  • In the entertainment and sports industry Diet and Inactivity Related Disease has taken center stage to close the curtains on the final act of many famous African Americans. There's a who's who list of celebrities and athletes who have passed on from complications of Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Heart Disease and Diet Related Cancers.
    Some of the victims were as familiar to us as family as they frequently came into our homes to entertain us. We grew up laughing at their antics on television, dancing to their music on the radio and cheering their accomplishments in the world of sports.
    While their talents have been silenced, their voices can still be heard. If you listen closely to this tribute to famous African Americans, you can hear a voice of awareness from the grave that speaks loud enough in death to be heard in life.

    When MJ recorded that song, I bet he never thought that one day those words would play out in his life. He most definitely left too soon. RIP MJ.....you had a rough road to travel in this life. I pray that THE ALMIGHTY will give you the rest on that side that you never got on this side.

      No disrespect but most lived past the lifespan expectancy which is 70 and over. Its not how long you live but the impact you made. Why you think people do so much good die, its because they did what they were put on earth to do and now its for others to follow in their footsteps.

      Processed food, medication interactions, stress due to suppressed emotions (elevated cortisol levels equal a bloated/enlarged middle which increases chances of diabetes, hypertension, etc.), sleep deprivation, malnutrition, diet drinks, birth control ( which can lead to hormonal imbalances)...Any number of reasons. Black people as a whole need to start figuring out what is really good for OUR physiology and stick with it.

    A little trivia. The Jefferson's Isabel Sanford was 20 1/2 years older than Sherman Hemsley.

    I am a diabetic and have lost several members to this disease. My mother was a double amputee for several years before she gave up the spirit at the age of 76. I watch her all my 57 years of trying to do the right thing and encourage me to do the right thing when I was diagnosed with the disease. 35 years ago. I try and I do more of the right things than the wrong thing. This disease may take my life. I can hopeful that I can live as long as many of these stars in their mid and late 70ties. No all of them were young. It is very unfair and judging to say that they didn't care about their diets - unless you know what they ate. Diabetes is a disease caused by the body not able to produce enough insulin, a weak pancreas. Some are born with the gene trait. It is not caused by cookies, cake, etc. It has been reported (in some people) that a vegetarian die can push back complications from complication of this disease. It may push back or add 10 years. But you will die, if not from diabetes, but some other disease. Do the best with your diet, make more right choices than wrong, take a walk with God. May God Bless you.

    Beautifully done, heartbreaking, informative. Not one Cancer victim but so many with heart disease which is not necessarily diet related but more genetic. I am too skinny and white and I have already had one heart attack and have heart disease which most of my family died from. To all the people who blame the victim for the way they eat, most of these people probably lived longer than you will. Even though my mom was white, Isabel Sanford always reminded me of my mother who also died of a heart attack when she was only 71. I loved "Weezy". May you all Rest in Peace,

      ***** diseases see no color -unlike the idiots who like to classify people with them. most studies that give out information like this only let you see the lower numbers not he whole factors or classes that they were done on.It is a proven fact that 92% of people who die of lung cancer have never smoked, but contract the it from ray-don in their own homes. We all have cancerous cell in our bodies that help us live, it just takes certain stimuli to make them take over & grow out of control to kill us.That is not what we are taught unless you work in a cancer research center. --JUST STATING FACTS THE MEDIA WON'T SHARE

      ***** I'll bet that diet has more to do with heart disease than you think. Being skinny is not a good representation of a good diet. In fact, being skinny could just as well be an indication of a terrible diet with not enough calories or a diet long dominated by an over consumption of simple sugars which can wreak havoc on multiple bodily systems. The diseases that these people suffered from are more the product of the modern American diet. Today, the average American consumes around 140lbs of sugar per year from what I have read. In 1900, it was estimated that we consumed around 15lbs a sugar a year. Simple sugars are a slow acting poison.

    What these people had in common as well as diabetes was stress, stress breaks down the immune system which make us more venerable to disease. When stress sets in drinking and smoking, which either one can kill become even more of an excessive habit. And with the hours that were spent on sets and on the road I can imagine all of the unhealthy foods that were ate just to stay on the move. It's the lifestyle that always catches up with us.

    I think it's a sobering video, because it brings light upon the African American culture and diet. Being Hispanic, I know that many in our community suffer from the same afflictions, due to poor diets and fatty foods related to our culture and tradition. Not easy to make changes, but it's one that has to be done.

