So basically, we need a reference to compare other genomes with, so that is why millions of dollars were put in to ensure that the entire human genome was sequenced. efforts are also ongoing to sequence the entire genome of other species. So, what next after sequencing? After sequencing, we can now compare the newly Whole-genome sequence to the reference genome to be able to identify mutations or insertion or deletion or variants, identifying this is important, especially when we are trying to understand gene function or disease processes… I hope that helps
