Nikon shooter here who didn't think he wanted a Zf but after seeing all these videos I'm starting to change my mind. Looks like a very interesting camera. A grown up Zfc.
Same here. I didn't care about the Zfc until I saw the real thing. And now this is lovely and fun.
I'm a bit bummed that the Z7-II is not getting the love of some of the new AF features that we were promised with the dual Exspeed6 processors which added capacity for more over its predecessor, but I totally love this camera.
I was considering a Z8, but perhaps this is all I really need. It also scratches the itch for the classic Ux.
That’s why these videos are made
I pre-ordered one today. I intend to replace my Z 6II with it while complementing my Z 9.
Camera Conspiracies (also Canadian) wasn't positive at all about the Video of the Zf and says it's technically the same as the Z6II.
Love the friendship you guys still keep.
Well it's hard to not be friends when one is married to Evelyn.
Lol. Jordan is married to Evelyn. 😂
The friendship known as marriage.
Nikon D750 shooter here. I was hoping for a sub 3000 CAD$ full frame with dual cards and better AF. Here it is! Plus the retro look 😍. I was starting considering changing brand but this will keep me a Nikon shooter.
having Chris and Jordan in camera store tv does give me retro feel 😂
😂 that is great to see you guys nearly all together.
I was Nikon shooter and moved 5 years ago to Fuji and now it could be the Nikon camera to bring me back to FF Nikon (The ZFc was too plasticky and there was a lack of lenses, plus the AF was average. But this one OMG 😱 I want one ☝️
We just missed Dave.
So sweet to see the happy couple. Great review...cant get enough of the Zf. Its like a dream camera. Hope to get it soon
We are adorable sometimes 🥰
As a 1st gen Z6 shooter, I would have preferred the direct upgrade, but this is a very compelling camera in its own right. It totally gives me nostalgia for my original FM.
Probably next year. If Sony have mercy it could have the 33mp sensor. If your z6 is serving you well I will wait until next year.
If I were a Nikon shooter, this is the camera I would get. Well done Nikon! Very cool.
ZF is surely the premium automatic transmission and drivetrain engineering company. Nice to see them branching out into high end consumer cameras.
😂
I am tired of acting like the ZF outperforms twin clutches, it doesn't and never will.
@@patrickstonetree1 Hold on now, I dispute that. The ZF will probably last much longer under more load than any DCT. The TC multiplies torque and allows wear free starts while towing and it doesn’t have the complication of multiple complex synchro units being robotically changed in the background in anticipation of either an up or downshift, always prone to some wear on the mechanism. I have both a Hyundai/Kia 8 speed wet DCT and a Ford 10 speed [and an older six speed ZF licensed Ford] currently and I know which I’d trust best long term and it has a torque convertor. Convertors are good, just ask any photographer.
Jordan gets on camera and there's a locust invasion going behind his back, perfect timing.
I was waiting for someone to notice. Lol. It was supposed to be pretty ocean & butterflies. Oops
What a wonderful reunion! This really brought a smile to my face.
Love the retro design and all the features, particularly the IBIS and low light autofocus. I'm a Sony shooter but I think I'm going to get one of these with the 40mm as a complimentary camera.
I didn’t think I would want a full frame classic Nikon. I did have the Zfc as my weekend camera for a time and loved it. I then realised I cannot afford to have three mirrorless cameras so I got rid of the Zfc and kept my two Z6ii … but since I love the Zfc as a nice good looking camera I didn’t want to part from it so far. So my daughter got it as a present. :) she still lives in our house so it is not far away. … and then Nikon announced this. A similar good looking camera that is as good a weekend camera as the Zfc (I mean better) but also better camera for 99% of all I do with my Z6ii cameras!!! I hate it when manufacturers do this!!! No medication helps me fight my G A S gear acquisition syndrome… so … I think one of my Z6ii must leave my house soon!!!
Great fun seeing all 3 of you fine people together. I particularly love the locust swarm behind Jordans head. Nice touch. LOL
I recently completed a complete switch to Fujifilm, GFX and X, but this camera just makes my old Nikon-love itch, I love it!
having two different sized card slots is weird, but I don't see it as an issue.
I'm really excited about this camera, and most likely will buy one. Nikon checked all marks I need with this one. Although, as a hybrid shooter, I'm torn apart a bit between Lumix S5IIx and this one.