    This was a lovely tribute to our stars. It is frightening though to see how many of them, most of them, died from heart disease or complications from diabetes. I just found out today that a long time friend had just gotten her foot amputated not so long after having a stroke due to diabetes. I myself was diagnosed with it, as well as some of my friends. I was diagnosed at the age of 43 in 2003. Diabetes runs in my family one both sides. I guess it was inevitable. I was very upset and angry. Though I've accepted this, I am still not happy about it. For years it was handled by pills and diet. Now I have to be put on insulin -- and I knew that was eventually coming as well--there are so many things you HAVE to beware of with this disease. All I can say is take care of yourselves, especially if you are preconditioned through genes. My mother warned me many years ago, but I loved sweets, and eating heavy foods. I had a very healthy appetite, and the more she bothered me, the more I ate. I should've listened, but being young, you think you're invincible. NOT SO. Pay attention to what you eat, and even if you are still very young, eat these things in moderation. I had a stroke myself in 2009, during the economic down turn. I was so angry, I didn't take care of myself, and began stuffing myself again. The stress, the anger, the fear and not watching what I was eating was part and parcel of that stroke. Thank God it was a mini stroke (TIA), but it was still a stroke and it could've been worse. Take care everyone.

      nitajo45 I think I understand your point but it's good to see color but just don't hate someone because of it. I love the color similarities & differences in people. Look at the pictures of most of the children born on Solomon Island; beautiful colors. Most of them are born w/ blond hair even though there skin is dark. Quite a few of them were genetically tested & they found no European blood at all. Last one: Light skinned Scorpion fish come from the deeper waters while the dark skinned Scorpion fish come from the waters closes to the surface. Take care. Have a great life.

      +nitajo45 I understand your sentiment, however, I am getting a little annoyed by people who complain that "All Lives Matter" as opposed to "Black Lives Matter." Don't act like you don't know. "WE" people of color know that "ALL LIVES MATTER." That is precisely our point and more. ALL LIVES MATTER, but it seems SOME MATTER MORE THAN MOST and that is the caveat of the slogan. The fact that simply pointing it out irritates those that will deny is case in point of how little respect BLACK LIVES SEEM TO BE to people. You don't even want attention called to the fact that GLOBALLY Black Lives do not matter. Darfur, The Middle East Africa, we are simply saying BLACK LIVES MATTER as well and the decimation of racial genocide no matter who is commiting the genocide or help with the RACIAL GENOCIDE whether it be Black crime, Global domination of people of color or what. As Bob Marley sang so eloquently..."No Matter where you are in the WORLD YOU ARE A BLACK MAN AND WOMAN." So before you start with your slogan, respect the thought behind the "BLACK LIVES MATTER" movement because that is exactly what it is a MOVEMENT OF THE PEOPLE. Ja Rasta FarI.

    I don't think this is wired at all. Sometimes diabetes is hereditary in African American culture and others get diabetes by lack of exercise and proper diet. I think over the years we as black people have come a long way when it comes to battling diabetes, but we still have a long way to go. Education is the key. And for those of y'all who say none of these people made any significant difference in history, your ignorant. Do your research on these people who were shown, and you'll see how these people paved the way for A LOT of black actresses and actors, athletes, and musicians of today. Educate yourself people!

      I don't think the message is that movie studios provide bad food on set. Obviously these wonderful actors ate healthier food at home, but growing up poor in communities being starved of healthy foods took its toll over the years. Obesity and diabetes are nationwide epidemics that affect all ethnic groups, but the African American community has always been especially hard hit. Unfortunately for these actors it also led to long term health consequences and bad habits that were hard to kick because they just didn't know any better. It was a different time.

    Diabetes doesn't just belong to the African American community--the numbers are just way too high. I loved many of these actors. I also think that when you're in your late 70s or in your 80s, that passing is not surprising or unexpected. My best friend died at 84. It's always hard when you love someone no matter their age. Thank God we're making great strides with hypertension and diabetes. I know it's not related to diabetes, but I also think that Bernie Mac's passing was too soon. Oddly enough, I think about him from time to time and miss his talent.

    • @TheHouseboy8
      @TheHouseboy8  7 лет назад

    • @teddyl7006
      @teddyl7006 7 лет назад

      I said that we're making strides and you say I don't understand. Even though we want everyone to live forever, we can't wish it to be true. Death is a part of everyone's life. Saying that doctors and researchers aren't working hard enough is not true either. You think that diabetes researchers don't want to cure diabetes? Would you imagine what a great thrill and personal achievement it would be for one of these researchers? They could stop people from suffering from blindness, loss of limb, neuropathy, kidney failure and cardiovascular disease to name a few. Don't insult people who have devoted their lives to fight disease by implying they're not working hard enough.
      As for people dying in their 70s or 80s: if you don't believe people die from old age, then show me someone who's immortal. Saying that someone doesn't die from old age is just a matter of semantics. If you don't understand that than you're in denial. We will all pass. Some day we might be able to change that, but our current understanding and technology cannot change it.
      The deeper you're looking for is denial and blaming. Dream what you want the world to be, but face it too.

      Some of them have more African blood than Halle Berry, Lisa Bonet,Lenny Kravitz, Tiger Woods, Barack Obama - yet you consider THEM African American. Race is a such a stupid and arbitrary thing. The sad thing is that the same distinction you made is the same one of lot of black brothers and sisters from Latin countries make. You see them and say, "Eww... you're different. Your culture is different. Your language is different. Even your religion is different. We are not of the same ilk.You are not one of us." And they look at you and say the same thing, "Don't call me black," and they're more African looking than you! They've been shamed in their own countries for being black and when they get here with that shame you try to cut them out of your shared heritage. Because they're different than you. What do we call that again? Oh, yeah. Bigotry
