Wasn’t sure which video to comment on but I became interested in cats last year. Watched a few joyrider videos and said I’m in. Bought a 35 year old Nacra 5.0 and restored it over the winter. Watched every one of your videos, some a few times and went on my first sail about 3-4 weeks ago. No lessons and went solo in 12-15knots winds. Won’t lie, was a bit of a sh!tshow at first but then I followed your directions. Went very well. Came home, watched a few more videos and went back out. Much better. Went for my 6 ride today, solo of course and was in the trapeze flying the hull (slightly lol). Have to thank you for your videos. Think without them, I would’ve became discouraged and sold the boat. Now i think I found my new hobby/obsession. Thanks again.

While out in my 16 last weekend in light winds, 5-6 knots, I was getting the most speed during a close reach but on a beam and broad reach I just couldn't get going as fast. With the downhaul tightish, I played around with the travelers and sheets but just couldn't get as much speed as a in a close reach direction. In moderate winds, 10+knots, I have no problem getting the horses to gallop. Is this just an attribute of 16's or catamarans or sailboats without spinnakers in general?
Hi. Just a perspective from a long time monohull guy with a first cat (Hobie 16). It would appear that the extra speed of the cat, keeps the apparent wind so far forward, the proper sail trim is always tight! In shifty wind, this contributes to the high percentage of capsizes. If a newbie wants to spend more time sailing and less time swimming, what's your advice? (Asking for a friend.)

I have a Hobie Getaway, which does not have tell tales on the jib. The jib is a roller furl. Should I just rely on main sail tell tales applying the same rules? Or should I add tell tales to the jib?
Yes, if we have availability. We have to keep the boats available for our guests who are staying with us first but if we have boats not being used (which is quite normal) they are available top until 1730 (we close at the start of October BTW)

I have been watching your videos and absolutely love each and everyone of them. they bring back some great memories and have taught me some new techniques. I would like to return to sailing in the future. what would you suggest as a adult male of 100 KG as a good beginner cat for single handing?
As usual, i'd have to recommend the Hobie 16. For 100kg it goes very well and will teach you some great technique. They are also the most abundant catamaran in the world!
Awesome video. i have a hobie getaway and can’t seem to find much information regarding the 6 different grommets in the clew of the mainsail. The instruction manual just shows the mainsheet block connecting to the mainsail clew in the middle grommet. My guess would be using the grommets closer to the stern of the boat would be for lower wind speeds. While using the grommets closer to the mast would be for higher wind speeds? Any help is appreciated. Keep up the great work. Cheers.
Yes, go for the middle generally - i wouldn't go further back than that. You could go 1 forward of the middle for heavy wind as that will tighten the foot nd loosen the leech.
I haven't done a reply of blocks as we only use Harken and don't have any others. Having a ratchet certainly helps with the sheet load when it's getting windy. Not so important in the light winds as you want the sheet to go out easily.
Very informative video, clearing up grey areas with jib and main sail positions. Question...does the forward momentum of boat affect the bridal wire telltales (or wind vain) ?
When we are sailing, we are sailing using the apparent wind - this is the combination of the true wind and induced wind (forward momentum) so on the downwind course, as we go faster our induced wind increases meaning to keep the apparent wind at 90 degrees we must turn mor down wind. I'll be making a video on this soon.
Ah, makes sense, so starting a beam reach can becomes a close reach. So for maximum speed or efficiency the travellers should adjust accordingly if you want to remain on course. Having some sort of wind direction device while shooting your videos would be great but the location could prove to be challenging .
Strictly speaking it would still be a beam reach but your sails would be set as if it were a close reach - most extreme example is when using a spinnaker in a strong wind - for the true wind you're on a broad reach but your main sail is sheeted in the same as for upwind! I prefer bits of tape - cheaper! I'm used to them now and they give me all of the information i need, nothing against something like a Hawk wind indicator though - much more accurate - if you can see that far.
No limits. However, the shorter or lighter that you are we limit how fast the boat will go as the wind picks up. For a lighter sailor the top wind strength that you can manage will be lower. Here are some numbers that i've just made up: 100kg - 24knots 80kg - 20knots 60kg - 17knots so in 24 knots of wind, fully depowered a 100kg sailor can still properly sail the 16.

You should add telltales to the jib - just some tape or wool stick on with sail repair tape is good.

i've looked at some pictures and it does look very similar to the Hobie 16.
I'm a massive Hobie fan so i'd say go Hobie every time if you can!

You are very Wisdom about Sailing a Cat ,,,,the Slow zone isn't supposed to be the Running ? the fastest point of Sail ?
Running isn't fast on a cat - 45 degrees either side is optimal downwind angle.

do you have a review if different blocks? I hear your blocks ratchet? I'm new to sailing and I was looking for an upgrade on my hobie Wave blocks.

Whats a "video tape"?
We use old VHS video tape tied onto the bridle wires at the front for wind indicators - it works really well even in light wind.