I will wait. It's not time to decide, I think the market will settle in a pair of years. I'm between Panasonic L, Nikon Z and Canon RF...
They hit every mark except for one thing. Should’ve came out with 50 1.8 pancake with this. I already have the 40 f2 and it’s amazing but ZF with retro 50 1.8 pancake would have been awesome!
I pre-ordered the red variant, will arrive tomorrow. My first Nikon ever (analog or digital). So excited!
What are the odds tcs can sponsor some new headphones for Evelyn?
On a serious not though, great video! Good to see Chris and Jordan back on the channel!
Haha I was borrowing Jordan's. They worked great!
This is the camera Fuji shooters always wanted. Classic camera layout and a full frame sensor. The only question is why Nikon waited so long to build a camera like this.
Think im about to go sell my X100V for this 😅
@@Ponskippayou bought x100v for all the wrong reason then.
@@trym2121 yep, you’re right. Thus why I sold it
Sony and Canon still don’t have an answer..
Now we just need a few nikkor primes with an aperture ring. Otherwise I don’t see the point of this.
I am a Z6 shooter and I'm glad they are putting put the Zf first! This is the camera I always wanted from Nikon.
love the romcom vibes
You guys .. come back to TCS The Camera Store .. I have known you guys through this when I was the Pentax fan and you were the only one who did reviews of it and ended up buying fuji and all credit goes to you guys. Please come back.
Why? You can still keep up with all our shenanigans on the PetaPixel RUclips channel. There’s some Pentax and Fuji videos coming out soon!
- Jordan
Thanks so much for sharing another wonderful video like always 🤗
After this announcement i go for the Nikon - shape/form factor > all. full frame, hidden display, 4 video - thats what i wanted plus the pretty, sexy design (im an old film-shooter, can not deny my roots) the Z F plus 40 and 28mm = perfect combo. and yes I. AM MORE THAN EXITED 🤩
9:10 FYI you cannot use a threaded cable release.
Everything about the camera looks great but where are the matching retro Z-mount lenses? We only have the 28mm and 40mm SE, and whatever Voigtlander can bring to the table. Adapting F mount lenses sounds great on paper but adding the FTZ adapter is clunky and goes against the aesthetic that the camera is striving for.
Nikon is doing a great job here same with the Z7 and 8 great to see this
Leica d lux 7 has also the AF movement via the touchscreen. Composing with the screen, you can move the AF feeld with your finger and composing with the VF than you can move the AF feeld with your thumb relatively to your thumb movement. - It work perfect.
I love the design and have pre-ordered one.
I am super tempted. However, as a traveller, I was wishing for an updated Zfc due to it's compact size and smaller lenses. I might just buy this for street and portrait work and a used Zfc (for travel). I still use my D750 for paid work.
I'll tell you a little secret. As soon as Nikon zf selling much better than off. Zfc gonna die. Just look at Sony as an example. A6xxx is pretty much after thought camera now. The technology does trickle down but that's it. Lens developments are like winning lottery
As a Fuji-shooter this is the first camera from a different brand, that really got my attention. A looks great, the handling seems to be great... In combination with the 40mm lens... could be a great tool.
Hey Chris, with an fuji XT cameras you could also set the camera to front and rear dial command to use it like a pasm camera.
Regarding the Z6iii, I just don't see how they could announce that camera with the same sensor as 5 years ago. They need a new sensor for that camera and probably some new features. But it needs to come next for sure.
I started out with a Canon T6s. 4 years ago I moved from Canon to Nikon. One of the reasons was because of Canon's use of the cripple hammer. After the z9 came out the z8 came out. It has a few things that the z9 doesn't have. They're not major features. Some of which I wouldn't use. Now we have the zf and it has features that neither the z8 or z9 have. I'm sure they'll get them eventually since it's mostly a software update. I don't know if Nikon did anything different with the sensor in the zf to give it better IBIS or to allow for the stabilization not being in the center. I heard the sensor isn't locked when the camera is off so that might be something that the z8 and z9 won't get. I won't be getting the zf but this does excite me to see what comes out in the z6 III and z7 III. I'll probably save up for the z8 because I don't like screen blackout in burst mode. I don't see the z6 III or z7 III having a stacked sensor. I'll be shocked if they do.
