Do 3 bladed Props increase Flight Time on the Blade Inductrix as advertised to?

  • On a tip from a subscriber, Jamie Buxton, and reading that battery connectors and the Low Voltage Cutoff was shortening flight times, I decided to investigate. Not wanting to disable LVC to keep from ruining batteries, I tried a different connector and 3 bladed props versus the stock 4 bladed props to see if that would help. Here is what I found out. Next time, I will cut off 2 of the 4 blades and try that, which should logically be even better. Thanks for watching and please subscribe.

    Cut the four blades down to 2 and Dremel them smooth, best mod I did for my inductrix flight times were atleast a minute longer and the punch out improved greatly! Good to see a comparison with these Rakon blades as I was thinking of ordering some, now I know I will so I can try them with some upgraded motors on a LOS inducrix. Happy flying!

    Nice! Great production of the side-by-side cameras. When messing with the 4 blade props to make 2 blades, I just clipped them with a set of wire cutters and then used a Dremel to clean them up to help with balancing. Thanks for the "shout out" lol👍😎

      It flies longer and if you saw my last Donovans video you would see for yourself. I see no perfomance degrade, but the inductrix is no super machine in the first place. Thanks.

    I sliced my four blades and made two blades out of them. It does make my Inductrix faster but I like the control with the Stock props best. I need to try those Three blade props.....Nice vid!

    Four bladed props generates more thrust, better acceleration. Two blades props have the least amount of thrust, but the battery lasts longer

  • @BlackCatRedScarf
    @BlackCatRedScarf 8 лет назад

    I believe 2 blades would be the optimal design, but not sure the motors would be able to generate enough thrust to keep the flight maneuvers quick and sharp.
    If you got access to 3D printing, if you manage to keep the same blade area, same pitch and increase a little bit the propellers diameter to keep the same motor speed, it will probably improve the flight time a little, keep the same thrust and add little or imperceptible lag to the prop acceleration.
    Since it's a EDF, not sure if single blade EDF propellers would enhance the efficiency, but I would like to see the test "single blade vs multiblade" just to keep the old tradition of the channel.
    When we talk about racing or accurate movements on the smallest package possible, more blades may be desirable, but if we go to the "long flight time" route, less blades seems to improve the flight time.
    Thanks for the fun and educational content Dave.
    Greetings from Brazil.

      Hello Brazil. Yes you are right. Too small for one bladed, but many folks have told me to cut off 2 of the blades of the 4 bladed propellers and try them, so that is my next test. Thanks again.

    Just a suggestion; maybe use a throttle percentage timer which will take into account the variations in throttle power used during each flight and produce a more accurate test?

    to be honest i been over the flight time and i was the first one to explain about the connector issue on the first inductrix i go for performance, check out my 5 minute blade inductrix fpv flights with acro mode and how fast and great mine flys in 15+ mph winds outdoors ;)

      I did and it is good. I also just finished putting 2 bladed props on and find it flies longer and seems to have more punch due to less mass to get spinning too. Thanks and keep up the good work.

    In your text you mentioned LVC control how do you disable that on the Inductrix? My Inductrix only gave me 2 to 2 1/2 minutes and it's stop when I measure a 3.7 voltage on the battery

    A friend has my Align CHP EDL frame that he has mounted to a jig that will be used to measure thrust. He will be trying a few types of blades, and then comparing a 3 blade head to a 2 blade head, as well as what pitch provides the most efficiency.

    i've always had a little problem with the one blade hypothesis that one blade takes less energy to spin than two- that's correct, but in my own testing you need to bump up the pitch curve to hover at the same head speed which means that one blade has to work twice as hard- you do not get exactly twice the flight time, but i absolutely agree you will see an increase in time due to minimizing the turbulence. as for 4 bladed vs. 3 bladed, you would need more aggressive pitch on the 3 blades in order to get the same whippy performance out of the inductrix which would be creating possibly more turbulence. The scientific test to prove this would be putting it on a scale and running at the same throttle and seeing how much force is generated- if it's exactly the same between the 3 and 4 bladed props, no decrease in performance would be present and all quads should have 1 bladed props. but i'll bet you 4, 5, 6 bladed props either create less turbulence or have better acceleration or simply fit more lifting power in less space.
    Love the videos as always, looking forward to more experiments!

