Welcome to another episode of Chopstick Travel. Today we take you on the ultimate street food tour through the Holy city of Old Jerusalem, within the city walls only. Old Jerusalem is an ancient area, and is packed with street foods, teas & coffee, fresh produce, historic and religious relics and endless sightseeing opportunities.
We take you to eat some delicious Palestinian food all around the city, starting with the simple Za’atar bread. Next we locate some spiced lamb kebabs, cooked fresh over fire. And to wash down the kebabs, a delicious & cheap hummus! We then find a bizarre yellow sweet, called date bread, as a dessert. After, we head to a famous Palestinian spice shop, where you tell them exactly what you’re going to cook, and they create the perfect spice blend for you. We picked up local spices - za’atar and sumac, as well as a special spice concoction. Next, we take a short break with some street side Arabic coffee, spiced with cardamon. We decide to do some sightseeing to digest some food. Our first sight was a short stop to the Western Wall. Then we visit an ancient sweet shop, over 150 years old for mutabak. We then visit the next sight - the Dome of the Rock, and then the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. To end our insane day of eating street food inside the old city, we pick up a pomegranate/orange juice, freshly pressed, and head to a small shop selling kanefe.
All shops, restaurants and sights are located within the city walls. There aren’t addresses, but using Google Maps, you can type in the name of the shop and it will give you an approximate location. A better option, ask shop owners inside the Old City. They give great directions. Here are the names of the shops/approximate locations:
- Za’atar bread - NEAR DAMASCUS GATE ENTRANCE
- Lamb kebabs - ON SHUK HA-TSORFIM ST. (also near Shaheen Kebab)
- Hummus - ARAFAT HUMMUS
- Date bread - NEXT TO ARAFAT HUMMUS
- Spices - SEA OF HERBS JERUSALEM
- Arabic Coffee - can be found all around the Old City
- Sight #1 - THE WESTERN WALL
- Mutabak - ZALATIMO SWEETS (we had to ask a shop owner for directions)
- Sight #2 - DOME OF THE ROCK
- Sight #3 - CHURCH OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE
- Pomegranate & Orange Juice - NEAR THE AUSTRIAN HOSPICE
- Kanefe & tea - CONFECTIONERY JAFAR

panagiotis metaxotos - - Palestine doesn’t exist, it’s a name that was given to Israel by the Romans! After they destroyed it...
Why “Palestinians” stole the flag from Jordan 🇯🇴??? 😂 These people came from Jordan to work in Israel as economical immigrants because the Jews gave them work, The world buying their lies, but one day you’ll all see the truth, even in the Quran ISRAEL 🇮🇱 exists and Allah gave it to the Israelis. “Palestine” not even mentioned!
The Quran and Allah has nothing to with this, the Americans established the state of Israel after the 2nd WW. and brought thousands of Jews from all over the world , stealing the land from Palestinians.

The yellow round Palestinian date cakes are so popular as street sweet fast desert it's called Kaek Bi Ajweh.. The ones that are made in homes are with different recipes made from Salomina flower instead of white flower with different fillings, date and no yellow color. Beside these yellow cakes are the Palestinian sesame Kaek.. It's the best bagel in the Middle East. All Arab countries including some of the Mediterranean countries know these Jerusalem Palestinian Sesame Bagels as the best and the tastier., Zalatimo is a brand name for one kin d of Palestinian hot Sweet which is the Mutabak. Zalatimo was named after the Palestinian family name that the grand father established 200 years ago. Zalatimo is the king of Mutabak. And then the Nabulsi Kunafa is the most popular sweets in most of the Arab countries. The most famous one come from its origin the West Bank Palestinian city of Nablus. Now almost in every Palestinian town and city you find yummmmy Kunafa.

Fabulous video with great details on Palestinian food and culture. it makes me want to visit Palestine, wonderful people and great place.
Al Quds (Jerusalem) is the best.... miss it so much..
More like Yerushalayim (Al Quds) meaning the Holy.
The Name of the city is More important than just saying “the holy” in Arabic.
Because Yerushalayim is Not the holiest place In Islam and Is Not mentioned Ever by name In the Quran.
For Jews however it’s mentioned as Yerushalayim over 300 times in the Torah.
@Allah Is Number One, Free Palestine. Avivi,
Yerushalayim is the name of the city because there is No J in Hebrew.
Al Quds just means Holy from the Hebrew word Qodesh
@Allah Is Number One, Free Palestine. The Quran Never mentions Yerushalayim amd Neber mentions Palestine . The Quran However Does; Mention Israel and the children of Israel “Bani Al Isra” notice that Israel in Arabic is So Holy that it has a title together with the people.
The reason there are Christians Arabs in Judea amd Samaria is because They were there Prior to Islam’s invasion in the 7th century.
@Allah Is Number One, Free Palestine. Ban Israel means Children if Israel Meaning Jacob who was Isaacs son.
Israel has 12 tribes.
You Don’t even know Arabic
🤦🏻♂️
@Allah Is Number One, Free Palestine. Ah I stroked a Nerve because you came to terms that you’re Wrong ! 😆
You’ve been reported for your misbehavior.
Go back to school teenager and take Arabic as a Non. native speaker please 🤦🏻♂️

Great video, Luke. Thanks for sharing with the world. Love the positive vibes from you and your wife, and I’m glad you enjoyed your time in Palestine. Of all the desserts you had, knafeh is definitely my favorite - I can literally eat it every day. The main difference between the Palestinian (Nabulsi) and Turkish version is the former uses a semolina based dough while the latter uses a kudayef phyllo based dough. Most Arab countries make both and refer to the semolina one as “na’meh” ناعمة (soft) and the other as “khishneh” خشنة (rough).
P.S. if you ever plan to visit Jordan, let me know and I’d love to host you guys.
In general this type of desserts, which is a cake stuffed with cream mixture or cheese and its dough is originally like hair, originated in levant, especially Aleppo and Damascus, mentioned for the first time in Arabic cookbooks from the Middle Ages. There is palestinian special type of kunafa, called kenafe nabulsieh, it is smooth, its dough is ground, And it is a little thin and with distinctive ingredients.
The first one is palestinian and the other with phyllo kadayf is historical arabic kunafa not turkish.