What a great trio! I love you guys :-)
Awe thanks 💖
Although am a sony shooter, this is such a tempting little camera....
Well done Nikon 👌👌👌
I which it had the 45MP of the Z9 to match the Fuji x100VI's high MP's. I'm very happy with the micro SD card. Indeed better than just having 1.
I know I want it for the advanced spec's - I could see this as being very good for the running race I shoot every September .. After having shot with the OG Z6, Z50 and Z fc over the past few years. I have been wondering why Nikon didn't develop the Zf first - but good things come to those who wait. I think I will keep my Z6 as a backup, and the Z50 is usually my go-to wildlife camera, as it pairs really well with the FTZ adapter and 200-500 f/5.6 which is my rig. The Z FC however - not sure where it fits in after getting a Zf - if I will sell it or keep it. We'll have to see.
I think it's an excellent body. The main issue with the second card slot is not the fact that it's MicroSD, but rather that it's UHS-I instead of UHS-II. This is clearly to differentiate higher-end models.
Methinks the micro SD card is brilliant. Modern laptops have no card slot at all. Even newer laptops geared towards photographers might have only a micro SD card slot with SD card slots becoming rare.
So a micro SD card directly written in camera is good.
I might even like to have a synchronize later option in camera. So that at the end of the day I can have a true backup even if speeds are different.
I think practically, people who use it will appreciate it.
Micro SD cars slots on laptops is back.
Is there a hard control to change the drive mode, or do you still have to go into the menu?
If I was a Nikon shooter I would buy this camera in a heartbeat. And I might buy it anyway. I would want retro looking lenses to go with it, but I don't know how good the SE lenses are. And I wish there were more retro looking lenses to choose from.
One thing I never understood, people say they love the physical dials, fair enough, so do I, but then like 95% or more of people just throw it into aperture priority with auto iso (or even P, I've noticed a lot more people using P these days with how good the cameras are getting and how a lot allow P with adjustments) meaning the only dial they really would need/use is the exposure comp dial. With my Fuji cameras I had I would find myself going to a shutter speed on the dial, then fine tweaking it with a command dial nearly every shot...which was annoying, so I just set it to a command dial and basically never used the dial for shutter speed. A second dial was fine for exposure comp, honestly when it comes to physical dials, I get the most use out of an aperture control, but even then I could just have it on a dial.
I was debating on this or a G9 II, but I think I'll just go with the G9 II once enough people have shaken it down real world. Z isn't really that expensive, relatively speaking, if I were to jump to Z for FF, but Nikon kind of burned me when they confirmed they got my ~1.5K USD of trade-in gear (minimum) and then just ghosted me never giving me any credit back on the purchase it was linked to or in general. They made a 1200 dollar transaction cost me 2500+ USD, which thankfully my bank just did a refund after I explained to them what had happened. I just about broke even after selling what I bought off them (Z5 open box + 40mm f2). I've got a whole collection of MFT lenses I love, so the G9 II makes more sense at the end of the day. Maybe by the time I see G9 II's discounted or used for a fair price, the mythical Pen F II or maybe even a GX8 Mark II will be announced. Until then my E-M1.III, E-M5.II, and E-P7 will carry me.
true thats how i shoot basicly all the time. Just put it on auto iso , Aperture mode , minimum shutter speed option in menu to whatever the situation im shooting in and i only really ever use the exposure comp.
The physical controls would make sense if the camera didn't give direct feedback through the EVF and/or back LCD (and live histogram), and we'd take light readings from a standalone light meter. As it is, however, going back and forth between the dials and live feedback is just more time-consuming and doesn't contribute in the least to the final outcome.
You can just chuck in a 1tb microsd in there & have yourself 1tb of internal storage & never remove it until it fills up.
Love the threaded shutter release button for cable connection. Don't need no batteries, don't need no phone apps, don't need no credit card...... that's the power of love, oops sorry, got carried away.😀
nothing better then when these three get together.