      @NightFlyyer  8 лет назад +1

      Thanks for the comments and tips. In all my one bladed experiments, I have not had to increase pitch as some I could not, just rpm.

      A standard 2 blade propeller (there are real 1 bladed propellers with a weight on one side to reduce prop drag and use a larger propeller to get more speed per watt) creates less drag than a 3 or 4 bladed prop moving the same amount of air.... the reason some aircraft use a 3 bladed prop is due to some reason a 2 bladed prop is too big. All things equal you will always get more thrust per watt from a 2 bladed prop but small props will always have the advantages associated with short moment arms of force so have some advantages of their own to consider which your post references. But short moment arms for the location of the center of lift on a prop always come at a price that boils down to reduced air time.
      The goal designing a prop is to move as much air as slowly as possible to reduce drag... a ducted fan with the tips close to the duct is not a free standing propeller and the rules of drag don't change but the parts including the duct dimensions do change as well as the type of performance a ducted fan creates. The scientific way is to read books and learn math as to the width of a neutrino this was all figured out decades ago. And without a watt meter and tachometer it's hard to really see what's going on so anyone without a watt meter should get one to even try thinking about what's going on as you have to measure it to see it. I have a pile of cheap watt meters BTW trying to save a buck or two but only one works and it cost $45 bucks on sale.... the Watt's UP meter. It's better than any other watt meter up to 14 AWG size wire for RC use and is very accurate designed with manufacturing quality control based in the USA.

      LOL.. when I wrote that I stopped watching to go look at them... didn't realize you had done it. I'm trying to visualize the drag and true aspect ratio as it "appears" you decrease the aspect ratio almost 50 percent but not really, but add translational lift from forward air movement over the blade and now both sides are part of the same "wing" disk area. As you go longer you can go wider to maintain the same "static" aspect ratio but then again there's less air being moved in the center with more at the tips... the affect of using one blade is really interesting with composites allowing feather light blades to reduce counter blade weights but for some reason it makes me dizzy getting rid of the other half of rotation;-)

      Again, this was an experiment to get more flight time. That is what it did. My 2 blade test is uploading right now and again it increased flight time. That's all I wanted as was true with all my 1 bladed heli and airplane projects. In the early days of pylon racing , they also used 1 bladed props. Since I actually tried it and didn't listen to skeptics, I found out myself that it works for me. Hope you watch my next video and also check out the links in it,s description box. I know it sounds stupid, but if it works, it ain't stupid. Lol Thanks again.

    I don't doubt it is more efficient since you seem to have done many tests, I'll take you'er word for it (although this is the first video of yours I have watched), but... I don't think you could argue that you didn't have more control on the 4 blade and flew more aggressively.. probably because you had more control... so.. this test is cool, but not reducing as many variables as it could.

    • @NightFlyyer
      @NightFlyyer  5 лет назад

      I have many single blade heli and airplane videos and your right, I have done many tests, all showing it takes less power to turn less blades. Its a fact of science. As far as flying and not having as much control, I have not had any problems controlling this. It controls instantly, as it takes less power to quickly change blade rpm. I have upgraded this drone in newer videos too. Here is a video of Adrian in Switzerland who used my idea to test my theory. I have many 1 bladed heli videos as well, that he said he watched and decided to try for himself. It looks like he has quite a bit of control. ruclips.net/video/abXGxS6CUU4/видео.html Thanks and happy flying.

      Not true, unless you have a bigger motor. My one bladed helicopters are faster than any of the multi blade. It takes more power to turn an 4 bladed prop than a 3 bladed prop. It's simple Physics. My 2 bladed Inductrix is even faster, and it flies even longer. I've proven it in my videos.

      On my 1 bladed helis not so much. I just tried the 2 bladed props and am producing a video so you can see. ON all my big quads, they only have 2 blades in the first place.
