  • Early May saw the West Somerset Railway holding their 2022 spring steam gala, running from Thursday 5th to Sunday 8th. Making a star appearance was Caledonian Railway No.419, currently on an English tour from her home at the Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway, in Scotland. For the event, she was fitted with a temporary spark arrestor, at the WSR's request. This was later removed, after it caused serious performance issues, which resulted in numerous delays on the Friday with a purpose built spark arrestor being brought down from Scotland and fitted in time for the weekend. Unfortunately, she then suffered further troubles and would end up being piloted by another loco all day Saturday.
Two further guests came in the form of BR Standard 4MT No.75069 and GWR No.2857, both courtesy of the Severn Valley Railway. This would be the former's first trip away from home since its return to steam in 2018, while the latter was brought in as a last minute replacement for Pannier Tank No.9466.
The Saturday evening of the gala saw the operation of a 12 coach "mega train" from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead and back. This was double headed by 7822 'Foxcote Manor' and 75069 on the outward run, while 2857 took the place of the Standard for the return. This was to be quite a sight and sound along the WSR's twisting gradients.
The full gala line up included:
    Home fleet:
    - WSR 2-6-0 No.9351
    - GWR 5101 Class 2-6-2T No.5199
    - BR(W) 7800 Class 4-6-0 No.7822 'Foxcote Manor'
    - BR(W) 7800 Class 4-6-0 No.7828 'Odney Manor'
    Guests:
    - CR 439 Class 0-4-4T No.419 *
    - GWR 2800 Class 2-8-0 No.2857
    - BR Standard 4MT Class 4-6-0 No.75069

Wonderfull as always. Britain in its spring clothes, the charming birdsong, splendid unhurried footage of the trains … just perfect. Thank you all the way from Australia.

Beautifully filmed with a lovely sound track, so relaxing as I sit here watching this I'm no longer in my four walls but in an idealic scene with nature all around. Thank you so very much from all of us who cannot get out to see this in person, you truly are helping a lot of us.

That was quite possibly one of the most beautifully filmed railway videos that I have seen. Thank you.

Great video Kris, really liked the locations you picked for each shot. Favourites included 5199 at Roebuck and the sequences you did of 2857 at Crowcombe and then of 7822 starting off from Stogumber. I noticed people on the cattle dock when I visited on Thursday, really great extra there I think for getting photos and videos. Lovely pan of 7828 with the PMV behind it and fantastic sound for the mega train!

Cheers, Josh 👍 Agreed, it's nice to see the cattle dock restored and open to the public as a viewpoint.

It was certainly refreshing to be back, having not visited the line since 2019. The only major disappointment was arriving at Crowcombe Heathfield to find out their famous bread pudding is no longer available. A shame, as it was always a highlight of previous visits. Other than that, though, it was a fairly decent day and I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
      Many thanks 😄

Your video was a joy from start to finish. Being Australian, I've only 'done' three heritage (non-Network Rail) railways in UK. WSR is n#1 on my list: I was worried with its financial problems and if I read correctly, infighting between (three?) groups, it was set to close permanently due to COVID.
Thank God passenger numbers on the Gala three days looked largely very good to excellent.
Your filming of Crowcombe Heathfield (talk about a short crossing loop!) was terrific (superb!) but at Stogumber, too many others in the photo (though you cannot help that).
Keep up the great work and let's hope many more travel on the WSR in calendar 2022 and beyond.