I am thrilled about this camera. Mine arrives tomorrow. I may be in the minority but I am glad to have 24mp with the better autofocus of z8/9. This is going to be a low light beast. I know there is some controversy about the auto ISO. I think it is overblown but hope they make the dial setting take precedence which should be fixable with firmware. Now I am hoping voitlander releases a z mount 28mm to go with the 40 I have.
im on the same boat with voigtlander releasing a native 28mm z mount they just announced the 28mm 1.5 m mount but im hoping they have it planned for z mount as well🥲
With the release of the Nikon ZF i am interested in what Nikon will do with the Nikon Z5 Mark 2
I completely fell for the ZFC, preferable it should be a fullframe, but because of the georgeous look l could live with a crop camera, BUT the lack of ibis became a deal breaker so l had to fight off the urge to buy it.
And now the ZF came😍 Almost as georgeous, but with everything l hoped for and +++ of more goodies.
I need to but this camera even if l have to let my kidneys go😊
Damn Nikon…
Need a range finder version of ZF now.
My first camera was a Nikon FM; my second was a Nikon F2-so I am understandably interested in this new camera. Thanks for another great review!
I would love one, but I got the Z6ii. I don't feel the need to get rid of that to replace it for a Zf, for the extra cost...
I need to actually see and hold one, then if all is well after the early adopters have debugged the thing thoroughly I might get one for myself. The debugging is key as Nikons do seem to need debugging.
The want and the needs are blurred by that retro zf cam
Highly interested in this cam.
24mpx, though? I expected 36 or better.
Micro SD?! What a mess. At min, 2 SD … i guess its better than 1 SD only.
I want to get a chance to “feel” the cam. Can it compare to my Nikon FE? Size, grip, durability, weather sealing, Ai-s lens coupling?
Ive got a whole Zeiss lineup waiting to be put back in regular rotation.
The better autofocus was absolutely necessary indeed. What price level will the Z6iii be then ? 3000.- ? If so it means that for those who want the specs of the Zf but don't care for for the vintage casing it will ve harsh
As a Sony shooter who hasnt really considered anything else in the last 8ish years. I really want this.
I believe this is really Nikon FM4D the true inheritor of Nikon FM3A. It needs a removable viewfinder with multiple options and a removable display with abilities pair up with any smartphone and water proofed weather proof dust proof and sealed really well.
What I don’t get is why linking the rotational VR axis to the AF point is better? Like, why are you more likely to induce rotation around your subject? Shouldn’t the camera compensate for wherever the axis happens to be?
Also, the micro SD slot is UHS-1, so there is a capability difference.
Hey. I am selling my Fuji Xfs and consolidate with my Z9 + Zf + Tamron 35-150. 135MM Plena and maybe the Z 14-24 f2.8 - that's it (plus a small 35mm or 40mm for travel).. One system two feelings: Fuji-feeling and pro Z9.... 🙂 Use cases Portraits, events, weddings etc.
Re; SD card slots. It would have been nice, if Nikon would have incorporated an additional full size SD card slot in the optional grip...along with additional battery capacity.
The Nikon Zf does not appear to have the User modes like the other full frame Z cameras. Am I missing something?
Should I get nikon zf based off that I still have 3 afs lenses from my previous dslr time or should I get sony A7Cii based off that I have been building a collection of modern e mount lenses?
If all it has is an old-style mechanical remote shutter release that means it will be tough to use the Zf for astrophotography, despite its likely good low-light performance, as it won’t work with an external intervalometer, time lapse controllers or any external camera control software that uses a remote shutter port. That would be taking a step backward for the sake of retro design.
Why wouldn't it wouldn't work with external intervalometers? They connect to a port not to the screw of the type leaf shutter release.
Awesome video!
I am surprised Nikon chose to put all of these new features in the Zf. I would have thought they would have released a Z6iii first. This is kind of a Sony move where they release a less expensive niche camera with features their popular models don't have. What are Z6ii owners going to do now, buy a Zf or wait for the Z6iii somewhere down the road? I am buying a Zf for my back up/travel camera, but it is replacing my D750, so kind of a no-brainer for me. Goodbye to crappy autofocus at last.
This goes back to their strategy during the old battles against Canon around 2010. They didn't really hold features back to fit their release schemes or product hierarchy. If they could shove in a feature from a higher end product without costs snowballing, they'd often do it. Meanwhile, Canon were deleting sync pins from their hotshoes.
The better autofocus was absolutely necessary indeed. What price level will the Z6iii be then ? 3000.- ? If so it means that for those who want the specs of the Zf but don't care for for the vintage casing it will be harsh.
It doesn’t have “puddle mode” for Chris though, maybe next firm ware update.
