 users are begging every live stream for a Pen F 2. The market is there if you do it right.

      @@PhilThach It would have been me too. I really wanted the Df when it came out. After watching your videos and thinking about how i use my camera the dials wouldn’t be used. I’m holding out for the Z6iii replacement. In the meantime I’m happy with my z6ii.

  • @woprdroid
    @woprdroid 11 месяцев назад

    Completely agree. I had an X-T3 and an and X-T4 and neither were comfortable to use even with grips added. I sold them and ended up with a Canon RP then R8 due to lightweight with a great grip. I feel that retro styled cameras like the Zf which look fantastic, but only work with small/pancake primes. Once you put a larger lens the concept falls apart.

  • @robwinklerphoto2189
    @robwinklerphoto2189 11 месяцев назад +3

    I've been waiting for a flagship mirrorless DX, too, but doesn't the Zf make this less likely? A DX flagship would have about the same price as the Zf, which seems like bad market segmentation to me. Maybe it's finally time for stubborn D500/Z50 users like me to jump ship, unless NIkon sees comments like this and allays our fears with press leaks.

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  11 месяцев назад +1

      That's a good point. What is more likely than a DX flagship is a not quite flagship APSC camera like canon has done with the R7. Something around $1500

    • @robwinklerphoto2189
      @robwinklerphoto2189 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@PhilThach That would be the right price, but then they might not offer the features I'm looking for, such as Z8-style autofocus and a silent shutter that lets me take photos of hummingbirds in flight, which is very difficult with the Z50. At $1,500, I imagine they could call it the Z50 II. We'll see. I think Nikon would sell a whole lot of these.

      I have a z50.. which I love. Coming from full frame DSLRs (D3/D700). Nothing has made me desire for full frame yet until z9, z8…however both out of my budget. Z5 was nice but did not garner my attention as the z50 and Z24-70|2.8s gives me PRO results. The full frame Zf puts full frame with new af system in my budget. I’ve pre-ordered the 180600|6.3 but getting tired of waiting 😢. Maybe I should get the Zf (orange /green). As far as grip. Every Z camera outside Z 8,Z9 is small in my big hands (I can palm a basketball) easily. When I got z50 with its grip it was small also but comfortable with two fingers. Now when I mount the Z24-70|2.8s I picked up the camera and lens with left hand then brought up right hand to shoot. Many months later I have become so smooth and fast with this technique, I will never go back to gripping the camera first. But guess what I also noticed. The rubber grips on the camera is still intact after 3 years! In Bermuda 🇧🇲 with its high humidity this phenomena often happens after 2 years. I’m assuming with less contact with the camera the oils on my hands etc. have less of an impact. I also wrap the camera cord around my wrist thus when I do walk about it can dangle from 2 fingers. I say this also to say because I shoot with a Fuji xPro 3 and the 18|1.4 when doing street photography. This camera is like that of the Zf as far as grip is concerned. With smaller lenses I pick up the whole rig with one swoop of my hands. So I guess what I’m trying to say is that if you have larger hands you will be fine.

      At an attempt to make a Camera for everybody Nikon implemented a thin camera for people with small hands, larger hands buy the grip. As far as a Shutter-Speed dial is concerned the whole idea of the Dials is to slow you down and also to teach the process of using, the speeds and aperture‘s to control your exposure and think about which ones you are using. But let’s face it the third step Shutter-Speed setting is much more useable at times. If you don’t need specific speeds, use the third step at least you have the option. It’s a very capable camera for what it looks like, although I’m looking at buying the Zfc because I already have a Z5 and I made my own grip. I want the crop sensor. With pixel shift it works well as a high res landscape camera as well. Something that no other Nikon has.Cheaper than a Z7. Good review though thanks for sharing.😊regards Gerry

  • @starbase218
    @starbase218 11 месяцев назад +1

    As some others have said, this is probably a technology testbed with things like the improved IBIS and pixel shift. I'm equally excited that all that will come to what will probably be the Z6 III and Z7 III. I can't imagine that the Z6 II will get many sales right now. So I would expect a successor before long. The Z7 II still has a resolution advantage at a competitive price point, so its sales will probably not be as affected. But I would expect both to be replaced, hopefully sometime early next year. And yes, they could also do with more variation in the APS-C line.

    One of the reasons I bought the Fuji X-S20 was that large grip on a small camera. I like video too so I’m fine with the PASM which is more handy for custom settings. Those retro cameras are nice looking though

    Great points on the new Nikon Phil. I saw that the shutter dial has a 1/3 step setting. I wonder if that would allow setting the shutter speeds between say, 1000 and 2000. Anyway I agree with you. It’s a beautiful retro camera and looks a lot like my FM2, but I would say using all the top dials for setting exposure would be much slower than the different dials I’m used to. Still a beautiful camera though.

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  11 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you I sure there is a contrived way to get to the in between speeds, but it would be easier to only have to use one command dial for shutter speed.

    I really like the old school styling of the Zf and Fuji models. The lack of grip seems like it would add to the vintage feel. I was pleasantly surprised when I first saw Nikon release this, even though it's not something I would ever buy.
    I was going to try to make a comment about Olympus changing dials on an EM 5 or 10 to complete the look. It occurred to me stickers or 3D printed dial caps on a used body would be cheaper😂

    The grip and the smaller SD card is a deal breaker for me. I do like the looks and if I was buying a dedicated street and travel camera, this would be it. That camera is not really made for long lenses that weigh around 4 + pounds. It's made more for pancake type lenses. That's why the 40mm it's in one of the bundles. It's not a pancake lens but it's close enough. I love that lens. It's a great street photography lens and will work at a portrait lens. I mostly shoot in manual mode and I use auto ISO in changing light conditions. I don't have time to change the ISO back and forth. I'm excited too about this camera because it gives me a glimpse of what might be in the z6/z7 III bodies. But I really want that z8.

  • @neklamp2431
    @neklamp2431 11 месяцев назад

    You are right about the grip but I think that Smallrig has solved the problem. The shutter speed dial is something I haven't used either. The other big con on the zfc and the zf is it's size. If you put a big lens on them, they get lost and look ridiculous! I wish Nikon would make smaller lenses in size. They would look amazing not only on the zfc and zf but on all their cameras. Nikon is pairing the zf with "the brick" the 24-70 f4. It looks horrible and feels like your doing weight lifting!

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  11 месяцев назад +1

      And that 24-70 f/4 is pretty small compared to many Z lenses. I think it looks great with the 40 f/2 lens.

    Very impressive camera with its retro style design borrowed from Nikon FM2 ! But sadly it is not provided by those old quality retro style Nikkor lenses! Those available or provided by Nikon (40mm & 28mm) are not quality lenses and are cheaply plastic lenes - no comparison to Nikkor old lenses ! After all, it is the lens that takes pictures and not the body . I rather go for Fujifilm with its fine & well made metal lenses .

    This new Nikon has retro functionalities....so it should be a photographic tool only and not a mix with uncomplete videos functionalities. So I would have love this Nikon to have none of the video features and the appropriate photo tilt screen. Video and photo are two different craft that use different tools. The sensors should be different, the processing, the shutter etc.... These kind of Suisse knives do not satify photographers neither videographers.
    That is why you see people constantly changing gear because they never get what they are looking for.