Had one ordered within minutes of release.
Nice!
hi! love the zf so far. was just wondering if the zf can do raw video out through hdmi (just like the z6ii). anyone know?
Having ordered the ZF right away and called nikon to get NPS to expedite it, I then ordered the SmallRig grip. The grip arrived today… hmmm. 😂
This camera is also interesting for the non Z system users, I mean just as /one camera one lens/ combo.
Agreed 👍
Camera testers are not allowed to test the threaded cable release port because the first use would scratch and make the camera no longer mint.
Have the microphone preamps been improved over the Z6?
Nice camera.
This is the perfect hipster camera Fujifilm users have been waiting for 😂
Indeed. Just waiting on a few Nikkor primes with an aperture ring and I’ll be selling my Fuji gear.
So it appears as though Nikon is not doing NPS priority shipping on the Zf… at least at this point.
I just imagine the micro SD is last resort internal memory. Like what Leica and Hassy are doing with internal memory
'We have Chris and Jordan from PetaPixel here....boooohoooo, bring in the eggs, rotten salad and tomatoes!!!' :D
But I guess you cannot do that to Jordan :D

@@thatjordandrake something along the lines how you were parr of the Camera Store TV. Nothing to serious here, just a harmless joke
Been struggling between this or an XT5.. I really love the Fuji system, but that difference in low light matters for me. Any thoughts?
100% Zf but I'm biased, I used Df for 10 years maybe (found it at 400 shutter at a really really discounted price). FX sensor will beat Dx sensors for low light, assuming you have same speed lenses and assuming that you have enough depth of field. Now I use Z7II which is a different beast with really high megapixels and in the era of AI tools, I believe a higher megapixel count will usually win with the best lenses even in low light. Another really big thing with Zf is the improved image stabilization which will make a big difference in handheld shots. So to conclude: super low light, astro etc: FX for sure. Low light handheld: if low shutter speeds ok for your subject, best body stabilization wins this game but FX shadows again will be cleaner. You control light: Go for big megapixels if you can afford it. The Zf is like a bargain at this price point with its hardware.
Also a lot more things to consider here. How much are you invested in Fuji lenses? I was invested heavily in Nikon FX lenses so thought it was a brainer for me but now I use autofocus adapter and almost solely use E-mount lenses adapted (with perfectly fine af for my needs) unless I'm using a Nikon tele lens or AIS lenses for fun/specific look. Sony system has the better lenses for the enthusiast and a lot more choices. I like Nikon bodies regardless whether Zf/Df or modern style but Sony are very capable tools also with better lens selection (I lose weather sealing when I use with adapter and also one more point of contact that can fail. The things we do for love (of our Systems))
@@nat-lj8kt I have purposefully stayed away from investing in one brand until I make a choice. I’ve been shooting on canon FD lenses with an XT30ii which has been very fun. I want to continue my vintage lense use, but I find I’m not using film simulations nearly as much, because the raws are actually looking better.
So yeah.. I’m not sure what I wanna do yet. I prefer the vintage body layout and smaller size. Sony is probably my most practical choice… but I really like that ZF man
@@ataleoftwomusic Zf with Megadap sony E adapter (probably needs firmware update) would be very sexy and work great overall. I use Sony 50mm f1.2 GM, Sigma 20mm f1.4 art E version(mostly astro), and some Voigtlander E manual lenses (which focus better than Z native voightlander due to electronic rangefinder working) and enjoy every moment of it ( on Z7II but experience would probably be same or even better on Zf except size of lens vs size of body issues)
Pretty cool to see the gruesome

does the video have time recording limitation? watching from Nairobi Kenya
2 hours and 5 minutes 4K/24-30P for some weird reason. But you can start recording again right after as long as you have the battery life.
Well, the main problem for us in photography is that the Nikon Zf is a retro camera with about 24Mp. Nothing wrong with that, but here in Norway it's just $ 100 cheaper than a brand new Fuji GFX 50S with a kit lens. Yes, both with kit lenses. At the end what do you prefer, a 135 sensor or a medium format sensor and a kit lens for the same price. I think the Nikon Zf is $ 1000 to expensive.
GFX in Canada I $5000. Zf is $2800. Are you sure Fuji is not twice the price?
@@mlai2546 Yes, I'm sure,

Fujifilm GFX 50S II + GF 35-70mm f/4,5-5,6 40 945 NOK
You can check the prices at Scandinavianphoto + no
In todays US $ - Nikon $ 3700 - Fuji $ 3798
Prices is with 25% VAT
I'm a photograph and not a videograph. You can guess twice which camera I would bought.
@@mlai2546 Prices at B&H

FUJIFILM GFX 50S II Medium Format Mirrorless Camera with 35-70mm Lens and Bag Kit
$3,699 + VAT = 4624 = NOK 49845
Kind of depends where your priorities lie. For example how many Z mount lenses will Nikon and 3rd parties make, vs how many GF lenses there will ever be? How affordable are the lenses you would want? And if you're buying used lenses, which system is going to offer the best value and availability? On B&H, looks like the cheapest GF lens is $1000 and most are a lot more. B&H has 34 GF lenses. And 206 Z mount, 74 of them Nikkor. And the ZF styled primes are 'only' $306.
@@Ruylopez778 If I have one autofocus GF lens, I'm happy with either the kit lenses 35-70 or the 50/3.5. Prefer the last one. Otherwise, I have many T&S, but also Shift lenses that cover the GFX sensor and so on, but also many telephoto lenses. Has the legendary Nikkor 105/2.5 AIS which gives just as beautiful images with GFX as it has always done with Nikon cameras and which many others cover the sensor completely.
My lenses either Nikkor or Zuiko work fine with my m43 cameras, as it also does with the Canon 5D MkII and GFX. It is my thinking that everything should be usable with whatever system I have with me. GFX and m43 systems are the perfect combo, last even with Speedbooster.
I have no need for Autofocus, but fine with one that is weather sealed. My cameras are always in manual mode.
Finally, you must remember that these are only tools to achieve what you want, images. Whether it is digital, analogue, m43, 135, MF or LF format.
Nobody wants to explain how Zf shoots in Auto ISO mode. Do any of the dials work, or do they become worthless?
I am relieved a retro camera has dual card slots.
Just like the old days, when I refused to shoot anything other than dual film-roll cameras.
🤣
19:12 I don't believe there is any model that shoots video to both cards.
❤❤
What is the matter with me. Auto requires me to set 5 perameters to make it work. Easier to just use manual.
In Sweden it costs 500 euro more than a Sony A7iv. Very cool camera but to expensive here.
Why would you even need 8 stops of VR in a white angle lens?
Is the 10-bit 4:2:2 or 4:2:0??

@@thatjordandrake Crazy coincidence. Did you know you’re both on youtube photography channels? You have a lot in common, and I’m not one to play matchmaker... but the coincidences are crazy.
(Also, as an aside, you yelling at Chris off mic and off camera is an incredibly funny running gag. Love your work!)
Nikon Z remains a closed system for practical purposes. Mismatched card slots are useless. Hard pass from me. It's really just a Z6 III.
Fuji XT (apsc) is death ! Nikon ZF (silver) live ! ;))))
For 98% of us for example a Canon 6D would have been plenty.
Thank me later.
Tbh… Nikon has, in the past few years, moved from a position of innovator, to cashing in… an example of this point… Their mad race to create the Z cameras, left many stones unturned… the first iterations of all models were an affront to any professional, and what they really left out as missed opportunities, is the way they “ported the autofocus settings from DSLR to mirrorless”, while not at all looking to how they could rework those settings. So, now in a second generation of Z-series, they’re still stuck on rather rigid preset sizes and options for focus points; contrast this to Fuji, where autofocus points and groups can all be incrementally resized as desired… a radical difference in conceptually getting the most out of mirrorless. Nikon has also never (!) had handling issues, so this “retro”, is not dedicated or serious at all, it’s a “styling for Nikon”, while being a philosophy for Fuji - point in case - lenses lacking aperture rings on Nikon Z, while all new professional Fuji lenses have this… no retro without full manual options… Sorry Nikon… it’s a styling you have created, not a serious attempt at a retro camera
One advantage of dials is that you can glance down and see the settings. You can still adjust the aperture with command dial, no? And you can see the value in the display on the top plate. No need to use menus to change settings, just like a Fuji. But unlike Fuji, you actually get a 'full frame' sensor. There are already 9 Voigtlander lenses for Z mount with aperture rings, if one desires.
